Resolute Together: Serving the Ministry

June 7, 2026The 4-week series, Resolute Together, explores the four core commitments of TBC membership: protecting the unity of the church, joining the mission of the church, supporting the life of the church, and serving the ministry of the church. The challenge for TBC is not whether we should be resolute, but how we can ensure we stand resolute together as a church family. This week, we ask, “Will we serve the ministry of the church?” While serving often brings to mind volunteer roles and ministry opportunities, Scripture reminds us that service begins with the heart. Before we discover our gifts or find places to serve, we are called to develop the humble, servant-hearted mindset of Jesus Christ, who came not to be served, but to serve.Philippians 2:3-8

Several years ago, while Bookbarella was away for a few months, this 1980s fantasy book appeared on her desk and no one ever admitted to leaving it there. She saw a wizard on the cover and tossed it into the future TBC pile, thinking nothing of it. Years later, she was consulting a friend about which books she should pick for TBC episodes this year and he helpfully reminded her that the wizard on the cover is a bit different from most wizards you see on fantasy book covers - he's sitting in a shitty apartment, having just cracked open a foaming beer above a bag of potato chips spilled on the floor. Naturally, she couldn't pass this one up. Today's episode includes our usual barnyard language. TBC is an AI-free production. Audio by Oselka Sound.

Scribando tackles a rare author Patron's Choice this week which we tend not to do that often, since most authors and publicists just fire off an email to any podcast with the word "book" in it and want to be a guest on the show. However, our Patron Jeff seemed to get what was going on here. When asked if he understood the show, he replied: "Honestly, after I had listened to a handful of random episodes both recently and a couple years ago, I think my book might just be on brand for your brand...the book is like an onion with layers and at its core it might be either sweet or stinky depending on your mood that day. I have attached one of the songs from the upcoming album I am going to release soon...after giving it consideration let me know if you want to tackle it." Episode #537: “Refugees are incredibly remarkable. They're working day-in and day-out to provide for their communities, but they're working under a set of assumptions and a set of regulations that prohibited them from working.” Maximillian Mørch, Head of Program Development and Quality Assurance at The Border Consortium, describes how a system built as an emergency response in 1984 has hardened into a four-decade reality along the Thai–Myanmar border. TBC has long provided food, shelter materials, cooking fuel, nutritional support, and technical assistance across nine border camps. Today, more than 100,000 refugees live inside those camps, with tens of thousands more in rural border areas outside the camp system and at least 50,000 in Thailand's cities. The displacement is not temporary, and it has only further deepened again since the 2021 coup. For decades, camp refugees were largely confined. Leaving without authorization risked being treated as an undocumented migrant, and work outside the camps was prohibited. That restriction made food aid the central pillar of survival. Mørch emphasizes that dependence was structural, not moral: refugees sustained their communities through constant labor, but under rules that prevented real economic participation. Over time, the camps evolved from transplanted villages into organized settlements with homes, schools, clinics, markets, religious life, and refugee-led governance. The Karen Refugee Committee and Karenni Refugee Committee oversee services, coordinate with Thai authorities and NGOs, and manage disputes. Yet the system's viability rested on uninterrupted funding—and in 2025 it began to fail. Food and fuel alone exceptionally costly, and funding gaps at one point left camps without food support for weeks, as global humanitarian crises competed for shrinking resources. With return to Myanmar unsafe and resettlement opportunities collapsing—especially after the suspension and termination of a major U.S. process—Thailand's August 2025 resolution granting eligible refugees the right to work marked a historic rupture. The policy reframes survival around income, with research suggesting a week's wages can exceed a month of past food assistance. Labor shortages in Thailand, particularly after reported departures of Cambodian workers, helped push the reform. Eligibility remains limited, rollout is complex, families generally stay in camps, and around 10% of residents will still need direct aid. “Everyone wants to be self-dependent,” he says. “No one wants to be held hostage to the changing fluctuations” of humanitarian funding. Mørch's portrait is of a system forced to reinvent itself—opening a breach in confinement, but not yet a full pathway out.

