More To The Story: It's impossible to overstate rapper Tupac Shakur's influence on music and culture in the 1990s. One of the era's bestselling musical artists, Tupac helped define West Coast hip-hop through vulnerable, introspective lyrics and Black power politics. By his own admission, sports writer Jeff Pearlman is not the rapper's likeliest biographer. But as he waited for what he called “the big, fat biography” of Tupac, his impatience and long-standing fascination with the rapper got the best of him. So he set out to write it himself. On this week's episode, Pearlman talks about his book Only God Can Judge Me: The Many Lives of Tupac Shakur; discusses how Tupac's Black Panther mother, Afeni Shakur, shaped her son; and examines the nuance and mystery surrounding Tupac's life and death almost 30 years later.Producer: Josh Sanburn | Editor: Kara McGuirk-Allison | Theme music: Fernando Arruda and Jim Briggs | Copy editor: Nikki Frick | Digital producer: Artis Curiskis | Intern: Joni Binder | Deputy executive producer: Taki Telonidis | Executive producer: Brett Myers | Executive editor: James West | Host: Al LetsonRead: The 24 Best Books We Read in 2025 (Mother Jones)Listen: Baltimore Mayor to Trump: Don't Send Your Troops (More To The Story)Read: Only God Can Judge Me: The Many Lives of Tupac Shakur (Mariner Books)Note: If you buy a book using our Bookshop link, a small share of the proceeds supports our journalism. Most men think erectile dysfunction is a bedroom problem. It's actually one of the earliest warning signs of cardiovascular disease, capable of showing up three to five years before a heart attack. In this episode, Dr. Gabrielle Lyon sits down with Dr. Amy Pearlman, a urologist trained in men's sexual health, to discuss:Why ED is a symptom of vascular health, not a standalone disease and how the artery feeding the heart is roughly double the size of the one feeding the penis, so problems show up "down there" firstWhy "normal" testosterone can be meaningless, and the questions to ask before accepting a lab result that didn't flagHow daily erections preserve penile tissue the way water keeps a sponge supple and why disuse can cost noticeable size over just a few monthsThat cardiovascular exercise can rival ED medication for improving erectile function, making your heart health the real fixHow to track erectile fitness before there's a problem, instead of waiting until something breaksBy the end, you'll understand the single signal your body uses to flag heart and metabolic risk early and the simple, mostly drug-free steps that protect both your cardiovascular health and your sexual function for life.Thank you to our sponsors:Manukora - Go to https://bit.ly/3RCMrKx to save 31% plus $25 worth of free gifts.Timeline - Get 20% off your Mitopure order at https://bit.ly/4dW6BGNBon Charge - Save 15% at https://bit.ly/433Xi2B with code DRLYONExplore More from Dr. Gabrielle LyonPremium Podcast Subscription: Ad-free episodes, key takeaway summaries, exclusive Q&A, and behind-the-scenes content https://foreverstrong.supercast.comWeekly newsletter: Recipes, podcast updates, and practical weekly insights https://drgabriellelyon.com/sign-up/Apply to become a patient: Personalized care with Dr. Lyon's clinical team https://drgabriellelyon.com/new-patient-inquiry/Listen to "Pearls of Wisdom" on all your favorite platforms!Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4uOhWn5DeVXO7D2ppa0RoVApple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/pearls-of-wisdom/id1617916659Find Dr. Amy Pearlman at:Website: https://www.primeinstitute.us/YouTube: https://youtube.com/@docamyurology?si=oJ2LZ_sxMPYTaK41Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/amypearlmanmd/X: https://x.com/AmyPearlman1LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/amy-pearlman-54a2b0208Connect with Dr. Gabrielle Lyon:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drgabriellelyon/TikTok: @drgabriellelyonX (Twitter): https://x.com/drgabriellelyonFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/doctorgabriellelyonTimestamps00:00 - Introduction01:25 - Erections predict cardiac events01:41 - The pen and artery analogy03:40 - No health milestones for men07:52 - Normal structure and function11:45 - The five S's of men's health21:24 - Why "normal" testosterone misleads25:00 - Testosterone and fertility risk31:05 - Steroids versus FDA-approved agents41:13 - The untreated 25-year-old43:56 - Sperm health and home testing52:02 - Peyronie's disease and injury1:01:34 - Protein, nutrition, supplements1:05:09 - Daily Cialis as a pre-workout1:13:32 - The sponge analogy1:15:31 - Erectile fitness tracking1:23:05 - The penis pump, used right1:27:24 - Restoring lost size1:35:00 - Traction and girth enhancement1:46:00 - Women's anatomy and pleasureIf