Frigus is a snowshoe race put on by The Endurance Society, a Northeast based event company run by Andy Weinberg. Many OCR enthusiasts from back in the day know the importance of Andy but nowadays he is still a solid race director. Speaking of OCR enthusiasts, I was able to have Scott Sweeney call in to talk about his experience at Frigus. Scott is frequently a volunteer coordinator for races like FIT Challenge and Bonefrog. Whether he is participating or playing a crucial role in the event, he is always a welcome sight. Be sure to thank him for the work he does as an unsung hero. Races can't happen without volunteers, and the volunteer coordinator is vital in getting them together to keep races running smoothly. 0:00 - 2:11 - Intro 2:11 - 3:52 - Quick News 3:52 - 4:19 - Content Preface 4:19 - 20:42 - Scott Sweeney Interview 20:42 - End - Outro ____ News Stories: Canadian Spartan Schedule Savage Point Series John Albon's AlbonApp OCR Running Clinic with Coach Diaz at Underdog Surprise Secret Link Leg Day Secret Link ____ Related Episodes: 60. Andy Weinberg lives to help people realize what they are truly capable of. His company, The Endurance Society, puts on challenging races for runners, skiers and bikers. These are not typical races, and include a snowshoe marathon, a 10-day Ultrarunning event with distances of 8k to 888k (551 miles!!!!) and a death race style event that the details are kept secret. An endurance athlete himself, Andy has participated in 100 mile running races, long distance swimming events, and even a quintuple iron man distance triathlon (12 miles swim/560 mile bike/131 mile run). He is a strong believer that Adversity is the path to success.Andy has inspired me since I met him over 10 years ago, and he shows no sign of slowing down. I hope you enjoy the conversation.
Episode 168 - First up, as promised, Amelia and Carlo join Matt for a chat about Superbowl 50. They really planned on no running talk, but then Amelia went and placed 2nd at The Sean O'Brien 100k. Andy co-founded The Death Race with Joe DeSena nearly 10 years ago. Joe and Andy have since split and Andy created The Endurance Society with his new partner, Jack Cary. Episode 91 - We've got several interviews from the 2014 Death Race on tap for you in the next few episodes. We start it off with today's subject, Andy Weinberg. In the middle of this year's Summer Death Race, Matt B. sat down for a long interview with Andy. For those that don't know, Andy, along with Joe Desena, helped create the Death Race, which eventually led to the creation of Spartan Race. Andy talks about how it all began and what caused him to move to Pittsfield, VT. We talk some about the magic of the people, and the town behind The Death Race. He also regales us with a few stories of race shenanigans that involve Joe Desena and others. Today's episode is sponsored by Men's Health Urbanathlon. Use code ORM to receive 20% of your entry. Part Two picks up on Friday evening June 21. We begin with Andy Weinberg speaking to the familes and crew members shortly after the athletes were sent off to build the "Stairway to Heaven". As we continue on, we give you a sneak peek inside the mind of Joe Desena as we followed him around as much as possible. You'll hear how he deals with the racers as they decide to quit, keep going, or in one case, beg to be DQ'd. We also catch some various racers thoughts and feelings throughout the next 48-72 hours. We end with two finishers, Erica Matta and Andrew Hostetler. This duo sums up their experience and the DR experience as a whole rather well. Today's episode is sponsored by Superhero Scramble. This awesome race has 3 more races to go this year including the marathon distance SuperVillian to take place in Illinois on August 24th. Housekeeping note: We now have a new permanent home for the podcast on iTunes.
