The Month of Jeff keeps rolling, and today we are giving the thru-hiking world some love. I tracked down a Jeff who just finished the Appalachian Trail in 2025, Jeff Coull, the guy behind the coullbean.com blog.Follow Jeff on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/coullbean/Jeff wanted to hike the AT for almost a decade, but in 2024 it stopped being a “someday” goal and became a “need to.” We talk about the scariest part of committing to a long trail, the conversation with his girlfriend Robin, and how doing something huge does not have to come from tragedy or running away from your life.We get into the details that make a thru hike real: early mistakes (starting too fast, an ankle ligament barking, a sleeping pad that died for two straight weeks), figuring out resupplies when you are basically learning in public, and the constant debate between pop tarts and protein. There is also a strong case made for frozen burritos thawing on the outside of your pack, plus the harsh reality of FarOut water comments when Maine is dry.Jeff carried a “Robin Rock” most of the trail, hid it in plant photos to see if she would notice, and accidentally created a recurring side quest by leaving it behind and coordinating a rescue mission. He also carried a sealed ICE letter from Robin all the way to Katahdin and only opened it on top, which is where the emotions finally caught up.We also talk about trail friendships, why it is so easy to connect with people out there, and how Jeff's view of the “trail family” idea changed once he got confident enough to make his own plan. Then there is the moment in Tennessee when a “power hiking song” conversation turned into an unexpected hour of Freebird on repeat, and a big lesson about forgiveness and leaving old baggage behind. To wrap it up, we hit quick hitters: favorite trail town, best meal, best trail name he heard, what the whole thing cost, and the lesson that kept coming back over and over, be gentle with yourself.Sponsors: Janji, Garage Grown Gear, CS Coffee.Chapters00:00 The Journey Begins: Aspirations and Realizations05:22 Navigating Relationships: Conversations with Loved Ones08:25 Symbolic Connections: The Robin Rock11:25 The Learning Curve: First Experiences on the Trail14:13 Dreams and Goals: The Call of the AT17:28 Life Changes: Quitting the Job for Adventure20:21 Challenges of Thru-Hiking: The Reality vs. Expectations23:29 Building Confidence: Finding Your Own Path26:17 Nutrition on the Trail: The Food Dilemma29:21 The Importance of Gut Health: Eating Fresh on the Trail30:53 Trail Nutrition: Creative Food Choices34:24 Adversity on the Trail: Overcoming Challenges39:13 Building Connections: The Social Aspect of Hiking45:32 Moments of Transformation: Personal Growth on the Trail58:41 The Challenge of Water Scarcity01:01:15 Emotional Reflections on Completing the Trail01:03:27 Slowing Down to Savor the Experience01:06:21 The Emotional Climax at Katahdin01:12:18 Trail Towns and Memorable Meals01:15:27 Lessons Learned and Future AdventuresSubscribe to Substack: http://freeoutside.substack.comSupport this content on patreon: HTTP://patreon.com/freeoutsideBuy my book "Free Outside" on Amazon: https://amzn.to/39LpoSFEmail me to buy a signed copy of my book, "Free Outside" at jeff@freeoutside.comWatch the movie about setting the record on the Colorado Trail: https://tubitv.com/movies/100019916/free-outsideWebsite: www.Freeoutside.comInstagram: thefreeoutsidefacebook: www.facebook.com/freeoutside

Most men obsess over goals - the outcomes, the achievements, the shiny targets. But goals don't build men. Standards do. In today's Field Notes, Ryan breaks down why standards define your identity, how they outperform goals in every way, and why your life only changes when you elevate the rules you live by. He shares powerful examples, including recovering from a major injury, why men fail when they rely on motivation, and how to build standards that make you unshakable. Ryan also outlines a four-step framework to reset your identity, eliminate weak standards, and cement the behaviors that transform your life. If you want 2026 to be different, this episode explains exactly where to start. Key Takeaways Goals are emotionally dependent, standards are identity-based. Standards keep you anchored in the present - goals keep you trapped in the future. Goals collapse under adversity; standards strengthen you because they're non-negotiable. A man becomes powerful when he lives by a code with zero negotiation. Your life changes when your identity upgrades, not when your goals get bigger. Four-step framework to build standards that stick: -Identify the man you refuse to be. -Build non-negotiables in all four quadrants (Calibration, Connection, Condition, Contribution). -Build accountability. -Enforce consequences when you violate your own standards. 