The Berean Call Podcast
Question: Does every Christian have the power to cast out demons and heal sickness?

The Berean Call Podcast

Question: In the recent lead article by Dave Hunt [February 2025], he says, "So by the gift of healing, the disciples could loose the sick from their bondage to illness; and by casting out demons they loosed souls from that form of bondage. Every Christian has the power, in the name of Jesus (as He would and to His glory), to do the same today." So, TBC thinks every Christian today has the power of Jesus and the disciples to heal the sick and cast out demons? If so, why isn't this happening all the time? I think you are wrong on this one.Response: The issue regarding what Dave Hunt said is not the question. Rather, did he quote the Scriptures correctly and in context? You ask: "So TBC thinks every Christian today has the power of Jesus and the disciples to heal the sick and cast out demons? If so, why isn't this happening all the time?"As Dave wrote: "The promise of having from the Father what two or three agree upon echoes Christ's similar promises concerning prayer, such as, 'Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you' (Matt 7:7). All of these promises—binding and loosing, agreeing upon a request, or simply believing—seem very much alike. But what is meant? Christ surely does not mean that no matter what we bind, loose, agree upon, or ask, God will grant it like an overly indulgent grandparent. It is axiomatic that God has not turned His universe or mankind over to us to do with as we will.

Chris was called away on a years-long shipping voyage by a conniving relative, so he can't be with us today. In his stead, Mary returns! You may remember her from such episodes as this past October's The Phantom of Manhattan, 2021's Die Hamletmachine, and our now beloved E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial in His Adventure on Earth episode from 2023. We discuss our experience reading Fanny Hill by John Cleland, originally published in 1748 and since routinely banned as the first known published English-language erotica. Mary found a copy of this in a little free library years ago and since then, it has taken up permanent residence in her mind and she has talked about it off and on. I figured it'd be a fun one for the show since we, somehow, have yet to feature 18th century erotica on TBC. In addition to our usual barnyard language, today's episode includes coerced/trafficked sex work, graphic sex, and sexual assaults as this book is mid-18th century pornography. In this raw and resonant episode, Philly Powell interviews Kerene Strochnetter about Chapter One of her upcoming book. Kerene unpacks the origins of self-soothing and why we reach for wine, work, sugar, our phones, or even people-pleasing to feel better. This episode is a loving wake-up call. You'll laugh, maybe squirm a little, and come away seeing your own patterns with more clarity and compassion. About the Book Kerene's upcoming book (title TBC) explores how evolutionary brain patterns, cultural myths, and unconscious behaviours drive unhealthy habits and addiction—and how to change that through self-awareness, self-regulation, and self-compassion. Chapter One sets the stage with the ultimate truth: Everybody self-soothes. What you do with that awareness is up to you. In this episode: What Self-Soothing Actually Is Kerene sees self-soothing as a normal response that begins in utero: everyone does it. How Your Fast Brain (Homer) Keeps You On Autopilot Drawing from Chapter 4 of her book, Kerene explains how our fast brain (Homer) runs the show in moments of stress, making quick, comfort-driven decisions to avoid discomfort. Cultural Conditioning & Shame Why self-soothing is often hidden beneath shame, and how our culture glorifies productivity, control, and stoicism while quietly fuelling burnout and addictive behaviour. The Addiction Continuum Addiction doesn't just mean “hard drugs.” Kerene reframes addiction as a spectrum, and how even “acceptable” habits can keep us stuck if we're using them to avoid our feelings. The First Step is Seeing It You can't change what you can't see. Awareness is what interrupts the pattern, not willpower.  Key Takeaways Self-soothing is normal. We all do it. It's only a problem when it's our only strategy. Your fast brain just wants relief (like now!). It doesn't care if it costs you tomorrow's peace. Awareness is your superpower. You can't interrupt what you cannot see. There's power in pausing, noticing, and asking: What am I trying to avoid right now? This isn't about discipline—it's about understanding. You don't need to shame yourself into change. You need to outsmart your old wiring. March 2025 NewsletterOriginally published January 1, 1994And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews. These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.—Acts 17:10-11As we approach the end of our second year as a ministry, we think it worthwhile to review two basic questions people often ask regarding the work of The Berean Call: “What exactly is a Berean?” and “What does TBC do?”Although we've covered many aspects of those questions in various issues of our newsletter (and, in general, The Berean Call is an ongoing reflection of our work), we thought it might be helpful to our readers if we addressed “what we're about” in some depth.Luke writes in Acts 17:10-11 that the Apostle Paul, having left Thessalonica and recently arrived in the city of Berea, preached in the synagogue of the Berean Jews. Paul's encouraging experience with the Bereans caused Luke to commend them. He wrote that they were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica because they received the Word of God from Paul “with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily” to know whether or not what he had to say was true. The purpose of this ministry is to call believers in Jesus Christ to be like the Bereans. They not only had a heart to hear the things of God but, more importantly, were able to discern what was truly of Him because they regarded the Scriptures as the authority in ascertaining the truth of what they were hearing. The Bereans practiced what Isaiah preached: “To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them” (Isaiah 8:20).TBC's chief concern is the spiritual welfare of the body of Christ, and in particular, the encouragement of biblical discernment. We believe the times reflect the necessity of our calling. Even a cursory review of what has taken place in the church during the last 25 years will reveal a fierce undermining of “the faith which was once delivered unto the saints” (Jude 3). You might even say that the Bereans of Paul's day “had it easy” compared to this generation. In those days the opposition to truth was in the secular world around them—it had not yet infiltrated the church under the guise of a more enlightened or advanced Christianity. While there were pressing pagan influences as well as some heretical teachings and practices here and there, they weren't subjected to anything like the flood of false beliefs, teachings, and practices surging in on the tidal wave of today's Christian media.

