In today's Daily Fix:CD Projekt RED has made it official: The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is getting (at least) one more expansion in the form of Songs of the Past. It's scheduled for release in 2027 and is the third major DLC for The Witcher 3, coming about 11 years after the last expansion, Blood and Wine. This should hold fans over while they wait for The Witcher 4, which currently has no release date. In other open-world RPG news, Warhorse Studios teased their upcoming Lord of the Rings game, and reassured fans of their Kingdom Come: Deliverance games that the LOTR RPG will be similar to those. And finally, Valve is not immune to the global economic situation as they have now raised the price of the Steam Deck OLED models. What if everything you think you know about the Witches' Sabbath is wrong?The broomsticks, the Devil, the midnight orgies on remote mountaintops: this image has haunted the Western imagination for nearly six hundred years. But where did it actually come from? Was it an inquisitorial fantasy imposed from above? A distortion of real folk traditions of spirit-flight and nocturnal procession? A recycled conspiracy theory older than Christianity itself? Or something stranger than any of those?In this video I trace the Sabbath from its origins in a handful of Alpine witch trials in the 1430s, through the great demonological texts of the early modern period, to its reinvention by romantics, feminists, and modern practitioners who know the image was constructed and use it anyway. I cover the Cohn vs Ginzburg debate that still organises the field, the Friulian benandanti who fought witches in their sleep, the antisemitic roots of the word "sabbath" itself, Margaret Murray's influential and almost entirely wrong witch-cult hypothesis, and why the Wheel of the Year is a twentieth-century invention. I also look at where the term "esbat" actually comes from (spoiler: not where you think), the connection between the Sabbath and the Wild Hunt, and what contemporary Italian folk practitioners make of all this today.This is serious historiography made accessible, not dumbed down. My guest for this episode is author and folklorist Hugh Williams, who joined me to discuss his new book The Horn of Mercia; The Wild Hunt and The Spectral Huntsman of Central England. In the book, Hugh explores the history of the legendary Wild Hunt, delving into the ancient origins of the idea, it's emergence as a supernatural phenomenon in Medieval Europe and how it has been recorded and reported in the folklore of the English Midlands, where he grew up. He also writes about both the mythic figures who were said to lead the hunt and those that were solitary, most notably Herne the Hunter a character famously mentioned in the Shakespeare play The Merry Wives of Windsor. Hugh investigates the legend of Herne in depth and, using an evidence-based approach, theorises a new origin for this legendary phantom. I begin the interview by talking briefly with Hugh about the medieval kingdom of Mercia. From there he discusses the history of the Wild Hunt legend, and goes through his theory about the origins and evidence for Herne the Hunter. We are graced once more by Prof. Jon F. White of Crecganford to discuss the mythological stories of Siberia, that made their way into America. We started with some Indo European basics and I got us off track almost immediately. However, we ventured back into the oldest stories including the Cosmic Hunt (not The Wild Hunt) and the Earth Diver. Somewhere along the line I scratched an itch about Cain and Abel being the Indo European twins of husnabdry v pastoralist; or founder and sacrificer. I didn't ask - yet - about Jacob wrestling with El and Gilgamesh and Enkidu.