00:00 - Introduction 00:09 - Why Most Men Get Goals Backwards 01:20 - Goals Don't Build Men — Standards Do 02:33 - Examples of Weak vs. Strong Standards 04:34 - Ryan's Pec Tear: Standards in Adversity 06:24 - A Man Rises or Falls to His Standards 07:50 - Why Goals Fail Men 09:33 - How Goals Delay Action and Keep Men Stuck 11:23 - Goals Collapse Under Stress 12:57 - Standards Create Structure and Strength 14:38 - How Standards Transform a Man 16:10 - Standards Prevent Moral Drift 17:32 - Building Trust Through Consistency 18:57 - Standards Make Men Anti-Fragile 21:03 - Stop Waiting for "All Green Lights" 22:43 - Identity Before Action 23:28 - Fast Progress Comes From Identity Shifts 24:26 - The "Light Yourself on Fire" Lesson 25:14 - Reverse Engineering Goals Into Standards 25:57 - Step 1: Identify the Man You Refuse to Be 27:38 - Making Weak Behaviors Repulsive 29:31 - Step 2: Non-Negotiables in the Four Quadrants 31:32 - Step 3: Accountability 33:00 - Step 4: Enforce Consequences 33:42 - Final Challenge: Raise Your Standards 35:45 - Iron Council Promotion 36:33 - Preview Call Details Battle Planners: Pick yours up today! In this episode of the Wine and Gold Talk podcast, Ethan Sands and Chris Fedor break down why the Cavs' final 10 games before the New Year represent Cleveland's first real adversity check. Coming off a five-day break filled with pointed film sessions, blunt messaging and a renewed emphasis on accountability, the Cavs now face a six-game run against sub-.500 opponents followed by four tougher matchups to close out December. The duo digs into what this stretch means for a group that has spent the season talking about mental toughness and maturity — and why those themes will finally be tested in real time. They discuss the latest on Darius Garland's toe, how Kenny Atkinson is challenging the roster, especially Evan Mobley, and what responding to early-season adversity would reveal about the team's mental growth. When Things Feel Unfair, Remember This About Christ's Atonement by Autumn Dickson In the past, I have shied away from talking about the Official Declarations, not because I don't believe what's in them, but because I feel that there are an immense number of people who can speak on those subjects with more knowledge, wisdom, and personal experience than I can. That being said, I do my best to simply share what the Lord wants me to share, and if I get some of the details wrong, the principles that I teach are true and I figure the Lord forgives me and is proud of me for making the attempt. This week, we read about polygamy and race and the priesthood. For many, these are not easy topics. This post is not to try and convince anyone that the Church is true. Rather, I hope that this post can comfort those who still believe that this church holds the fullness of the gospel but simultaneously feel pain when reading these declarations. As I was studying for this post, I came across a talk that we'll discuss more about later, but I wanted to start with this quote from President Eyring's April 2009 General Conference address titled “Adversity.” President Eyring is speaking of trials and difficulty when he says, “The anger comes at least in part from a feeling that what is happening is unfair…When they vanish, a feeling of injustice can come.” I think some people can relate to these feelings of unfairness and injustice when speaking about the declarations. If you've received a testimony of the gospel and you know the Lord has led you here, sometimes this makes it more painful, not less. Instead of being able to say, “God would never allow something so unfair,” you find yourself with the feeling of, “God you're telling me to come here, but this was so unfair. Don't you love me? How could you do this if you really love me?” Though you may be feeling these questions in a very specific context, these questions are not new or unique. You are not the only one to ask them. As part of our mortal experience, each of us reaches some experience where we ask those same questions. Is God truly fair? Does He really love us? Why does He allow such suffering? I have answered those questions many times in the past, but today, I don't want to answer those questions. Rather, I want to share something that the Spirit whispered to me recently. This is not an Article of Faith or excerpt from the Official Declarations, but I hope it soothes some of what people may feel when they struggle with the declarations. I want to share something from The Book of Mormon; Alma is speaking to the people of Gideon about the Savior. Alma 7:11-12 11 And he shall go forth, suffering pains and afflictions and temptations of every kind; and this that the word might be fulfilled which saith he will take upon him the pains and the sicknesses of his people. 12 And he will take upon him death, that he may loose the bands of death which bind his people; and he will take upon him their infirmities, that his bowels may be filled with mercy, according to the flesh, that he may know according to the flesh how to succor his people according to their infirmities. We read these verses at church this past week, and I had a thought occur to me. Perhaps I'm rather late in noticing this nuance, but that's okay. It struck me rather hard. Christ suffered for our sins. He paid for them. He died and was resurrected. This enabled us to return to live with our Heavenly Father. It saved us. But Christ also suffered for our infirmities. I always knew that this particular suffering happened with the atonement. He suffered for our pains and sicknesses just like He suffered for our sins, but that's two different ideas; isn't it? Did Christ have to suffer for our infirmities as part of the atonement? Was that absolutely necessary in order to help us return to live with God? Or did He just do it because He loves us and wants