you found this episode valuable, share it with someone who would benefit from it.Disclaimers: This episode includes paid sponsorships. The Dr. Gabrielle Lyon Podcast and YouTube are for general information purposes only and do not constitute the practice of medicine, nursing, or other professional health care services, including the giving of medical advice, and no doctor/patient relationship is formed. Oz Pearlman is a well-known mentalist-entertainer and a less-well-known marathon and ultramarathon runner. However, his record on the roads and trails is just about as impressive as his mindreading tricks.Pearlman, 43, has run a 2:23 marathon, a 2:25 at Boston, and finished the Western States 100, the Badwater 135, and the Spartathlon in Greece. Recently, he was the planned entertainer at the White House Correspondents dinner in Washington, D.C.--the evening interrupted by gun shots and an apparent assassination attempt.Pearlman was crouched between President Trump and press secretary Karoline Leavitt, attempting to guess the name of her unborn child, when the first shots were heard. A moment later, he was caught in the swarm of Secret Service agents who stormed in to protect Trump, and lead him to safety. In this podcast, Pearlman chillingly describes the scene, including the fear he felt for himself and his wife and friends in attendance. He also talks about his early days in marathon running when he knew virtually nothing about the sport, and what he needed to learn before he became more successful. He's particularly insightful in explaining some of the shared mental strategies between his on-stage performances and in the last miles of a marathon or ultra. For more about Pearlman, check out his website or his Instagram feed.WHERE TO FIND "RUNNING: STATE OF THE SPORT"Use your smartphone to download our podcast from Apple, Spotify, Pandora, or YouTube Podcasts. We open the show on Oz Pearlman — the mentalist who's been showing up on every podcast and somehow keeps reading minds for a living. Adam just caught him on Modern Wisdom, where Pearlman walked the host through his exact internal thought process — what he picked, what he second-guessed, what he settled on — like he had a pipeline straight into the man's head. Adam now rearranges his schedule whenever Oz pops up on a screen. So consider this a formal invitation: Oz, come drink whiskey with us. Tell us our favorite bourbon. We'll pour the Glencairns.Speaking of — this week we're sipping High West Campfire. A blend of straight rye, straight bourbon, and blended malt scotch. Yes, scotch. Peat smoke gives way to orange zest, English toffee, toasted brioche, salted caramel, leather, dark chocolate. It works. Then Adam gives an update on baby Mary. New listeners — Adam's daughter was born very early with a heart condition and a long list of complications. She's been in the NICU since birth. This past weekend was her actual due date, and after a long string of holding-the-line W's, she's turned a meaningful corner. Off the paralytic. Better oxygen, blood pressure, heart rate. Swelling coming down. Still a long road — likely nine to twelve more months in the NICU. Adam and Lady Haylee are deeply grateful. Keep them in your prayers. Both of them.Quick note from Dave: Good Shepherd Sunday in Tulsa. The pastor handed out cards and asked every man in the pews to write down the name of a young man who'd make a good priest. A thousand men doing that work together. Tulsa's per-capita priest count is already top five in the country — and we still need more. Then we get into it. The King in the Tabernacle. If the Eucharist is just a symbol, the Catholic Church is a 2,000-year deception. Flannery O'Connor's line — to hell with it — is the right one. But we don't believe it's a symbol. We believe what Christ said. Body, blood, soul, and divinity. The continuation of the Incarnation, until the end of the age.David's been reading The Real Presence by St. Peter Julian Eymard (Cor Jesu Press). Eymard is the patron of Eucharistic adoration — one homily in him, gave it for a lifetime. And one chapter lays out a battle plan for how to actually spend a holy hour. Not just sit there. Spend it.The four ends of worship — ACTS: Adoration, Contrition, Thanksgiving, Supplication. Eymard breaks the hour into four fifteen-minute sections. First fifteen: adoration. You don't walk into the royal court making demands. You fall on your knees and salute the King. Second fifteen: thanksgiving — for yourself, your family, the world. Thank Him for instituting the Eucharist at all. (Most of us forget that one.) Third fifteen: reparation. Stand in the gap. For your sins, for the world's, especially for the sacrileges against the Eucharist itself. Fourth fifteen: petition. Now you can ask. Ask large graces. Ask for the