Kari Malkovich is best known as a community leader in Woodland Hills, Utah, but not many know her past struggles that drive her desire to serve and lift others. In this first-part of a two-part series, she expands on her backstory to our hosts (and her good friends), Jennie Taylor and Michelle Scharf. She compares the problems of life to running a relay race, wherein each lap, we are leaning on our past self's lessons of survival. She offers advice from her experiences in emergency management with the acronym W.O.O.P.; Wish- what our goal is, the Outcome we want to achieve, acknowledging any Obstacles that might get in our way, and making Plans to reach the goals and overcome obstacles. Even though we live in challenging times, we can become Relentlessly Resilient as we lean on and learn from one another's experiences. Hosts Jennie Taylor and Michelle Scharf are no strangers to overcoming adversity; Michelle lost her husband to cancer, while Jennie's husband Major Brent Taylor was killed in the service of our country. Their stories bond them together, and now listeners can join them weekly as they visit with others enduring challenges and who teach us how they are exercising resiliency, finding value in their grief, and purpose in moving forward. In this episode of The Kriya Yoga Podcast, please enjoy a recording from our November monthly lesson offered to our "Journal of a Kriya Yoga Teacher" Patreon members. Here we discuss the obstacle of fear. Fear prevents us from going deeper into our meditation, or making positive changes in our spiritual life. Fear is a reality, but not a defining factor of who we are. Once this is realized, we can be free of its influence. This talk is based off the writing in my new book, An Essential Guide to Kriya Yoga Practice. Now available in hardcover on Amazon. Your host, Ryan Kurczak, is a Kriya Yoga meditation teacher and author. He was authorized to teach Kriya Yoga in 2005, by Roy Eugene Davis, a direct student of Paramahansa Yogananda. Are you an overdoer? Are you running on empty? Do you worry about people and then get upset when they don't worry about you? If so, you're not alone. Those of us who have difficulty speaking our truth can find it easier to take care of others than to care for the self. And while on the surface, this seems like an endearing quality, it is a recipe for relationship disaster. Listen in as Life Coach and Codependency Recovery Coach Lisa A. Romano gets honest about what makes her snarky and how her development journey can help you acknowledge a quality in yourself that might need some improvement too. Lisa A. Romano is a Life Coach, meditation teacher, and bestselling author who is changing how victims of emotional abuse and neglect overcome subconscious limiting beliefs through her flagship course, The 12-Week Breakthrough Coaching Program. Her online codependency recovery program offers a sound methodology that allows students to take immediate action they benefit from. Her framework supports self-inquiry through a practical, organized, distilled, proven process that results in mental clarity, emotional responsibility, peace of mind, and life skills that foster self-empowerment. Her experiential wisdom, actionable tools, and proven systems and processes have assisted adult children of alcoholics, and those wounded in childhood, to find the courage to live life on their terms instead of remaining in toxic relationships and perpetual states of self-abandonment that mirror painful childhood experiences. Her program is offered live with one-to-one coaching and as a self-paced course. The next live course launches in February 2023 https://www.lisaaromano.com/12wbcp
This episode talks about Vell's take on the differences between a chance and a choice. The Good Read for this episode is The Obstacle Is the Way: The Timeless Art of Turning Trials into Triumph by Ryan Holiday. The book draws its inspiration from stoicism, the ancient Greek philosophy of enduring pain or adversity with perseverance and resilience. Stoics focus on the things they can control, let go of everything else, and turn every new obstacle into an opportunity to get better, stronger, tougher. As Marcus Aurelius put it nearly 2000 years ago: “The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way.” Ryan Holiday shows us how some of the most successful people in history—from John D. Rockefeller to Amelia Earhart to Ulysses S. Grant to Steve Jobs—have applied stoicism to overcome difficult or even impossible situations. Their embrace of these principles ultimately mattered more than their natural intelligence, talents, or luck. If you're feeling frustrated, demoralized, or