He's collaborated with award-winning Swedish game studio Simogo on games including Year Walk, Device 6, and last year's Lorelei and the Laser Eyes. We discuss engaging players outside of the game, the thin line between the player and the character, and pizza on a farm. I would recommend podcasters to rob banks instead because gambling is immoral. Welcome back to the podcast and to our very important series on games titled after women's names that begin with the letter L. Today, we're talking about Lorelei and the Laser Eyes a puzzle game from Simogo, developer of games like Year Walk and Sayonara Wild Hearts. Taking the form of an enormous escape room, where solving number puzzles and unlocking doors is the name of the game, you progress through an ever growing list of goals to uncover the “truth” as it is quantified in the menu. The game has a few consistent motifs that pop up to anchor you into the narratives main themes and provide clues to the puzzles, and combined with a story that has real concrete answers you can figure out yourself with the information provided, it really meshes a mechanical satisfaction with a narrative one. In the same vein, the difficulty of the puzzles really lands in a spot that will likely be satisfying for most people, if a bit easy for people who are diehard fans of the genre. Mostly more simple than you would think at first glance, recognizing patterns and identifying a pool of answers to choose from will serve you better than raw enigmatology in this case. The game isn't perfect, a bit too long, and if you're not a fan of puzzle games generally this likely won't change your mind, but it's a stylish package put together by a developer that really knows how to nail a tone. We're going to be talking about the interconnectivity of puzzles, the stylish execution of a visual style and we determine that person we often most agree with is ourselves. Thank you for joining us again this week! Not know what this game was going into it may have not been the best idea from a scheduling perspective, and maybe had something to do with us thinking it was bit overlong, but in the end it was still a good time. Do you think our devotion to Simogo's games is unhealthy? Do you just agree and enjoy their output? Let us know in the comments or over on our Discord! Next time, we're actually interrupting the GTAWNTBWTLL theme as we enter October and will be talking about Crow Country, so we hope you'll stay tuned for that.
This week on The Free Cheese, thank you Player570. You have earned 100 points. We revisit a game we both left unfinished and follow up last year's addition of Year Walk to The List. This time, we're spinning our mobile devices in circles and listening closely to the sounds between the lines in Device 6.
Philip Lufolk is a blacksmith in Storvik, Sweden inspired by the archeology & mythology of Scandinavia. We begin on the role of the Viking blacksmith & how bog iron was processed. Philip describes objects & jewelry that he forges based on historical artifacts: the seeress' völva staff; a charm known as a Thor's hammer; a landowner's Viking key; and oath rings inscribed with law. We switch to mythology with the tale of Mjölnir [Thor's hammer] & the rest of the gods' treasures, fashioned by the industrious & highly-skilled dwarves. Then there's the vengeful blacksmith, Völund. We discuss burial mounds & rock art: picture stones, rune stones & a petroglyph just outside of Oslo's city center. Approaching the end Philip tells an archaic divination technique called Årsgång or "The Year Walk." Follow Lufolk on Instagram and check out his wares at Lufolk.com. Finally, we try to guess a game on The List based on a series of brand new trophies created for it.

Artist Jake Tilson doesn't care if his projects take decades to complete - in fact, he likes it when they do. He's just finished recreating his vision of Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo, an art project which took him years and involved walking around the market for thousands of miles. His recent solo show, which included miniature recreations of some of Tsukiji's 1,700 fish stalls, was a triumph of imagination, technical skill and eccentricity. The work is also a ghostly tribute to a market which no longer exists. In this episode Jake explains why walking and typography are so crucial to his work - and how to make a typeface out of eels. GET READY!

This week we finally bend down to the will of large corporations and play a game recommended by none other than Mama Steam, Year Walk. An interactive art/game experience exploring Swedish folklore. We also talk about how people who play Quidditch in real life still can't fly on brooms and disgruntled Naughty Dog employees. Enjoy! ----- Would you believe it? We've elevated our Instagram to something we actually use!!! Check it out for updates on our latest podcast and some silly screenshots (maybe sorta sometimes at least). We might even use it for other purposes too. How cool is that? If you have a question or just want to talk some smack about how poorly we did this week you can hit us up on our email: tyrannyofthumbs@gmail.com Also, I'm contractually obligated to mention we "technically" have a Twitter... But we don't use it... yet! Oh! And IF YOU LIKED THE SHOW BUT UNDER NO OTHER CIRCUMSTANCES feel free to drop us a 5 star rating on iTunes (or wherever your local podcasts are sold)

This week on The Tyranny of Thumbs we've closed our eyes as we steadily march deeper into our Spooky Games Month. This time with Detention. I know there were some of us left scratching their head when this game made it through the grueling deliberations episode, especially in the face of games like Inside, We Know the Devil and of course, Year Walk. But, without a doubt, this game surpassed all of our expectations and proved it had every right to make the list. What a pleasant surprise for all of us... all of us except one. Poor James, still sleeping with an industrial-grade floodlight as a nightlight from last week's Layers of Fear episode, dug deep once again and could only muster the strength to say one thing "When will Spooky Games Month be over?" Sorry buddy, as you can see below we have a little bit left to go. Spoilers for the Podcast: No one fights today. I'll leave that up to you if you think that is a good or bad thing. Deliberations Episode: The one where we decide the list! Week 1: 3 (short!) games in one! The Static Speaks My Name, Pony Island and Eversion. Week 2: Layers of Fear Week 3: Detention Week 4: Yomawari N.A. Week 5: Deceit Spooky Games Month hype video here! Check it out! If you have a question or just want to talk some smack about how poorly we did XYZ you can hit us up on our emails: tyrannyofthumbs@gmail.com for those of you who update your computers and like to stay current. sponsoredbyvisual@gmail.com for those of you who remember the good old days and don't want to give them up just yet. Last and least at the same time: Our Instagram, Twitter and Youtube that we are squatting on and haven't done anything with (yet). Just imagine all the cool content we could put up there! Remember, everyone has to do their part... so for now if you could imagine the cool stuff on there that would help us a lot!
Simogo is a legendary developer on iOS. We've covered their work in the past, especially the stunning Year Walk. Sayonara Wild Hearts is a big departure from their previous games. Get a load of this...

Welcome to show 163. This week Duke was MIA due to American stuff he had to do, but fear not as we did arrange a cool stand in in the shape of Amar, all the way from sunny Scotland, and he did a great job, he also played some stuff which was, Far Cry 3, Pilotwings Resort 3DS and the classic that is Crackdown, Chinny played more Sleeping Dogs, finished the Far Cry 3 co op missions and of course Halo Wars and The Daddy got to grips with 999, Vanquish and Year Walk on the iOS. Duke may not have been there, but VlaDOS was and she gave us Bleed to play from the indie games and of course Chinny brought us the news which was mainly of a PS4 variety. We finished off with Facebook, Twitter and Emails as always! Enjoy.
