Amidst the reports of drone incursions over military bases and northern New Jersey, there was a story that made the news involving video footage reportedly taken by a co-pilot of an unidentified object in the sky above Manchester Airport in England, along with still shots of what was said to be the same object, seen to be a blue sphere, hovering over the tarmac. As is typical of UFO coverage in the news these days, when it's not about what government officials think about the phenomenon, the origin of the story was a post on social media with no real names provided for the poster or the source. All that was left for those with an interest in the case was to conduct some rather imaginative analysis of the footage and argue back and forth over the possible alien origin of the object. Listen now on Apple, Spotify, and YouTube.Petra Kubalcik is an accomplished user research professional with over two decades of international experience. Originating from Australia, she has honed her research skills across Japan, Hong Kong, the UK, Czech Republic, and most recently, Germany. Petra has led research teams at Dyson, Cookpad and currently serves as Head of User Research at Omio. She is a champion of user-centricity, ensuring that user perspectives remain central to strategy, innovation and development. Petra has personally conducted research in over 40 countries, bringing a global perspective to her work. Outside of her professional endeavors, she is dedicated to volunteering, sailing, woodworking and supporting the Wallabies. In our conversation, we discuss:* Why continuous discovery is often misunderstood and how separating continuous from discovery can clarify your goals.* What makes a strong foundation for setting up a continuous discovery program, including the importance of stakeholder goals and UX maturity.* How to design effective cadences and role-sharing models depending on whether you're doing discovery or continuous touchpoints.* The artifacts and outputs that make these programs sustainable and useful, from pathway playbooks to Miro boards.* Red flags that indicate you shouldn't implement continuous discovery and what to do instead. Some takeaways:* Continuous discovery is not always discovery. Petra emphasizes that many stakeholders use the term continuous discovery when they really mean frequent customer touchpoints. Researchers need to clarify whether the goal is to explore new insights (discovery) or simply maintain regular user input and adjust the program accordingly.* Start with a crystal-clear ‘why.' Without a well-defined reason for starting continuous discovery, the effort can quickly become unsustainable or directionless. Petra urges researchers to treat these programs like any other research project: define the objective, understand stakeholder needs, and forecast what success looks like. Your “why” will be your compass when things get difficult.* Programs must match UX maturity and resources. Continuous discovery isn't right for every organization. Petra warns against starting these programs in low-maturity teams with limited resources, unclear goals, or minimal stakeholder buy-in. If you're fighting at every step, you risk burnout and low-impact work.* Cadence and involvement should flex by context. A one-size-fits-all cadence doesn't work. For light-touch programs with PMs or designers leading sessions, weekly or biweekly cadences might work. For true discovery efforts, a slower pace is essential to allow for iteration, depth, and evolution in the research plan.* Build reusable frameworks and artifacts to lighten the load. To scale continuous discovery, Petra recommends investing in repeatable templates such as objective-setting docs, note-taking guides, playbooks, and pre-aligned outputs. For example, a “pathway playbook” outlines flows users will walk through and provides a structured format for collecting and analyzing data. These tools ensure quality while keeping researchers sane.Where to find Petra:* LinkedInInterested in sponsoring the podcast?Interested in sponsoring or advertising on this podcast? Members of the new age Anastasia movement espouse strong family values, farm small plots of land and try to educate their own children outside the public school system. Originating in Russia, the quasi-religious group has now spread to Germany, where there are more than a dozen ‘Anastasia' rural settlements. But are they more than just a harmless fringe group? Reporter Johannes Dell goes back to his native Germany to discover what the group stands for. He speaks to a former Anastasia member and to a German journalist who spent two years tracking the group. A government intelligence officer tells him why three German states have designated the group as extremist.
