Jodi O. Brown has lived the kind of story most of us hope we never face. What began as a picture-perfect life shifted overnight when she learned the symptoms she had been ignoring were signs of a brain tumor wrapped around her brainstem. One surgery became three. Five days in hospital became thirty-five in neurocritical care. The journey would grow to twenty-six surgeries, with complications that could have shattered anyone's sense of self. Instead, Jodi found a different path. She learned to take life one minute at a time, to find meaning inside the mess, and to choose the next small step when the finish line felt impossible to see. In this conversation on Becoming Unshakeable, Jodi introduces the concept of anti-fragility, illustrating its application to human life as well as to systems and economies. Resilience helps us bounce back. Anti-fragility enables us to grow stronger in the face of stressors, setbacks, and uncertainty. Jodi explains how she closed the door on one life and opened another with new rules, new rhythms, and a daily practice of grace with deadlines. Feel the pain, name it, and then set a time to stand up again, even if the first step is tiny. Sometimes, it feels like committing to attending a class where you cut paper shapes, because having someone to be accountable to can pull you through when your willpower runs dry. We also step into a new season unfolding in real time. Jodi became an empty nester yesterday. The quiet is startling. She walks us through the emotions of a house that suddenly sounds different and the choice to reimagine marriage, travel, and daily rituals with hope. Her definition of becoming unshakeable fits the heart of this show. Adversity is not an interruption to your story. It is your story. The practices you bring to ordinary days prepare you for the extraordinary ones. Faith underpins her steadiness. Hope keeps her moving. She shares lessons from a childhood shaped by leadership teachings and a father who modeled genuine care, the kind you feel when a leader knows your name and your story. Every interaction is an opportunity to change a life. That line threads through everything here. It is the reason people follow, the reason cultures feel safe, and the reason care will never go out of style. If you are barely holding on, Jodi's message is simple and actionable. Permit yourself to mourn what you lost. Set a clear deadline to rise. Make one small commitment to another human and keep it. One step can change the direction of a hard season. One light can change the way a room feels. Jodi chooses to be that light, and she invites you to do the same. Stay to the end for a generous gift. Jodi offers a complimentary e-copy of her memoir, “The Sun Still Shines,” for listeners who email her. It is an honest account of pain and purpose, and a reminder that even in the hardest chapters, the light is still there, waiting to be seen.

Acts 4:23-37 reveals that success in adversity comes not from waiting for trials to pass but from seeking the Lord, resting in His sovereignty, and praying for boldness even when afraid. When threatened by authorities, the early church didn't pray for comfort or revenge but for courage to continue speaking God's Word. Their faith was proven genuine through selfless living, biblical unity, and radical generosity—demonstrating that a ground-shaking God enables His people to remain unshakable.

In this episode of Grow a Small Business, host Troy Trewin interviews Jay Sapovits, founder of Ink Stores, who shares how he transformed his business from a retail storefront into a thriving on-demand swag company during COVID. Starting with $300K in the first year and growing to mid-seven figures, Jay reveals the pivotal mindset shifts, the importance of resilience, and how consistency fueled growth. He also discusses scaling a team of nearly 30, building a strong culture, and why creativity and adaptability remain essential in the $27B U.S. merchandise industry. Why would you wait any longer to start living the lifestyle you signed up for? Balance your health, wealth, relationships and business growth. And focus your time and energy and make the most of this year. Let's get into it by clicking here. Troy delves into our guest's startup journey, their perception of success, industry reconsideration, and the pivotal stress point during business expansion. They discuss the joys of small business growth, vital entrepreneurial habits, and strategies for team building, encompassing wins, blunders, and invaluable advice. And a snapshot of the final five Grow A Small Business Questions: What do you think is the hardest thing in growing a small business? According to Jay Sapovits, the hardest thing in growing a small business is consistency. He explained that no matter how tough things get—whether you're “kicked in the teeth on Tuesday”—you have to show up again on Wednesday and keep going. Consistency, even through setbacks, is what makes growth possible. What's your favorite business book that has helped you the most? Jay Sapovits said his favorite business book is “How to Become a Rainmaker” by Jeffrey Fox. He called it “unequivocally, the best business book ever written” because it breaks down sales into simple, powerful concepts in short, easy-to-digest chapters that serve as a lifelong reference. Are there any great podcasts or online learning resources you'd recommend to help grow a small business? While Jay Sapovits didn't name specific favorites, several great resources align with his focus on resilience, consistency, and growth. Podcasts like The How of Business, Masters of Scale, The $100 MBA Show, and The Disruptive Entrepreneur offer practical strategies and inspiring stories from entrepreneurs. Online learning platforms such as Coursera, Udemy, and LinkedIn Learning provide valuable training in sales, leadership, and team building—skills Jay emphasizes as essential. He also highlights the importance of community, so joining mastermind groups or business forums can help small business owners share challenges, learn from peers, and stay consistent in their growth journey. What tool or resource would you recommend to grow a small business? One tool Jay Sapovits says he “can't live without” is simple: email. Being super responsive, replying fast, keeping communication tight — that core tool / habit has been critical in how he grows trust, closes sales, and stays connected with clients. What advice would you give yourself on day one of starting out in business? If Jay Sapovits could give himself advice on day one of starting his business, he would say: “Take it easy on yourself.” He explained that his high expectations often created unnecessary stress, and he later learned to manage them better. He also emphasized that “comparison is the thief of joy,” urging entrepreneurs to stay focused on their own journey, support their peers, and not get distracted by competitors or external factors they can't control. Book a 20-minute Growth Chat with Troy Trewin to see if you qualify for our upcoming course. Don't miss out on this opportunity to take your small business to new heights! Enjoyed the podcast? Quotable quotes from our special Grow A Small Business podcast guest: Consistency is the only thing that matters—you have to show up every day, no matter what – Jay Sapovits Success is found in the daily grind, not in a single moment of arrival – Jay Sapovits Comparison is the thief of joy; keep your head down and focus on your own business – Jay Sapovits
