It's our annual check-in with Becks Quirk, while Kris is recovering from Women's Week in P-town! Becks and Tara talk about what's changed in the last year, where they're at, what keeps them motivated, as well as Becks's reflections after Banned Books Week. Official Recommendations From Becks: Every Step She Takes by Alison Cochrun In keeping with the annual nature of her visits, Becks's official recommendation this week is another Alison Cochrun audiobook, Every Step She Takes. A bout of turbulence provokes Sadie into coming out and sharing her deepest secrets with her seat companion, Mal, only to learn they're both joining the same tour of Camino de Santiago in Portugal. Becks is a sucker for physical journeys that exhaust the body and mind, leading to revelations and change. From Tara: Ladies in Hating by Alexandra Vasti Tara's official recommendation this week is Ladies in Hating by Alexandra Vasti. Lady Georgiana Cleeve is the author of many popular novels, which helps her support herself and her mother. When Lady Darling's books are equally popular and have details that are eerily similar to Georgiana's own books, Georgiana knows she has to unmask Lady Darling. She's in for the shock of her life when Lady Darling ends up being none other than Georgiana's teenage crush. Tara loved the emotional journeys in this one and how it plays with conventions from gothic novels. There was a time when NGOs were revered, but now they're often eyed with suspicion. Suparna Chaudhry is an associate professor of international affairs at Lewis & Clark and the author of the forthcoming book “Civil Societies, Uncivil States: State Repression of NGOs.” She joins guest host John McCaa to discuss what happened to the reputation of NGOs – which once were seen as philanthropic lifelines and now are accused of mismanagement and meddling in international affairs – and what happens to the people on the ground when these organizations do not function as intended. When Donald Trump questions elections or attacks the press, it can feel like America's democracy is facing something new. Upholding the Rights and Honor of the Companions – Following the Way of the Sahabah in Islam | Tarbiyah Islamiyah 01-06 | ZAD Academy Audio | Blogpost by Zayd HajiBy Zayd Haji – Student at Zad AcademyAssalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh,In this session of Tarbiyah Islamiyah 01-06, Shaykh Ibrahim Zidan explores one of the central themes of Islamic creed and education — the rights of the Companions (Sahabah) and the obligation to love, respect, and defend them. These noble individuals were chosen by Allah to accompany the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and to transmit his message to later generations.Allah has explicitly praised the Sahabah in the Qur'an:“Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and those who are with him are severe against disbelievers, and merciful among themselves.”(Surah Al-Fath 48:29 – quran.com/48/29)Loving the companions and following their understanding of the religion is an integral part of faith. Speaking negatively about them contradicts the direction of the Qur'an, where Allah commands believers never to criticize a people whom He has praised.“And the first forerunners [in faith] among the Muhajirun and the Ansar and those who followed them with good conduct – Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him.”(Surah At-Tawbah 9:100 – quran.com/9/100)This verse establishes that following the Sahabah's understanding is not optional but fundamental. Any attempt to diminish their standing ultimately weakens the foundation through which Islam reached us — the Qur'an and Sunnah, transmitted through their trustworthy efforts. All companions are deemed just and trustworthy (ʿudūl). The Prophet ﷺ said:“Do not revile my companions, for if one of you were to spend gold equal to Uhud in charity, it would not equal a handful of what they gave, or even half of it.”(Sahih al-Bukhari 3673 – sunnah.com/bukhari:3673)This hadith highlights their unmatched rank and contribution. The generation that carried and preserved Islam deserves immense respect. Thus, believers must avoid delving into historical disputes or criticizing their actions. The Prophet ﷺ forewarned that the ummah would experience divisions and gave clear guidance to remain upon his path and that of the rightly guided caliphs:“I urge you to adhere to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly-guided Caliphs after me. Hold fast to it with your molar teeth.”(Sunan Abi Dawood 4607 – sunnah.com/abudawud:4607)The way to salvation and unity is by adhering to Revelation through their understanding. This ensures protection from deviation and sectarianism.Love and Loyalty: Loving the companions is part of loving the Prophet ﷺ. Hating or insulting them endangers one's faith.Trust in Transmission: The Companions are reliable transmitters of the Qur'an and Sunnah; their righteousness is confirmed by Allah.Avoid Contention: Refrain from discussing past disputes among them.Follow Their Faith: Success lies in following the Qur'an and Sunnah according to their interpretation. Conclusion: The companions (Sahabah) are the spiritual foundation of this ummah. Upholding their honor safeguards our connection to the authentic teachings of Islam. As the Prophet ﷺ guided, steadfastness upon his Sunnah and the way of his Companions ensures unity, purity of faith, and salvation.