What if the colleague who drives you up the wall is the one your organisation can't afford to lose?Cathal and Annette are back for a listener-questions special, picking up where last week's conversation with David [surname TBC], former Head of Design at Tesla, left off. The idea that stuck: every team has Mad Hatters and White Rabbits. The Mad Hatters bring the wild, disruptive, sometimes maddening ideas. The White Rabbits keep things running on time. Most organisations over-index on one and quietly punish the other, which is exactly how you lose the creative edge that made you competitive in the first place.Cathal shares why the framework hit home, why psychological safety matters more than surface-level politeness, and why "I don't agree with you" should be a welcome sentence in any good team. He also references his recent LinkedIn post on the thing nobody tells you when you become a manager for the first time: there's no handbook. You're going to get it wrong sometimes. That's fine, as long as you keep showing up and keep supporting the ideas. Then the listener question. Michelle wrote in from retail. She's covering two to three people's roles on her normal shifts and being called in on her days off. She's drained. She can't say no. She's breaking. Annette and Cathal unpack it honestly and the reframe is the gold: the days-off problem isn't the real problem. The root cause is the workload. And there's a way to raise it with her manager that doesn't torch the relationship, with a Plan B ready if it doesn't land.Expect the glass-of-water stress analogy, a useful reframe on supporting failure at work, and a reminder that the people who held the retail and service economy together through Covid deserve better than being treated as infinitely elastic. In this episode:Why Mad Hatters and White Rabbits need each otherThe LinkedIn post Cathal wrote about becoming a managerWhy feeling threatened by a different viewpoint is a trapThe glass of water and what stress does when you hold it too longHow Michelle can raise the workload conversation, with a Plan B readyChapters:00:00 Welcome back01:35 Recap: David on curiosity at Tesla05:38 The Mad Hatter and the White Rabbit11:06 Why entrepreneurial thinkers need air cover12:15 No handbook for being a manager14:05 Why supporting failure is a leadership skill15:03 Listener question: Michelle is running on empty19:08 The glass of water test20:14 How to reframe the conversation upwards25:20 Respect for frontline workers26:15 Next week: Jennifer Moss returnsMentioned in this episode:Last week's interview with David Imai, former Head of Design at Tesla (Apple, Spotify, YouTube)Cathal's recent LinkedIn post on becoming a managerNext week: Jennifer Moss, author of Why Are We Here? This is a reset episode. After months of working behind the scenes, Heather and Mike Bayer come together to do something they have not done for a while: reintroduce themselves, take stock of where the Vacation Rental Formula Business School is now, and talk honestly about what they are building next. If you have been a long-time listener, this is your update. If you are new, this is the best place to start. The conversation covers the full VRF ecosystem, from the just-completed first cohort of the AI Ambassador Program and what Heather has already learned from running it, to the newly launched THRIVE Essentials onboarding course, the opening of five consultancy slots, and the decision to build community through Substack rather than another standalone platform.  What comes through clearly is that the focus has sharpened. VRF is no longer trying to serve everyone in the STR industry. It is building specifically for professional operators who are ready to bring AI into their businesses in a structured, responsible way, and who want experienced guidance rather than just another tool recommendation. About Heather and Mike Bayer Heather Bayer spent 20 years managing CottageLINK Rental Management in Ontario, growing it to nearly 200 properties before selling in 2022. She has hosted the Vacation Rental Success Podcast since 2014, making it the longest-running podcast in the STR space, and has spent the last two years building a focused AI education practice for property management professionals. Mike Bayer is CEO and co-founder of the Vacation Rental Formula Business School. He works across strategy, marketing, technology integration, and community, and joins Heather on the podcast periodically to discuss direction and new programmes. Key Takeaways The AI Ambassador Programme just completed its first cohort. Heather is already rewriting Module 2 because the tools she built the course around have shifted in the months since she wrote it. The second cohort launches in May and will include returning members alongside new participants. A knowledge base is the non-negotiable foundation for any meaningful AI adoption. Before touching any tool, operators need documented business context that gives the AI something real to work with. Without it, output is generic. The AI Ambassador role is not a tech job. It is the person in a company who understands the business well enough to see where AI can reduce friction, and who has the trust of the team to guide adoption without creating resistance. Think conductor, not programmer. THRIVE Essentials is a short onboarding course for new STR employees who may have no background in property management. It covers industry structure, operational roles, technology foundations, values, compliance, and a new AI-in-the-workplace module focused on ethics and safe use. The consultancy model is a 90-day intensive followed by nine months of monthly coaching. It is capped at five clients at a time, starts with a free hour-long discovery call, and is specifically designed around AI adoption and integration. It is not coaching in the general sense; it is bespoke problem-solving for a specific business. Community is now on Substack, specifically the Grounded in AI group. After trying several platforms over the years, Heather and Mike landed on Substack because it combines articles, short notes, and a chat forum in one place with a genuine mobile app, which has consistently been what makes community work for people who are managing a business during the day. We're back, we're sober, and another Boston book has appeared on our digital doorstep! Now That You Have Seen Me was submitted to the show by the author herself sometime over the last two years. Every once in a while it's fun to experience Boston-based fiction and it's been a little bit since we've dealt with an unreliable narrator, so we thought we'd take this for a spin this season. In addition to our usual barnyard language, today's episode includes discussion or mention of drug use, severe mental illness, sex, and just a dash of racism and a pinch of some phobias we gotta' talk about a little bit. Today and next week I have the pleasure of interviewing Mark Cahill. Mark's ministry is evangelism, and from my observation having spent time with him, he is called, in my view, he is gifted and anointed for the task. Mark's been a speaker at our TBC conference, and honestly I don't know anyone more effective in encouraging fellow believers in their witnessing for the Lord. Now, some of Mark's books are One Heartbeat Away; One Thing You Can't Do in Heaven, which we offer here at The Berean Call; and we're going to talk about another book a little later, a little booklet: The Second Greatest Lie Ever Told. So that's coming up.

