“God is NOT a terrorist” It is safe to say that God is the opposite of a terrorist. God is an unconditional and respectful lover who loves and accepts us exactly as we are. “God is love, and all who live in love live in God, and God lives in them.” 1 John 4:16 While growing up as children, we learn from various older authority figures and adults what earthly higher powers are like. Depending on some of the shortcomings of these earthly higher powers we may have picked up false notions about God and about our relationship with God or a true higher power. God cares about us deeply and intimately. God does not stir up fear, does not coerce, force, treat us like robots or slaves. God, who is synonymous with Love, is patient, kind, does not envy, is not easily angered, is not arrogant, boastful or rude, does not keep track of wrongs, either our own or others, does not insist on it's own way. God does not control us. God loves and accepts us exactly the way we are. God wants to help us as much as we desire. God does not delight in evil. God believes all things, hopes all things. God's unconditional love never ends and is never exhausted. God is understanding, there to provide us wisdom, knowledge, counsel, courage. God desires a personal intimate relationship and friendship with us. God desires us to have the awe and wonder of a child who is being led on an adventure. God is filled with the following attributes that he desires to increase in us such as joy, peace, mercy, forgiveness, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faith, self-control (Galatians 5:22) Dear God, Help me experience your tenderness, kindness, patience, love, goodness and friendship. “Anxiety occurs when there is a gap between my expectations and my will and reality. “ Unrealistic expectations are a trap that leads to resentment. The higher our expectations for ourselves and others creates more possibility for disappointment and frustration. This does not mean we do not set goals or that we do not desire to improve and grow. Quite the contrary, it means we strive toward our goals and invest in enjoying our lives fully. We learn to appreciate life exactly as it is and cherish each moment of the dynamic adventure of life. " Shame occurs when you haven't been able to get away with the 'who' you want people to think you are. “ Carl Whitaker Underneath all shame are lies that destroy. To heal from toxic shame false beliefs, we have to call out and expose the lie underneath with the truth. If there is a shame lie that you keep believing, expose it to the light in a journal. One way to do this is to write out the shame lie on one column and in a second column next to it, write the truth from your own experience and or faith tradition. Then practice believing and reinforcing the truth. Practice makes progress. There is a temptation to wear a mask and to pretend to be someone we are not. We all have insecurities, but we can't allow those insecurities to make us wear a mask and be unauthentic. It is so tempting, but it never works. We are totally unique and imperfectly perfect just the way we are. We can admire certain attributes or qualities of others and even emulate them but we cannot succeed as a cookie cutter version of someone else. Our society often tries to lump us into a particular stereotype or group. Resist being put in a box or being narrowed down to a particular stereotype. Take off the mask and practice being your unique self. It is a path toward freedom and progressive healing. People pleasing is a trap and it is a form of control. If there is a tendency to want to control or people please, there is fear underneath. An acronym for fear is false evidence appearing real. The false evidence and or the lie of being unauthentic doesn't ultimately work. The people we are trying to please will either end up letting us down or take advantage of us. By taking off the mask, and assertively being your authentic self, you respect yourself and others. Dear God, help me let go of any shame lie that seeks to reduce me to wearing a mask and pretending to be someone I am not. "God's gifts put man's best dreams to shame." --Elizabeth Barrett Browning Learning to see life as a gift is an art that takes practice. Trusting that the gifts God gives us will put our dreams to shame is something that has to be experienced. The biblical story of Joseph in the Old Testament is a great example of trust in the mysterious providence of God especially when we get thrown curve balls and things seem like they are not working out in the short term. Joseph was sold into slavery by his own brothers. This doesn't sound like a great gift. However, we don't always know what is truly good and what is truly bad for many times in life something that is seemingly bad can later turn into something seemingly good. Like a good movie or book, we need patience to wait until the story develops and unfolds especially during climaxes so we can enjoy the resolve. In the story of Joseph, he later becomes prince of Egypt. He would not have had that opportunity had he not been sold into slavery. Trusting in the unknown and staying in the present moment detached from outcomes allows us to enjoy everything even the curve balls that life throws us because we know that they will pass and we can learn and grow from them. That, of course, includes self and others” Evil is anything that harms the human being or that is not good for the human being. The opposite of evil is love and an important element of love is forgiveness. Learning to forgive oneself and others is a healthy habit that leads to deeper Serenity. The art of forgiving and accepting needs to be practiced so that one can make progress leading to a habit that pays dividends. Forgiveness and acceptance does not mean calling evil good. Instead, forgiving and accepting heals oneself from the poison of resentment, bitterness and being stuck in the past. Resentment can block us from peace and Serenity. Our ego truly does edge God or goodness out. Practicing forgiveness and acceptance in all things frees one from many of the traps of the ego and the critical judgmental mind that can prevent us from progressive peace and healing.