It's not usually her type of death metal, but something about that show was extra fun and every now and then when she's feeling ignorant and wants some dumb slammy shit, she may put on Grotesque Blessings. When reading for TBC that's kind of peak “I am feeling dumb and also full of rage”, so she listened to a lot of Broken Hope while reading this. Wagner sure has a theme and he's sticking to it! Hail and well met, book friends! We're feeling pretty silly as we close in on the final episodes of Season 9. We travel back to 10th century Bohemia to learn the story behind the popular Christmas carol "Good King Wenceslas". Join us for a very biblically-styled tale that taught us some things but failed to get us invested in the characters. The author emailed us about his book and, usually when we get emails from authors or PR reps, it's not even worth consideration - but a medieval historical thriller? about a Christmas carol? In this century at this point in history? At this time of year? It only made sense to pop it onto the schedule for December.  Thanks to George himself for furnishing us with a free review copy of the book (and being willing to be featured on TBC with all that may entail)! Musings and derailments include: Duke Abe Simpsovclav of Springfieldia, heavy metal months, Breastfeeding education, Paris's Babadook terrors, and we struggle to poorly sing another song from the book (the titular carol)! In addition to our usual barnyard language, today's episode includes discussion or mention of parental abuse, sexual assault, and murder.

English novelist Anthony Quinn has met and interviewed Martin Amis on several occasions. Their first encounter followed the publication of London Fields in 1989, the second during the publicity storm that came with Amis's 1995 novel The Information. In this episode, he and Jack discuss Amis's last novel, Inside Story, published in 2020. Although Anthony struggled with it in his first reading, he later came to consider it a masterful valedictory that encompasses all the best and worst of Amis as a man, and as a writer. Described by some as 'The Big Book of Mart', Inside Story is part memoir, part novel, and part writing manual. As well as revising Amis's final words of wisdom and warning to writers, Anthony and Jack cover the great romantic and literary loves of Amis's life, from Saul Bellow and his godfather Phillip Larkin, to the inimitable Christopher Hitchens. Crucially, Anthony reveals who he believes Amis loved most of all the people in his life. FOLLOW US ON TWITTER/ X: @mymartinamis

