There's Food at Home is about the triumphs and tribulations of the post grad years. From job hunting, budgeting, dealing with stress, and finding friends; each episode we talk about what we didn't learn in class during college. Whether you are in college wanting to know what it's like in the real world, are in the real world trying to manage it all, or love a good story and inspiring people, this one is for those who finally get when their parents said "there's food at home."
This month's episode is with Natalie Riso (@natalieriso), Content Marketer at 500 Startups, 3X LinkedIn Top Voice, and Mover and Shaker in the Marketing/Building Community/Mental Health arena. Natalie understands entrepreneurship because she created her own events startup and at her current role, works with founders on a daily basis. We discuss attributes most successful entrepreneurs possess and Natalie demystifies the entrepreneurship persona (spoiler: not every CEO is Gary V). When talking about entrepreneurship, passion projects and following your passions always seems to come up. Natalie provides guidance to those just getting started in entrepreneurship and wondering how a 9-5 can fit in. As Natalie said "no one gave me permission to start a company," and we can translate that resilience and determination into everything we do personally and professionally. Entrepreneurship Resources Mentioned: Flik, The a16z Podcast, The Twenty Minute VC, Harvard Business Review, and Vox
Catherine chats with two highly motivated college seniors, Lauren Kalo (@laurenkalo) and Amanda Whitfield (@amandacwhitifeld), to discuss how their senior year of college is unfolding during a pandemic. We talk about how they are staying motivated while online schooling, and what they are excited for and nervous for post-grad. Catherine also answers their questions about post-grad including the importance of networking, how to move on from a mistake, and how to define your voice. Optimism and staying positive are the common themes between these three UNCG leaders.
How do you find an apartment in a city you have never been? What's the process of buying a condo at 24 years old? How do you decorate your new apartment in a sophisticated way on a budget? On this month's episode we cover all things apartment hunting and your living situation once you graduate college. I am joined by my best friend from college, Paige Dyman (@paigedyman), who works with real estate agents daily and just bought a condo (and yes, you guessed it, she is 24 years old). Paige is a minimalist and I am a collector of things so we discuss our two styles and how we decorate our homes to express ourselves and create a relaxing environment to destress. Catherine sits down with 4 of her friends from college to talk about how friendships change post-grad life. During the episode they answer: How do you meet friends when you move to a new city or during Covid-19? How do you stay in touch with friends from college? What makes a good and bad friendship? And lastly, in our current society, how do you diversify your friendship and have tough conversations with friends who don't align with your values or morals? The key takeaways from the episode are you need to put in the effort if you want to make friends (and keep friends), stay true to yourself, and in order to be a good friend you need to look inward first. Catherine chats via webcam (we are practicing social distancing here) with her first friend in DC, Prescillia Messa (@prescilliamessa), about how they are coping with a life in a global pandemic.