triumph of His Church. By the time you get there, you're asking for the right things. We talk about the difference between knowing the Eucharist is Christ and acting like it. You don't accidentally get a six-pack at 40. You don't accidentally get holy, either. We're body-soul composites — what we do with our bodies forms our souls. That's why we genuflect. Dress for Mass. Kneel after Communion. St. Charbel had two modes: preparing to receive, or thanking God for having received. The bar he set is the right one.We close with Eymard's image of the guard of honor. Jesus has made Himself vulnerable in the host. Heart pierced. Defenseless. Waiting on His men to show up and adore Him. That's the work. Guard duty. Get to adoration. Change your life.Raise your glass.TOPICS COVEREDOz Pearlman the mentalist — and Adam's open invitation to come on the showBaby Mary's update: off the paralytic, turning a corner after months in the NICUWhy prayer for Lady Haylee matters as much as prayer for MaryGood Shepherd Sunday in Tulsa — a thousand men writing down names of future priestsWhy the Eucharist is the reason to be Catholic — and why "to hell with it" is the right answer if it's a symbolSt. Peter Julian Eymard, the patron of Eucharistic adoration, and his book The Real PresenceWhy the real presence is the continuation of the IncarnationThe actual battle plan for a holy hour: ACTS in fifteen-minute sectionsWhy thanksgiving in adoration is the most perfect act of loveReparation — standing in the gap for sacrileges against the EucharistWhy your petitions get sharper after you've adored, thanked, and made reparationKnowing the Eucharist is Christ vs. actually acting like itWhy you're not going to accidentally get holy any more than you're going to accidentally get a six-pack at 40Body-soul composites: how genuflection, posture, and dress shape the interior lifeSt. Charbel's two modes — preparing to receive Communion, or thanking God for having receivedLady Pamela stopping at every chapel she passed — and why that 60 seconds was worth more than Adam realizedDon't let the perfect be the enemy of the excellentThe guard of honor: Jesus exposing Himself in the host, depending on His men to defend and adore HimBourbon of the week: High West Campfire — the rare rye/bourbon/scotch blendREFERENCED IN THIS EPISODEBooks:The Real Presence by St. Peter Julian Eymard (Cor Jesu Press)Saints:St. Peter Julian EymardSt. CharbelMother Angelica (and her new shoes at adoration)People & previous guests:Joey Spencer — on Christ becoming the fruit hanging on a treeJeff Cavins — on talking to Jesus like He's actually thereFlannery O'Connor / Dorothy Day — "If it's a symbol, to hell with it"Oz Pearlman (mentalist, Modern Wisdom podcast)Lady Haylee MinihanLady Pamela NilesConcepts & references:The four ends of worship: Adoration, Contrition, Thanksgiving, Supplication (ACTS)The National Eucharistic CongressGood Shepherd SundayEucharistic adorationThe continuation of the IncarnationSubstance and accidents (Aristotelian-Thomistic metaphysics of the Eucharist)SPONSOR BLOCKSponsor: Select International Tours — selectinternationaltours.comWhen Adam and Dave decided to lead their first pilgrimage, the same name kept coming up: Select International Tours. Cole Allen is at the center of yet another act of political violence in his apparent attempt to shoot President Trump at the 2026 White House Correspondent's Dinner, though he said in his manifesto: "Administration officials (not including Mr. Patel): they are targets, prioritized from highest-ranking to lowest." The ordeal became more esoteric when it was discovered his fellowship at NASA, in the midst of missing scientists, and his name on an old X account called Henry Martinez, the latter name found in research for NASA and Lockheed Martin--supposedly the company responsible for the TicTac--at the core of UFO Disclosure debates at the White House. The profile header is a psychedelic artwork, found on a website called Time Machine, that many are also claiming has the Butler, PA, assassination photograph embedded. This has led people to speculate that time travel, even the Ingersoll Lockwood series, is relevant once more. It might be that much of this is a manufactured alternate explanation for what was really behind the shooting. Besides talking points about strong men like Stephen Miller, Pete Hegseth or even Trump, protecting their wives, mockingbird social influencers jumped online to parrot the need for the new Presidential ballroom. This is where things take a more occult turn. The layout of that room, according to the Presidential image, is akin to Solomon's Temple. Trump recently fired McCrery Architects in favor of Shalom Baranes, a Jewish architect who works on Synagogue temple renovations. Furthermore, the shooting took place on April 25, the same day that America Reads the Bible collaboration concluded; the event where Trump read 2 Corinthians 7 about the Jewish temple. Cole Allen was also photographed on social media wearing what appears to be an IDF shirt. On the Jewish-run CBS, Trump immediately sat down for an interview where he said Allen "was a Christian believer, and then he became an anti-Christian."  