On this episode of the Chuck ToddCast, Chuck breaks down a week that feels like a case study in America’s democratic backslide. With the government shutdown dragging on and Donald Trump disengaged from any real effort to end it, Republicans in Congress are paralyzed — and Democrats risk losing ground the longer it continues. Chuck examines how Trump’s brand of politics has reshaped the culture, from congressional dysfunction to GOP leaders dodging accountability on everything from Epstein files to free speech hypocrisy. Later, he dives into the Supreme Court’s looming decision on the Voting Rights Act, the ripple effects of potential gerrymandering shifts in the Sun Belt, and the latest shake-ups in Democratic primaries — from Janet Mills’ funding alliances to Florida’s Hector Mujica making AI a centerpiece of his campaign. It’s a snapshot of a democracy under strain — and a politics struggling to evolve. Finally, Chuck answers listeners’ questions in the “Ask Chuck” segment and previews the upcoming weekend in college football. Got injured in an accident? It's Thursday, October 9th, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 140 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Pakistani pastor dies after 13-year jail sentence A pastor in Pakistan died on Sunday after languishing in prison for 13 years. Pastor Zafar Bhatti founded Jesus World Mission Church ministry. Back in 2012, he was falsely accused of insulting Islam. Authorities finally overturned his conviction this month, releasing him last Wednesday. The 62-year-old pastor died days after from cardiac arrest at his home.   The British Asian Christian Association helped defend the pastor in court. The organization stated, “Though his earthly journey has ended, Zafar's faith, endurance, and ultimate vindication remain a powerful testament to hope in Christ amidst persecution.” Nigerian Anglican Church appalled that woman chosen to be new church head The Anglican Church of Nigeria declared spiritual independence from the Church of England on Tuesday. The announcement came in response to the Church of England's appointment of Sarah Mullally as the Archbishop of Canterbury. She is the first woman to hold the position. She also supports abortion and faux homosexual marriage.  Archbishop Henry Ndukuba is the Primate of the Church of Nigeria. He stated, “[Mullally's] appointment marks a tragic departure from biblical orthodoxy. . . . We remain Anglicans — but not under Canterbury. Our loyalty is to Christ and the truth of His Word, not to institutions that have abandoned it.” Police arrest man intent on blowing up church with Supreme Court Justices In the United States, police arrested a man on Sunday who had hundreds of explosive devises outside of St. Matthews Cathedral in Washington, D.C. Police made the arrest before an annual service traditionally attended by U.S. Supreme Court justices.  According to court records, the man's notebook expressed animosity toward Supreme Court justices, the Catholic Church, Jews, and immigration enforcement officials.  FBI cuts ties with God-hating Southern Poverty Law Center The Federal Bureau of Investigation announced last week it has cut ties with the Southern Poverty Law Center. The far-left nonprofit is known for listing conservative and Christian organizations as “hate groups,”  primarily because they affirm God's design for sexuality and marriage. FBI Director Kash Patel posted on X, “The Southern Poverty Law Center long ago abandoned civil rights work and turned into a partisan smear machine. Their so-called ‘hate map' has been used to defame mainstream Americans and even inspired violence. That disgraceful record makes them unfit for any FBI partnership.” Florida, Louisiana, Missouri & Texas sue FDA over mail-order Abortion Kill Pill The state of Louisiana joined a lawsuit against the Food and Drug Administration on Monday.  Florida, Missouri, and Texas are also on the case. They are challenging the FDA's 2023 policy that allows mail-order abortion drugs. Louisiana's filing states, “Every year, doctors and activists in states like California and New York mail a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved abortion drug called mifepristone to thousands of Louisiana residents for the express purpose of causing abortions in Louisiana that are blatantly unlawful.” Gold hit $4,000 per ounce first time ever On Tuesday, spot gold prices hit $4,000 per ounce for the first time in history.  That's up 50% from January. Silver is up 60% this year. The demand for gold is up as investors hedge against economic uncertainty.  Financial analyst Rhona O'Connell told Reuters, “Background factors are much the same as before, in terms of geopolitical uncertainty, with the added spice of the (U.S.) government shutdown.” Prison Fellowship and Bible League to send 620,000 Bibles to prisoners And finally, Prison Fellowship International and Bible League International are partnering to distribute over half a million Bibles. The 620,000 Bibles will go to prisoners in 20 countries over the next five years. Frank Lofaro with Prison Fellowship International said, “God's Word has the power to reach prisoners in their darkest moments with the light of Jesus Christ. Through this partnership, prisoners who come to know Jesus through our evidence-based, in-prison programs are equipped to grow in their faith through a Bible that they can understand and that speaks to their circumstances.” Luke 4:18 says, “The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Thursday, October 9th, in the year of our Lord 2025. Follow us on X or subscribe for free by Spotify, Amazon Music, or by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus (Adam@TheWorldview.com). Hustle culture nearly destroyed my health, my marriage, and my ability to be present for my daughters. In this deeply personal episode, I share why I stopped glorifying the grind and learned that working smarter not harder is the real path to sustainable success. From leaving Deloitte to build BudgetDog while caring for my daughter with Dravet syndrome, to discovering toxic mold that threatened our entire family's health, this is the raw truth about what endless hustle really costs. I'll walk you through the moments that forced me to choose between proving my worth through output and actually being present for what matters. Seasons of sacrifice are necessary staying there forever is dangerous - There's a time to grind, but knowing when to stop is what separates success from self-destruction 2. Your biggest breakthroughs come from rest, not burnout - The most strategic moves happen when you step back and think, not when you're drowning in details 3. Health markers don't lie - When your cortisol is shot and your testosterone drops, your body is telling you something the hustle bros won't   Quotables "I made $1 million sitting at a pool. I made a couple hundred thousand sitting in a cubicle at Deloitte." "You can run on the treadmill to get in shape, but if you run on it forever, you're going to fall off and hurt yourself." "Sustainable success comes from clarity, not chaos." "Our disadvantage led to our advantage if my daughter didn't have that seizure, we would've stayed in that toxic house much longer."   