“This machine kills narcissists. Shoutout to Woody Guthrie! Sorry for missing the love notes on Friday; I'm not a machine. In this episode, we talk about Aries Season and the need to listen to what is not being said. It's a different way to analyze your situation. If they are not expressing it in the common way, why? There's meaning and clues from the subconscious mind within everything we say and do. Listen deeper to feel the actual message. What lies below the surface of that offhand statement? Anyway, then we discuss situations by zodiac. They are situationships for a reason. After that, I try something new: talking cards. I let two decks talk to one another. It's interesting, and I'll be doing it again—I just need a little more practice with that method. Of course, this all makes sense in the end with the Homeward Traveler card from the Oracle of Hidden Worlds deck. Home free! What a good feeling! If you're feeling trapped, know that this is not your home; it's only a stop along your way to your rightful home. Keep moving on, and you'll find that place that brings you peace. And remember, this land was made for you and me! Happy Birthday to all my listeners with birthdays this season!” I'll be back next week!!! Missed you all! Want a tarot reading on the show? ***This episode has been our Jonah and has been cursed from the beginning! We are re-releasing it because the first version had fuzzy audio***Chris and Simon wind up the old gramophone and share some numbers from angelic choirs, the nodding ones beyond the grave, and from the rarely good people in the hollow hill. Sing along with a banshee! Trill to a phantom air from Dartmoor! Rhapsodize over an orca's mermaid song! And shake your tambourine at yellow bats, breeding foxes, Dolly Parton and finger-chewing nereids! Are our listeners in harmony with the Music of the Spheres or are these mysterious melodies something more mundane? Future Ecologies presents "The Right to Feel," a two episode mini-series on the emotional realities of the climate crisis. The second and final episode, “Eulogies,” is based on fictional writing from the class. Students imagine and eulogize something that could be harmed by the climate emergency, and then imagine a speculative future in which action was taken to mitigate that harm.Over a two-year period, associate professor of climate justice and co-director of the UBC Centre for Climate Justice Naomi Klein taught a small graduate seminar designed to help young scholars put the emotions of the climate and extinction crises into words. The students came from a range of disciplines, ranging from zoology to political science, and they wrote eulogies for predators and pollinators, alongside love letters to paddling and destroyed docks. Across these diverse methods of scholarship, the students uncovered layers of emotion far too often left out of scholarly approaches to the climate emergency. They put these emotions into words, both personal reflections and fictional stories.“The Right to Feel” was produced on the unceded and asserted territories of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), and Səl̓ílwətaʔ (Tsleil-Waututh) peoples.Find a transcript, citations, credits, and more at www.futureecologies.net/listen/the-right-to-feel— — —Part 2: Eulogies02:15 – Clione by Annika Ord12:49 –The Abundance Will Be Forever by Judith Burr24:03 – A Eulogy for Wolves by Niki33:33 – Return of the Hidden Worlds by Sadie Rittman44:59 — Eulogy for the Bees by Rhonda Thygesen

Thanks for listening to The Professor. There will be a brand new Hidden Worlds series coming soon. In the meantime, we wanted to share The Burden — a new investigative true-crime podcast from Orbit Media. The show tells the story of Detective Louis Scarcella, once celebrated for his prowess in solving tough cases in 1990s New York City. But then a group of convicted murderers-turned-jailhouse lawyers made a startling discovery that linked all their cases: Scarcella was the cop who helped put them away. They said they were innocent — and that Scarcella coerced witnesses. They made a vow: Take down Scarcella. And with the help of a relentless New York Times reporter, they did just that. Twenty people Scarcella helped put behind bars have since walked free. In the media, he's known as the disgraced, rogue cop who hoodwinked an entire system. But was this really the workings of one person? The Burden is out now. To listen to the rest of the series, search for The Burden wherever you listen to podcasts.