Riker and Zeke swap entertaining college stories, contrasting their experiences at an HBCU versus a PWI, with Sham humorously dubbing them "Perfectly White Institutions." White Collar Suge playfully accuses Riker of being the type who attended church on Wednesdays, prompting Reed to joke about books being "long and full of words." The conversation takes an intriguing turn as Zeke reveals, like Sham, his skepticism about the first reported attempt on Trump's life, while Reed adds a lighthearted note about dark-skinned men needing baby oil, referencing Diddy's skincare routine. November 2024 NewsletterI recently received a newsletter from a ministry which contained the exhortation: “The Bible says there is a season for everything. This is our season to fight hard—to battle back—to win." The timeliness of their statement could not have been better fitting with the main point of this TBC article. We without doubt are in the “last days” (possibly even the last hours) battle before Jesus returns. Scripture warns us that Satan knows his time is short (Revelation 12:12) and he's unleashing every wrathful and wicked device he has upon "the inhabiters of the earth."         Therefore, we need every insight we can find in God's Word that sheds light on how we are to "fight the good fight of faith" (1 Timothy 6:12). In this article, we're featuring a man of God who embodies the qualities sorely needed in the church today. His name is Nehemiah, the son of Hachaliah, who wrote most of the Book named after him. He certainly made himself aware of the times, and the Holy Spirit gave him tremendous insights in what the children of Israel ought to do regarding a variety of very difficult conditions. For example, when Nehemiah first became aware of the dire circumstances "concerning the Jews that had escaped" and were living in Jerusalem, his reaction was: he "sat down and wept... and prayed before the God of heaven…." Furthermore, he humbly confessed "the sins of the children of Israel, which we have sinned against thee: both I and my father's house have sinned" (Nehemiah 1:2-6).

Question: Why do Christians worship on Sunday?

Question: Why do Christians worship on Sunday? I see no biblical basis to omit one commandment. I must settle this, because I want to obey the Lord.Response: We addressed this in the May '99 TBC (see—https://bit.ly/3Xv5AOR). Critics claim that Constantine (or the Roman Catholic Church) changed the Sabbath from Saturday to Sunday. Who cares? No one has the power to change the Sabbath. It was and always will be Saturday. But Christians do not worship on the Sabbath, the day in which God rested from His work of the first creation. We are not part of that old creation, but each Christian is “in Christ…a new creature: old things are passed away…all things are become new” (2 Cor 5:17). Christ rose from the dead on Sunday, the first day of a new week, the “firstborn from the dead” (Col 1:18), the progenitor of a new race of born-again men and women. That is why we meet together to worship the Lord on Sunday, “the first day of the week” (Acts 20:7).Our main website: www.thebereancall.orgStore: store.thebereancall.orgDownload our app: www.thebereancall.org/appIn-depth research on a variety of Bible topics: https://www.thebereancall.org/topicsSign up for our email updates: https://www.thebereancall.org/subscribe

Yesterday, the elders at Trinity Bible Church in Dallas, Texas announced that their lead preacher, Steve Lawson, was involved in an “inappropriate relationship” with a woman. This revelation was serious enough to lead to Lawson's departure from TBC and likely his broader ministry career. Ligonier Ministries, where he served as a teaching fellow, and The Master's Seminary, where he held the position of Dean of D.Min. Studies, have removed him from their respective websites. This news has sent shockwaves through the Reformed evangelical community, particularly among those who have long appreciated the ministries of R.C. Sproul (Ligonier) and John MacArthur (Master's). I've received numerous messages from friends expressing their astonishment, with one asking me if it was true. Sadly, it is. The reaction earlier this year when Alistair Begg affirmed his support for attending a same-sex wedding was similar. It raises a troubling question: how can someone who taught the Scriptures so effectively find themselves compromised on such fundamental moral issues?Full article: truthscript.comSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/conversations-that-matter8971/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