stuck in a rut, this book can help you turn your problems into your biggest advantages. And along the way it will inspire you with dozens of true stories of the greats from every age and era. What's Popping in Vell's World consist of Black artist not supporting the Elon buying Twitter, Kyrie situation has us wondering is Ye was right?, Cora Faith Foundation, and more. Hello to you listening in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Motivate Your Monday and your host, Diane Wyzga.Maybe like me you've asked for help from a friend or loved one and they said, “Tie a knot in the end of your rope and hold on to that.”It's a good bit of help. With enough rope to tie a knot and enough strength to hold on you'll probably be okay. But what if there's nothing to hold on to?I remember being on an Outward Bound mountaineering trip high in the Canadian Rockies with 5 other women. In pairs we were climbing up and then rappelling down the sheer face of a mountain. The guides were far above us and out of sight having climbed beyond a cliff edge to secure the ropes. Caught midway between the top of the cliff edge and the rocky ground far below my partner, with fear in her voice, stammered out: “I can't find anything to hold on to.” Time passed. And then a voice from far above us called down, “Grab it with both hands!”I'm here to tell you it worked! My partner found the help she was looking for: inside herself. When you can't find anything to hold on to, grab it with both hands. You're invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, I hope you'll subscribe, follow, share a 5-star rating and nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, and join us next time! For more details on this podcast visit: https://www.journeybeyondweightloss.com/blog/89 Next week is Thanksgiving here in the states, and then we move full time into the Holiday Season! It's happening fast!! This time of year is always tough for people who struggle with obesity, for a lot of reasons, not the least of which is all the tempting treats around! So I wanted to take some time and talk about what we can do to prepare for the holidays so we don't gain any weight. I recently discovered a process called WOOP, which stands for Wish, Outcome, Obstacle and Plan. Listen in as Marchelle and I use this process to plan for success during our holiday seasons, and then you can WOOP your holidays too! Episode Highlights: (07:23) One study showed that people gain just one pound over the holiday season, but that one pound never comes off! So if you gain a pound a year between 30 and 60, that means you are 30 pounds heavier by the time you hit 60 than you were at 30, purely from indulging in holiday treats. Frankly I believe most people gain more than that, as this was just one small study. (10:00) To handle the holidays, we're going to use a process called WOOP, which is based on 20 years of research done by a scientist named Gabriele Oettingen. WOOP stands for; Wish, Outcome, Obstacle, Plan. Gabrielle has a website called woopmylife.org, where she trains you how to do this. I would recommend you listen to this episode and then go to her website as well. (23:53) The plan is an “if”, and “then”. So you think about what you can do to overcome your obstacle. You name an action that you can take or a thought you can think that would overcome the obstacle.
Strict with Yourself I've said it before and I'll say it again. Ryan Holiday is one of my favorite writers. We've featured a bunch of his books including The Obstacle Is the Way, The Daily Stoic, Ego Is the Enemy, and Stillness Is the Key. He's currently working on “The Stoic Virtue Series” in which he's creating a new book for each of the cardinal virtues of Stoicism: Courage, Temperance, Justice, and Wisdom. We briefly chatted about the first book in the series: Courage Is Calling. Today we're going to chat about an Idea from the second book in the series: Discipline Is Destiny. We're going to talk about an Idea that didn't make it into the Note. It's from a chapter called “Tolerant with Others. Strict with Yourself.” Ryan tells us: “'I am prepared to forgive everybody's mistakes,' Cato the Elder said, ‘except my own.' Ben Franklin, many generations later, would put forth an even better rule: ‘Search others for their virtues, thyself for thy vices.' Or as Marcus Aurelius put it, Tolerant with others, strict for yourself.” That's Today's +1. Let's be tolerant with others—looking for their VIRTUES and forgiving their mistakes. Let's be strict with ourselves—looking for our vices and getting to work on them. We have more than enough work to do on ourselves. Let's do it. TODAY.
