An exploration of folk lore, supernatural tradition, and the weird and wild throughout history.
The man Jack appears in a number of English folk tales. Often depicted as a lazy man or boy, Jack overcomes challenges and wins with trickery and cleverness. Of all the many stories featuring a variant of Jack, one is certainly the most famous: the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. Originating some 5000 years ago, and first published in written-form in the 1700s, Jack and the Beanstalk is a story with many versions and deep roots. Throughout the stories of Europe are tales of the dead returning to wretched life to haunt the living. Some wish to drink our blood, others to torment us for perceived wrongs. Others return with strange purpose and stranger abilities. These revenants can curse the living, spread disease, and some can even shape-shift. These creatures cannot be destroyed by blade or bow. Revenants demand specific rites and rituals which can prevent them from rising again, and only then can their curses be broken. Written and Narrated by Andrew Eagle Music: Foggy Night by Greg Ralls
In the summer of 1518, the town of Strasbourg faced a strange malady. The infection spread rapidly, caused a great deal of stress and pain, and then just as suddenly vanished. Those infected found themselves unable to stop themselves from dancing. They danced and danced, until they collapsed from heat and exhaustion. Over the course of its month-long reign, the dancing plague infected hundreds and, according to some reports, killed dozens. Out of 300 years of witch-hunts and trials in England, one fourteen month period saw more than half of the executions for witchcraft in the nation's history. This violent time occurred at the hands of a self-righteous man of East Anglia. Under the guidance of Matthew Hopkins, at least 300 accused witches were executed for supposed crimes. He was the authority on witchcraft in the region, and had a taste for cruelty. His self-appointed title: Witchfinder General.
