FANTASTIC FOUR FIRST STEPS: A Glorious New Beginning or Another Failure?

Nerd Legion

Nerd Legion breaks down Fantastic Four First Steps, critiquing its flawed storyline, sometimes questionable CGI, and underwhelming writing. They discuss the film's failed promise and compare it to other Marvel and non-Marvel films, highlighting both the good and the not-so-good aspects. The film struggles to maintain the audience's suspension of disbelief and mostly squanders a strong start by the time the heroes visit Galactus in space. In spite of generally solid casting with Pedro Pascal and Vanessa Kirby in the lead roles, believable chemistry between the actors, and a compelling alternate Earth with a Mid-Century Modern aesthetic, the film ultimately is weighed down by poor writing.

Downtown Fargo is instantly recognizable thanks to the iconic marquee of the Fargo Theatre, which casts the word “FARGO” in glowing lights across Broadway each night. Less than a block away is another beloved landmark, the distinctive sign for the White Banner Uniform Shop. With its black-and-white, angular Mid-Century Modern flair, the sign has been a visual staple of Broadway since at least the 1950s, earning its place as perhaps the second most iconic sign in Fargo.

We're celebrating May, Historic Preservation Month, with an episode on the Modern houses of the 1950s and 1960s.    Could you live in a glass house? New Canaan, Connecticut's Mid-Century Modern homes designed after the Second War are world famous. In addition to Philip Johnson's Glass House, now a museum, New Canaan has homes designed by Marcel Breuer, Eliot Noyes, Frank Lloyd Wright and Edward Durell Stone. Each one is a part of architectural history and is a masterwork of the era's most talented architects. But by the 1990s, people began to demolish these relatively small homes sited on large lots. People in New Canaan  began to band together to save these artworks-”machines for living”.  Towns across Connecticut have at least one or two good Mid-Century Modern homes worth saving and celebrating.    Host Mary Donohue discusses what a homeowners and community members can do to help save these modern homes. Her guests are Gwen North Reiss, historian and author of New Canaan Modern: A Preservation History published by the New Canaan Museum and Historical Society in 2024 and Mary Dunne, Deputy State Historic Preservation Officer for the Dept of Economic and Community Development and homeowner of an architect-designed,  Mid-Century Modern home.     For more information on New Canaan's Modern houses, order your copy of Gwen North Reiss's book New Canaan Modern: A Preservation History from the New Canaan Historical Society. We're flying into Palm Springs airport today to visit our Gay Golden Girls, and triumphant return of the multicam with Mid Century Modern! It's got all the staples of a true classic Multicam sitcom: A theme song, firm scene breaks, a big dumb dumb and EXPOSITION BABYYYY! Not to mention an absolute rockstar production, writing, and acting team with the return of our champion Jimmy Burrows (Cheers, Mary Tyler Moore, Friends, Will & Grace, Taxi, Frasier and more) but also Max Mutchnik and David Kohan the creators of Will & Grace. The squad behind this is so talented we put Matt Bomer, Nathan Lee Graham and freaking NATHAN LANE after? Beautiful. After a challenge from guest host J. W.