Kencan Dengan Tuhan - Jumat, 20 Maret 2026Bacaan: "Apa gunanya seorang memperoleh seluruh dunia tetapi kehilangan nyawanya? Amin. (Dod).

God sometimes uses the unlikeliest people and situations to accomplish His purposes. This week, Pastor Jim continues our journey through Judges with a look at the rise of Samson, a judge chosen by God before birth. He was set apart and given great strength. But from the very beginning of his story, Samson proved himself to be unspiritual, disrespectful, and impetuous. He chased pretty foreign women instead of deliverance for his people. And God used Samson's character flaws to spark a one-man war that would devastate the Philistine people. Pastor Jim leaves us with encouragement to obey God willingly, not in spite of ourselves, bringing the sweet honey of God's truth with us everywhere we go.This week, our hosts continue their discussion on the book of Judges, some of the talking points were, the jerks that God uses to fulfill His perfect plan, the lion and the bees, and ways we can grow spiritually. Oh and tune into the beginning to hear our hosts talk about something that a lot of us have been wondering, is TBC still planning on going on their trip to Israel? The wedding feast of Samson painted by Rembrandt: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wedding_Feast_of_Samson#/media/File:Rembrandt_Harmensz._van_Rijn_146.jpgIf you would like to watch the video podcast, find us on YouTube:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCMhDfGn0zfzi6XjcKkSVcFAFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/discovertbcInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/topekabiblechurchWebsite: https://www.discovertbc.com/