to be there for us? Did He really need to do that? Or did He simply want to? Could He have skipped that whole bit altogether and just brought us home at the end of the mortal experience? After looking into these questions a bit more, I found the talk from President Eyring that I referenced earlier. President Eyring's ideas are based on this phrase in the same chapter of Alma. Alma 7:13 Now the Spirit knoweth all things; nevertheless the Son of God suffereth according to the flesh… In response to the passage in Alma 7, President Eyring teaches, “He could have known how to succor us simply by revelation, but He chose to learn by His own personal experience.” He chose to suffer with you. He could have said, “Hey I know it feels unfair and unjust. I know it hurts, but we have to do this. Suffering, even unfairness, is so important to the plan, so important for your well-being and growth and glory. You need this. I'm sorry it's unfair, but you have to go through this.” And He does say those things (not in so many words, but He says it). And despite the fact that He already paid for your sins and despite all that it cost Him, He also says this, “I know exactly how you feel. Exactly how you feel. I have felt it too. I am here.” There are reasons for unfairness. There are ways to turn these painful moments into powerhouse experiences that glorify you. There are answers. But beyond that, there is an ultimate unfairness that was entered into voluntarily because of a deep love. Christ could have received revelation about how to comfort you. He had already paid the ultimate price, but that wasn't enough for Him. He wanted to take the journey with you. He wanted to feel it personally and walk with you, and when necessary, carry you. He wanted to. Because He loves you. He will make it up to you. He will one day answer all of your questions, but until then, rejoice that you are so beloved. I testify that Christ loves us. He loves us enough to pay the ultimate price for us to come down here, grow, and return home despite our mistakes. But beyond that, He loves us enough to go through what we go through in order to succor us through the entire experience. He is the very definition of above and beyond and it is because of how much He loves you, how much joy He draws from being your greatest Friend. What if the most “merry” Christmas song was born from the darkest moment in history? In this message, we uncover the forgotten story behind Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas and how it mirrors the emotional battles we still fight today; fear, grief, uncertainty, and the quiet hope that refuses to die. Through the lives of Mary and Joseph, we see that the Christmas story wasn't born in comfort, calm, or celebration, but in adversity, confusion, and impossible circumstances. Discover how hope shows up inside your struggle, why God doesn't remove adversity but reveals Himself through it, and how your “yes” to God, like Mary and Joseph, can carry you into a transformed future.

The Suffering of King David David's fugitive years under Saul (1 Sam 22–24) were not wasted time but a period of divine training and refinement. Though anointed king by Samuel (1 Sam 16:13), David was not yet ready to rule. God enrolled him in the school of suffering, isolation, and rejection to develop the inner character necessary for kingship. In the cave of Adullam, David found himself surrounded not by Israel's elite but by society's outcasts, “everyone who was in distress, and everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was discontented” (1 Sam 22:2). These men became his first followers, and God used them to teach David grace, compassion, and leadership under pressure. In the desert, David learned to live by divine viewpoint, to lean on God's sufficiency instead of human resources. His classroom was the wilderness; his lessons were hardship, endurance, and faith. Like Israel's desert testing, David's adversity exposed the contents of his soul and taught him to rest in God's perfect timing and immutable faithfulness (Deut 8:2). During this season, David composed two psalms that record the anguish and growth of his soul (Psa 57; 142). Psalm 57 was written “when he fled from Saul in the cave” (Psa 57:1a), likely at Adullam (1 Sam 22:1). Here, David's faith triumphed over fear. Surrounded by danger, David prayed, “Be gracious to me, O God… for my soul takes refuge in You; and in the shadow of Your wings I will take refuge until destruction passes by” (Psa 57:1b). Though hunted, he chose praise over panic, saying, “My heart is steadfast, O God… I will give thanks to You, O Lord, among the peoples” (Psa 57:7, 9). Adversity was used as a vehicle to expedite his growth, and David learned that security rests not in circumstances but in divine stability. Psalm 142, written later “when he was in the cave,” probably at En-gedi (1 Sam 24:1–3), reveals a soul exhausted by prolonged pressure. David wrote, “No one cares for my soul” (Psa 142:4), capturing the loneliness of exile and the silence of isolation. Yet even there, David refocused on the Lord, saying, “I cried out to You, O Lord; I said, ‘You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living'” (Psa 142:5). According to Ross, “The faithful must depend on the LORD completely when they are in grave difficulties because there is no one else who truly cares for them.”