**This episode contains some descriptions of torture and executions**If you lived in Scotland in the 1500s, it was highly likely that you, or someone you knew, would be tried as a witch. Witch hunts and executions ripped through the country for over 150 years, with at least 4,000 accused, including men. Professor Suzannah Lipscomb explores this dark chapter in Scottish history with campaigners Claire Mitchell and Zoe Venditozzi, founders of the Witches of Scotland. Together they discuss the societal and legal conditions that allowed for accusations and executions, culminating in a formal apology in 2022 from then First Minister Nicholas Sturgeon.Presented by Professor Suzannah Lipscomb. On this week's episode of Three Ravens we're off to the land of the Dark Peak and the White, exploring to history and folklore of Derbyshire! We start off by chatting through traditions associated with Easter Monday festivities, and the live of St Anselm, who we conclude ought to be the Patron Saint of Jerks, all before we depart for Derbyshire in England's East Midlands. With Martin having absolutely rinsed the county's history last year, we dig into some strange and unexplored corners, including the 18th century Derbyshire mill owner assassinated by the King of Sardinia, the county's mysterious second sunset, the Ashbourne Road Shoe Tree, Crich Tramway Village, and more - all before Eleanor discusses the history of the Bakewell Pudding, the Bakewell Tart, and Derbyshire's 'Bride's Pie' for this week's County Dish. After that, we're deep into folklore, and discuss hardy perennials of Derbyshire legend, including the Little Red Hairy Man, Old Tup, a rather amazing shapeshifting, werewolf witch who almost gobbled the heir to the English throne, and so much more - not least some pretty freaky ghost stories - all enhanced by some excerpts from Saturday's upcoming Local Legends interview with beloved folk musician, storyteller, and editor of Fact and Fiction magazine, Pete Castle. Then it's on to the main event: Eleanor's telling of "Crooker" - a perhaps lesser known legends of a rather hungry and not very pleasant water demon said to live in the River Derwent...We really hope you enjoy the episode, and will be back on Thursday with a new Magus bonus episode about Giordano Bruno, and our Patreon Exclusive Film Club episode about 1968's The Witchfinder General, all before the full interview with Pete comes out on Saturday! The Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcast Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. There are a couple of anomalies. Fireblood feature twice due to the band releasing 2 EP's in a year and Atomic Hand is actually a two band project Iglesia Atomica and Out Of Hand. Wake Wood (2009), The Wind (2018), Apostle (2018) Folk horror has its roots in tales of witches and paganism, stretching back centuries. In cinema, the term "folk horror" was first coined by Rod Cooper in Kine Weekly to describe the 1971 classic Blood on Satan's Claw. However, the themes that define folk horror—witchcraft, ancient rituals, and the eerie power of nature—have been present since the earliest days of film. A prime example is Benjamin Christensen's Häxan (1922), which delves into witchcraft and age-old rites. Regardless of its origins or definitions, folk horror has endured over time, weaving its way through the history of cinema. In recent decades, the genre has experienced a remarkable resurgence, not just in the United States but globally. This renewed interest may owe much to Kier-La Janisse's expansive 2021 documentary, Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched, which shone a spotlight on the subgenre and sparked widespread conversation. With the recent release of Volume Two of Severin's All the Haunts Be Ours box sets, now seems the perfect time to explore some of the standout modern folk horror films from the past two decades. So, venture with us into the remote villages, pagan rites, and shadowy woods where all the horrors sit waiting for you in the dark corners where people rarely go.  Films mentioned in this episode: Abigail (2024), Alucarda (1977), Apostle (2018), Birth/Re-birth (2023), Blood on Satan's Claw (1971), Cuckoo (2024), Dracula (2006), Five Nights at Freddy's (2023), Flesh and the Fiends (1960), Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024), Isolation (2005), Pet Sematary (1989), Rosemary's Baby (1968), Underworld (2003), Wake Wood (2009), The Wicker Man (1973), The Wind (2018), Witchfinder General (1968), Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched (2021), Zombie (1979)

October has arrived and as we are wont to do here at The Politics of Cinema, we are diving into an approiate theme within the horror genre to celebrate. In the past we've looked at; Fascism in Green Room (2015), Humans Hunting Humans, Art House Horror, and the career of George Romero. This year we are heading into the thick of the woods to explore Folk Horror.  