Allen wrote in his manifesto: "I am a citizen of the United States of America. What my representatives do reflects on me. And I am no longer willing to permit a pedophile, rapist, and traitor to coat my hands with his crimes." Trump responded to the comments on CBS, saying Allen was "sick" and that he personally had nothing to do with "Epstein." Laura Loomer (Jewish) referenced the same, saying Allen "was radicalized by the podcasters who spread Epstein conspiracy theories and Israel conspiracy theories. He thought Trump was a pedo and owned." Debra Lea (Jewish) went viral for her Instagram-posing cover of the post-shooting event in her skimpy dress and Star of David necklace. Olivia Reingold (Jewish) went viral for posting a video of her hiding near a table while almost everyone around her was standing or walking around. The central  entertainment of the event was Jewish magician Oz Pearlman. In other words, anyone concerned about the Epstein files, the war in Iran, or Israeli influence on American politics, is no better than Cole Allen. While conspiracy theorists fall into a blackhole of random X accounts, a ritual production has produced the desired outcome. The political hyperreality is that it doesn't matter what is or is not real. Uri Geller, another Jewish magician, made a video the same weekend claiming he went to South Korea to assist in the recovering of an alien craft. Are Jews using the UFO narrative to position themselves as the "chosen" people of an alien presence linked to the Old Testament? Are Jews using Trump to build the Third Temple in the White House, that shining building of the American Zion? Even though it is strange JD Vance was rushed off stage before Trump, it is likely the event was about more than simply staging Trump as the strong leader.*The is the FREE archive, which includes advertisements. This podcast explores the life and legacy of Tupac Shakur as presented in Jeff Pearlman's biography, "Only God Can Judge Me: The Many Lives of Tupac Shakur."The episode centers on biographer Jeff Pearlman, a white sportswriter who spent three years conducting over 650 interviews to piece together a "definitive historic record" of Tupac. Pearlman acknowledges his status as an outsider to Hip-Hop culture, describing his approach as a "blank slate" intended to listen rather than project an agenda. A pivotal moment in his reporting occurred during an interview with Tupac's sister, Sekyiwa, who "checked" his privilege by correcting his use of the word "moved" to "relocated" when describing the family's transition from Baltimore to California—a distinction that highlighted the systemic forces at play in their lives.A major portion of the discussion focuses on the "profoundly sad" reality of Tupac's childhood. While his mother, Afeni Shakur, was a revolutionary icon of the Panther 21, the book reveals the devastating impact of her crack addiction on a young Tupac. The "Thug Life" persona was, in part, a carefully constructed mask. Before his rap fame, Tupac was a sensitive ballet and theater student who loved Kate Bush and Don McLean. The narrative suggests that as "gangsta rap" became the dominant commercial force, Tupac adapted his image to fit the industry, leading to a "saga of the mask gradually eating the face" as he became increasingly reckless to maintain his street credibility.

In the early hours of March 13, 1964, twenty-eight-year-old Kitty Genovese returned home from work and parked her car in a lot near her Queens apartment, completely unaware that someone was following her. As she approached the door to her apartment building, Kitty's stalker ran up behind her and stabbed her in the back twice before being scared off by a neighbor who yelled from his window. Wounded, Kitty managed to get to the back of the building, but her attacker soon returned and brutally assaulted her. By the time an ambulance arrived an hour later, it was too late; Kitty Genovese died before she reached the hospital.Kitty's murder and the arrest of her killer, Winston Moseley, were quickly overshadowed by what were believed to be the facts of the attack, primarily the widely held belief that at least thirty-eight neighbors had seen the assault or heard Kitty's cries for help and did nothing. Despite there having been no evidence to support that belief, the narrative quickly became about urban apathy, with the death of a Queens bartender merely a footnote. The murder of Kitty Genovese is one of the most notorious violent crimes in modern American history—not because of the details or circumstances of the crime, but because of the legend and mythology that has built up around it.ReferencesCook, Kevin. 