[1] When human support failed, divine grace sustained him. Through these psalms, we see David's soul pressed, purified, and reshaped into a man of faith. The results of that refinement soon became evident. Twice David was providentially placed in a position to kill Saul, first in the cave at En-gedi (1 Sam 24:1–7) and later at the hill of Hachilah (1 Sam 26:7–11). Both times David restrained himself, refusing to violate divine authority. David said, “The Lord forbid that I should stretch out my hand against the Lord's anointed” (1 Sam 24:6). This statement reveals a soul stabilized by Bible doctrine and governed by reverence for God's sovereignty. David refused to advance through human manipulation or self-promotion. His patience demonstrated that he had learned to wait for the Lord's vindication, as he said to Saul, “May the Lord judge between you and me… but my hand shall not be against you” (1 Sam 24:12). His restraint was the strength of humility developed through divine viewpoint thinking and prolonged testing (faith in action). These wilderness years, likely spanning seven to ten years, formed the core of David's divine preparation. Every deprivation was a test; every trial was a lesson in grace orientation, faith-rest, and obedience under pressure. When David finally ascended to the throne, he ruled as a man whose soul had been tempered by adversity. The Lord had fulfilled His purpose, confirming the principle He'd spoken to Israel, “He humbled you and let you be hungry… that He might make you understand that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by everything that proceeds out of the mouth of the Lord” (Deut 8:3). Thus, David's wilderness experience was a means of spiritual sanctification. The very afflictions that threatened his life became the instruments of his spiritual growth. By waiting on the Lord and trusting His timing, David demonstrated genuine humility and teachability, which are marks of a man after God's own heart (1 Sam 13:14; Acts 13:22). The Suffering of Daniel Daniel's story begins in the shadow of national tragedy. As a young man, likely in his mid-to-late teens, he was taken captive when Nebuchadnezzar besieged Jerusalem and carried many of Judah's nobility to Babylon (Dan 1:1–4). Torn from his homeland, stripped of freedom, and thrust into the heart of a pagan empire, Daniel entered a culture saturated with idolatry, sorcery, and political scheming. Babylon sought not only to enslave his body but to reprogram his mind, to erase his identity as a servant of the Lord and remake him into a loyal functionary of the empire. The king ordered that his name be changed, his education redirected, and his diet replaced with food from the royal table (Dan 1:5–7). Yet from the very beginning, “Daniel made up his mind that he would not defile himself” (Dan 1:8). Daniel was resolved to stand firm in his faith. He understood that his real allegiance was not to Babylon's king but to the God of heaven. In a foreign land, he refused to lose his spiritual identity. Steven R. Cook, D.Min., M.Div. [1] Allen P. In this episode of Healthy Mind, Healthy Life, host Sana sits down with psychotherapist, lecturer, writer, and former British Army soldier Liam Wakefield to unpack what really sits behind the phrase adversity builds character. This is a straight talking deep dive into childhood adversity, war, chronic illness, identity fracture, PTSD language, and the messy inner work it takes to rebuild a self that feels honest. Liam breaks down adversity driven growth, the role of narrative, inner parts, surrender, isolation, and depth without glamorizing suffering. About the Guest: Liam Wakefield is a psychotherapist, lecturer, and writer who previously spent 11 years as a British Army soldier. His life has moved through childhood adversity, dangerous deployments, a rare genetic condition, and a full career pivot into psychotherapy. He now runs clinical practices in Sussex and London, lectures on depth psychology and trauma, and writes about adversity driven growth, identity, and the internal architecture of the self. Key Takeaways : Adversity is inevitable suffering, not a virtue. It becomes a catalyst for growth only when we change our relationship to the wound instead of forcing quick positivity. The psyche often fractures under pressure. We build defensive structures to survive. Growth starts when we consciously meet those fractured parts instead of pretending to be “fine”. Surrender is different from giving up. Liam describes surrender as accepting that the current version of you cannot carry everything. That honest collapse creates space for a more aligned self to emerge. Identity is made of many parts. Soldier, carer, sick, strong, protector, vulnerable. Healing means learning which part is speaking, which part is in fear, and which part is capable of leading with integrity. Adversity can distort when it becomes your whole identity or a shield from accountability. It deepens character when it is integrated, not worshipped. Real growth is privilege coded to a degree. Community, resources, and psychological support matter. At the same time, isolation and disconnection are often bigger threats than the pain itself. The work is not to be grateful for suffering. The work is to use what happened as data, depth, and perspective