As traditional career paths break down, economic mobility is being redefined by adaptability, not academic credentials. Today, 52% of college graduates are underemployed a year after graduation, working in roles that don't require a four-year degree. Meanwhile, networking strategies like informational interviews yield one job offer per 12 conversations—far more effective than the one-in-200 odds of resume submissions. These realities underscore the need for new workforce models, like the Career Game Loop, which prioritize agility, skill-building, and game-informed strategies to help individuals navigate an evolving labor market. Can gamified career navigation unlock more inclusive access to middle-class jobs—and help close the skills gap faster than legacy education systems? In the first of a three-part DisruptED series, host Ron Stefanski sits down with Jessica Lindl, Vice President of Ecosystem Growth at Unity, to explore how her work—and her bestselling book The Career Game Loop: Learn to Earn in the New Economy—reimagines career development through game design, skill-building, and opportunity alignment.Key Highlights from the Conversation:Gaming as a Learning Engine: Lindl explains how high-quality video games build durable skills like collaboration and problem-solving skills that employers increasingly demand. The Career Game Loop Framework: She introduces a four-step model—Career Quest, Level Up, Job Hunt, Job Craft—that helps individuals adapt to a fast-changing labor market.Unity's Scalable Pathways: Over one million students now use Unity's certification and learning tools annually, bypassing traditional four-year degrees to access entry-level tech jobs.Jessica Lindl is a senior executive and bestselling author with over two decades of leadership in education technology, workforce development, and social impact. At Unity Technologies, she launched and scaled global education and sustainability initiatives, driving double-digit annual growth and expanding access to 21st-century careers for millions. Her career spans leading game-based learning companies, managing multi-million-dollar charitable funds, and pioneering scalable upskilling programs that blend gaming, learning, and social innovation.

Tammy Jensen the President of agriCAREERS gives some insight and tips for these recent graduates. She says currently the service sector in agriculture is in high demand for workers. SummaryIn this episode of the eCommerce Content Creation Podcast, Daniel reflects on his personal and professional challenges over the past year, including feelings of burnout and uncertainty in the creative industry. He discusses the impact of these experiences on his work and the podcast, expressing gratitude for the support he has received from friends and colleagues. The episode also covers recent industry news, including Creative Force's acquisition of SpinMe and H&M's new AI initiatives. In this conversation, Daniel explores the potential of 3D product rendering as a transformative tool in product imaging. Daniel also shares his personal job search journey and career aspirations, emphasizing the importance of community and support during transitions.Key Takeaways1. Burnout and Honest ReflectionDaniel opens up about severe burnout in 2024, especially in the latter half of the year. He describes it not just as being tired of work, but a profound experience of anxiety that affected his ability to do even basic tasks—like scheduling podcast guests. His honesty about this period is a core theme of the episode.2. Challenges of Freelance LifeAfter leaving Creative Force, Daniel attempted to build a freelance consulting and photography business, but struggled with the business side—timing, invoicing, lead generation, and sustainability. Despite having meaningful projects, the inconsistency of work and cash flow took a toll, both mentally and financially.3. Industry Uncertainty and Shifting CadenceHe reflects on how creative production has changed post-COVID, with traditional seasonal patterns and reliable busy periods now disrupted. Studios no longer have predictable workflows or planning cadences, making it harder for professionals to know when to expect work—or prepare for downturns.4. Gratitude for Supportive CommunityDaniel expresses deep appreciation for the friends, colleagues, and partners who supported him during this difficult time. He calls out people like Kowser Ahmed (The KOW Company), Ian Parkes (Stockpress), Bimi Ibok, and others who provided not only work opportunities but emotional support and career advice.5. Industry News – Creative Force Acquires SpinMeHe discusses Creative Force's acquisition of SpinMe after the latter entered administration. He speculates on what that might mean for SpinMe customers and offers his own services to help studios navigate that transition.6. Mixed Feelings About AI in Content CreationDaniel unpacks his reactions to the rise of AI in eCommerce photography—specifically the use of digital twins of real models (e.g., H&M's recent announcement). While he sees the potential value, he also voices concern about job loss for stylists, models, and creative professionals, and urges the industry to approach these changes thoughtfully.7. Continued Passion for 3D and Creative TechnologyDespite his challenges, Daniel remains excited about 3D product rendering. He sees it as a promising tool for sustainable, scalable eCommerce content creation—particularly because it allows studios to generate high-quality assets from existing imagery without physical reshoots or shipping products across the globe.CreditsHosted by: Daniel Jester - danieltjester.com

