Why Motives Matter: The Heart Behind Generosity with Pierce Taylor Hibbs

Jesus taught that the true measure of giving isn't the size of the gift but the heart behind it. Generosity begins long before anything leaves our hands. It starts with what we treasure, love, and worship.Few writers explore the inner life of faith as clearly as Pierce Taylor Hibbs, senior writer at Westminster Theological Seminary and the author of more than twenty books on Christian living. In today's episode, he joins us to invite believers to examine not just the act of giving but the spiritual forces beneath it.In a recent article for the latest issue of Faithful Steward magazine titled "Motive Is Everything," he draws from counselor David Powlison to explain that there's always a “sun” around which the planets of our lives turn. We're always pulled toward something—success, security, comfort, pleasure, affirmation, or money—because we're created to worship. The question isn't whether we worship, but what we worship. When the created things we enjoy begin to occupy the center, Scripture calls it idolatry. Money is especially powerful in this way because it overlaps with pleasure and power. It promises control over life and the ability to enjoy it—two desires that easily eclipse our devotion to God if left unchecked. To explore the heart behind generosity, Hibbs points to one of Scripture's most striking stories: the widow's offering in Mark 12. We don't know her name, but Jesus knew her heart. While others gave large sums, she dropped two small coins into the temple treasury—an amount no one else would have celebrated. Yet Jesus did. He saw not the amount but the motive. That's the point: Giving is never merely transactional. It's deeply spiritual. It reveals what we value most.Hibbs notes that Scripture treats the heart—the lebab—as the control center of our lives. The Dutch theologian Herman Bavinck wrote that the heart is the source of both our rational and volitional life. It shapes what we think, desire, choose, and pursue. Outward actions are merely the visible tip of an iceberg. Beneath them lies motive.Jesus makes the same point in Luke 6:45: “The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good…for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.” Our generosity flows from whatever we treasure most. If we treasure God, giving becomes worship. If we treasure self, giving becomes calculation, obligation, or strategy. This reframes generosity. It's not just about allocating money. It's about the posture of the soul. It includes time, attention, hospitality, compassion, and quiet acts of service—not only dollars in a plate. So how do we cultivate godly motives? Hibbs suggests beginning with Scripture—especially the Gospels—and watching how Jesus treats people. Jesus continually draws attention to what's happening beneath the surface: motives, desires, and loves. We don't wait for perfectly pure motives to give—we'll never act if we do. But we do allow the Spirit to search us, shape us, and re-center our hearts on Christ, the God who gives first so that we might become givers. On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:My son owns a rental property in Baltimore, but the tenant hasn't paid rent for two months. This has happened before, and it's putting financial strain on his family. We're debating whether to sell the house, but it would need some work. If we keep it, are there any tax deductions or benefits since the tenant isn't paying? What should my son do?I'm 64 and still working full time, but I'd like to withdraw money from my 401(k). Since I'm over 59½, can I do that without the 10% penalty even though I'm still employed? What should I know about taxes and plan rules? My wife is retired and in her 60s, but I'm not yet at retirement age. We're both on the mortgage. Can we still get a reverse mortgage, or do both borrowers have to meet the age requirement?Resources Mentioned:Faithful Steward: FaithFi's Quarterly Magazine (Become a FaithFi Partner)Motive Is Everything by Pierce Taylor Hibbs (Faithful Steward Issue 4 Article)The Book of Giving: How the God Who Gives Can Make Us Givers by Pierce Taylor HibbsOur Ultimate Treasure: A 21-Day Journey to Faithful StewardshipWisdom Over Wealth: 12 Lessons from Ecclesiastes on MoneyLook At The Sparrows: A 21-Day Devotional on Financial Fear and AnxietyRich Toward God: A Study on the Parable of the Rich FoolFind a Certified Kingdom Advisor (CKA)FaithFi App Remember, you can call in to ask your questions every workday at (800) 525-7000. In this message, Jesus offers a practical and challenging way to deal with conflict without destroying relationships. Instead of avoidance, gossip, or escalation, He calls us toward honesty, accountability, and grace. The message also confronts a