Trouble is God never stops listening
One of the Twelve—the one called Judas Iscariot—went to the chief priests. . . . — Matthew 26:14 Sometimes I like watching TV shows about police, lawyers, investigators, and criminals. It can be intriguing to try to figure out a person's motive for committing a crime. Sometimes, even long after you can tell who the villain is, the motive is unclear till the very end of the story. I wonder sometimes what motivated Judas to betray Jesus. Was it greed? Was it power? Had he been hoping for an important place in Jesus' kingdom, then learned that Jesus wasn't about worldly power, and then decided to switch sides and join Jesus' enemies for a chance at power instead? Or was his motive maybe altruistic, as in knowing what Jesus had to do—go to the cross and die—and then trying to help that along? Or did Judas perhaps simply not like Jesus and the other disciples and decide he was done with it all? We don't really know. Sometimes I wonder about my own motivations too. Why do I follow Jesus? Why do I do anything that I do on a daily basis? It's important for all of us to examine our motivations from time to time. We need to look at the things we do and make sure we are doing them for the right reasons. Being motivated by love, care, compassion, or purpose is good. Being motivated by greed, personal ambition, or hate is not. What motivates you? Dear God, help us to identify and understand our motives. Help us to act in line with your love in everything we do. Amen.

He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. — Philippians 1:6 I remember a time when everything in my life seemed to be falling apart. I felt like a work in progress that had been abandoned. I began to doubt whether God's promises would be fulfilled in my life. Then a wise mentor reminded me of Philippians 1:6. She shared how God had been faithful in her own life, bringing her through trials and unfinished projects to a place of fulfillment and purpose. Her story gave me hope and renewed my faith in God's ability to complete his work in me. God is not like us; he does not leave things unfinished. When he starts a work in us, he is committed to see it through. The process of transformation and growth can be challenging and slow, but we can trust in God's perfect timing and faithfulness. In self-analysis, I see how God has been at work in my life, shaping me through both triumphs and trials. Every step, whether forward or seemingly backward, has been part of his plan to mold me into the person he created me to be. Today let's take comfort in knowing that God is faithful to complete the work he has started in us. No matter where we are in our journey, we can trust that God is working all things together for our good and to his glory. Dear God, thank you for your faithfulness in our lives. Help us to trust in your timing and process. Strengthen our faith, knowing that you will complete the good work you have begun in us. In Jesus' name, Amen.

The awesome albums keep coming early in 2025 and we'd love to introduce on to you today. Welcome to Episode 55 of This is Not Happening (TINH), an Album of the Month (AOTM) Podcast. In Part 1 we deep dive into an Album that one of us has chosen and in Part 2 we play 'Spin it or Bin it'. We pick a theme and each pick a song that represents that theme. We judge the selections by asking the question 'Spin It or Bin It'?In Part 1, Nolan, resident Hip Hop head stays true to form and brings a new album from a 47 year old artist! Brother Ali's 'Satisfied Soul'. In Part 2, following Brother Ali's exploration of peace, love, faith and religion, our Spin It or Bin It, our theme this month is 'Religion'. ----- Part 1 | Brother Ali | Satisfied Soul -----Nolan has been trying to introduce Brother Ali to us for years but ... there's a lot of music and not a lot of time. Previous album releases have not lined up with podcasts but this time they did! Satisfied Soul is an album that is worth any music fan spending some time with. It is not a niche hip hop album for niche hip hop fans. It's soul music. It's pop music. It's Hip Hop. It's intelligent. It's massively thought provoking and massively accessible to anyone with an open mind and an open ear. Get on it. Please.Listen to the albumhere. This track is not from this album ... but too good not to share Cadillac.Nolan's awesome 'Intro to Brother Ali' playlist can be found here.Buy some stuff here. ----- Part 2 | Spin It or Bin It | 'Religion' -----Popular music and religion have been uncomfortable bedfellows since ... forever. We agreed to each select a track that 'tackles' the theme of religion in any way shape or form;Joey chose Tennessee by Arrested Development.David chose Dear God by XTC.Guy chose Stand on the Wordby The Joubert Singers.Nolan chose Name of God by Mustafa. Here is a link to a this 4 track playlist. When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise. — 2 Corinthians 10:12 In my younger years, I often found myself caught in the trap of comparison. In one situation, for example, I wanted a promotion at work. I watched colleagues advance, seemingly effortlessly, while I struggled with feelings of inadequacy. The more I compared my progress to theirs, the more disheartened I became. I remember spending sleepless nights worrying about how I measured up, rather than focusing on my own growth and abilities. Looking back, I realize how harmful that was. It robbed me of joy and blinded me to the unique gifts and path God had in mind for me. In 2 Corinthians 10 we find some helpful advice about serving the Lord and not worrying about comparisons with others, especially if they think highly of themselves. Today, social media may often magnify the temptation to compare our lives with those of others. We see snapshots of success and happiness, but people rarely reveal their struggles and failures. It's crucial to remember that our worth is not defined by how we stack up against others but by our identity in Christ. As we go through life, let's focus on our personal growth and the unique path God has set before us. May we find contentment in his plan and trust that he is guiding us where we need to be. Dear God, help us to resist the urge to compare ourselves with others. Remind us of our unique worth and purpose in you. With your wisdom may we find contentment in you. Amen.