2014. SUMMARY In this conversation, Steve Pearlman discusses the principles of martial arts, emphasizing the importance of understanding Newton's third law of motion and how it applies to martial arts training. He shares his experiences of training, the joy of community, and the role of humor in martial arts. The discussion also covers the evolution of training perspectives, the significance of confidence over mere skills in self-defense, and the philosophical approach to avoiding fights. Pearlman reflects on his journey from being a technique collector to understanding deeper principles and theories in martial arts, highlighting the impact of cross-training on his understanding of the art. Pearlman also discusses the journey of writing about martial arts, the need for a comprehensive martial arts canon, and the significance of community within the martial arts world. The dialogue highlights the unique nature of martial artists as individuals who engage in selfless acts for the growth of others, fostering a deeper understanding of their craft. TAKEAWAYS Newton's third law of motion applies to martial arts. Training should be enjoyable and community-oriented. Early training can be serious, but it evolves over time. Training should focus on principles, not just techniques. Cross-training reveals universal principles across martial arts. Understanding body movement is crucial in martial arts. Theoretical knowledge must translate into practical skills. Depth in training is more beneficial than surface-level exposure. Finding a good teacher and system is essential for growth. Principles should guide martial arts practice rather than just styles. The martial arts community lacks a definitive text akin to 'The Art of War.' Send us Fan MailFrom multiple New York Times best-selling author Jeff Pearlman comes the rollicking, outrageous, you-can't-make-this-up story of the USFL—Football for a Buck: The Crazy Rise and Crazier Demise of the USFL. (From 9-18-18)The United States Football League—known fondly to millions of sports fans as the USFL—was the last football league to challenge the NFL while causing its owners and executives to collectively shudder. It spanned three seasons, from 1983 to 1985, secured multiple television deals, drew millions of fans, and launched the careers of legends. But then it died beneath the weight of a particularly egotistical and bombastic owner—a New York businessman named Donald J. Trump. The league featured as many as eighteen teams, and included such superstars as Steve Young, Jim Kelly, Herschel Walker, Reggie White, Doug Flutie, and Mike Rozier. In Football for a Buck, dogged reporter and biographer Jeff Pearlman draws on more than four hundred interviews to unearth all the salty, untold stories of one of the craziest sports entities ever to have captivated America. From excess drug usage in the '80s to airplane brawls and player-coach punch outs, to backroom business deals, to some of the most enthralling and revolutionary football ever seen, Pearlman transports readers back in time to this crazy, boozy, audacious, and unforgettable era of the game. He shows how fortunes were made and lost on the backs of professional athletes and how, even thirty years ago, Trump was a scoundrel and a spoiler.

Today, Jesse is joined by Dr. Phil Pearlman—psychologist, behavioral finance veteran, and founder of the Pearl Institute—for a conversation about how long-term health and long-term wealth are two sides of the same coin. Together, they explore why the holiday season, while full of joy and connection, is also the unhealthiest stretch of the year for most Americans—and how small, deliberate choices can reverse that trend. Phil shares his "four pillars of health"—nutrition, exercise, sleep, and love/community—alongside his own powerful story of addiction, recovery, and rediscovering the athlete within. From the parallels between compounding habits and compounding returns to the dangers of "energy toxicity" in modern diets, the discussion connects physical and financial wellbeing through the shared principles of discipline, awareness, and intentional living. Phil explains why cutting alcohol, prioritizing protein, and starting with just one sustainable habit—like morning walks—can transform both body and mindset. Throughout, Jesse and Phil remind listeners that you only get one body, one life, and one chance to invest in both wisely. Key Takeaways: • Health and wealth are interconnected — both require discipline, patience, and compounding habits to create