hard truth: refusing to give grace after receiving it leads to bitterness and broken connection. We discover that God cares about the heart. God wants us to love Him, value Him, and esteem Him above all things. When we serve the Lord out of sincere hearts, wanting to please Him, and wanting to give Him the glory, he rewards us only a loving Heavenly Father can.Main Points:1. In Jesus' great Sermon on the Mount he speaks to the heart of what we do for God, not just what we do for God. We learn that it's not just the act of serving God that pleases the Lord, but our motives matter to Him as well.2. I believe this is one of the things that distinguishes Christianity from every other world religion. You see every world religion is about what you do. It's about your work. Salvation is earned by your diligence to hard work and keeping rules. 3. In Christianity, it's not that Jesus doesn't care what we do, but he is more interested in those intentions that are hidden from human eyes. He's after our heart. Today's Scripture Verses:Matthew 6:1 - “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.”Matthew 5:16 - “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”Psalm 26:2 - “Test me, Lord, and try me, examine my heart and my mind.”Quick Links:Donate to support this podcastLeave a review on Apple PodcastsGet a copy of The 5 Minute Discipleship JournalConnect on SocialJoin The 5 Minute Discipleship Facebook Group

Summary In this episode, Andy talks with Martin Dubin, psychologist, former CEO, executive coach, and author of Blindspotting: How to See What's Holding You Back as a Leader. Marty brings a rare combination of clinical insight and real-world leadership experience to a topic that affects every project manager and frontline leader: the blindspots that quietly shape our behavior, decisions, and impact. Together, the discussion explores how motives often drive our actions without us realizing it, why strengths can become liabilities when overused, and how emotion acts as one of the most powerful and least discussed forces in leadership. Marty explains his layered model of blindspots, including identity, motive, traits, emotion, and behavior, and shows how leaders can build awareness without trying to "fix" who they are. You will also hear practical guidance on creating a simple change plan that actually sticks, using small behavioral tweaks, prompts, and accountability rather than dramatic personal transformation. The conversation closes with thoughtful examples of how blindspotting can improve not only leadership at work, but relationships at home as well. If you want practical insight into leading with greater self-awareness, emotional range, and intentional growth, this episode is for you! Sound Bites "The hardest part of leadership is not managing others. It's managing ourselves." "Your strengths work for you most of the time, which is why it's so hard to see when they start working against you." "You know, whatever it is, it's usually invisible to us until someone or something forces it into view." "Now, if you put the modifier TOO in front of it, what happens when you're TOO confident? What happens when you're TOO organized? What happens when you're TOO creative?" "What do they tell you? You are too...." "Motives constrict under stress, and that's often when blindspots do the most damage." "Traits don't need to be changed. They need to be regulated." "Emotion is one of the most powerful tools leaders have, whether they use it intentionally or not." "Real change comes from small behavioral tweaks, not personality transformation." Episode 370 of RevolutionZ mainly continues our sequence of excerpts from the forthcoming The Wind Cries Freedom's Oral History of the Next American Revolution.  However, before doing so, it takes up various reactions I encountered to an article I wrote titled "Chomsky Reassessed." The followup discussion here raises some more general concerns and further ideas bearing on issues of "cancellation." Internal movement differences, arguments, and even accusations can force a movement to constructively self examine and grow, or can fracture it. What damage is done when outrage outruns evidence, when cancel culture and circular firing squads turn activism into spectacle and drive away the very allies we need? What dynamics play out? When do they arise? How do they gain life and spread? How do they involve us and what might we do to address them? After that rather substantial introductory section, this episode continues into a new oral history excerpt about how to build movement power and cohesion in which Bertrand Jagger and Lydia Lawrence further chart their respective journeys from atomized  into  systemic thinking. They describe their attraction to self-management as proportionate say, to equity as