I know that I have helped thousands of people in some way to get out of the canyon called #Unemployment and back into the job world. I could've charged a lot of money to a lot of people over the years because my stuff works and it works fast if you are someone that goes and attacks challenges. I don't charge people a lot of money because they need their money to eat and pay their rent and provide for their family when they are unemployed because they don't know when that nightmare will end. That is why I don't make it a giant moneymaking endeavor. I do this from the heart because I never forget how bad it felt to be unemployed and how awful every day was until I knew what my next job was. That said, I cannot believe when someone is offered free help from someone who has been doing it for as long as I have that they would ignore my invite and not come to the event. All I will say is here is an invite to my next event and if you are a #jobseeker you should come because something I say will help you to get in next great opportunity. Recent surveys also indicated at least 64 percent of employees are also hoping for a pay rise this year. "You have to definitely have the full package in today's climate. You've got to have experience that is relevant for the job, you've got to articulate it really well, you have to demonstrate proactivity... all those people-skill elements." Listen now on Apple, Spotify, and YouTube.—Dale from the UK, currently based in Italy, is a UX Researcher with 4 years experience working in fields such as the Space, Sustainability and Marketing Industries, and currently hosting the UXR Minds Podcast. His mission is to help new and aspiring UX Researchers break into the field by sharing informative episodes on best practices and trends in the industry. In our conversation, we discuss:* Dale's experience of a six-month job hunt in the UX research field.* The emotional toll of rejections, ghosting, and lack of responses.* Strategies for staying proactive, including networking on LinkedIn and refining resumes.* The importance of maintaining personal growth and mental health during a job search.Dale hosts the amazing UXR Minds podcast, where he dedicates his time to guiding new user researchers or those interested in the field. Highly recommend listening! Some takeaways:* Dale's six-month job hunt highlights the challenges of breaking into or progressing in competitive fields like UX research. His experience shows that even with in-house and freelance work on your resume, securing interviews can be difficult due to market saturation and economic downturns. Regularly update your portfolio and resume to reflect your latest projects, and tailor each application to the specific role to stand out in a competitive market.* Dale discusses how rejection emails and ghosting from potential employers can take a mental toll. He tracks his job applications to better understand response rates and gauge where improvements might be needed. Start tracking your job applications in a spreadsheet. Log the role, company, application date, and any follow-up actions. This will help you identify patterns in your applications and fine-tune your approach* Rather than relying solely on job boards, Dale finds more success by being active on LinkedIn and reaching out directly to hiring managers or heads of UX. This has led to meaningful conversations, which can open doors even if they don't result in immediate offers. Spend at least 30 minutes each day engaging on LinkedIn—comment on relevant posts, connect with professionals in your field, and send personalized messages to hiring managers. When messaging, focus on building a relationship rather than directly asking for a job.* Job hunting can be all-consuming, but Dale advises setting boundaries to protect your personal life. He recommends allocating specific days or blocks of time for job search activities while using the rest of the time for family, hobbies, or volunteering. Schedule job search activities like a workday, with clear start and end times. For example, dedicate mornings to updating resumes and afternoons to networking, then disconnect for the evening. This structured approach prevents burnout and allows for mental recharging.* One of Dale's core messages is to stay true to yourself during interviews and networking efforts. He advises job seekers not to feel pressured to mold themselves into what they think a company wants but rather to embrace their strengths and unique qualities. Before interviews, create a personal narrative around your key strengths and how they align with the company's needs. Practice framing any weaknesses as opportunities for growth, and approach networking conversations with genuine curiosity rather than just seeking a job lead. This makes your interactions more authentic and impactful.Where to find Dale:* LinkedIn* UXR Minds podcast* WebsiteFor inquiries about sponsoring the podcast, email nikki@userresearchacademy.com This is a public episode. Hi folks,If you're a long-term listener, you know this show often takes long, multi-week breaks. This break has been much longer than normal, and will likely continue for a few months. What's going on?Right now, I have one goal on my mind: to find a new, permanent job.My three-year contract at Grand Valley State University will end in April. I knew this going in, and it's public information, so don't worry about any dirt being spilled. In the past three months I have applied for dozens of jobs, and that number will double before year's end. Each application takes time. I also have a full teaching schedule and I'm supervising undergraduate research. In short, there's simply no time to make the show right now.I don't know where I'll be in six months, and that's honestly a very stressful situation. But things are looking up- I've had a few interviews, and jobs are still being posted. When I find a permanent position, hopefully by early 2025, I will let you all know and finally return to Bedrock, both the show and in my own life. In the meantime, thank you as always for your patience and enthusiasm. If you've finished the show, you can recommend it to a science-curious friend. You can always drop a line at bedrock.mailbox@gmail.com, it always makes my day.See you next time, whenever that may be.