Summary Obstacles standing in the way of progress often seem insurmountable. Leaders who remain adaptable, flexible, and pause to give themselves time to assess options increase their likelihood of breakthroughs. And very often, the solution to the problem sits within the problem itself. Takeaways √ The seeds of a problem's solution are usually contained in the problem itself. √ Effectively problem solvers work within the constraints of limited time and budget and ask a question of curiosity: what can we do differently right here with what we have? √ Overcoming obstacles, according to author Ryan Holiday, requires that we take three steps: 1. Change our perception of the problem — our attitude and approach to it. 2. Use our energy and creativity to uncover the opportunity within the problem 3. Cultivate and maintain an inner will to overcome setbacks. Referenced The Obstacle is the Way

Torah 113: Rabeinu brings us a chiddush in the name of the Baal Shem Tov who tells us that before G-d brings any decree into the world, He asks the world and the man who the judgment is on whether he agrees to it or not… Torah 114: Rabeinu explains that hidden Tzadikim are able to draw down abundant good to the world because people don't create strife and ask questions against this Tzadik (because he's hidden). Rabeinu teaches us how strife against the famous Tzadikim is very beneficial to them and enables them to bring down abundance without accusations. Torah 115: Rabeinu teaches us a principle that every Jew who wants to serve G-d must know: when a person begins to return to G-d, he is forced to face obstacles that prevent him from walking on an upright path. The reason for this is because G-d loves justice, and His trait of judgement is accusing this person saying that he isn't worthy of coming close to G-d after all the bad he has done in his life. But G-d, loves the Jewish people more than His love for judgement, so He hides Himself within the obstacle so that the person should find Him within the test… Torah 116: Rabeinu teaches us why Charity saves a person from sin…

Answer the Call, Hero! In our last +1, we talked about virtue #1 in Admiral McRaven's Hero Code. COURAGE. I reminded us of the fact that Aristotle told us that courage is the most important virtue—the one that vitalizes all the other virtues. Why? Because… If we don't have the COURAGE to take action in the presence of fear, then all of our supposed Wisdom and Self-Mastery and Love and Gratitude and Hope and Curiosity and Zest is stuck in Theory-land and is, to put it bluntly, USELESS if we don't have the courage to put it into practice. Churchill echoed that wisdom when he told us that: “Courage is rightly esteemed the first of human qualities, because it is the quality which guarantees the rest.” Note: Churchill also EMBODIED that Heroic Courage in the face of overwhelming odds and looming catastrophe during World War II. We, arguably, have HIM (and his tenacious (!) courage) to thank most for leading in such turbulent times to help create the world we live in today. And… Today I'd like to talk more about Ryan Holiday's take on the subject of courage. So… Let's. As you know if you've been following along, Ryan Holiday is one of my all-time favorite writers and thinkers. My respect for him and for his dedication to his craft as a writer and a practicing Stoic grows with each new book of his I read. So far, we've covered The Obstacle Is the Way, The Daily Stoic, Ego Is the Enemy, and Stillness Is the Key. They are all fantastic. As expected, the first book in his new virtue series on THE most essential virtue: Courage Is Calling is ALSO fantastic. The book is packed with practical wisdom on why and HOW to embody Heroic courage. Here's one passage we can reflect on today… Ryan tells us: “Courage is the management of and triumph over fear. It's the decision—in a moment of peril, or day in and day out—to take ownership, to assert agency, over a situation, over yourself, over the fate that everyone else has resigned themselves to. We can curse the darkness, or we can light a candle. We can wait for someone else to come and save us, or we can decide to stand and deliver ourselves. Which will it be? Every hero faces this choice. Our discrimen—the critical turning point. The moment of truth. Will you be brave? Will you put yourself out there? What will you reveal your character to be? If cowardice is failure to do your duty, then courage is the decision to step up and do it. Answering the call. Overriding fear and seizing your destiny. Doing the thing you cannot do because it needs to be done . . . with fortitude and spirit, guts and grit, even if you have no idea if you'll succeed. This will not be easy. But we cannot fear. We must, as Shakespeare said, ‘meet the time as it seeks us.' Our destiny is here. Let's seize it.” That's Today's +1. Courage is calling. Let's answer the call. TOGETHER. Today.

1047 Don't ever let anyone or anything stop you from achieving your dreams. Our guest today had a dream of opening a brewery and full kitchen restaurant. Obstacle after obstacle got in the way but eventually they found place to start their brewery in October of 2009 but that was just the beginning. They still had to renovate, actually start brewing, continue renovations and wait almost 3 years before they finally had their dreams become a reality. Now they have a great selection of beer, have won many awards and brought pride back to the riverside village. I can't wait to hear all about this entrepreneurial journey! “The obstacle is the path” is a Zen proverb. Usually when we encounter obstacles we go around them. But on the spiritual path the only way around is through. Our neuroses can be obstacles. Our work with them is but 1% of the process even if it feels like a huge amount to us; the other 99% comes from grace. We don't have to fix neurosis, which is just energy that can be used for transformation. Every neurotic manifestation has a complement which can be transformed into something that serves. We can bring practice to every form our lives take. At the heart of practice is to live with kindness, generosity, and compassion. How we relate with our obstacles is key, so having compassion for ourselves is important. We can experience grace even if we don't believe in God, however we conceive of that. Things that feel so big to us are really not that big to the universe. When we make small steps the universe responds. We're good at hiding from our obstacles or neuroses. We can ask ourselves, “What is it that owns me right now?” It is important to see, be curious and intimate with our obstacles without judgment, which is the practice of self-observation. What we do internally has an impact on the world. To be inwardly active and outwardly passive, without acting out, builds a lot of energy. Most people are caught between the inspiration for spiritual transformation and the movement of ego. Over time, if we continue right action, we begin to convey to ego that we won't be manipulated or controlled. What we want ego to do is to put its power in service to right action. Chris is a co-author of The Conscious Parenting Workbook whose practice includes work as a personal chef and nanny. Debbie is an advocate for the wisdom of community and conscious parenting and the author of Widening the Circle: Inspiration and Guidance for Community Living.