How can journalists, activists, dissidents and even lawyers and business leaders protect themselves from the threat of private surveillance? That's the question we're looking to answer this week on Whale Hunting, with a special interview from our archives. Back in 2022, Whale Hunting host Bradley Hope took a look into the hidden world of private surveillance – a world he's gotten to know personally in his work investigating corruption over the years. To find out more, he spoke with an industry insider – codenamed Oscar Zero – who has dedicated her career to this kind of work. They met at a restaurant in London, where she explained how she got into private surveillance, and the ways in which this shadowy practice is employed by oligarchs, intelligence services and the ultra-rich all over the world. Plus, if you'd like to watch Bradley try and outwit Oscar Zero and her surveillance team, head to Brazen's YouTube channel, where you can find our documentary, Hidden Worlds, following the action. Veres receives some photographs of parts of the Caravaggio canvas. He follows the lead to a source in Belgium, who is close to the Sicilian mafia. The source provides crucial new information about what happened to the painting. And it points to one man: a mafioso who has been on the run for thirty years. This week on Fat Leonard we're sharing the first episode of a new four-part series from Brazen called ‘The Professor'. William Veres is in trouble. In 2018 he was arrested following the largest ever investigation by the Italian police's art squad. They accuse him of running a pan-European art-smuggling ring with ties to the Sicilian mafia. He is alleged to have stolen $40 million worth of art and antiquities from Italy. Charged with 14 counts, including money laundering, forgery, wire fraud and conspiracy, he faces a jail term of up to 20 years. But he has a plan to get out of trouble. In this four-part podcast, host Simon Willis follows him as he puts that plan into action. It's a story that takes listeners deep into the underworld, and into the dark heart of the most famous criminal organization of them all – Cosa Nostra. It is a story of drug dealers, hitmen, smugglers, spies – even a corrupt prime minister. And in the middle of it all is William Veres's quest to save himself. How? By solving the coldest cold case in the history of art crime – the theft of Caravaggio's Nativity. Veres gets word that the mafia are willing to talk about returning stolen art. He meets a group of middlemen in Naples, who tell him there's a canvas on offer. As Veres negotiates the return of the painting, we begin to doubt Veres and Brand's account of how they recover stolen art. It looks like they risk breaking the law to get the painting back. In his quest to get himself out of trouble, is Veres getting himself deeper into it? Don't want to wait for the next episode? Veres goes to Belgium to meet a contact who he believes can help him obtain vital information about the Caravaggio painting. The contact agrees to act as Veres's go-between, connecting Veres with senior figures in the mafia hierarchy. Meanwhile, host Simon Willis delves into the past investigations of the case, and finds out why the official investigation went nowhere: it was closed down after it uncovered links between the Caravaggio theft and Mafiosi close to Italian politicians. Are they encounters with parallell dimensions? And, incredibly enough, is this an intelligent phenomena? In other words, are these experiences "chosen" to experience this strangeness or is it just some random event? Or some other unusual phenomena at play here? Join us for this incredible journey. What I learned from rereading Zero to One: Notes on Startups, or How to Build the Future by Peter Thiel. This episode is brought to you by: Tiny: The easiest way to sell your business. Quick and straightforward exits for Founders. Fable: Make your product accessible to more people. Tegus is a search engine for business knowledge that's used by Founders, investors, and executives. Subscribe to listen to Founders Daily (my new daily podcast)[4:01] Jobs's return to Apple 12 years later shows how the most important task in business-the creation of new valuecannot be reduced to a formula and applied by professionals.[5:00] A really important sentence to understand one of the main points in Peter's book: Apple's value crucially depended on the singular vision of a particular person.[5:00] A unique founder can make authoritative decisions, inspire strong personal loyalty, and plan ahead for decades.[6:00] Conspiracy: Peter Thiel, Hulk Hogan, Gawker, and the Anatomy of Intrigue and Zero to One: Notes on Startups, or How to Build the Future (Founders #31)[7:00] Properly understood, any new and better way of doing things is technology.[8:00] By creating new technologies we rewrite the plan of the world.