My dad is back and we catch up on all things dopey and life including Alan's deeply specific breakfast routine. Dave also reads listener emails and comments about grief, recovery, Motley Crue, Safe Spot, Steve Poltz, Dopey socks, and whether celebrities actually bring the Dopey. Then the episode replays Dave's interview with the legendary Danny Trejo. Danny talks about growing up in Pacoima, smoking weed at eight, using heroin at twelve, idolizing his Uncle Gilbert, surviving violence, robberies, prison, Soledad, heroin withdrawal in the hole, and finally finding recovery through 12-step programs and a higher power. He also talks about his kids, helping addicts get treatment instead of prison, staying clean for decades, why he can't smoke weed, acting as a way to revisit—but not live in—the darkness, and why food, tacos, and pancakes can sometimes reach people better than lectures. Episode is from 2022The Big Book says we are powerless over one thing - alcohol.Yet it goes on and on about our ability to impact those around us, in both helpful and in unhelpful ways. Powerless means having "an inability to influence". And the definition of influence: the capacity to have an effect on the character, development, or behavior of someone or something, or the effect itself. In this episode I talk about this and I answer some of your questions.email: sarcasticbigbook@gmail.com

I grew up with a young, single mom, and the early years at home were tumultuous. Finances were tight, and things often felt unstable. From a very young age, I could eat as much as my grandfather. There was no real connection between feeling full and stopping. I was a chubby kid, taller than my classmates, and became very aware of how I ate in front of others. I tried dieting, but I couldn't stick to anything. I remember thinking, " Why lose weight if I'm just going to gain it back?” Even as a teenager, I sensed something deeper -- that I was dealing with a real condition. I attended my first Food Addicts in Recovery Anonymous (FA) meeting as a senior in high school. I heard food addiction described as a medical issue rather than a failure of willpower, like I had read in fashion magazines. That changed everything. When I began following the FA food plan with clear boundaries and structured meals, life started to shift. I experienced mental clarity, my anxiety began to ease, and I felt a sense of peace. After twenty-eight years in FA, the obsession is gone. Removing sugar and flour, along with using the tools of the program, has taken away that constant need to eat -- something no diet ever did. I felt supported through every stage of life, from weighing and measuring food in my college dorm to dating, marriage, and raising three children. The daily routine of recovery in FA is second nature now, and it has created space for me to grow into who I am. Today, I have a Higher Power, a beautiful community, and a full life. This is a “we” program. I don't have to do this alone, and I no longer live in the struggle

Laura Clery built an empire being the funniest person on the internet — 26 million followers, three books, a character (Pamela Pupkin) people quote back to her in the street. The 1% in Recovery Successful Gamblers & Alcoholics Stopping Addiction
Text and Be HeardWe're recording live from Holy Name retreat center in Houston, Texas, surrounded by people doing the work at a 12-step retreat for compulsive gamblers. There's something powerful about stepping out of your normal routine for a focused Friday-to-Sunday reset: fewer distractions, more honesty, and enough quiet space to hear yourself think. But what really changes people is not the schedule or the setting. It's the willingness to sit down, talk to others, and finally move forward on the steps instead of circling the same problems for another year. We dig into what makes recovery retreats effective, especially the blend of structured step sessions and real fellowship. Over shared meals and long stretches of unhurried time, people open up, compare notes on where they are in the 12 steps, and find the courage to finish what they started. We also talk about why retreats are about more than spiritual growth. Emotional growth is the engine of lasting change, and that means facing the parts we'd rather avoid: inventory, amends, character patterns, resentment, stubbornness, and the beliefs we hold about a Higher Power. A big theme is brain change and emotional sobriety. Addiction recovery isn't solved by willpower or “thinking harder” because you can't out think an emotional issue. We connect the dots between neuroplasticity and daily practices that support healthier chemistry over time like natural dopamine, serotonin, endorphins, and oxytocin through connection, joy, and consistent action. If you've been craving a clearer next step, we also point to the Recovery Growth Scorecard as a free tool to help you start tracking real growth. If this resonates, subscribe to 1% In Recovery, share the episode with someone who needs hope, and leave a quick review so more people can find the message. He opens up about sleeping on the streets, losing hope, and believing that recovery simply wasn't possible for someone like him. The conversation dives into the realities of addiction, what life is actually like for people living unhoused, and the devastating toll drugs take on families, friendships, and self-worth. How can you be strong in your faith? When you consider religion and various beliefs, how can we know anything is the truth? What is belief anyway and how can we know that something is true? Might it be irrational to believe in a God or Higher Power? Lisa continues the conversation today with NYT bestselling author Eldon Taylor, Ph.D., who examines these ideas and more. He talks about how there are good people everywhere, who cross all barriers – whether they reject organized religion and spirituality or not. Eldon talks about how what you believe can, and does, have a huge impact on the quality of your life — from success in business to success in relationships, from your ability to learn and master new subjects to your ability to heal your own body. In his latest book, "Questioning Spirituality," he deeply considers the idea of a God and/or Higher Power and how it seems our institutions of higher learning tend to go against this idea. An intellectual elitism exists in which students, and professors, may think that although it's comforting to consider believing in a God, it's simply not rational. The idea for his latest book started after numerous conversations with Eldon's college-aged sons, both of whom were studying away at Ivy League schools. Although they grew up with a strong sense of faith, they returned home from university as atheists. Students are taught critical thinking in college. This naturally leads to the questioning of religion. Is it possible to be both a critical thinker and hold belief in a Higher Power? Eldon presents both sides of the argument – and proposes that it's not at all irrational to believe. Eldon Taylor has been researching the power of the mind for the past 25 years and is considered to be an expert in the areas of hypnosis and subliminal communication. For more than ten years, Eldon specialized in criminalistics, where he supervised and conducted investigations and testing to detect deception. Today, Eldon is President and Director of Progressive Awareness Research, Inc. He has developed and patented the InnerTalk technology, which has been demonstrated by numerous universities to be effective. Eldon is an award-winning, NYT best-selling author of more than 300 books, and audio and video programs. Info: eldontaylor.com. This is Part 2 of the interview.

