This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom – Theology Thursday – Arianism: The Heresy That Shook an Empire and Hastened Rome's Fall Wisdom-Trek Podcast Script - Day 2791 Welcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps!   I am Guthrie Chamberlain, and we are on Day 2791 of our Trek.   The Purpose of Wisdom-Trek is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, and to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Our current series of Theology Thursday lessons is written by theologian and teacher John Daniels. I have found that his lessons are short, easy to understand, doctrinally sound, and applicable to all who desire to learn more of God's Word. John's lessons can be found on his website   theologyinfive.com.   Today's lesson is titled  Arianism: The Heresy That Shook an Empire and Hastened Rome's Fall. Arianism was more than a theological dispute; it became a force that rattled the foundations of the Roman Empire. Originating with the Alexandrian priest Arius (AD 250–336), the doctrine asserted that the Son, Jesus Christ, was a created being and therefore not co-eternal with the Father. This challenged the traditional Christian understanding of Jesus' divinity and ignited a controversy that tore through the Church and empire alike. By the time of Constantine in the early 4th century, Christianity had been legalized and heavily promoted, though not yet made the official religion of Rome. Constantine's patronage brought Christianity into the center of imperial life, and his calling of the Council of Nicaea in 325 demonstrated just how closely church and empire were becoming linked. Yet the settlement of Nicaea did not resolve the issue. The Arian controversy lingered, splitting bishops, congregations, and emperors. What began as a debate over the Trinity soon spiraled into a crisis that divided the empire at its core. As Arianism spread, particularly among the Germanic tribes who would later overrun the Western Empire, the theological rift turned into a political fault line. In this way, a doctrinal battle over Christ's divinity became bound up with the very fate of Rome itself. The first segment is: Why Arianism Was Declared a Heresy The Church declared Arianism a heresy at the First Council of Nicaea in AD 325. The fundamental issue revolved around the nature and divinity of Jesus Christ. While Arius believed Jesus was a creation—albeit the highest of all creations—the Church upheld that Jesus was uncreated, co-eternal, and co-equal with the Father. Scripture played a decisive role in the dispute. John 1:1 states, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” This verse affirms the divinity of Jesus, describing Him as the Word who both existed at the beginning and was God Himself. Colossians 1:16 likewise insists on Christ's active role in creation: “For by him [Jesus] all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.” Such passages undermine the Arian claim that Jesus Himself was a creation. The second segment is: Arianism and the Fall of Rome...

I want to acknowledge that not all individuals are well-acquainted with Amish culture in America. While some may recognize that an alternative way of life exists, they may lack comprehensive Knowledge regarding its characteristics and practices.Recently, I encountered a comment referring to the Amish as "backward" individuals who continue to use horses and buggies. This statement prompted me to inform those who may be uninformed about their traditions and way of life. For me, the Amish culture in America is a journey of faith, tradition, and resilience.The Amish story in the United States is one of remarkable faith and cultural preservation. Originating from the Anabaptist movement in 16th-century Europe, they faced severe persecution for beliefs like adult baptism and pacifism. In search of religious freedom, they bravely migrated to North America in the early 18th century, with many settling in Pennsylvania under William Penn's promise of tolerance.The heart of the Amish-American settlement is in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, where fertile land allowed the communities to thrive. As land became scarce, they moved westward into Ohio, Indiana, and beyond. Those states are still highly populated today. In addition, new pockets are emerging in Wisconsin, Missouri, and parts of New York and Kentucky. Their numbers are climbing because they have high birth rates and manage to keep their young people involved in their culture. As families seek affordable farmland, this growth has led to new settlements. According to recent statistics, 350,000 people are considered to have an Amish background in the nation, and possibly more.These communities are characterized by rural landscapes featuring open fields and horse-drawn buggies. Known for their skilled farming, they steadfastly maintain a simple lifestyle, consciously resisting modern technology—a practice called Gelassenheit (yielding to God's will). Although most do not use electricity, some communities adopt limited modern conveniences, constantly weighing them against their deeply held values.Nonetheless, the community faces several significant challenges, including escalating land prices, the impact of tourism on their traditional way of life, and ongoing debates related to education, as Amish children typically receive formal education only until the eighth grade. Despite these challenges, the Amish demonstrate resilience by adapting to changing circumstances while remaining committed to their cultural identity.Visiting Amish country provides valuable insights into an alternative lifestyle that strongly emphasizes faith, family, and community. The Amish's sustained presence in America is a testament to their dedication to a more straightforward, more intentional way of life, one that's difficult to emulate.During a recent three-day visit to the territory, the first thing that struck me was the silence. There was no hum of electricity or blaring screens—just the rhythmic clip-clop of horse-drawn buggies and the rustle of wind through cornfields. More info can be found, here.  