[9:00] The paradox of teaching entrepreneurship is that such a formula necessarily cannot exist; because every innovation is new and unique, no authority can prescribe in concrete terms how to be innovative. The single most powerful pattern I have noticed is that successful people find value in unexpected places, and they do this by thinking about business from first principles instead of formulas.[10:00] The minute that you understand that you can poke life and actually something will pop out the other side, that you can change it, you can mold it. That's maybe the most important thing. It's to shake off this erroneous notion that life is there and you're just gonna live in it, versus embrace it, change it, improve it, make your mark upon it. —Steve Jobs[11:00] Brilliant thinking is rare, but courage is in even shorter supply than genius.[13:00] A startup is the largest group of people you can convince of a plan to build a different future. A new company's most important strength is new thinking.[14:00] What follows is not a manual or a record of knowledge but an exercise in thinking. Because that is what a startup has to do: question received ideas and rethink business from scratch.[14:00] The Founders: The Story of Paypal and the Entrepreneurs Who Shaped Silicon Valley by Jimmy Soni. (Founders #233)[17:00] Their casual way of conducting affairs did not appeal to me. — Random Reminiscences of Men and Events by John D. Rockefeller (Founders #148)[18:00] My number one repeated learning in life: There Are No Adults. Everyone's making it up as they go along. Figure it out yourself, and do it. —Naval Ravikant[19:00] Bill Gurley's answer to the question For people who were there, does this feel like dot-com bust level unwiding yet? Yes. Link to tweet[21:00] Peter's 4 principles for founders:1. It is better to risk boldness than triviality.2. A bad plan is better than no plan.3. Competitive markets destroy profits.4. Sales matters just as much as product.[22:00] The most contrarian thing of all is not to oppose the crowd but to think for yourself.[22:00] By “monopoly,” we mean the kind of company that's so good at what it does that no other firm can offer a close substitute.[24:00] Every business is successful exactly to the extent that it does something others cannot.[25:00] Durability has always been a first rate virtue in Charlie's eyes. — Poor Charlie's Almanack: The Wit and Wisdom of Charles T. Munger. (Founders #90)[27:00] If you focus on near-term growth above all else, you miss the most important question you should be asking: will this business still be around a decade from now?[27:00] There is no shortcut to monopoly[28:00] A substantive advantage makes your product difficult or impossible to replicate.[30:00] The perfect target market for a startup is a small group of particular people concentrated together and served by few or no competitors.[32:00] Shallow men believe in luck. Strong men believe in cause and effect.[32:00] Victory awaits him who has everything in order.[33:00] My heroes are people who took epic journeys into the unknown often at substantial personal risk. I am simply following the path that they carved into history. —Explore/Create My Life in Pursuit of New Frontiers, Hidden Worlds, and the Creative Spark by Richard Garriott.[35:00] Instead of pursuing many-sided mediocrity and calling it "wellroundedness," a definite person determines the one best thing to do and then does it. She strives to be great at something substantive— to be a monopoly of one.[36:00] Long-term planning is often undervalued by our indefinite short-term world.[39:00] Monopoly businesses capture more value than millions of undifferentiated competitors.[40:00] Most startups fail and most venture funds fail with them.[43:00] You cannot trust a world that denies the power law to accurately frame your decisions for you, so what's most important is rarely obvious. It might even be a secret.[44:00] I also believed then, as I do now after more than fifty years as a money manager, that the surest way to get rich is to play only those games or make those investments where I have an edge. — A Man for All Markets: From Las Vegas to Wall Street, How I Beat the Dealer and the Market by Ed Thorp. (Founders #222)[45:00] Schlep Blindness by Paul Graham [46:00] Great companies can be built on open but unsuspected secrets about how the world works.[47:00] Conspiracy: A True Story of Power, Sex, and a Billionaire's Secret Plot to Destroy a Media Empire by Peter Thielby Ryan Holiday[48:00] The best entrepreneurs know this: every great business is built around a secret that's hidden from the outside.[51:00] Keith Rabois on Peter Theil insisting on focus[54:00] Superior sales and distribution by itself can create a monopoly, even with no product differentiation. The converse is not true.[56:00] Advertising doesn't exist to make you buy a product right away; it exists to embed subtle impressions that will drive sales later. Anyone who cannot acknowledge its likely effect on himself is doubly deceived.I use Readwise to organize and remember everything I read.
