This week, Chris' fears come to life before his very eyes, Matt makes an impression on some dangerous dudes, somebody's ending makes them a little sick to their stomach, and Krampus drops in to celebrate his most special day!
Susan Murphy is dragged by her anthropologist parents to the Arctic so they can study the Eskimo tribe who introduced the world to Gamera. Susan is angry she will miss her last two years of high school while her younger twin siblings, Shawn and Sharon, love that they live closer to the North Pole and Santa Claus. But Susan won't have any of this “baby stuff” and berates the twins, who run away. Susan is forced by her father to search for them, and she wrecks her snowmobile in a blizzard. When she awakes, she finds herself in the North Pole, which has the twins, Elves, a talking polar bear, and, yes, Santa Claus. If that wasn't enough, she and her siblings get caught up with an invasion by Santa's evil brother, Krampus, who commands an army of Goblins and a kaiju reindeer. Gamera intervenes, but he's left-for-dead by the monstrous reindeer. Now, Susan and her new friends race against time to revive the Friend to All Children with Santa's magic Wreath crown. But is the teenage girl's faith strong enough to save the mighty turtle? Also features sound effects by My Soothing White Noise. Have you seen the “Grinch prank” video trend? Bad parenting, yes. But also a nod to the conflicts, ancient and modern, embedded in Christmas. Contrary to what Bill O'Reilly would tell you, there has never been a “war on Christmas.” Rather, Christmas itself has always been a battleground over love, dignity, and resources. What we're really fighting over is who gets care in systems built on scarcity and extraction. Throughout history, Krampus has been seen as the dark and sinister counterpart to old Saint Nicholas. This horned, hoofed, half-human, half-goat creature is known for taking charge of the naughty list and punishing those that don't behave. But is Krampus one of a kind? For years, legends of a similar Goatman have popped up all over the world, from South America to New Zealand, leading many to wonder—does this Christmas legend have roots in the supernatural… And might he exist after all? On this special Christmas holiday episode of the podcast, Chauncey DeVega reflects on this very surreal and challenging year and tries to find some mirth, merriment, positive energy and joy to refill his (and our) hope tanks. Chauncey taps into the joy of childhood nostalgia and a longing for a simpler time as he looks through store catalogues from the 1980s in search of his favorite Transformers and G.I. Joe toys, and then calculates how much they would cost in today's dollars. Chauncey soon realizes he likely would have been the parent telling the kids, "Hell no!" Disney, the WWE, and other entertainment companies have announced that they will be using AI programs to "assist" in their creative process. In the spirit of embracing the future, Chauncey DeVega asks an AI to write a Christmas-themed crossover mega-event movie featuring Star Wars, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, James Gunn's version of Superman, Santa Claus, Frosty the Snowman, and Krampus. The results are "troubling" for what they suggest about the present and future of mass media in the 21st century and beyond. This year's Christmas and holiday season are a painful reminder that the collapse of American democracy in the Age of Trump is also an extreme moral crisis, touching almost every aspect of American society and life. To that point, Chauncey shares a recent news story about how ICE has enlisted "Santa Claus" — equipped with a red bulletproof vest and handcuffs — to assist in its mass deportation campaign. Why do we say Merry Christmas instead of Happy Christmas? The phrase has a surprisingly rich past, shaped by culture, language, and holiday tradition. This episode begins with where “merry” came from and why it stuck. https://time.com/6240140/why-we-say-merry-christmas-traditions/ Being alone isn't the same as being lonely. In fact, choosing solitude can offer profound psychological and emotional benefits. Robert J. Coplan joins me to explain why. He has spent more than three decades studying the upside of time alone. Robert is a psychologist, researcher, teacher, and author of The Joy of Solitude: How to Reconnect with Yourself in an Overconnected World. (https://amzn.to/3KX25NE) Christmas traditions evolve far more than we realize — from how we celebrate to who we imagine Santa to be. The Santa Claus of today looks very different from his earlier counterparts, and the holiday itself has gone through dramatic shifts over time. Joe Biel, founder and CEO of Microcosm Publishing and author of A People's Guide to Santa Claus: The Secret History of Christmas, from Saint Nick to Krampus and Yule (https://amzn.to/48MTN2J) joins me to explore these surprising transformations. Owning a pet can actually make you more attractive — and not just because pets are cute. Research shows people form quick judgments about how you treat your dog or cat, and that can sway romantic interest. George Noory and author Lionel Fanthorpe share Christmas stories like sailors on a sinking ship calling for Saint Nicholas to save them, the scary Krampus creature who punishes bad children, and the origins of the Christmas trees and Christmas cards.