Like I could try to retell the entire Roscoff history or write something silly. And so I looked at a map—my eyes immediately darted east to Jersey (the British Crown Dependency Island off the coast of NW France). I salivated over the easy writing assignment of taking shots at something with "Jersey" in its title. Because of course Jersey, we talked about Jersey in the White Castle episode (NEW Jersey). North Atlantic (USA) mockery of New Jersey is low-hanging fruit and I enjoy an easy time tapping out a banal missive. So I searched online like: "hey, did anything strange happen on that island called Jersey?"—OMGWTFNVM—Let's talk Roscoff—There's a famous French onion, Oignon de Roscoff—an onion that purportedly arrived to the region by way of a traveling Capuchin monk named Brother Cyril. He was returning from Lisbon and probably had the seed in his pocket—I'm positive monks had pockets in 1647.Ok, I looked it up, there is evidence of a handmade fanny pack 6000 years ago—being worn by some prehistoric guy named “The Iceman.” (To be a known person of history that lived over half a decamillennium ago and still get the moniker “The Iceman...” So cool. You know some men and women live forever in infamy—this pre-Austrian gentleman had a fanny pack and is known as “The Iceman.”)Pouches started being woven into clothing more recently (within a few centuries) because fanny packs were noticeable targets for thieves. I'm imagining Peaky Blinders versus the ****** Iceman. The Iceman had a bone awl in his fanny pack—think of an icepick carved from animal bone. “You want my dried tinder fungus you weird (but stylish) hat mother*******?! Talk to bone awl!!!” Ba-BLOWAnd voilà, Brother Cyril could have had a pocket with an onion seed ultimately leading to the culinarily significant Oignon de Roscoff.  (Maybe he had a suitcase... When were suitcases invented?)And that is where I will stop trying to parse agricultural history—I am unequipped for onion significances. I did find a blog of a lady who shouts “bonjour” at Roscoff residents to get candid photos (and has an Oignon de Roscoff recipe that looks delicious) — she speaks highly of Roscoff onions. My best onion take is that red onions are vastly overrated. Like you're not getting points with me because you're usually in every hoagie I love and you're the sexiest element in an Olive Garden salad.

"The Origin of the Spider-Friends" tries to answer these questions, although after watching this episode, we really don't know why Peter Parker is friends with these two. Bobby and Angelica relentlessly bully Peter at school, although it's not entirely clear if they even know they're doing that. Also, Tony Stark is in this episode, because he turns out to be the reason the Spider-Friends have that super-computer. This episode's plot doesn't make very much sense, but we all found it to be a delight to watch... that's classic Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends! The boys ponder the uncertain future of DC's most beloved golf course before debating the value of a good ball fitting. Believe science. The science of the X-Men, that is! Zach Fernebok (aka Professor Z) returns to the show to talk about the science of the X-Men. Both the science itself, and the 2000 book by Link Yaco and Karen Haber. Before we do that, Zach and Frank do some CorreXions from our previous episode to clarify a few points that our audience brought to our attention. After that, we talk about all sorts of X-Men: Jean Grey, Iceman, Kitty Pryde, and Rogue. What would it take for their powers to be possible in our world? There's only one way to find out. Brandon Quittem walked through an essay he has never published, and Brady said so up front. The idea: Bitcoin resembles the Apache, who held off three empires for centuries because there was no leader to remove. He opened with the disclaimer, and it matters: "analogy, analogy, analogy. It's not one to one. These are just frameworks." ⭐ The mechanism he laid out: a centralized organization has a choke point, so Cortés could take an empire by capturing one man. The Apache had no such point, so killing a leader just produced two bands instead of one. ⭐⭐ What finally worked was a gift, not a fight. The US gave Apache leaders 100 head of cattle. A people who had never stored wealth formed a council to divide it, and the wealth eroded them from inside. His one-line version of the lesson: "you cannot fight decentralized organizations face-on. You have to subvert them from the inside, through values, through corruption, or by applying leverage on leaders." ⭐ He called it the golden cow, and named the Bitcoin version carefully: early holders get wealthy, stop fighting, and the supply drifts into a few custodial products. Then he hedged: he is not claiming we are there. Brady asked whether the cattle were a knowing move by the US government or an accident that happened to work. Brandon treated it as an open historical question rather than asserting intent. Brady's larger question ran under the whole hour: does culture even matter to Bitcoin? Brandon traced the waves, cypherpunks first, then libertarians and sound-money people, then the writers, and argued each cohort changed what the network was defended for. A listener's take on custody was the practical takeaway: custodians have gotten much better, and the thing to protect is not a purity test but the standing ability to exit to self-custody quickly if you ever need to. ⭐⭐ Then the fungi, and the origin story, told here for the first time. He wrote part one of the mycelium essay in one night after a meetup. Dan Held edited it and gave him confidence to publish in 2018. He was gun-shy because the genre didn't exist yet: "in 2018 there wasn't a lot of esoteric Bitcoin-is-a-living-organism talk." Held's own four-part series had compared Bitcoin to a tree and Satoshi to a gardener. ⭐ The biology, in his words: mycelium is the organism and the mushroom is just the reproductive organ. The network has no brain, runs underground or inside trees, and moves information in both directions across long distances and across species. Brady brought the pop-culture version: Star Trek Discovery built a spore drive on an intergalactic mycelial network, with an astromycologist character named Lieutenant Paul Stamets after the real mycologist Brandon cites. Brandon on why fungal medicine works on humans: the biology is close enough that a molecule a fungus builds to fight bacteria often works in us. His estimate is that over half of modern pharmacology is fungal or fungi-derived. The detail that got the room: Ötzi the Iceman, the frozen body found in the Italian Alps with an arrow in his back, was carrying several kinds of mushrooms when he died. His stated principle for the whole project: a "polymathic responsibility" to combine what you know from elsewhere to explain a genuinely new thing. For as long as people have been wearing clothes, they have been wearing garments under them – Romans at Hadrian's Wall were sent underpants, and even Ötzi the Iceman was discovered wearing a form of undergarment. But what were people wearing before the invention of underwires and elastic, so essential to our modern conceptions of underwear? This episode traces the history of our underthings in western Europe and the USA from the medieval period, through the Tudor, Regency and Victorian eras, and into the modern day. Moving around the body, it takes in the linen shifts and shirts that were the universal undergarment for much of history, the development of drawers and stockings, and the shockingly recent invention of knickers and briefs. His act was a little unusual. As the Iceman, he went on stage… to melt ice. Literally. In 2010, when Robert Wringham wrote his book about this era of comedy, the Iceman could not be found. But a couple of years later, Anthony Irvine popped up again. This time as a visual artist called aim. What was going on? How much permanence and success can we assure for this man whose entire act was about impermanence and failure? The blocks live on! If there's one thing we know about Dracula, it's that he's supposed to be sexy. Not so much on Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends, where the "Bride of Dracula" episode makes the famous vampire decidedly unappealing. Firestar gets kidnapped to be his bride and is therefore out of commission for almost this entire episode, much to our chagrin. Meanwhile, Spider-Man and Iceman spend the whole episode ragging on each other and competing over Firestar in the process of trying to rescue her, which isn't that fun to watch either. We do make it fun to recap, though, and we also manage to make several references to Castlevania and Ryan's self-insert fanfiction about his vampire OC Fearix Wolfgang. Max Holloway hasn't received much attention, it's been all on Conor leading up to this week.