Links & Resources Learn more about BudgetDog Academy: https://budgetdog.com Connect with me on Instagram: https://instagram.com/budgetdog My book, The Roadmap to Financial Freedom: https://budgetdog.com/book If this episode resonated with you, share it with someone who needs to hear that rest isn't giving up it's gearing up for what's next. What makes them your enemy?Embrace Your Enemy by Praying for Them (v17-19)Embrace Your Enemy by Forgiving for Them (v26-27)Forgive your enemy because Jesus commands us to forgiveForgive your enemy because forgiveness releases you of their hold over youForgive your enemy because forgiveness is a required step toward reconciliation Forgive your enemy because you are an enemy who has been forgivenReflectionHow will you respond? What will you do? Will you embrace your enemy by praying for them, forgiving them? Or will you continue to remain enslaved in your self-made prison of anger and resentment? What step of faithful obedience to the words of Jesus is God calling you to take to embrace your enemy? Read Romans 12:14-21.Why will you embrace your enemy? Read Romans 5:6-11Sermon Footnotes“An enemy is someone we have defined as being against us in contrast to someone who is for us. Many of us have a strange need to divide the world up into people who are for us and those who are against us. Even more strange is that our identity is often dependent on having enemies. We don't exist without an enemy. We define ourselves by what we are opposed to. We define the enemy and the enemy is there to define us.” - Henry Nouwen, Following Jesus, p64“Hating the enemy costs us. We often allow the enemy to have power over us…Feelings of hatred, rejection, jealousy, and resentment enslave us in our self-made prison of fear.” - Henry Nouwen, Following Jesus, p66,67“In the New Testament our enemies are those who harbor hostility against us, not those against whom we cherish hostility, for Jesus refuses to reckon with such a possibility.” - Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Cost of Discipleship, p147-148“Through the medium of prayer we go to our enemy, stand by his side, and plead for him to God.” - Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Cost of Discipleship, p149 Recommended Reading:Cost of Discipleship by Dietrich Bonhoeffer - specifically Chapter 13. Psychoanalysis On and Off the Couch
When We Feel Provoked by the Politics of Our Patients with Heribert Blass, Dr. Med. (MD) (Dusseldorf, Germany)

“I think that the comparison [between political and erotic passions]  is related to the danger of transgressing boundaries from the side of the analyst. It's not totally the same, but it's because of the emotions and the danger of being too much involved as an analyst, if you don't pay attention to what is happening in ourselves with our own emotions, then it can be similar. I think both are important for the psychoanalytic process, to see it as a real relationship - there is this setting where two people in the room meet. They are real persons, but at the same time, a kind of dramatic play fantasy creation coming up from fantasies of the patient, and our own reactions as analysts come into play and gradually just build up the story that is mainly related to the patient's biography, the patient's relationships, and what's going on in her or his life at the moment, but now in relation with us.”   Episode Description: We recognize the passionate political world we are living in and the challenges it introduces into the psychoanalytic relationship. Such moments of intense personal conviction challenge the clinician's capacity to hold those convictions, allow the same for the analysand and still locate an analytic surface with which to find additional meanings. Heribert feels that this creates opportunities for intensity akin to "erotic-sexual impulses." He discusses clinical encounters that include his "revealing my assessment of reality" as an aspect of his authentic self living in relation to the patient. He presents the case of a young man whose effort to locate his analyst's "soft spot" entailed provoking him with his idealization of Hitler. Unlike the patient's father who turned away from him at such times, his analyst  tolerated "my required countertransference" which enabled the patient to recognize and tolerate his  tender longings that had lived disguised in his sado-masochistic preoccupations. We close with Heribert, the new IPA president, sharing his vision of  psychoanalysis having a presence beyond the couch in universities and the community at large.   Our Guest: Heribert Blass, Dr. Med. (MD), Psychoanalyst and training analyst for adults, children and adolescents, member of the German Psychoanalytic Association and IPA (DPV/IPA), also specialist of psychosomatic medicine and psychotherapy, psychiatry, working in private practice in Düsseldorf, Germany. Since August 2025 President of the International Psychoanalytical Association (IPA). From 2020 to 20204 President of the European Psychoanalytical Federation (EPF). He has published on the image of the father, male identity and sexuality, gender dysphoria and transidentities, aspects of thought function in the psychoanalytic process and in the institution, psychoanalytic supervision, psychoanalysis in society and as editor of a book on Time and the Experience of Time (first in German, the English publication will follow soon) about the exchange of psychoanalysis with other sciences.   Recommended Readings: Blass, H.
