In December 2016, a US official in Havana went to the embassy medical centre to report a debilitating and confounding  illness. The symptoms included headaches; nausea; hearing loss; problems with memory and vision – and its onset was characterized by hearing… something. A buzzing, hissing, grinding… sound. Soon, a second official came down with the same symptoms. Then a third. Then a fourth. By the time the story went public in summer 2017, dozens of US diplomats, as well as some Canadians, had come down with what was becoming known as “Havana Syndrome.” In this deep dive investigation, journalist Nicky Woolf peels back the layers of one of the most bizarre mysteries of the modern age. The Sound is a story about spycraft, technology, and the brain. It’s a story where, at every turn, you’re never quite sure what’s real and what’s an illusion. The Sound: Mystery of Havana Syndrome podcast is a captivating and well-produced series that delves into the baffling phenomenon known as Havana Syndrome. The podcast provides extensive historical information, introduces compelling characters, and incorporates impressive music and sound design elements. The research behind the podcast is evident, with in-depth interviews with whistleblowers, experts from various agencies, and on-the-ground experiences in Havana. This podcast goes beyond other coverage of Havana Syndrome by avoiding reliance on a single source and instead presents a more comprehensive and ethical approach to reporting.

One of the best aspects of this podcast is its dedication to thorough research and fact-checking. The producers have taken the time to bring in experts and investigate multiple angles of the story to ensure accuracy and provide listeners with a well-rounded understanding of Havana Syndrome. Additionally, the narrator/reporter's voice is captivating, drawing listeners in and keeping them engaged throughout the episodes. The sound design is also noteworthy, enhancing the storytelling experience and adding depth to the narrative.

However, one criticism of this podcast is that it spends too much time discussing the "psychogenic" or "mass hysteria" theories surrounding Havana Syndrome. While it is important to address all possible explanations for such phenomena, some listeners may find these parts difficult to get through or feel that they detract from the overall pacing and momentum of the series.

In conclusion, The Sound: Mystery of Havana Syndrome stands out as one of the best podcasts available on this subject matter. Its thorough research, compelling storytelling, excellent narration, and immersive sound design make it a must-listen for anyone interested in understanding the truth behind Havana Syndrome. Despite some minor flaws in its balance between different theories, this podcast sets a high standard for investigative journalism within the medium of podcasting.

It's called Fur & Loathing, and this time he's digging into another very different unsolved mystery. In early December 2014 at the Hyatt Regency hotel in Rosemont, Illinois, an unusual gathering was taking place: Midwest Furfest, the world's largest convention for a subculture known as Furries. The party was in full swing when attendees suddenly find themselves struggling to breathe. Something terrible has happened: poisonous levels of chlorine gas were sweeping through the hotel corridors. Nineteen people are hospitalized and hundreds are evacuated. Hazmat teams trace the gas to a stairwell, where they find the remains of a chemical bomb. This was an intentional attack. But almost a decade later, the identity of the perpetrator remains a mystery. In Fur and Loathing, Nicky takes on the unsolved case, working closely with Furries to find answers.