without letting it define your future. Connect with the Guest: Listeners can connect with Liam Wakefield here: Website: https://www.liamjwakefield.com/ Social media: Instagram | Facebook Search for “Liam J Wakefield” on your preferred platform to find his professional updates, writing, and talks on adversity driven growth, psychotherapy, and identity. On this episode of Healthy Mind, Healthy Life, host Avik sits down with Dr. James Perdue, known globally as the Professor of Perseverance. At 19, one football hit dislocated three vertebrae in his neck, leaving him a quadriplegic and facing doctors who told his family he would be a burden and should be placed in a nursing home. Instead of collapsing, James built a new playbook for life. He breaks down his simple but uncompromising ABC framework for overcoming adversity. Accept adversity, Begin battling, Conquer the challenge. This is a direct conversation about grief, denial, rehab fatigue, and the moment he stopped chasing a “cure” and chose a future built on education, purpose and service. If you are navigating injury, disability, burnout or any life altering event, this episode gives you clear language, grounded mindset tools and a no excuses invitation to own your life narrative. About The Guest : Dr. James Perdue is a motivational speaker, best selling author, award winning educator, life coach and globally known as the Professor of Perseverance. After a catastrophic football injury left him a quadriplegic at 19, he spent years in hospitals, rehab centers and deep denial. Instead of accepting the role of “burden,” he built a life of impact through education, speaking and coaching. His core message. accept adversity, begin battling, conquer challenges. James now helps audiences worldwide move from victim mindset to active ownership of their future. Key Takeaways: Adversity does not need your approval. it needs your acceptance. James is clear that accepting a life changing injury does not mean liking it. It means acknowledging reality so you can take responsibility and move. His ABC framework is deliberately simple. A. Accept adversity. B. Begin battling. C. Conquer the challenge. If you can remember the alphabet up to C, you can remember the system. Acceptance is a process, not a moment. James spent about five years in denial and depression, yet he kept trying therapies, rehabs and strength work during that time. Progress and grief can coexist. After 18 different rehabs, he stopped chasing walking as the only “win” and shifted to education and life design. College, a degree and a future he could actually live became the new definition of success. Family mindset matters. his family chose a positive, solution oriented lens, doing hours of home physical therapy together instead of internalizing the “nursing home” recommendation. Ownership is non negotiable. once you are up, dressed and in your chair or body for the day, James insists it is your responsibility to use tools, the internet, communities and education to build the best life available to you. How Listeners Can Connect With Dr. James Perdue Dr. James keeps it simple. Search “Professor of Perseverance” on Google. Website You will find him on Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube and his own podcast under that name. What happens when you strip away titles, ego, and identity and choose to build a business and a life rooted in purpose instead? In this powerful episode of The Greatness Machine, Darius sits down with entrepreneur, coach, and aviation innovator Eric Farewell for a deeply honest conversation about identity, business, loss, self-worth, leadership, and the profound transformation that happens when you learn to be fully present. Eric opens up about rebuilding after everything fell apart, redefining success on his own terms, and discovering what truly matters beneath the surface of achievement. Together, Darius and Eric explore the emotional and psychological landscapes behind entrepreneurship and the unexpected clarity that comes when you separate who you are from what you do. In this episode, Darius and Eric will discuss: (00:00) Introduction and Banter (03:02) The Struggles of Writing and AI (05:57) Entrepreneurial Hustle: Past and Present (08:42) Adventures with Tucker Max (14:30) Finding Easy Relationships (17:29) Personal Stories and Reflections (29:23) Eric's Origin Story (30:15) From Aviation to Entrepreneurship (32:52) Life Lessons and Legacy (37:08) The Thrill of Flying (44:04) Transition to Paragliding (45:47) Building a Business with Purpose (48:36) Identity and Titles in Entrepreneurship (51:32) Finding Happiness in Adversity (55:05) The Royal Shift: A New Book (58:14) Mastermind and Community Building (01:01:43) Overcoming Imposter Syndrome Eric Farewell is a coach, author, and entrepreneur dedicated to helping leaders and entrepreneurs build businesses and lives aligned with their true purpose. After launching his first aviation business at 13 and speaking nationally before 20, Eric faced personal challenges, including a broken back, the death of his brother, and a near-collapse of his marriage, that reshaped his approach to life and leadership. Today, he owns multiple companies, is the author of Farewell to Normal, and guides others through personal reinvention, relational healing, and sustainable, mission-driven growth.
