Marie Montessori said “The work of education is divided between the teacher and the environment.” It's clear to me that both play an integral role in our development and as I look back over my life I can notice where the environment and my settings contributed as much if not more to my growth. Like now. Literally like right now. Like this podcast environment, its changing me for the better. And today’s guest, Greg Pearlman has totally changed me for the better. Greg believes in the power of the environment and focusing our mindset on the power of learning opportunities, not failures because they are different and how you package them matters. Greg is the Chief Success Officer at a super cool education startup called Betabox and he believes hands-on, experiential learning is the missing ingredient required to prepare students for the complex, uncertain future before us all. He is on a mission to bring technology to more students in an inclusive and accessible way which focuses on the environment in a new and modern way. And he’s also on a mission to continually improve himself and his environment by mindfully navigating his personal connections and relationships. And on this episode, in THIS environment, with me as the ready student, Greg, the teacher, appeared. Make sure you stay til the end to hear the action item I’m challenging you with. It’s a good one.
Educating the Workforce In this episode, Tom and Sean discuss: The importance of hands-on, accessible learning. How engineering is similar to sales. How businesses can benefit from an educated workforce. Why having a sales process can make or break your company. Key Takeaways: Don't try to trick the magician. Things are never as bad or as good as they may seem. Separate your own self worth from your company's. Will a present failure matter down the road? "Don’t trick the magician…that’s so important in sales. When you’re working with other salespeople or just other people who’ve been in the industry for years…don’t try to use a sales tactic that’s in all the books that they’re also reading. Just be authentic and sell a product you believe in." - Sean Maroni After studying mechanical engineering at NC State, Sean decided to leave the path of the standard engineering job and start Betabox. As a kid, he was constantly learning by doing and working on projects of all types. Sean realized that he learned the most when he took his education into his own hands and figured things out in order to make progress in projects. But he was also fortunate, having a Dad that exposed him to concepts or engineering, buying him rockets and legos, etc. He started Betabox to bring the power of guided hands on learning to young people everywhere, regardless of geography. In this episode of Tales from the PROS, I chat with CEO and Founder, Sean Maroni about how and why he started Betabox and reinventing experiential learning for students in schools and universities, and essentially creating an entirely unique "field trip" experience. Sean Maroni founded Betabox in 2015 and has grown the company since its inception into a largely spoken about and funded approach to the new way of hands-on learning. Betabox was also recently a finalist at the 2017 NC Tech Awards for Most Innovative Workplace. Sean and I discuss entrepreneurship, startups, funding, experiential marketing, hands-on learning, education, mobile technology, motives, struggles and obstacles, the Raleigh tech scene, and much more.
