136: John Bucher: Telling A Better Story

The Sacred Speaks

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 15, 2026 77:55

In this episode of The Sacred Speaks, host Dr. John W Price sits down with mythologist and storyteller Dr. John Bucher, Executive Director of the Joseph Campbell Foundation, to explore how story functions as a living force that shapes our lives, culture, and sense of meaning. They trace John's early "graduate degree in storytelling" in a small Texas video store, move through themes like the quest to come home, reconciliation with the father, and the "magical orphan," and show how our favorite films reveal the deep mythic patterns we're unconsciously living. The conversation dives into archetypes, subtext, AI as a new cultural story, the loss of shared myths in a hyper-individualized media landscape, and the possibility of a "collective heroic journey" where groups answer a shared call of desperation rather than a single hero saving the day. John also offers very practical tools for "telling a better story" in our own lives, from changing our information diet to small daily rituals that reorient us toward hope, connection, and agency. Key Takeaways: John Bucher: Telling A Better Story Stories and myths are the "operating system" of the human mind, shaping how we make sense of everything from traffic to transcendence. What truly draws us into stories is not plot but theme, like coming home or reconciling with the father. Our favorite movies quietly reveal our core genres, themes, and unresolved psychological material. We are losing shared cultural stories, which contributes to loneliness and fragmentation. Finding a "better story" starts locally: in our media diet, daily practices, and small collective actions. What happens when a legendary horror franchise finds its footing by looking backward? This week, we dive into Resident Evil Requiem, exploring why its tight, 10-hour dual-protagonist campaign is a masterclass in modern survival horror—and a perfect fit for gamers with a busy schedule. We also strap on our hover-skates for a review of High on Life 2, discussing how Squanch Games is navigating its new era and whether the controversial new traversal mechanics help or hinder the "Big Pharma" satire. Then, we shift gears to the extraction shooter wars. We share our hands-on impressions from the Marathon Server Slam, questioning if Bungie's bold, neon-soaked UI is a work of art or a usability nightmare compared to the more grounded Arc Raiders. Finally, we trace the 8-year secret history of Valve's Deadlock—from its "Neon Prime" sci-fi roots to its current status as a Steam chart-topper—and explain why this MOBA-shooter hybrid is poised to dominate the industry in 2026. In this episode of The Sacred Speaks, Dr. John Price sits down with Molly Carroll, therapist, writer, and host of the podcast Cracking Open, for a searching conversation about intuition, rupture, and the cost of inner honesty. Molly is the author of Trust Within: Letting Intuition Lead and Cracking Open. Her work grows out of lived dislocation, from moments when the life she was building no longer aligned with what she knew in her body. Together, John and Molly explore intuition not as a slogan or guarantee, but as a capacity that often becomes audible only after something in our lives refuses to continue as planned. The conversation moves through engagement endings, grief, codependency, therapy, and the subtle tension between anxiety and knowing. It considers whether intuition steadies us or unsettles us, and whether following it restores coherence or quietly dismantles the identities we once relied upon. Rather than offering formulaic guidance, this episode invites listeners into a more honest and discerning relationship with their own interior life. Key Takeaways: Molly Carroll describes the first “white picket fence dwindling moment” when she realized the life she planned (including an engagement) wasn't the life she truly wanted. The conversation frames intuition as a lived capacity shaped by rupture, grief, and risk rather than a simple gift or guarantee. The hosts emphasize integration of experiences—personal, spiritual, and professional—rather than retreating from discomfort after rupture. Molly recounts leaving an engagement with a fiancé visa in play, choosing honesty with herself over social expectations. The interview situates therapy and healing arts as pathways to listen to deep truths, even when those truths disrupt established life scripts Time-stamps (00:00) Introduction and Guest Overview (00:41) Housekeeping and Announcements (02:44) Introducing Molly Carroll (04:31) Molly's Journey and Intuition (07:16) Cracking Open Moments (11:28) The Role of Intuition and Personal Growth (22:53) Victimhood and Personal Responsibility (33:01) Connection and Compassion (43:05) Exploring Emotional Expression (43:53) The Healing Power of Tears (46:32) Creating Space for Vulnerability (49:20) Understanding Codependency (52:57) Intuition vs. Codependency (54:41) The Role of Intuition in Decision Making (01:08:56) Money, Worth, and Intuition (01:18:17) Concluding Thoughts and Reflections Connect with Molly Website https://molly-carroll.com/about/ Book https://www.amazon.com/Cracking-Open-2nd-Molly-Carroll/dp/1320934374?keywords=cracking+open&qid=1572021083&sr=8-1 Website for John http://www.drjohnwprice.com WATCH: YouTube for The Sacred Speaks https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOAuksnpfht1udHWUVEO7Rg Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thesacredspeaks/ @thesacredspeaks Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thesacredspeaks/ Brought to you by: https://www.thecenterforhas.com Theme music provided by: http://www.modernnationsmusic.com