Bible Reading: 1 Timothy 1:12-17Hannah looked eagerly at the plates of food the waitress set down on the table. She could hardly wait to eat. "Hannah," said Dad, "why don't you lead us in giving thanks today?" Hannah glanced around the busy restaurant. "Right now?" she asked. "What if the waitress comes back with the ketchup?""I'm sure she won't mind waiting," said Dad, and they all bowed their heads. Hannah glanced around again, then mumbled a quick prayer.Luke looked up when she finished. "I couldn't even understand what you said!" "Me neither," said Phoebe. "You talked too fast.""I wasn't praying to you," said Hannah. "God understood me, and He knows I'm thankful.""Hannah's right," said Dad. "God does know what she prayed--but, Hannah, Luke and Phoebe are right too."Mom's eyes met Hannah's. "Do you find it embarrassing to pray?" she asked."No, not usually," said Hannah. "But everybody is watching us here.""Who is?" asked Luke, looking around."Well, it feels like everybody is watching us when we all close our eyes," said Hannah. "Why can't we pray with our eyes open?""It isn't your eyes that God is concerned about--it's your heart," said Dad. "We give thanks as a family before each meal because we know God is the one who provides food for us. He provides everything we need--including forgiveness for our sins and eternal life through Jesus. He has given us so much, and we want to thank Him with grateful hearts." "Exactly," said Mom. "Whether our eyes are open or closed or our prayer is silent or spoken out loud, the important thing is to remember that God provides us with everything we need and thank Him for it." Hannah stared down at her plate, thinking about her parents' words. Then she put down her fork. "Can I pray again?" Mom and Dad nodded."Dear God," Hannah began, and from her heart she thanked God for the food. She finished with a hearty "amen," which was repeated by another "amen" next to the table. Hannah looked up as the waitress smiled and handed her the ketchup. –Heather Tekavec How About You?Do you give thanks before each meal? Even when you're in public and other people can see you? If you feel embarrassed to close your eyes and pray out loud, remember that's not what God is concerned about. What matters to Him is your heart. Do you have a thankful heart? If so, pray and thank Him! Before a meal is often a good time to do that, whether silently or out loud, but don't stop there--give thanks for all the ways God provides for you. Today's Key Verse:Give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. (NLT) (Ephesians 5:20)Today's Key Thought:Thank God for what He provides

Everybody knows you're not supposed to bargain with God. It's just a bad idea. God doesn't answer prayers that begin, “Dear God, if you just give me this one thing I'll do this other thing. For the rest of my life. I promise.”Theologically speaking, we don't give God our terms. He gives us His.But today we have an essay from someone who actually did bargain with God. Hello, beloved. Today, I take off the Japanese kimono. Let's jump in. It's brief. And to the point as a important self reminder. There is a moment in every person's life, a quiet moment, usually where you sit with yourself, feeling more raw than whole and wonder, Dear God, Angels and Guides……will I ever be fully at peace? Look….The world with all its noise and expectations, has sold us a lie that healing is about fixing what's broken.By now we know that healing isn't about fixing. What if it's about becoming? I sat with this question recently, reflecting on my own journey. Healing, I've learned, is not a finish line. It's not a race to achieve perfection or emerge as some flawless, shiny version of ourselves. It's a process, a dance of expansion and contraction, where we are called not to fix, but to live.1. Healing doesn't wait for perfection. Here's the truth, no one tells you. The universe doesn't pause for you to get your act together. Your messy, imperfect self is still worthy of acceleration. Healing doesn't wait for you to feel ready. It sweeps you into its arms, wild and unapologetic, and says, Here, let's go.2. Healing happens in the doing after the being, not in the waiting. Growth looks like chaos before it feels like clarity. Imagine this. You're standing at the edge of a stage, heart pounding, knowing this is your moment to step into your power. This is the alchemy of life, the simultaneous breaking and becoming. Illness is a message, not a punishment. When our bodies break down under elevated stress, we think, what did I do wrong? But here's the thing, healing isn't linear.3. Illness isn't karma or failure. It's the body's way of saying, Slow down, feel this, expand gently. This is a reminder to stop shaming yourself for the ways the body begs for peace of mind and rest, and instead honor it as a sacred part of the process. 4. The universe doesn't prioritize perfection have perfection. Have you ever looked at a sunset and thought, this could be better? Of course not. The universe doesn't aim for perfection. It aims for experience, a crooked snowstorm, a lopsided smile, an unpolished journey. That's where the magic lives. The same goes for you. You were never meant to be perfect. You were meant to be alive. 