May is Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, dedicated to celebrating the achievements and contributions of Asians, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders of the United States. Originating after U.S. Congress action in 1997, this commemoration serves to highlight the vastness of the Asian, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities, which spans more than 30 countries where over 100 different languages are spoken, and where the experiences are equally as varied. During the month of May and integrated into the curriculum throughout the school year, we celebrate our AANHPI community intentionally and honor their gifts, cultures, diverse histories, and continued contributions to the Hillsboro School District and our nation. In our schools and classrooms, we take time to explore the rich history and culture of people who are AANHPI. We continue to teach, learn and unlearn, reflect on and even condemn the violence and hatred that has been directed at the AANHPI community. We work to rebuild our classroom communities as we elevate the stories, contributions, and experiences of the AANHPI communities with love, empathy, and inclusivity. Thank you to our Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Hillsboro School District students, staff, families, and community members who continue to join us in the efforts to build and sustain a culture of belonging. We admire you and we're incredibly thankful for your talents, advocacy, and brilliance. Our featured students are members of Hilhi's first-ever Rocket League Esports Club! Rocket League is an online sport-based video game in which teams compete against others all across the U.S. for points and prizes. On Saturday, April 12, they competed in the Bruin Rocket League Invitational hosted at George Fox University. The tournament featured four top teams: Ridgefield, North Eugene, Wilsonville, and our very own Spartans. With Wilsonville and Hilhi widely regarded as the two best teams in the state, the stage was set for an intense showdown. The competition began with a group stage (best-of-three format), where the Spartans earned the #2 seed heading into bracket play, dropping only one match in a close 1-2 loss to Wilsonville. In bracket play, the Spartans came out strong, cruising through the semifinals to earn a highly anticipated rematch with Wilsonville in the finals. This time, Hilhi came prepared. The Spartans set the tone early, winning the first match—and they never looked back. With dominant teamwork, sharp communication, and clutch plays, Hilhi swept Wilsonville 4-0 in a best-of-seven series to claim the championship title. This win solidifies that the Hillsboro Spartans are officially the #1 High School Rocket League team in the state. Congratulations and way to go, Spartan Esports team! For millennia, chili peppers have been at the heart of the Americas - long before Columbus set sail, before the Aztecs built their empire, and before the Incas wove them into myth. Originating in what is now Peru and Bolivia, these fiery pods were among the first crops cultivated by humans, shaping the diets, medicine, and rituals of entire civilizations. From the wild “tolerated weeds” of early foragers to the carefully cultivated varieties prized by the Maya and Aztecs, chiles were far more than a seasoning - they were power, tribute, and even punishment. In Incan lore, Brother Chile Pepper was woven into creation myths, while Aztec markets overflowed with dozens of varieties, traded and taxed like gold. When Columbus finally arrived in the Caribbean, he wasn't discovering chiles - he was stumbling upon a centuries-old tradition that had already conquered the New World.Join John and Patrick as they trace the ancient roots of the chile pepper, exploring its sacred role in pre-Columbian societies, its legendary place in Aztec and Incan mythology, and the fateful moment it first crossed the Atlantic. But this is just the beginning - because once Columbus carried chiles back to Spain, their journey was only getting started.----------In Sponsorship with Cornell University: Dyson Cornell SC Johnson College of Business-----------Join the History of Fresh Produce Club for ad-free listening, bonus episodes, book discounts and access to an exclusive chatroom community.Support us!Share this episode with your friendsGive a 5-star ratingWrite a review -----------Subscribe to our biweekly newsletter here for extra stories related to recent episodes, book recommendations, a sneak peek of upcoming episodes and more.-----------Instagram, TikTok, Threads:@historyoffreshproduceEmail: historyoffreshproduce@gmail.com

Episode 117Does the universe have a beginning? If so, does it require a cause? In this episode, we explore the Kalam Cosmological Argument, a powerful philosophical and theological case for the existence of God. Originating in Islamic philosophy and championed in modern times by thinkers like William Lane Craig, this argument follows a simple yet profound structure: (1) Whatever begins to exist has a cause, (2) The universe began to exist, (3) Therefore, the universe has a cause. We'll break down each premise, discuss objections from skeptics, and examine how contemporary science—like Big Bang cosmology and thermodynamics—intersects with this ancient argument. Whether you're a believer, skeptic, or just curious, this episode will challenge your thinking on the origins of everything.Find our videocast here: https://youtu.be/4olNCURgX94Music from #Uppbeat (free for Creators!):https://uppbeat.io/t/reakt-music/deep-stoneLicense code: 2QZOZ2YHZ5UTE7C8Find more Take 2 Theology content at https://take2pod.wordpress.com/