KOC's JJ McCarthy Comments and Top QB Options Ranked — Tyler Forness and Producer Dave discuss Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell and exec Rob Brzezinski's recent comments, debating whether the team is still fully sold on JJ McCarthy or whether O'Connell is feeling pressure to get the quarterback decision right. They then break down trade speculation connecting Minnesota to Colts QB Anthony Richardson, citing past Vikings interest in Richardson and arguing his elite traits make him a high-upside target despite injuries and accuracy issues; Tyler suggests a possible deal involving pick 97 and a fifth for Richardson plus an early fourth. We also check in on the "Indie Renaissance" with the undercover alien chaos of Roadside Research and the friendship-ending, $8 orbital-laser mayhem of Super Battle Golf. Then, we shift to the "Big Two" and the strange decisions coming out of the corporate boardrooms. With Phil Spencer and Sarah Bond departing Xbox and Bluepoint Games officially shuttered by Sony, the leadership of console gaming is in a total state of flux. Why is PlayStation pivoting to a stylized Horizon live-service game that fans didn't ask for? Can the "New Guard" at Microsoft find a soul for Xbox? It's a discussion about creative risks, corporate safe-bets, and why the most exciting things in gaming right now aren't coming from the names you expect. In this RTB and Novel Dialogue episode from 2021, Helen Garner sits down with John and Elizabeth McMahon, a distinguished scholar of Australian literature. Helen's novels range from the anti-patriarchy exuberance of Monkey Grip (1977) to the heartbreaking mortality at the heart of The Spare Room (2008). She has also authored a slew of nonfiction, plus screenplays for Jane Campion's Two Friends and Gillian Armstrong's wonderfully Garneresque The Last Days of Chez Nous. After a reading from John's favorite, The Children's Bach, the trio discusses Garner's capacity for cutting and cutting, creating resonant, thought-inducing gaps. Garner connects that taste for excision, perhaps paradoxically, to her tendency to accumulate scraps, bits and pieces of life. She relates her father's restlessness to her own life-total of houses inhabited (27). “Why wouldn't I write about households?” asks Helen, “They're just so endlessly interesting.” Who shaped her writing? Raymond Carver: packed with power, but the pages white with omissions and excisions. Helen offers an anecdote about her own pruning that ends with her “ankle-deep in adverbs.” That's how to escape the “fat writing” that stems for distrust of the reader. She thoughtfully compares the practical virtues of keeping notebooks for the “music” of everyday life to the nightly process of diary-writing (more analytical). John raises the question of pervasive musical metaphors in Helen's writing, and she reports her passion for “boring pieces” and the “formal” side of Bach, which makes a listener feel that there is such a thing as meaning. “There's something about shaping a sentence, too, which can be musical.” Mentioned in the Episode Marilynne Robinson, Housekeeping (the fixed people and the wandering people), Gilead, Home, The West Wing (yes, the TV show! Helen watched it during lockdown when she couldn't bear fiction…) Raymond Carver‘s minimalist fiction (his first collection) Tess Gallagher (as writer and as Carver's editor) Willa Cather, “The Novel Démeublé” (1922; on how to un-furnish fiction, leaving it an empty room) Ernest Hemingway, A Moveable Feast Sigmund Freud on “the day's residue” (e.g. in The Interpretation of Dreams, 1900) George Eliot, Quarry for Middlemarch Listen to Episode Learn more about your ad choices.
