The man Jack appears in a number of English folk tales. Often depicted as a lazy man or boy, Jack overcomes challenges and wins with trickery and cleverness. Of all the many stories featuring a variant of Jack, one is certainly the most famous: the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. Throughout the stories of Europe are tales of the dead returning to wretched life to haunt the living. Some wish to drink our blood, others to torment us for perceived wrongs. In the summer of 1518, the town of Strasbourg faced a strange malady. The infection spread rapidly, caused a great deal of stress and pain, and then just as suddenly vanished.
