The Liberation of Syracuse and the Fall of Dion. Guest Author: Professor James Romm. Dion invaded Syracuse with a liberation force but faced internal chaos as populist passions erupted. He clashed with the radical democrat Heraclides, whom he eventually had assassinated. This political murder embarrassed Plato's Academy, as both Dion and his later assassin, Calippus, were students. Following the murder, Dion fell into a spiritual crisis and became ineffective. He was ultimately killed by a disaffected faction of his own army. His death left Syracuse in terminal decline, marked by food insecurity and the destruction of the once-powerful city-state. 5

The second season has reached its final boss C.G Jung and we realize that he must be undone. We walk you through the history of ideas of electricity and magnetism, how they became one thing and what role that thing played in giving life to the first modern sciences of the mind during the 1800s. And why by the end of that century neurology and psychology necessarily had to become racist sciences with the help of photography, as our Skull Boys replaced their craniometrics with pyschometrics. We then show a side to a very young Jung that you might never have heard about. Learning about how he came of age, we try to pinpoint when he turned to the dark side or if he was born that way. You have waited longer than usual but this episode hopefully have a little bit of everything you've desired and more.
Misha Glenny and guests discuss the group which came to be known as the Levellers and emerged during what would become arguably one of the bloodiest and most turbulent periods of English history. After the First English Civil War, the Levellers started calling for reforms to achieve legal and social equality. They pushed for a new constitution, extended franchise, popular sovereignty, and religious toleration. To do this, the Levellers pioneered the use of pamphlets and petitions, as well as taking to the streets in their thousands to demonstrate wearing their signature sea-green ribbons and sprigs of rosemary. To some they were radical, and to others not radical enough. Though the Leveller movement itself may have been short-lived, the arguments that they made have both inspired and challenged generations since.WithTeresa Bejan Professor of Political Theory and Fellow of Oriel College, University of OxfordTed Vallance Professor of History and Dean of Research and Doctoral Study at the University of RoehamptonAndClare Jackson Honorary Professor of Early Modern History and Walter Grant Scott Fellow in History at Trinity Hall, University of CambridgeProducer: Martha OwenReading list:Teresa M. What if the thing you love could help change someone's life?In this inspiring conversation, Tracy Daugherty sits down with Jenny Barber, co-founder of Talitha Coffee, to share how a simple passion—coffee—became a powerful tool for advocacy and restoration. What started as roasting beans at home has grown into a business creating meaningful employment for survivors of human trafficking.Jenny shares the deeper need many survivors face after leaving exploitation. The need for dignity, purpose, practical pathways forward, and how their work is helping bridge that gap through job training, community, and opportunity. But this story is about more than coffee. It's about what happens when someone chooses to offer what they already have.Whether it's baking, creating, organizing, or simply showing up consistently, this episode will challenge and encourage you to see your passions in a new light: not just a hobby, but an opportunity to make an impact.Shop Talitha Coffee: https://talitha.com/collections/retail------Want to learn more about Freedom Challenge? In this episode of Satisfied, Ryan Swanson continues the Twisted Passions series by turning from explanation to application. For those who have experienced same-sex attraction, the question is not only “How did I get here?” but “What do I do now?” Using Ecclesiastes 4 and the picture of the threefold cord, Ryan explains the biblical importance of mutual discipleship, accountability, and outflow. He challenges listeners not to fight alone, but to share what God has used in their lives to help others pursue purity and satisfaction in Christ. Listeners who have experienced same-sex attraction are invited to anonymously share a verse, biblical truth, testimony, or practical step that has helped them at https://theegeneration.org/ssa. Topics Discussed The loneliness often felt by those struggling with same-sex attraction Why Ecclesiastes 4 speaks directly to the danger of isolation The difference between one-way mentorship and mutual discipleship How the “threefold cord” illustrates shared strength and shared responsibility The importance of personal integrity in the battle for purity Why outflow is a necessary part of Christian growth A powerful testimony from a Christian school chapel where young men began helping one another pursue purity The invitation for listeners to anonymously share what God has used to help them How testimony, Scripture, and practical wisdom can strengthen others in their own fight Key Takeaways You are not meant to face temptation alone. Mutual discipleship is not one strong person pulling up the weak, but believers strengthening one another as they walk with God. God can use the very truths He has taught you in your struggle to help someone else find hope and