Kitaoka Fumio (1918-2007) - was a painter who moved onto mokuhanga later in life. Kitaoka was a sōsaku hanga printmaker whose works touched on anti-war themes and Japanese society, emigres and the working class.  Tsukiji Fish Market (1988)  Tadashige Ono (1909-1990) - was a socially conscience printmaker of Post-War Japan. Tadashige's early works were influenced by the west with German Expressionism and later in his career, as his personal politics began to change, Tadashige;'s prints began to focus on an industrial Japan.  House (Hiroshima) (1957) Tōkō Shinoda (1913-2021) - was a calligrapher and painter in Japan. Shinoda saw herself as an artist who combined painting and calligraphy together defying categorization. More information can be found, here from The Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto.  Sound (ca 1990) lithograph on paper 17 5/8" h x 23 3/8" w Clifton Karhu (1927-2007) -  was a mokuhanga printmaker based in Japan. Karhu lived in Japan for most of his life after studying with Tetsuo Yamada and Stanton Macdonald-Wright. HIs themes were of his home city of Kyoto, Japan. More information can be found, here.  Black Robe (1976)  shin hanga - is a style of Japanese woodblock printmaking that emerged in the early 20th century, marking the end of the nishiki-e period. Originating around 1915 under the direction of Watanabe Shōzaburō (1885-1962), the art form responded to the foreign demand for "traditional" Japanese imagery. Shin hanga artists focused on motifs like castles, bridges, famous landscapes, and bamboo forests. The style was initiated when Watanabe discovered Austrian artist Fritz Capelari (1884-1950) and commissioned him to design prints for Watanabe's budding printing house. This collaboration led to the evolution of shin hanga into a distinctive new style of Japanese woodblock printing. The shin hanga movement thrived until its inevitable decline after the Second World War (1939-1945). Shōzaburō Watanabe (1885-1962) - was one of the most important print publishers in Japan in the early 20th Century. His business acumen and desire to preserve the ukiyo-e tradition were incredibly influential for the artists and collectors in Japan and those around the world. Watanabe influenced other publishers, but his work in the genre is unparalleled. The shin-hanga (new print) movement is Watanabe's, collecting some of the best printers, carvers and designers to work for him. A great article by The Japan Times in 2022 discusses a touring exhibition of Watanabe's work called Shin Hanga: New Prints of Japan, which can be found here.  Kawamura Sayaka - is a mokuhanga printmaker based in Japan. Her work has an ethereal quality of mystery and fantasy. More information can be found on her Instagram.  Bon Voyage IV (2019) 27.56 " × 27.56 " AP - stands for Artist's Proof. When a printmaker is almost ready to print an edition, they will create a few prints that serve as proofs of the final image before the edition is printed. Gotō Hidehiko (b.1953) - is a mokuhanga printmaker and tool maker based in Japan. He makes and teaches seminars about the construction of the mokuhanga tool, the baren.  Sound Of The Waves (2016) 15" × 12" Zōjōji Daimon - is a Buddhist temple in Minato, Tokyo of the Jōdo-shū (Pure Land) sect of Buddhism David Rockefeller (1915-2017) - was an American economist and investment banker who led Chase Manhattan Corporation as its chairman and CEO. From 2004 until his passing in 2017, he was the oldest living member of the Rockefeller family. The youngest of five sons, he was the child of John D. Rockefeller Jr. and Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, and the grandson of John D. Rockefeller and Laura Spelman Rockefeller.  Hasegawa Yuichi (1945-2025) - was a woodblock printmaker from Aizu in Fukushima Prefecture. He was from a family of lacquerware makers. Hasegawa incorporated lacquer resin and metallic paints into his reduction woodblocks, giving them a distinctive texture and gleam. Deeply influenced by Zen and the natural world, he aimed to capture the power and splendor of nature in his prints.  Night Sky No. 5 (2000) Seiko Kawachi - is a mokuhanga printmaker and painter based in Japan. His work is known for its rich use of color and dynamic energy. A longtime printmaking instructor at Tama Art University, he experienced a turning point in his middle age when he began exploring the influence of Hokusai. Using contemporary materials, his large, powerful prints capture the movement and vitality of the natural world. Object: The Flying: Ki (The Flying: Introduction) (1985) mokuhanga and intaglio, 65" × 36" Tama Art University - located in Tokyo, Japan, is one of the country's leading institutions for art and design education. Founded in 1935, it offers programs in fine arts, design, architecture, and media arts, fostering both traditional and contemporary approaches to creativity. Known for its strong emphasis on experimentation and individual expression, Tama has produced many influential artists, designers, and educators who have shaped Japan's modern art scene. Since the days of the Vikings and Arthurian legend, these sprites have undergone huge transformations. From J. R. R. Tolkien's warlike elves, based on medieval legend, to little flower fairies whose charms even Sir Arthur Conan Doyle succumbed to, they permeate European art and culture. In Elves and Fairies: A Short History of the Otherworld (Yale University Press, 2025), Dr. Matthias Egeler explores these mythical creatures of Iceland, Ireland, Scotland, and England, and their continental European cousins. Dr. Egeler goes on a journey through enchanted landscapes and literary worlds. He describes both their friendly and their dangerous, even deadly, sides. We encounter them in the legends of King Arthur's round table and in Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, in the terrible era of the witch trials, in magic's peaceful conquest of Victorian bourgeois salons, in the child-friendly form of Peter Pan, and even as helpers in the contemporary fight against environmental destruction.