pay for effort and sacrifice, and to an economy redesigned to eliminate not only rule by owners but rule by the often-ignored coordinator class.Bert takes us inside the illusion of choice that we often feel, where markets script our consumption and work options and productivity gains vanish into someone else's ledger. He traces the subtle hierarchies that reappear in movement meetings, media, and campaigns when movement roles unintentionally subvert movement aspirations. He explains why balanced jobs, transparent information, and participatory planning weren't rhetorical add-ons to RPS but at the core of its approaches. Lydia widens the frame to kinship and culture. She shows how hierarchies in patriarchal families, schooling, and media bleed into the workplace—and vice versa--how class hierarchies in turn contour kinship and culture. She shows why to change one domain of activity without changing the others reroutes power rather than dissolves it.Along the way, we revisit a cautionary note from Bob Dylan—what happens when movements punish nuance and reward heat—and we ask how to create spaces where disagreement refines strategy instead of ending careers and silencing conversation. So this episode is mostly about how two people were attracted to and navigated movement design, class analysis that extends  beyond owners and workers, and turning diverse values into effective daily practice all in the new movement they became part of, the movement for a revolutionary participatory society. Can their remembrances provide use insights in our time and our place about attaining a clear, rigorous path forward? Listen, and perhaps share with a friend who's organizing something big or small. Then I hope you will leave a comment saying what strikes you as useful and revealing, and what doesn't.Support the show

If you ask most Christians why they want success in business, they'll say something like, "to make a lot of money, so I can extend the kingdom of God." This is a noble motivation, but most Christians who say this are lying to themselves, because they believe God would not approve of their true motive. Here's the problem: when you lie to yourself about why you want success, you won't be successful. Success is built on true motives. And guess what, if your true motive is to make a lot of money to have an enjoyable life for you and your family, God is cool with that. Why Become a Disciple Maker: Insights from Jim Putman, Dr. Coleman, and More In this video, leaders in the disciple making movement participate in a forum to discuss the essential question: why become a disciple maker? Jim Putman opens with a deep dive into the motives behind disciple making and challenges the conventional view of tying disciple-making to church growth. Instead, he emphasizes the importance of a more profound, relational approach where the focus is on spiritual maturity and following Christ wholeheartedly, even when it might not lead to church growth. The discussion extends into practical insights on creating a culture of disciple-making, highlighting the significance of transparency and intentionality in relationships. Prominent voices like Bill Hull, Dr. Robert Coleman, and Daniel Im contribute their perspectives. Bill Hull underscores the necessity of investing in the right people, while Dr. Coleman points out the simplicity of following Jesus' example. Ariana Rimsson shares her personal experiences and advice on how to take intentional steps to disciple others, even if one has never been discipled themselves. The forum also includes a celebration of disciple-making giants, with Bill Hull receiving the Robert Coleman Disciple Maker Award for his lifetime commitment to Jesus' methods. Key themes covered include the importance of relational disciple-making, the challenges of being authentic and transparent, and the critical role of disciple-makers in a world increasingly obsessed with self. This video aims to inspire pastors and ministry leaders to embrace the call to make disciples deeply and authentically, replicating the life-on-life model exemplified by Jesus.  