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Forget cozy Coca-Cola Santas, this is the original dark side of Christmas. In this episode, we dive into the terrifying folklore of Krampus, the horned Christmas demon of the Alps who beats bad children with birch rods, stuffs them in sacks, and drags them off into the winter night. We trace his roots back to the brutal midwinter Rauhnächte, the terrifying goddess Perchta and her Perchten, and the way the Church shackled these pagan spirits to Saint Nicholas to create the ultimate good cop / bad cop duo.hauntedamericanhistory.comPatreon- https://www.patreon.com/hauntedamericanhistoryLINKS FOR MY DEBUT NOVEL, THE FORGOTTEN BOROUGHBarnes and Noble - https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-forgotten-borough-christopher-feinstein/1148274794?ean=9798319693334AMAZON: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FQPQD68SEbookGOOGLE: https://play.google.com/store/books/details?id=S5WCEQAAQBAJ&pli=1KOBO: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the-forgotten-borough-2?sId=a10cf8af-5fbd-475e-97c4-76966ec87994&ssId=DX3jihH_5_2bUeP1xoje_SMASHWORD: https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/1853316 !! This episode is Part 1 of Christmases of Port Charles Past, covering 1963–2018, and highlights the holiday moments that shaped General Hospital Christmases across decades. Rather than a full recap, we focus on the traditions that became the heart of the show — especially the General Hospital pediatric Christmas celebration and the beloved ritual of Dr. Steve Hardy reading the Christmas story, which returns year after year as a symbol of stability and community. We also revisit classic Quartermaine Christmases, complete with the iconic tree and electric train, where family warmth and tension often went hand in hand.Along the way, we call out specific nostalgic milestones fans will recognize instantly: Luke and Laura's Christmas moments, from exchanging gifts by the tree to Luke returning in time to place the angel atop the Spencer family tree; the Gift of the Magi–style Christmas with Grant and Celia; BJ's handmade card and Frisco doting on Robin; and the unforgettable Christmas tree lot episode where Sonny unexpectedly saves Christmas Eve. We also note a fun Port Charles pattern — how often Christmas comes with an engagement ring.As the years move closer to the modern era, we tease later standouts without giving everything away, including Liz's music-themed gift to Lucky, David Koz performing during hospital Christmas episodes, Luke's Christmas Carol–inspired “Scrooge” episode, and the year Krampus replaced the traditional Christmas story. Part 1 wraps in 2018, setting the stage for Part 2, which will continue the timeline from 2019–2024.This podcast is not endorsed by, directly affiliated with, maintained, authorized, or sponsored by ABC Television Network, Prospect Studios, or any official General Hospital organizations. I love a good Christmas story. The kind where something strange and wonderful happens out in the wilderness. Where the magic of the season reaches places most people never go. Where even the darkest corners of the forest feel touched by something warm and old and meaningful.Over the years, I've told you stories like that.Stories of Sasquatch sightings on snowy December mornings.Of mysterious gifts left on remote cabin doorsteps.Of unexplained tracks leading to and from places where no tracks should exist at all.But tonight, friends, I'm not here to warm your heart.Tonight, I'm here to freeze your blood.South Carolina. 1985.A young insurance adjuster named Gerald Hutchins inherits a remote cabin deep in the forest from his great-uncle Amos. The old man had lived alone out there for more than twenty years, and the family whispered that he came back from the war… changed. Haunted. Given to muttering in languages no one recognized. Drawing strange symbols he would immediately burn in the fireplace.Gerald decides the cabin would be the perfect place to spend Christmas with his wife, Ellen, and their thirteen-year-old son, Marcus.A real holiday, he tells them. The kind they used to have before television and convenience took over. Just a family, a fire, and the quiet peace of the winter woods. What Gerald doesn't tell them is what he found when he first visited the cabin alone. The chains hanging above the fireplace. The birch switches stained dark with something he didn't want to examine too closely. And the mask. A horrible wooden mask with hollow eyes and a grin carved with far too many teeth. He doesn't tell them about the sound he heard coming from the second floor. The sound of hooves on hardwood. As Christmas Eve settles in, the temperature drops and the snow begins to fall. And the Hutchins family will learn that some traditions are older than Christianity. Some punishments are older than coal in a stocking. And some things that were meant to stay in the old country followed our ancestors across the ocean—hiding in the shadows of their ships, waiting patiently for the right moment to remind us that the old ways never truly died. They just learned how to wait.Long before Santa Claus became the jolly gift-giver we know today, the winter solstice was a time of fear as much as celebration in the Alpine regions of Europe. While Saint Nicholas rewarded good children, his dark companion dealt with the rest.Krampus. Half-goat. Half-demon. All nightmare. A creature with curved horns, a serpentine tongue, chains forged in hellfire, and birch switches for the wicked. A basket on its back to carry its prizes away—down to whatever hell it called home.Krampusnacht, celebrated on December fifth, saw young men dress as