We discuss a few classics of the genre, such as Witchfinder General (1968), The Blood on Satan's Claw (1971), The Wicker Man (1973), and Ganja & Hess (1973). We also connect the themes in those early films to those explored in modern folk horror like The Witch (2015), It Follows (2014), Hereditary (2018), and Midsommar (2019)—before Isaac reins us in so we don't include every single horror film in this genre. Our main focus is also on one classic and one modern example: Penda's Fen (1974) and La Llorona (2019). These two striking examples of folk horror delve into the complexities of identity, history, and the landscapes that shape us. In Penda's Fen, we find a pagan anarchist manifesto within a coming-of-age story set in rural 1970s England. With La Llorona, we see how the ghosts of the past exact revenge on the Guatemalan General who orchestrated an Indigenous genocide. Both films yield surprisingly upbeat results within their narratives—at least to us. If folk horror piques your interest, we would also highly recommend watching Keir-La Janisse's documentary, Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror (2021). With Halloween only 21 days away, folk horror blogger Rowan Lee joins us to discuss a pair of offbeat Brit horror movies with totally loaded casts. First, Peter Cushing discovers that the humanoid fossil he discovered in New Guinea transforms into the slimy embodiment of pure evil when you just add water in THE CREEPING FLESH (1973). In a film with f--d-up family dynamics, Cushing almost immediately injects cells from his creepy skeleton's newly formed flesh into his young daughter (Lorna Heilbron) in a hair-brained attempt to inoculate her against evil. Christopher Lee is Cushing's hyper-competitive half-brother who mismanages a mental hospital and decides that stealing the fossil during a rainstorm is a great idea. What could go wrong? Directed by Hammer veteran Freddie Francis (DRACULA HAS RISEN FROM THE GRAVE), who went on to late-career success as the director of photography of three David Lynch movies (ELEPHANT MAN, DUNE, THE STRAIGHT STORY) and Scorsese's remake of CAPE FEAR. Next, Christopher Lee teams up with the great Boris Karloff and 60s scream queen Barbara Steele in THE CRIMSON CULT aka CURSE OF THE CRIMSON ALTAR (1968). This one starts off with a bang with psychedelic sex parties and pagan sacrifices, so as Greg suggests, get high quick because the movie soon gives way too much screen time to Mark Eden as a dense antiques dealer looking for his brother where everyone is losing their minds (and articles of clothing) over anniversary of the burning of the witch Lavinia (Steele). I mean, um, Christopher Lee is right there! Also starring Michael Gough who played Alfred in the Tim Burton BATMAN movies. Both of our films today are from Tigon British Film Releasing Productions, the studio that released two folk horror classics: THE WITCHFINDER GENERAL (1968) and THE BLOOD ON SATAN'S CLAW (1971) along with some sex comedies. The 17th century has rarely been as popular with film and TV dramatists as 'sexier' periods such as the Tudors, the Romans and the Second World War. But recently, 17th-century stories and characters have emerged from the shadows. Dramas such as Mary & George and Shogun - and the docudrama series Royal Kill List -  have attracted large audiences and plenty of media coverage, good and bad. Miranda and Paul use this 17th-century moment to take an irreverent trawl through past screen attempts to capture the period. Highs have included the movies Cromwell (1970) and Witchfinder General (1968), while 2019's Fanny Lye Deliver'd and Winstanley (1975), about the leader of the Diggers, get a thumbs-down. The jury is split on controversial Oscar-winner The Favourite (2018), as well as many of the TV dramas inspired by 17th-century events. Ultimately, Paul and Miranda agree that the finest dramatic depiction of the period came not on screen but on stage, in a play about the final days of King Charles I.  '1666 and All That' is presented by Paul Lay and Miranda Malins. The producer is Hugh Costello. Original music is by George Taylor. The episode is mixed by Sam Gunn.