Check out Discipleship.org for resources on disciple-making: https://discipleship.org/resources/  Key Takeaways  00:00 Introduction: The Importance of Disciple Making 07:40 The Great Commission and Making Disciples 09:45 Personal Stories and Testimonies 14:55 The Need for Relational Discipleship 21:44 Practical Takeaways and Reflections 36:43 The Heart of Jesus' Ministry 37:25 Motives in Discipleship 39:54 Creating a Culture of Disciple Making 43:52 Life-on-Life Discipleship 48:56 Honesty and Transparency in Discipleship 53:23 The Disciple Maker Assessment 01:11:07 Closing Remarks and Reflections Stay Informed - Get our newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hPViAr Title: Why Become a Disciple Maker | Jim Putman See below for a longer description: In Jim Putman's enlightening speech, he delves deep into the essential question, "Why become a disciple maker?" He challenges the audience by reframing the question to "Why wouldn't you be a disciple maker?" Putman emphasizes that disciple making should not be viewed as merely a church growth strategy but as a profound spiritual calling rooted in the gospel of Jesus Christ. He addresses the popular misconception that disciple making guarantees church growth, clarifying that the true essence is spiritual maturity and obedience to Christ, which may not always align with numerical growth. Putman underscores the reality that the gospel's message of self-denial and daily cross-bearing is often unpopular in American culture, leading to a potential decline in church attendance when it's preached authentically. He cautions that many churchgoers might leave when confronted with the true demands of discipleship, particularly those who attend church for superficial reasons like seeking personal gain or social approval. A significant portion of his talk focuses on the characteristics of a mature disciple. Putman describes a mature disciple as someone continually growing in obedience and being transformed to resemble Jesus Christ. This transformation involves loving God with all one's heart, soul, mind, and strength, and loving one's neighbor as oneself. He critiques the shallow understanding of discipleship that equates it to mere knowledge accumulation, explaining that true discipleship is relational and rooted in love. Moreover, Putman discusses the importance of having a common language and definition within disciple making movements, referencing Jesus' invitation in Matthew 4:19 to "Come, follow me, and I will make you fishers of men." He explains that disciple makers are those who follow Jesus, are changed by Jesus, and commit to Jesus' mission. This mission includes evangelizing, teaching, and nurturing new disciples to maturity so they, in turn, can make disciples. Putman shares a personal anecdote about his son, illustrating the profound impact someone can make by reaching out to love and disciple others. In conclusion, Putman appeals to the audience's sense of love and obedience to God as the primary motives for making disciples. He discards the notion of doing it for rewards or recognition, centering the practice in genuine care for others' spiritual well-being and growth in Christ. Ghislaine Maxwell's latest habeas corpus petition appears less a genuine attempt to overturn her conviction than a strategic maneuver aimed at slowing the release of potentially damaging records tied to the broader Epstein network. Legal experts note that Maxwell, who has long understood the improbability of securing her freedom, stands to benefit not from exoneration but from procedural delays that could obstruct transparency efforts. By filing an appeal that is unlikely to succeed, Maxwell triggers a pause in disclosures and creates additional hurdles for investigators, effectively buying time for the political figures and institutions whose interests intersect with her own. The move aligns with a longstanding pattern in which Maxwell leverages the legal system not to challenge evidence, but to strategically obscure it.Observers argue that these delays also serve the Trump administration, which has faced scrutiny over its handling of issues related to Epstein and Maxwell. By benefiting from slowed document releases and postponed court actions, the administration avoids renewed public attention on past associations, photos, and communications that have fueled political controversy. While officials publicly distance themselves from Maxwell, the timing of her legal filings has repeatedly coincided with periods in which transparency efforts intensified, prompting accusations that her appeals function as informal buffers for those who stand to be implicated by unsealed records. Together, Maxwell's procedural maneuvers and the administration's apparent reliance on these delays have raised concerns of a broader effort to manage fallout rather than confront the full extent of the Epstein-Maxwell network's influence.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.com