Glad to be back after a few weeks off preparing to celebrate our milestone 40th Pastoral and Church anniversary at New Covenant Church, serving God's people, as well as enjoying some vacation time in Europe with my wife Patricia. I know that many of my followers enjoy my photography, so on the blog I've posted some photos and video clips that you might enjoy. With all the pressures and challenges of life, it is essential and comforting to know God is for us. This is especially true when we are paying attention to Him. He loves us regardless of our state, but our goal is to be pleasing to the Lord. He draws near to us when we draw near to him. I would like to share an insight from last Sunday's message in which we talked about solutions, answers, and hope. I used the phrase "There is an app for that." This became a parable for experiences during our vacation in which almost everything we did was helped by using an app on my iPhone. Life also has apps or applications of the heart and mind. We discussed this in the lesson on Sunday. Check out the podcast or view on our YouTube channel. How we think, or our type of mindset, is a very important factor to the quality of our lives. It's important to have something that I will call "a solution mindset." Let me share a Scripture with you and explain what I mean. Isaiah 59:19 reads, "So shall they fear the name of the Lord from the west, And His glory from the rising of the sun; When the enemy comes in like a flood, The Spirit of the Lord will lift up a standard against him." It is an encouraging thought that when the enemy comes in like a flood the Spirit of God raises up a standard. But I think there's a better way to look at this Scripture, especially in light of the fact that original Bible languages did not include punctuation. In our first reading the enemy is characterized as a flood coming in. Let me offer this alternative reading of Isaiah 59:19: When the enemy comes in, like a flood the Spirit of the Lord will lift up a standard against him. I'm not saying this reading is correct and the other one is wrong, this is an example of developing a solution mindset where we don't place as much emphasis on the trouble as on the answer. I like to think that it is the Spirit of God who brings the flood of blessing more than the enemy bringing a flood of trouble. I like this quote from a book entitled The Obstacle is the Way by Ryan Holiday “Just because other people say that something is hopeless or crazy or broken to pieces doesn't mean it is. We decide what story to tell ourselves.” The more you realize that God is for you, the more you will see that His solutions answers and hope are bigger than the problems we face. Have a great day, God bless, and be encouraged!

We prepare and are excited to take that leap and then talk ourselves out of it. This hesitancy, despite us doing all our research and preparation, can actually paralyze us. When you choose to invest, you must remember you are taking a step to your own financial freedom. Your first action is making the decision to establish a passive income. The people that struggle most with discipline aren't always Netflix-obsessed couch lovers. A lot of times, it's very successful, high-achieving individuals that have a hard time with it…but why?Ryan Holiday would explain that it's those people who have a tendency to be overly-disciplined causing them to risk things like health, happiness, and relationships. Ryan is the bestselling author of many books including Trust Me, I'm Lying, The Obstacle Is the Way, Ego Is the Enemy, and his latest book, Discipline is Destiny. Ruta started working with a new team that had recently adopted Agile. Many of the practices and processes were new to the team, but also to Ruta as the Scrum Master. As Ruta started to push for some changes, she noticed that the Product Owner and Business Analyst on the team wanted to control the Sprint Reviews very carefully, including who was invited to see the team's deliverables. When Ruta started to ask about why they wanted to control the Sprint Reviews so carefully, she discovered something that helped her understand the why, but also the need to consider people's personalities when implementing Scrum. In this episode, we refer to the book The Obstacle Is the Way: The Timeless Art of Turning Trials into Triumph by Ryan Holiday.