Witchfinder General, Salem, Malleus Maleficarum. The world of witch-hunts and witch trials sounds archaic and fanciful, these terms relics of an unenlightened, brutal age. However, we often hear ‘witch-hunt' in today's media, and the misogyny that shaped witch trials is all too familiar. Three women were prosecuted under a version of the 1735 Witchcraft Act as recently as 2018. In Witchcraft: A History in Thirteen Trials (Simon & Schuster, 2023), Professor Marion Gibson uses thirteen significant trials to tell the global history of witchcraft and witch-hunts. As well as exploring the origins of witch-hunts through some of the most famous trials from the Middle Ages to the eighteenth century, it takes us in new and surprising directions. It shows us how witchcraft was reimagined by lawyers and radical historians in France, how suspicions of sorcery led to murder in Jazz Age Pennsylvania, the effects of colonialism and Christian missionary zeal on ‘witches' in Africa, and how even today a witch trial can come in many guises. Professor Gibson also tells the stories of the ‘witches' – mostly women like Helena Scheuberin, Anny Sampson and Joan Wright, whose stories have too often been overshadowed by those of the powerful men, such as King James I and ‘Witchfinder General' Matthew Hopkins, who hounded them. Once a tool invented by demonologists to hurt and silence their enemies, witch trials have been twisted and transformed over the course of history and the lines between witch and witch-hunter blurred. For the fortunate, a witch-hunt is just a metaphor, but, as this book makes clear, witches are truly still on trial. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose doctoral work focused on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. In 2015, I suffered from poor Type 1 diabetes control which lead me to become legally blind for almost a year. The doctors didn't give me much hope, predicting an 80% chance that I would never see again. But I refused to give up and changed my lifestyle drastically. Through sheer willpower (and an amazing eye surgeon) I beat the odds and regained my vision. During that difficult time, I couldn't read or write, which was devastating as they had always been a source of comfort for me since childhood. However, my wife took me to the local library where she read out the titles of audiobooks to me. I selected some of my favorite books, such as the Disc World series, Name of the Wind, Harry Potter, and more, and the audiobooks brought these stories to life in a way I had never experienced before. They helped me through the darkest period of my life and I fell in love with audiobooks. Once I regained my vision, I decided to pursue a career as an audiobook narrator instead of a writer. That's why I created Tall Tale TV, to support aspiring authors in the writing communities that I had grown to love before my ordeal. My goal was to help them promote their work by providing a promotional audio short story that showcases their writing skills to readers. They say the strongest form of advertising is word of mouth, so I offer a platform for readers to share these videos and help spread the word about these talented writers. We're taking a brief intermission from our Shyamalamarama series to bring you a handful of discussions on the subgenre known as "folk horror", which we've lovingly titled #whatthefolk. We start with the 1968 film WITCHFINDER GENERAL, starring Vincent Price as the historical figure Matthew Hopkins, who executed more than 300 people for the crime of witchcraft in just under 3 years. We're joined by author and scholar Leland Merritt, whose work on folk horror and its relationship to the Hebrew Bible provides some incredible insights to both the genre and the more challenging narratives we find in the scriptures.**A special note of consideration** Although the film exercises restraint in its visual representation, it does contain instances and discussions of sexual assault. Our conversation addresses these as well as similar instances in Biblical texts and we want to give awareness for sensitive listeners. We have a very thoughtful and insightful conversation that we hope you'll hear and enjoy as always, although discretion is advised.3:36 - Business TimePatron Only Segment: Whatcha Watchin' / Readin' / Listenin' To?5:11 - Getting to know special guest, Leland Merritt15:30 - Getting to know the Folk Horror Subgenre33:55 - WITCHFINDER GENERALSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