In this episode of The Winston Marshall Show, I sit down with Bob of Speakers' Corner, one of Britain's most recognisable street preachers and Christian debaters, for a provocative conversation about faith, free speech, and the future of Britain's identity.Bob recounts how a Muslim once tried to convert him to Islam, an encounter that instead led him to Christianity and set him on a mission to defend the faith at London's Hyde Park, one of the last true bastions of free speech in the UK. He discusses the rise of Islamist intimidation at Speakers' Corner, from stabbings and arson attacks to police indifference and media silence, and why he believes Britain is now a post-free speech country. We explore Bob's vision of a Christian nation, his critique of liberal secularism, and his warning against both Islamism and ethno-nationalism, which he sees as twin dangers to the soul of Britain. He argues that only a return to Judeo-Christian values, the foundation of British law and morality, can rescue the country from cultural decay.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------To see the extended and ad free interview click here: https://open.substack.com/pub/winstonmarshall/p/confronting-islam-and-reviving-britains?r=18lfab&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=true-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------FOLLOW ME ON SOCIAL MEDIA:Substack: https://www.winstonmarshall.co.uk/X: https://twitter.com/mrwinmarshallInsta: https://www.instagram.com/winstonmarshallLinktree: https://linktr.ee/winstonmarshall----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Chapters 00:00 Introduction 01:31 Bob of Speakers' Corner03:39 What is Speakers' Corner06:23 Challenges and Motives at Speakers' Corner 13:21 Bob's Conversion and Evangelism18:10 Christian Nationalism and Free Speech25:07 The Role of Christianity in Politics36:18 The Patriot Movement and Christianity50:38 The Importance of Judeo-Christian Tradition52:54 Final Thoughts Hosted on Acast. Text us your questions! Our friend Jeff Cook—writer, podcaster, and Enneagram systems thinker—is back with us to discuss his recent book (volume 1 of a series because of course it is): about the Enneagram. (See our first conversation from S03E26 here.)Jeff explains how the Enneagram names the “why” beneath our choices, conflicts, faith, and love. Randy shares how the framework has sharpened his self-awareness and softened his edges. And Kyle characteristically pushes back a bit on evidence, parsimony, and the risk of thick theories outrunning data. The result is a lively, generous exploration that treats the Enneagram as a language for motive rather than a box for behavior.Jeff starts by laying a foundation—head, heart, and body—as an ancient scaffold echoed in philosophy, spirituality, and clinical practice. From there, he maps how core desires show up under stress and security and why the hardest question, “What do you want?”, may be the doorway to identity and change. We pressure-test the model where it matters most: relationships. Randy gets a live read on Eight-with-Six dynamics—strength meeting vigilance, autonomy meeting reassurance—and why "body types" experience control and agency in ways that feel physical, not theoretical. We also tackle the cottage-industry problem, academic standards, and how to treat the Enneagram like a Wittgensteinian ladder: use it when it helps, set it aside when it doesn't.If you've been burned by rigid labels, you'll appreciate our insistence on flexibility, nuance, and practical outcomes. If you're curious about real-life gains, Jeff's focus on gifts will resonate: name what you uniquely bring—clarity, courage, steadiness, empathy—and aim it outward. Useful, not ultimate. Humble, not hazy.Enjoy the conversation? We communicate to connect with others. My interest then is considering how much of my communication actually results in true connection. I have a world expert with me. Charles Duhigg. How Proverbs 21, Inchstones, and God-Centered Friendship Build Real Strength, Open Doors, and Transform Your LeadershipIn this episode, we break down Proverbs 21, godly friendship, and the Inchstones approach to daily wisdom, uncovering why the only way “in” is never through friendship itself—but by becoming the kind of friend God can use. These first two sentences are keyword-rich to help listeners searching for Proverbs 21 meaning, biblical leadership, Christian friendship, spiritual growth, and godly wisdom find exactly what they're looking for.I've learned this the hard way: when I tried to enter rooms through friendship, I was denied… but when I focused on becoming the right kind of friend, God opened every door I didn't even know to knock on. Relationships have torn down walls, shattered barriers, and moved mountains in my life—and maybe that's God's not-so-subtle way of keeping me grateful. Or maybe it's Him showing me—demanding of me—that true greatness is found in being the friend I'm so often searching for.Proverbs 21 flips the script:Stop hunting for the friend who will open doors.Become the friend whose motives please God… and watch Him handle the rest.In this episode, we unpack the traits Proverbs 21 tells us are non-negotiables for a great friend and a great leader:Give God your heart — right motives matter more than sacrifice.Let go of