We have the guild available with the guild bank open and invite others to join us in Outland. In other Classic news: Reminder that there are now 3 launchers for Classic (‘Original’, ‘Anniversary’, ‘Era’) “Original” Classic is progressing with Mists of Pandaria. The guild is available on Horde side on Galakras. If I have this right, MoP classic uses the modern guild interface so we have the new interface showing 651 members. “Anniversary” Classic which is now at TBC as mentioned above. “Era” classic is a separate launcher with 3 game modes: ‘Classic Era’ which is forever frozen in the original game (pre-TBC). We were on Mankrik here but really no activity or guild. “Season of Discovery” which is where experiments were performed by the devs which some expect may lead to the anticipated “Classic Plus” many hope for. We have no real activity there currently. “Hardcore” is the 3rd game mode in the Era client and probably our 2nd most active within the classic modes. We have an Alliance side guild on Doomhowl and some activity on the Horde side of Doomhowl but no guild currently. Lars plans to return to his attempt at a “Solo Self-Found” run to 60 in Hardcore but that has been on pause for quite some time. We did have guild members make it to 60 on the hardcore server previously. As AI tools like ChatGPT are increasingly capable of analysing financial data, generating reports, and answering complex questions in seconds, many have asked: could AI truly replace a human wealth adviser?Being trusted advisers to our affluent clients for over two decades, this Providend series began with an article by our Client Advisers on clients navigating major life transitions. The podcast goes further, exploring the thoughts behind these transitions. In this podcast episode, Chin Yu and our host, Isaac, explore the challenges of managing a significant inheritance through the case of Nicholas, 35, a regional marketing manager who recently received $3 million following his father's passing. They discuss how inheritance often comes with emotional overload, feelings of guilt, and the pressure to make the “right” financial choices, especially while still grieving and managing the estate.Chin Yu highlights the role of AI tools like ChatGPT, which can provide fast, structured guidance, but stresses that thoughtful wealth planning requires deeper reflection on what a meaningful life, filled with Ikigai-driven decisions, would look like.To better understand the discussion, you may start by reading Chin Yu's article here: Can AI Replace a Human Adviser in Inheritance Planning?Music courtesy of ItsWatR.The host of this episode, Isaac Ong, is a Client Adviser at Providend, the first fee-only wealth advisory firm in Southeast Asia and a leading wealth advisory firm in Asia.Did you know that our Providend's Money Wisdom podcast is now available in video format on YouTube? In today's program, Tom wraps up a two-part series with guest Rob Congdon as they address the topic: What's New with Calvinism? Here's TBC executive director Tom McMahon.Tom: Thanks, Gary. My guest for our second part of this series is Robert Congdon. He's the founder of Congdon Ministries International, CMI, and it's a ministry, as we mentioned last week, that has sought to assist local churches, earlier in Great Britain and particularly in the US, but now he's expanded the work to include other countries. And, as I mentioned, a primary focus of CMI is dealing with the defense of dispensationalism, premillennialism, and we talked last week about the importance of biblical hermeneutics – how anyone who reads the Bible and wants to know what God is saying…we have two other terms, “exegesis” and “eisegesis.” Well, eisegesis is when we approach the Scriptures with what we want it to say, or imposing our own ideas on it, whereas exegesis is trying to figure out what God is saying, and that's the heart of CMI. And, Rob, welcome back to Search the Scriptures 24/7.

Following that, tuck in for hours upon hours (in descending chronological order!) of TBC chat with the Countdown crew.Ashes of Creation - 7:30TBC Call #1 1/30/26 - 2:46:40TBC Call #2 1/23/26 - 5:09:15TBC Call #3 1/9/26 - 6:36:30Buy Josh a beer & help keep Countdown on the airwaves over at Patreon here: https://www.patreon.com/joshcorbett Or if subscriptions aren't your thing, support Josh & Countdown by shouting him a one time beer here: https://ko-fi.com/countdowntoclassicCheck out Josh on YouTube for gameplay streams and live podcast recordings here:https://twitch.tv/countdownpodshttps://www.youtube.com/@countdowntoclassicJoin the Countdown To Classic discord here: https://discord.gg/83thqw2fBwListen To Josh & Jason's short lived rockumentary podcast, 'Best.Album.Ever' here: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/best-album-ever--6195482Check out Josh's hilarious movie podcast here: https://open.spotify.com/show/469qUDnQHBkCogdjZyFUjb?si=jNgDTiEnSvKBbZuNz2xcxw

It wouldn't be a new season of TBC without a Victorian visit from the Antiques Freaks! Dig your Carnacki Bingo cards out of storage and enjoy a live reading of The Story of the Beetle Hunter by Arthur Conan Doyle, all set to the impeccable scoring and sound design talents of Oselka Sound. If you'd rather hear a properly acted, serious version of this story, please check out the Gothic Tales audio book narrated by Gary Furlong. In addition to our usual barnyard language, this episode includes irreverant and sexual humor and some bad Victorian ideas and opinions.