the creature and roam the streets, terrorizing towns. But the oldest stories—the ones whispered long before costumes—spoke of something far older than men in masks. A being that existed before Christianity tried to tame it. A being that still walks the winter forests when nights grow long and the barriers between worlds wear thin.A being that always comes back.Content Warning:This episode contains intense horror imagery, supernatural violence, and themes involving harm to a family, including a child. Listener discretion is strongly advised. This one is not for the faint of heart—and absolutely not for little ones. I've spent a long time telling stories about strange things in the woods. Bigfoot encounters. Unexplained phenomena. Creatures that linger just beyond the firelight. Even the scariest of those stories often carry a strange warmth—a sense that whatever's out there might be mysterious, might be frightening, but isn't necessarily evil. This story is different. This story is about something very evil.Something that has been doing terrible things to humanity for a very long time.Something that doesn't care about your Christmas spirit, your good intentions, or your prayers.I wanted to tell this story because I think we've sanitized our holidays. We've forgotten that our ancestors celebrated the winter solstice not just with feasts and gifts—but with rituals meant to protect them from the darkness. They understood something we've chosen to forget. The longest night of the year is the longest for a reason. So as you listen, maybe keep a candle burning.Maybe check the locks on your doors. And if you hear something on the roof that sounds a little too heavy to be reindeer…Well. You know what to do.Until next time…Sweet dreams. And Merry Christmas.

Santa's on notice as Connery and Cowboy argue Krampus deserves the gig. A priceless crown gets wrecked in China (Cowboy has a very “non-scientific” explanation), AI sex bots are apparently outpacing humans in the kink department, and radioactive shrimp are back to haunt America. Plus: cancer-curing frog guts, the Bears flirting with Indiana, the Chiefs are headed to Kansas, Marvel resurrecting Captain America (again), and heartfelt—or unhinged—letters to Santa. It is that time of the year again, mainly that of the winter solstice, ghost riders, the wild hunt, Krampus, Belsnickel, Befana, Joulupukki, and, of course, Santa and baby Jesus. Few have probably ever considered how much like Halloween the Christmas season really is: from ghosts and monsters to the contractual obligations set forward in both the trick-or-treat agreement and the Santa “clause,” otherwise known as the naughty-or-nice list. The lights, ornaments, gifts, botanicals, and evergreen vegetation serve many roles in decorating for the holiday, or holy day, season. From real characters to mythological monsters; from folklore to modern religious celebrations; and from natural cyclical changes to interpretations of nature as the end-times apocalypse, it is certainly beginning to look a lot like Krampus. *The is the FREE archive, which includes advertisements. Long before Santa slid down chimneys, other figures roamed the winter nights — and they weren't bringing presents. They were bringing punishment.IN THIS EPISODE: ‘Tis the season for not only reindeer, grinches and magical snowmen but also fearless children, negligent parents and dumb thieves. “Home Alone” may be the first Christmas movie that comes to mind upon hearing that description, but it turns out there's a long and storied tradition of true stories of children left alone around the holidays matching wits against would-be robbers. (Home Alone) *** What would you think if you received a Christmas card in the mail that had a picture of a dead bird on the cover? Not very festive, is it? But that's not what people believed in the past. For a while, a dead bird was synonymous with saying “Merry Christmas!” (Merry Christmas, Here's a Dead Bird) *** A woman leaves her family to go Christmas shopping at the last minute… and disappears forever. (Mom Vanishes While Christmas Shopping) *** Christmas fun isn't all about Santa, his reindeer, and a magical snowman come to life thanks to a hat. There are some downright terrifying yuletide monsters that might make you want to stay behind locked doors this year. Happy Holidays & Merry Christmas! We kick off this festive episode by debuting our Christmas sweaters and battling some technical difficulties with a new microphone that may or may not sound like a tin can... you let us know. We discuss the overwhelming stress of the season, the joy of receiving fancy hot chocolate from London, and why Erin refuses to drink eggnog. What even is it? We also get a major update on Dan, who has taken his obsession to a new level by building a luxury habitat for a toad living in the garage, complete with a moss dome, a pool, and a working miniature lamp post.We then transition into a "Holiday Survival Guide," offering our best tips for enduring awkward parties, which mostly involves "dissociating," holding a phone as a shield, and finding an extrovert to cling to. We debate whether "The Grinch" is a name, a job title, or an ethnicity, and vent our frustrations about Apple TV holding A Charlie Brown Christmas hostage. Finally, we react to the terrifying Austrian tradition of Krampus runs (where people get whipped by demons), listen to a spam voicemail live on the air, and discuss the statistic that 1 in 4 Americans plan their entire Christmas Day around watching sports.
