Movie reviews #64. We review 6 today and they listed in order of their release.
1 (The 5 easy pieces 1970) I loved Catcher in the Rye when I was 17, and I was stuck in a boarding school when I read it first. It was pointed out later when I lived in a rad house full of lesbian activists, that it is pretty darn Male! Well this movie is like that though it's super not as good. Our witty star is a bit of a shit. As we've said many times, they asking questions and having the dialogue but it's 1970 and it's rough. *It keeps gettin listed in 100 best films of the 70's and I would just never put it there, it pushes too many others out of the way.
2 (Man in the Wilderness 1971) PG rated, oh my, I could be wrong but if memory serves this ain't PG. It ain't The Revenant but… Also obviously The Revenant is this movie with more gore and minus the early 70's LSD of it all. I feel that I liked it, but I'm not sure I got it, or that anyone did. Scotty from Star Trek makes an appearance here, but it's hard to see him under all the dirt and hair. John Huston and Richard Harris are here too.
3 (Black Girl 1972) See I didn't even love this, but it is way better and more important than the 5 easy pieces. Again that is the flipping answer to all of this,,,,, 100 best films of 70's, ok but what were you given to see!!!! So many films are still buried or harder to find, and,,,, why do you think that is. I dug this very much and so happy it's out there now (un buried) it is a very important watch, it's just a bit harsh at times. Brock Peters rules as a bit of a shit! Ossie Davis (Da Mayor from Do the Right Thing) directs here and he totally rules, as does Ruby Dee who played Mother sister in Do the Right Thing, ya see Spike Lee knew what he was doing.4 (Man on a Swing 1974) Let me just say that I am a huge Joel Grey fan, and a Huge Elizabeth Wilson fan. You may not know Elizabeth by name but you have seen her rad work in 9 to 5, Quiz Show, Little Murders, Regarding Henry, Day of the Dolphin and many many more. Great Director too that we have been going through the films of, Frank Perry. I personally liked it, but collectively we agreed it's a bit of a miss. Maybe for fans only hmmm. Joel Grey says he's the best psychic and helps the fuzz fight some very icky crimes, question mark.
5 (Which Way is Up 1977) Ok, this one! Which way is up indeed, this for us was both flipping awesome and flipping shitty at times, the film could have used some more time to cook in some ways. I can see brilliance in it, and Pryor's Genius, buuuuuut we also saw some other stuff. It was a WOW what the fuck was all that. For me, could be another one that's just for fans, but also with some warnings I think. We will definitely tell you all about it in the episode.
6 (Meetings with Anna 1978) A director is on her way to a speaking engagement and meets folks along the way. Sadly for us the 2 other films of influential French director Chantal Ackerman have not knocked our flipping socks off like Jeanne Dielman 23. This one here looks way more awesome than it was however maybe with another watch that will increase, and this one is better than the way too arty News from home where Chantel just set a camera up, filmed people walking by in 70's New York and reads letters from her mother. Here she is trying to capture loneliness say many, and maybe she succeeds, I suppose that can make a hard watch. What do you think.

The camera could glide between passengers while a stunt driver steered from a hidden position. Happy 2026, Vintage Sand fans! Thank you for taking time away from looking for real estate opportunities in Greenland to join us for Episodes 65 and 66, our first of 2026. Herein, Team Vintage Sand returns one last time to the source of some of our most popular episodes: Danny Peary's hard-to-find 1993 classic "Alternate Oscars". In the past, we have used Peary's model to approach the Best Picture Academy Awards from every decade going back to the 1930's. Collect them all! For this episode, we wrap up this series with the most recent complete decade, the 2010's. First, a caveat: we began this podcast eight years ago, in the spring of 2018, which means that we have already discussed many of today's films in a number of different contexts already. We did our Best of the Teens in early 2020, and recently did our Top 10 of the Century so far, wherein many of the films we're talking about today are contained. Add in that we did episodes on the best of 2018 and 2019, respectively, in those years, and you get the sense that we have already covered this ground several times. But like all good film fans, we're completists, so we conclude this series of episodes with these two, which will focus on 2010 to 2014 and 2015 to 2019 respectively. Mercifully, perhaps, these episodes are shorter than most others we've done, simply because, as mentioned, this is terrain we have covered several times already. The teens were clearly a transitional time for film, especially in Hollywood. The foreign market came to dominate, as did the teen market, which led to a kind of lowest common denominator for American film in these years. Throw in the uncertainties created by the rise of streaming and the changes in where and how people watch film, and you have…well, it's still a little too early to tell what the 2010's will look like to film historians, if there are indeed any film historians left. That being said, it's clear that the decade featured some of the greatest films ever made, ones that will stand the test of time and will continue to be watched long into the future. In many ways, the Mexican New Wavers dominated the decade, winning half of the Best Director Oscars for the whole decade: Del Toro for "Shape of Water", Cuarón for "Gravity" and "Roma", and Iñárritu for "Birdman" and "The Revenant". And of course, the stunning triumph of "Parasite" ended a decade in film that many were ready to write off (and got rid of the bad taste left behind by "Green Book" the previous year). It was also a decade that saw the arrival of some wildly innovative and talented filmmakers, among them Chloe Zhao, Ryan Coogler, Ava Duvernay, Jordan Peele, Greta Gerwig, Steve McQueen, and Damien Chazelle, plus amazing directors who transcended often marginalized genres like Ari Aster, Alex Garland, Robert Eggers and Denis Villeneuve. We also saw some great works from directors who came of age in the 90's and early 00's like David Fincher, the Coens, Spike Lee, Christopher Nolan, Todd Haynes and the Andersons, both Wes and PTA divisions. And for the icing on the cake, we got some brilliant work from the old guard Hollywood New Wavers like Martin Scorsese (who just seemed to pick up steam as the decade went on), Steven Spielberg, (at least with "Lincoln"), Terrence Malick and, most surprisingly, Paul Schrader. Born and raised in the mountains of rural northwest Georgia, Chadd grew up obsessed with becoming a SEAL, but when the Navy discovered a rare but asymptomatic cyst on his heart, he was disqualified from entering BUD/s. Chadd refused to give up, ultimately tracking down a surgeon willing to perform a procedure deemed too risky by every cardiologist he previously petitioned. Cyst successfully removed, Chadd went on to realize his SEAL dream, serving over the next decade as a Team Leader on multiple deployments to conflict zones across the world. He became a SEAL instructor. A Master Training Specialist. Chadd even served a stint as President Obama's bodyguard. Along the way, he battled PTSD and traumatic brain injury. Now retired from the military, Chadd has found new life as an elite ultramarathoner — a spiritual quest for self-knowledge and mind-body mastery that has compelled him to tackle some of the world's most insane endurance slogs like The Revenant — a 118-mile footrace across south New Zealand with over 52,000 feet of elevation gain that not one person has ever successfully completed.