God, As We Understand Him One of the most misunderstood phrases in Alcoholics Anonymous is found in Step Three: "God as we understood Him." For some, those words bring comfort. For others, they bring questions, doubts, or even resistance. The founders of AA recognized that people come from different backgrounds, beliefs, and experiences. That's why the program doesn't ask us to adopt someone else's understanding of God. Instead, it invites us to become willing to seek a Power greater than ourselves—one that can restore hope, direction, and sanity to our lives. Many of us arrived in recovery carrying baggage from religion, disappointment, anger, or confusion. Others had no belief at all. Yet countless alcoholics have discovered that recovery doesn't begin with having all the answers. It begins with willingness, open-mindedness, and the simple recognition that self-will alone wasn't enough. Today on The Daily Trudge, we're talking about what "God as we understand Him" really means. How does our understanding change over time? Why did AA leave room for individual experience? And how can we develop a relationship with a Higher Power that is real, personal, and meaningful? Because recovery isn't about having a perfect understanding of God. It's about becoming willing to seek Him. #TheDailyTrudge #AA #StepThree #HigherPower #GodAsWeUnderstandHim #Recovery #Sobriety #SpiritualGrowth #TheDailyTrudge

Is There A Substitute? Yes, There Is... In A Vision For You, the Big Book asks one of the most important questions in all of recovery: "Is there no exception to this rule?" If alcohol was our solution, what could possibly replace it? The answer comes a few pages later. The authors tell us that there is a substitute—and it is vastly more than that. It is a fellowship in Alcoholics Anonymous. For years, many of us used alcohol to deal with fear, loneliness, resentment, boredom, anxiety, and life itself. Drinking wasn't just a habit; it became our answer to everything. When alcohol was removed, we were left with a huge question: Now what? The Big Book's answer isn't simply meetings. It isn't just not drinking. The substitute is a new way of living. A fellowship. A Higher Power. A purpose. A connection with people who understand us. A life centered on helping others rather than escaping ourselves. Today on The Daily Trudge, we're talking about the substitute described in A Vision For You. What replaces the obsession? What fills the void? And why did the founders believe that connection, service, and spiritual growth could accomplish what alcohol never could? Because recovery isn't just about taking something away. It's about finding something better. #TheDailyTrudge #AVisionForYou #BigBook #Recovery #AA #Sobriety #Fellowship #SpiritualAwakening #OneAlcoholicHelpingAnother

Recover Your Soul: A Spiritual Path to a Happy and Healthy Life
Depression can feel incredibly isolating, heavy, and difficult to explain—especially when you're trying so hard just to keep moving through life. In this episode, Rev Rachel shares her personal experience with depression, anxiety, addiction, emotional overwhelm, and the spiritual journey that slowly helped her begin reconnecting with herself, her soul, and a deeper sense of hope. This conversation is not about bypassing mental health or pretending there is a quick fix. It's about compassion. It's about understanding that being human is complex, and that our emotional pain, patterns, beliefs, stories, nervous systems, and spiritual journeys are all deeply connected and there is light on the other side.Through the lens of the Recover Your Soul process, this episode explores how depression can sometimes become a protective response to overwhelming emotions, fear, stress, trauma, and self-rejection. Rev Rachel shares how learning to accept herself, release control, process old pain, and reconnect with her Higher Power became part of her healing journey alongside therapy, medication, and spiritual practice. In this episode, we explore: Depression from a spiritual and emotional healing perspective The connection between addiction, anxiety, and depression Why feelings are important information The role of medication and self-compassion in healing Patterns, beliefs, and stories that contribute to emotional suffering Letting go of self-rejection and learning to love yourself Finding hope and beginning your healing journey one step at a timeIf you are walking through a dark season right now, this episode is a reminder that you are not broken, you are not alone, and healing is possible in many different forms.Send a one way text to Rev Rachel

This includes unlearning codependent behaviors. She defines her recovery as eternally spiritually detoxing from earthly programming and living in pure bliss. This is the second episode in the step work series with Sonia Kahlon. Co host of the sisters in sobriety podcast and a woman in long term recovery. And I'm tellin you, she is coming in HOT about Step 2! Before we dive in, a quick announcement. The show notes of every episode contain a summary, all the action steps and all the books mentioned in the episode. There is also a resources tab you'll want to check out with a bunch of free guides like how to have sober fun, 30 tips for your first 30 days, as well as links to the YouTube channel. You can find all of these free resources to enrich your recovery, at odaatchat.com. So, after this week's recording, it got me wondering. What if the thing standing between you and the steps is the feeling that the language just doesn't apply to you? That the Big Book is too old, too religious, or too far removed from what we actually know about trauma, neuroscience, and mental health? This conversation with Sonia, who has never worked the steps, is a real, unfiltered walk through Step 2 of the 12 steps: "Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity." Although Sonia came in "not loving step 2" as she puts it, What unfolded might surprise you! We talk about: Why the word "sanity" in Step 2 might just be a semantic issue - and what it actually means How to build a concept of a higher power that's personal, flexible, and makes sense to you We share stories of "God shots" and synchronicity that feel like "spiritual experiences" How the pause between your impulse and your reaction is where your higher power can work, and how to access it. So without further delay, please enjoy this episode with Sonia, and if you do, share it with a friend struggling with the steps