victory. Outflow helps turn the focus away from self and toward serving others. Even an anonymous testimony can be a meaningful first step in helping someone else become less gratified and more satisfied with Jesus Christ. Victory over deceptive thoughts starts early, before consideration turns into acceptance. Ready to download the Cord App? Find it here! Is it realistic for a character to regress in a novel? Why might a character regress, and is it relatable for them to do that? In this episode of the Author Diary Entries podcast, your host and chick lit indie author Sagan Morrow analyzes character regression in contemporary romance novel Kiss Me — Book 8 in the Polyamorous Passions series. We do an analysis of the main character, Scarlett, and her character development (or regression!) throughout the series… especially since she is initially viewed through the eyes of OTHER characters (Emma, in Books 1 - 3, and Helen, in Books 4 - 6). If you've ever wondered what's going on when your favourite character seems to be regressing, this is a must-listen episode for exploring subtext. In this episode, we dive deeper into the topic of motivating our kids, especially when traditional schoolwork leads to resistance or meltdowns. Building on last week's discussion about motivation versus executive dysfunction, this week's episode explores the power of project-based and interest-led learning—especially for neurodivergent kids. From transforming a love of Minecraft or Pokémon into meaningful educational experiences, to finding the right balance between leveraging special interests and avoiding burnout, we unpack practical strategies to engage children in their education. Find out why interests are often the doorway to deep learning, discover the four-step project pathway framework, and gain confidence to embrace creative, child-focused educational approaches—while addressing common parental concerns about gaps, screens, and specialization. Whether you're homeschooling or simply looking to inspire lifelong learning in your child, this episode is packed with encouragement and actionable tips to help every learner thrive. Key Takeaways Harness Special Interests: Use your child's passions—like Minecraft, Pokémon, or theater—as the starting point for deeper learning and engagement. Build Sideways, Not Away: Expand on what excites your child by connecting related skills and subjects, rather than forcing a hard turn to traditional academics. Project Power: Anchor learning in real-life projects, from creating Minecraft cities to designing bug field guides, making skills and knowledge truly stick. Honor Depth and Autonomy: Let your child dive deep into what they love and give them a say in how they learn; this fosters motivation, connection, and persistence. Gaps Are OK: Every learning path has gaps—focus on teaching kids how to find answers, build confidence, and adapt to an ever-changing world. We got the OG three back for this one - Bob, Mike and Jeff break down all things Philadelphia sports once again. But this time, we hang out for a bit (hover over?) with the two teams that just got bounced from the second round.First up, the Sixers! It's become a yearly endeavor for local and national media to have their meltdown about this team. It's all over! No one can work with this team! Embiid should be banished from anything sports related! We cut through the hysteria and give a solid "state of the team" analysis. With the latest front office moves (later Morey), it remains to be see what the offseason will be for this squad. Lookin like we're running it back! That may either excite or upset you.NEXT - it was really the heroes of the current Philly sports fans PASSIONS. The Flyers seemed to rally the city, and got a bunch of folks back in to hockey. Listen, it's the fourth most popular team in town overall, but I think the fandom just expanded, and rightfully so. We take stock of the current state of the team (Young! Pretty good! Attractive destination for free agents!), and we look forward to a solid offseason....where my only requirement is for them to figure out how the hell to succeed on the power play. LITERALLY NOTHING ELSE TO DO.Email: hoagiemouthpod@gmail.comIG: @hoagiemouthpod
In this episode of Success if Subjective, Joanna sits down with Aideen Ni Riada, a vocal coach and creative mentor who helps people build confidence and reconnect with their authentic voice through singing and creativity. Aideen shares her nonlinear journey from growing up in Ireland and pursuing “safe” career paths, to experiencing burnout in London before eventually rebuilding her life around music, self-expression, and meaningful work. Together, they explore the pressure many young people feel to choose practical paths over creative passions, the importance of self-trust and experimentation, and how success often comes from allowing yourself to evolve. This episode is a reminder that fulfillment rarely follows a straight line — and that creativity can become a powerful path back to yourself.Aideen's Resources: Email: info@confidenceinsinging.comWebsite: Confidence in Singing Facebook Group: Confidence In Singing With AideenInstagram: @aideenniriadaConnect with Joanna Lilley Therapeutic Consulting AssociationLilley Consulting WebsiteLilley Consulting on Facebook Email: joanna@lilleyconsulting.com#TherapeuticConsulting #LilleyConsulting #Successful #TherapeuticPrograms #Therapy #MentalHealthMatters #MentalHealthAwareness #Podcast #PodcastCommunity #TheJourney #SuccessIsSubjectivePodcast #TheUnpavedRoad #PFCAudioVideo #ResonateWithAideen #YourVoiceMatters #SpeakYourTruth #VoiceCoach