envy, pride, and ego — they don't work. Ever.Choose diligence and patience — they build unstoppable momentum.Speak life — it's an unfair advantage in a negative world.Pursue godly gain — it's more valuable than worldly success.Pay attention — awareness brings wisdom.Be generous — it saves you when you need it most.Do what's right — righteousness brings joy.Honor the future — wisdom sees beyond the moment.Love well — prosperity and honor follow those who lead with love.Strength comes from wisdom — not force.Listen fast, speak slow — the wise reverse the natural impulse.Prepare fully — but remember: the victory is always the Lord's.These traits transform friendships, leadership, business, family… your whole life. But Proverbs 21 closes with a warning: none of them work if you don't spend time with God.This episode will challenge you, stretch you, and give you practical Inchstones—small, quiet, daily moves—that build a life God can use and friendships that change the world. If you're ready to become the friend you've been searching for, this conversation will hit home.If this episode encouraged you, subscribe, review, and share the podcast to help spread the message. All links are right here: https://solo.to/kellycardenas

Proverbs 16:26–28 reveals three powerful forces shaping human conduct. Hunger drives honest labor, pushing a man forward by necessity and diligence. But the ungodly dig up evil with intentional effort, and their lips burn like fire—words capable of igniting destruction. The whisperer quietly sows strife, separating even the closest friends through secret slander. In today's Morning Manna, Rick Wiles and Doc Burkhart explore how godly motives produce good fruit, while corrupt hearts use speech to deceive, divide, and destroy. This passage calls believers to discern motives, guard their tongues, and reject the whispers that tear relationships apart.Teachers: Rick Wiles and Doc BurkhartYou can partner with us by visiting FaithandValues.com, calling 1-888-519-4935, or by mail at PO Box 399 Vero Beach, FL 32961.MEGA FIRE reveals the ancient recurring cycles of war and economic collapse that have shaped history for 600 years. We live in a world obsessed with applause, where even our best intentions can quietly turn into performances for the eyes of others. Ray, E.Z., Mark, and Oscar remind believers that the desire to be seen and celebrated is not a minor issue but a heart-level struggle rooted in idolatry. From the beginning, humanity has longed for affirmation apart from God, but Scripture teaches that proper approval comes only from Him. Until we become nothing in our own eyes, God cannot fully display His power through us. The temptation to seek the praise of men lurks in every heart, and even in ministry, it is easy to drift from pleasing God to performing for people. The guys reflect on how easily preaching can become a stage. When props replace Scripture or humor overshadows truth, the message risks becoming entertainment rather than exposition. While creativity, stories, and illustrations can be powerful tools, the heart behind them must be examined. If the goal is applause or attention, the focus has shifted from Christ to self. The battle against showmanship begins in prayer, as we ask God to cleanse our motives and align our hearts with His glory. A faithful preacher studies diligently, prepares with reverence, and views each sermon as an offering, a fragrant sacrifice before the Lord. The real question is whether God is pleased.Social media intensifies this struggle, conditioning us to equate value with likes, followers, and views. The guys urge believers to resist that mindset and to preach, teach, and evangelize, regardless of whether anyone sees it or not. Faithful ministry is rooted in love, love that does not seek its own recognition but points all glory back to God. Congregations also play a role; encouragement is a blessing when it magnifies Christ rather than elevates the preacher. Pride constantly waits to creep in, but humility keeps the heart centered on the truth that apart from God, we can do nothing. All wisdom, insight, and power belong to Him alone. The world, seen clearly in Hollywood, thrives on the praise of man, but followers of Jesus are called to live for a higher audience. Every believer must ask what their motive truly is. Freedom from approval-seeking flows from the cross, where God has already accepted us through Christ's sacrifice. In that security, we serve from devotion rather than desperation. A life of continual communion with the Lord, anchored in prayer and His Word, shifts our focus from applause to obedience. In the end, faithfulness is not measured by claps or comments but by love, humility, and a heart that seeks only the glory of God.Send us a textThanks for listening!