Well. It is here! The 2025 Christmas Spectacular has arrived and it is jam packed with Christmas cheer. First, Scott, Mike, Harry, and Dom take a trip down memory lane and receive gifts from the 1984 Sear's Christmas catalog. Then, a true Christmas miracle occurs. The guys participate in a game entitled "The Santa Clause 4" where they must compete to see who is the next Santa. You won't believe who joined the show to judge the answers. The big man from the North Pole himself, the one and only, Santa Claus! Listen as the guys compete and help raise money for charity. A must listen for the holiday season. For more info on the best Santa around, make sure to visit www.SantaPeteNj.com Our Christmas episodes wouldn't be complete without a unique Christmas guest. This year, we are joined by a man who has spent a lifetime excavating the bone-chilling folklore of the Alps and the arcane traditions of the past. Every year, goblin-like creatures called Kallikantzaroi stop sawing through the World Tree, crawl up from the underworld, and spend the twelve days of Christmas stealing babies, destroying homes, and terrorizing anyone unlucky enough to cross their path, pooping all over the place while they are at it.IN THIS EPISODE: If your kids think Elf on a Shelf is creepy – just tell them that kids in Greece and its surrounding countries are terrorized each Christmas for a full twelve days by nocturnal goblins that like to defecate all over your home! (The Defecating Christmas Goblins of Greece) *** The ghost of Mary, Queen of Scots makes her presence known on Christmas Eve, 1900… or does she? (The Tower of London's Christmas Eve Ghost) *** A serving of poisoned Christmas pie causes the death of Captain David Paye on Christmas day, 1882. But who had a motive? (A Christmas Poisoning) *** People worldwide have been celebrating Christmas for hundreds and hundreds of years – but not all of those years were joyous for everyone. For example, those who happened to be black living in America while slavery was still legal. What was Christmas like for them? (Christmas As a Slave In America) *** In that song, “It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” there is the line “there will be scary ghost stories”… why on earth would a Christmas song have a line like that? We'll look at that song – and other Christmas songs – that are a lot darker than you might know. (The Darker Side of Christmas Carols) *** We're all familiar with the classic Christmas ghost tale, “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens – but before that novel, there was another ghost story of Christmas, a purportedly true story. (A Ghost Story of Christmas) *** In 1897, Dr. Philip O'Hanlon was asked by his young daughter whether Santa Claus was real. His suggestion for her to find an answer has resulted in something so famous, it has practically become a meme. (Yes, Virginia, There Is a Santa Claus) *** December 16, 1965… Gemini 6 and 7 have just completed the first ever manned rendezvous between spacecraft, making history. But they were about to achieve another first in space exploration… and a first for Christmas! Originally posted in Dec. 2022, lets dive back into Krampus. Without much effort, the layers of the Christian holiday of Christmas can be peeled away to reveal its origins in more ancient pagan traditions from across Europe. One of the ancient folkloric characters that has managed to survive by tooth and claw is Krampus. Lets talk about Krampus, the Christmas demon.
On the morning of St. Nicholas Day, good kids rush downstairs to see what kind of gifts might be in their shoes. The bad kids? Unfortunately they might get a visit from Krampus, an ancient monster that has naughty children praying for a lump of coal instead. The origins of this half-goat, half-man folklore character date back centuries, largely to German-speaking countries in Europe. But these days, Krampus is more popular than ever — especially in America, with parades, festivals, Hollywood horror films, Ocean Spray commercials and endless amounts of merchandise. That popularity is largely attributed to Chicagoan Monte Beauchamp, who first published images of Krampus in his alternative comic magazine, Blab!, in 2000. “I can't believe what's taken place since I introduced Krampus in the pages of Blab! Magazine, which led to a book, and then from there it just exploded,” Beauchamp told Curious City. In our last episode, we looked at a long-running holiday tradition in Chicago, Goodman Theatre's rendition of “A Christmas Carol.” In today's episode, we explore the origins of this very different kind of Christmas tradition and its curious local connection.