In the fire's heat The log is transformed but does Not become the fire What if the goal isn't to destroy the fire within us, but to learn how to live with it? This episode explores passion, shame, anger, desire, transformation, and the difference between purification and integration. Not becoming less. Not cutting parts of ourselves away. But learning how to carry what burns inside us without letting it consume us. Drawing from Nietzsche, Will and Ariel Durant, personal experience, and poetry, this episode reflects on the possibility that our virtues may grow out of the very things we once feared in ourselves. I'd love to hear what you have to say about the episode including thoughts on the poetry and the topics that were discussed. You can email me at poetdelayed@gmail.com. Sheryl and Victoria unpack how children—and adults—can become pigeonholed as “the smart one,” “the athlete,” “the good girl,” or “the creative one,” and what happens when those identities start to feel limiting. Through personal stories about parenting, childhood passions, sibling dynamics, and evolving career paths, they reflect on the importance of allowing young people the freedom to grow, pivot, and surprise us. The conversation touches on intrinsic motivation, the difference between genuine passion and externally imposed expectations, and how gifts and talents can both ground us and become tangled with self-worth. Sheryl and Victoria also explore the tension between encouraging perseverance and honoring a child's authentic sense of self, sharing examples of how identity can unfold in unexpected ways. Along the way, they discuss multi-potentiality, growth mindset, perfectionism, gender expectations, and the deep human need to feel seen, valued, and free to contain multitudes. Join Michaela Nikolaenko and me as we discuss how our view on spiritual warfare has changed. Michaela and I have a similar path; we are both ex-occultists and ex-Protestants and now newly Orthodox Christians. During our journey into the Orthodox faith, we both fell victim to misconceptions about spiritual warfare. As occultists, we both encountered demons. Not realizing what they truly were yet, we were tricked into believing they were our spiritual "friends," trying to utilize them on our path to healing. Once Christ came into our lives, like many new Christians, we fell into not only Protestantism but also charismatic teaching. This experience gave us a whole other deceptive view on what we initially believed spiritual warfare was. By God's grace, we both came to understand that what we had been taught about demons and spiritual warfare was not the truth, and we entered the Orthodox Church—the true church. Once there, we realized the true nature of spiritual warfare and that picking up your cross and following Christ meant an ongoing battle, but not with the eternal demons like we once believed—it was warfare within. A lifelong battle not just with demons, but against our passions and sin.Watch Video on YoutubeIf you enjoy this episode there is also a bonus chat where Michaela and I dive deeper into the topics discussed in this episode. LeTara continues discussing episodes 931-935 of Passions with Maria and Shane! This week on the pod:
In this episode of Satisfied, Ryan Swanson steps back from the recent discussion on the eunuch principle to address the deeper question of why same-sex attraction can feel so real even when it does not reflect God's design. He encourages listeners who believe God may be calling them to unmarried service to walk carefully, avoid making the calling about self-affirmation, and focus instead on undistracted service to Christ. Ryan also exposes several ways the devil can twist curiosity, idle imagination, same-gender friendship, and emotional closeness into confusion about identity and desire. Topics Discussed How to respond if you believe God may be calling you to unmarried service Why it may not be wise to publicly announce or over-explain the eunuch principle too quickly The importance of serving Christ without needing everyone else to fully understand your calling How curiosity can become confused with attraction The danger of an idle mind in a culture saturated with sexuality Why young people need parental guidance, mentorship, and spiritual counsel The difference between same-gender closeness and same-sex attraction How deep emotional bonds can be misinterpreted as sexual desire The biblical example of David and Jonathan's deep, non-sexual friendship Why feelings must be tested by God's Word rather than accepted as identity Key Takeaways Feelings can seem powerful and real, but they are not always truthful. The Word of God, not personal desire or cultural pressure, must define a believer's identity and calling. A life of unmarried service is not about drawing attention to oneself. It is about being free to serve Christ with undistracted devotion. Curiosity, emotional closeness, and deep friendship are not the same thing as sexual attraction. The enemy can twist good and natural desires into confusion when they are not understood biblically. Young people should not be left to navigate sexuality and identity alone. Parents, pastors, and godly mentors have a responsibility to guide them with clarity, compassion, and truth. Victory begins by recognizing the lies of the devil and seeking the Lord for the identity He has chosen. True satisfaction is found not in being affirmed by others, but in being satisfied with Jesus Christ. Victory over deceptive thoughts starts early, before consideration turns into acceptance. LeTara discusses episodes 931-935 of Passions with Maria and Shane! This week on the pod:
We're living in a moment where everyone is "doing the work"—therapy, healing, boundaries, trauma language—and yet people seem more anxious, unstable, and internally fragmented than ever. In this episode, Fr. Turbo Qualls joins me to challenge the assumptions behind modern mental health culture and to ask a deeper question: are we misdiagnosing spiritual problems as psychological ones? We get into the difference between trauma and the passions, where therapy can be helpful—and where it quietly falls short—and how certain modern practices can drift into spiritually dangerous territory when they're detached from the life of the Church. We also discuss why the Orthodox tradition emphasizes repentance over self-focus, how confession differs from therapy, and what real healing actually looks like—not as self-optimization, but as transformation. If you've ever felt like you're doing everything right but still feel stuck, this conversation goes beneath the surface. OINTMENT is a conference and movement centered on healing the soul through the life of the Church. At a time when "healing" is often reduced to self-focus and psychological frameworks, OINTMENT aims to reorient people toward repentance, ascetic struggle, and communion with God as the true path to restoration. The conference brings together Orthodox clergy, teachers, and speakers to address topics like spiritual illness, the passions, modern therapy culture, and what it means to actually be healed—not just feel better. It's designed for people who sense that something is missing in the modern conversation around mental health and are looking for something deeper, more grounded, and ultimately more transformative. We kick off with a the Dodgers spanking the Blue Jays and torn allegiances in Brian's house, then dive into Europe taking dead aim at your kids' screen time. Ireland is rolling out a Government Digital Wallet that'll verify ages before young'uns can doom-scroll their lives away, while Greece went fully scorched-earth and announced a ban on all under-15s using social media at all — announced, naturally, on TikTok.IN THE NEWS, the AI giants (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google) are playing nicely together for once, teaming up through the Frontier Model Forum to stop Chinese firms from essentially photocopying their models on the cheap — billions in revenue, national security, and the small matter of safety guardrails stripped out. Turnabout is fair play? On the legal gambling front, prediction markets scored a federal win as a US appeals court ruled New Jersey can't regulate Kalshi; the Trump family's fingerprints are all over the prediction market space (surprise!), and the data suggests 0.04% of accounts are hoovering up 70% of profits like it's a perfectly healthy ecosystem. Also: the FBI pulled deleted Signal messages out of iPhone notification caches, GoPro is laying off 23% of its workforce while somehow remaining optimistic, and OpenAI is backing an Illinois bill that would shield AI companies from liability even in mass-casualty scenarios... cool. On the plus side, Artemis II astronauts took amazing photos of the Moon... on their iPhones. In APPS & DOODADS: Mercedes recalled its electric G-Wagons because the wheels might literally fall off, Amazon is sunsetting Kindles from 2012 and earlier for no reason anyone can figure out, and Apple Fitness on Apple TV is randomly scrambling workout stacks with no fix in sight — a premium locked ecosystem doing premium locked ecosystem things. In MEDIA CANDY, the crew is watching The Pitt, The Boys, Shrinking, and Daredevil, and you'll want to sit down for this: Mel Brooks and Rick Moranis are back — Spaceballs 2 hits theaters a full year from now even though it's done. Italy slapped Netflix with a court-ordered refund for price hikes going back to 2017, while Netflix simultaneously raised prices for US subscribers and launched Playground, a free kids gaming app that works offline (Peppa Pig and Sesame Street, no ads, no in-app purchases — hook 'em on Dah Dum young!)AT THE LIBRARY, Brian has given up on Breath and Jason reads Four Thousand Weeks and Art Spiegelman's Maus — the Pulitzer-winning Holocaust masterpiece that some people are still trying to ban, because humanity never fully learns.Closing out with THE DARK SIDE WITH DAVE, Treasury Secretary Bessent and Fed Chair Powell apparently called an emergency meeting with bank CEOs over Anthropic's new model "Mythos," which can apparently find and exploit vulnerabilities across major OSes and browsers. The boys also catch up on Maul: Shadow Lord, the Strong Songs podcast's Joni Mitchell deep-dive ("Passions soften into wisdom" — weeping on the plane, apparently), the belated discovery that Marathon launched and nobody noticed, and some genuine moon joy courtesy of NASA's Artemis II astronauts.Sponsors:DeleteMe - Get 20% off your DeleteMe plan when you go to JoinDeleteMe.com/GOG and use promo code GOG at checkout.CleanMyMac - Get Tidy Today!
