My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Max Shippee, author of the book Moonshine: Path of the Raven. Max grew up in rural Maine and knows the woods well. His own journey took him to Hollywood, California by way of Oklahoma, Nevada, Texas, DC, and even Bali, Indonesia. For the last 20 years, he has been busy as an actor, a gym owner, a husband, and a father. Along the way, he's had some stories brewing in that silver-haired head of his. He thought he best write them down. You can find his spontaneous science-fiction installments on Reddit, and now, MOONSHINE: THE SERIES has begun with Book One: Path of the Raven.   In my book review, I stated Moonshine: Path of the Raven is a wonderful young adult fiction novel full of magical realism. I'm going to be honest - I rarely read werewolf books because I find them to be too fantastical for my liking. However, this novel kept me captivated from the beginning. I immediately fell in love with Sam, the young boy on the brink of manhood, and his protector, John. Plus, the extended cast of characters is just as enchanting!   Sam starts out life as a sharecropper in the early 1900s. His family still works on the plantation that used to hold them as slaves. Although poor, Sam believes his life is good. However, everything changes the day the young plantation daughter notices Sam working. Although his life was destined to change anyway as the next Jack for a coven in upstate New York, Sam soon finds himself without a family or a place to call home. Fortunately for Sam, he soon learns that he doesn't have to journey through life alone.   I love that many of the characters we meet are incarnations of legendary figures - King Author, John Henry, and more! We got a couple of world-class curmudgeons here - who share more than might meet the ear initially: two native Californians renown for their curdled opinion of the world they inhabit, and the populace with whom they share the space; We're talking Hollywood, specifically, but their bile was generous enough to accommodate the whole of humanity - in all its corrupt, hypocritical manifestations; both lost too early - victims of cancer's cruelty; both musical geniuses with solid classical training and rock n roll credentials; and, funny? It should be noted that Frank was inducted posthumously into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame; Warren is still owed his due. FRANK ZAPPAThe man loved freaks, and had to create his own label to promote them. From the time he appeared on the Steve Allen show in the early 60's, playing the bicycle, to the early 90's, when he visited Czech Republic as an honored guest to the President, playwright-turned politician, Vaclav Havel after their Velvet Revolution, and throughout his vociferous fight against censorship in the halls of our Congress, Frank always stood strong for freedom of expression, and against hypocrisy.In “Plastic People” from his second album ABSOLUTELY FREE, you can hear so many elements mixed together that have become tropes: the abrupt changes in tempo and mood, the stinging social satire, the weird orchestration, the rock n roll name checks…. The Grinders are back. WOOH! And we are ready to celebrate, brother. What ya gonna do when RPGrindermania runs wild on you?! The same ol' Grinders but now with more headbutts, low blows, and eye pokes than any Face could handle. WOOH! With skill and mastery of the top rope, Eric is able to dominate the spoiler free review of the Fantastic 4: First Steps. Meanwhile, Frank used his signature Sharpshooter to make the Dog Soldiers tap-out. In the squared circle, no werewolves are a match for professional wrasslers. Werewolves can't SMEEEEEELLLLL what Frank is cooking.  The next match for the Grinders is against their greatest rival, the Stinkoes. It's a heated rivalry. Every fight ends in injuries or worse. Some former Grinders have never been heard from since. With the death of a music legend, the loss of an entire television network, and the funding cuts to the REAL news media, the Stinkoes are looking increasingly unbeatable. But if the Grinders want to be the man, they will have to beat the man. The Stinkoes are the man. The Stinkoes are tough, but the Grinders have their own tag partners to help them even the score.