5. Course corrections are a gift. Life will throw you off course, often. When it does, it's not punishment, it's an invitation. A moment to pivot, recalibrate, and step closer to the truest version of yourself. Every unexpected turn is the universe whispering, …….This way, love. Try this instead. 6. Expansion seeks BALANCE, and is messy - that's MORE THAN OKAY. Here's a liberating truth. Expansion doesn't always feel good. Sometimes it feels like heat, like cookie dough melting into a cookie in the oven. The dough doesn't understand the heat. It only knows the discomfort. But one day it emerges golden, transformed. And that's you. So my loves, let go of the illusion that healing is a pristine, pain free ascent. It's a wild, messy unfolding. It's about saying yes to life, even when you're trembling, stepping into the unknown, even when your knees shake. Because healing isn't about arriving somewhere perfect. It's about becoming someone free.Love, Kassandra.Desire to know what's under the hood to surface what matters so you can have newfound clarity and yes - peace? Day 6 From the Sayings of St. Anthony of the Desert: A hunter in the desert saw Abba Anthony enjoying himself with the brethren and he was shocked. Wanting to show him that it was necessary sometimes to meet the needs of the brethren, the old man said to him, “Put an arrow in your bow and shoot it.” So, he did. The old man said, “Shoot another,” and he did so. Then the old man said, “Shoot yet again,” and the hunter replied “If I bend my bow so much I will break it.” Then the old man said to him, “It is the same with the work of God. If we stretch the brethren beyond measure they will soon break. Sometimes it is necessary to come down to meet their needs.” When he heard these words the hunter was pierced by compunction and, greatly edified by the old man, he went away. As for the brethren, they went home strengthened. Dear God, St Anthony of the Desert accepted your call to renounce the world and to love you above all things. He faithfully served you in the solitude of the desert by fasting, prayer, humility and good works. In the Sign of the Cross, he triumphed over the devil. Through his intercession, may we learn to love you better; with all our hearts, all our souls, all our minds, all our strength and to love our neighbors as we love ourselves. St Anthony, great and powerful saint, intercede for us also for this special request (mention your request). We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with God the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen St. Anthony of the Desert, pray for us. Day 2 From the Sayings of St. Anthony of the Desert: Someone asked Abba Anthony, "What must one do in order to please God?" The old man replied, "Pay attention to what I tell you: whoever you may be, always have God before your eyes, whatever you do, do it according to the testimony of the holy Scriptures; in whatever place you live, do not easily leave it. Keep these three precepts and you will be saved." Dear God, St Anthony of the Desert accepted your call to renounce the world and to love you above all things. Day 1 From the Sayings of St. Anthony of the Desert: When the holy Abba Anthony lived in the desert he was beset by acedia (lack of care, sloth), and attacked by many sinful thoughts. He said to God, "Lord, I want to be saved but these thoughts do not leave me alone; what shall I do in my affliction? How can I be saved?" A short while afterward, when he got up to go out, Anthony saw a man like himself sitting at his work, getting up from his work to pray, then sitting down again and plaiting a rope, then getting up again to pray. It was an angel of the Lord sent to correct and reassure him. He heard the angel saying to him, "Do this and you will be saved." At these words, Anthony was filled with joy and courage. He did this, and he was saved. Dear God, St Anthony of the Desert accepted your call to renounce the world and to love you above all things. It shall burn out all dross of the mortal mind, smallness of nature, meanness of spirit, vindictiveness, jealousy. It shall burn out all carelessness of your habits, in the outer realms of your being. My Law and My Order can then function perfectly in your life. Then and then only will you be a worthy vessel for the inflow of My Spirit. Then and then only can My Spirit flow through you to other of My children. Likewise shall all disease be burned from the physical body, that nothing shall interfere with My Plan for your life. As the sigh of your spirit disturbs the flame and makes the candle drip, so the faintest wavering of your feet from the path of attainment causes a less steady burning of My Flame in your heart, and My Work goes on in imperfection. Oh, My Beloved, how necessary that you live with the eye single, to the high purpose of your calling. But you have many helpers. No soul who enters the path is left to walk alone. So go on, day by day, with the light and assurance of My Love in your face. Mighty Ones whom you see not, are by your side. And the forces of darkness shall touch you not."-Eva Bell Werber, ‘Quiet Talks the Master'"Dear God, help me to not lose sight of your presence when things are going well."-UnknownSupport the show