long-term success. • Nutrition is the top priority; you can't "out-exercise" a bad diet, and most health challenges begin with poor food choices. • Alcohol is one of the biggest barriers to health, harming sleep, metabolism, mood, and long-term physical wellness. • Phil's personal transformation—from addiction and poor health to sobriety and vitality—shows that renewal is always possible. • Morning walks are a high-impact, low-barrier habit, improving mood, metabolism, and sleep cycles. • Community and connection are health essentials, not luxuries; love and belonging strengthen both body and mind. A Note from JamesTupac Shakur—one of the greatest rap artists ever—was shot and killed almost two decades ago. What else is there left to say about him? What new things can be said?Well, Jeff Pearlman's new book, Only God Can Judge Me: The Many Lives of Tupac Shakur, takes on that challenge. In our conversation, we talk about what Jeff uncovered in his research, why he wanted to write another Tupac book, and what made this one different. But first, a little story. Back in the '90s, I was running a company that built websites. Around 1997 or '98, Tupac's mom wanted to release a new album of his music and build a website around it. I went in to pitch the project—$90,000, which would've covered payroll for another month. I needed that deal.So I show up, ready to impress. Tupac's manager says, “Okay, here's my computer. Show me what you've got.” And I realize—I've never used a Windows machine in my life. I'd only ever used Macs. I couldn't even figure out how to turn it on.I had a computer science degree. I was a software engineer. I'd been running this company for years. But in that moment, I had to admit: “I don't know how to use this machine.” He laughed me out of the room. Literally. That was the day I learned that even the smartest pitch can fall apart if you forget to check which operating system you're using.Anyway—what else is there to talk about with Tupac Shakur? Jeff Pearlman and I figured it out.Episode DescriptionIn this episode, James sits down with bestselling author and journalist Jeff Pearlman (The Last Folk Hero, Showtime, Sweetness) to talk about his latest book, Only God Can Judge Me: The Many Lives of Tupac Shakur.Pearlman explores the contradictions, brilliance, and tragedy of Tupac's life—how a performing arts kid from Baltimore became the poetic voice of West Coast hip hop, and how his complex identity was shaped by the Black Panther movement, celebrity culture, and the rise of gangsta rap.James and Jeff unpack Tupac's evolution from Digital Underground hype man to solo artist, his influence on music and film, and the deeper meaning behind songs like Brenda's Got a Baby. They also trace the events leading up to his death, separating myth from reality, and reflect on what Tupac's legacy might have become if he'd lived. What You'll LearnWhy Tupac's “gangster” persona was more performance than realityHow his upbringing under a Black Panther mother shaped his worldviewThe untold story behind Brenda's Got a Baby—and how Pearlman found the real “baby” years laterThe truth about Tupac's relationship with Biggie Smalls and the events that led to both of their deathsWhy Tupac might have gone on to become a political or cultural leader, not just a rapperHow hip hop evolved from the storytelling of the '90s to today's more fragmented soundTimestamped Chapters[00:00] Introduction – James shares his connection to Tupac's world [02:43] A Note from James – The web pitch that went wrong [05:00] Why Jeff Pearlman wrote a Tupac book [07:00] The challenge of writing outside his comfort zone [09:00] Tupac's background and the myth of the “gangsta” image [11:00] The evolution of rap from the '80s to now [16:00] What made Tupac's art different from his peers [18:30] Tupac as a natural actor—and how he almost won an Oscar [21:00] Was his “gangster” side authentic or performance? WHY LISTEN? Because Jeff Pearlman strips away the myth to reveal the real Tupac Shakur—a brilliant, wounded, and fiercely human artist whose story still speaks to America's struggles with family, race, trauma, and truth.Happy Halloween, everyone. To celebrate, we're turning our attention to one of white America's most mythic—and most feared—figures: the hip-hop legend Tupac Shakur. In Only God Can Judge Me, his new Tupac biography, the Los Angeles-based sportswriter Jeff Pearlman reveals both the humanity and the heartbreak behind the myth. Yes, Pearlman concedes, Tupac Shakur was far from perfect. Yet in his music, his movies, and above all his short, turbulent life, Tupac embodied the quintessential American hero—a man who, despite all the injustice and chaos around him, stood up for what was right. Here was someone whom perhaps not even God could judge.1. Tupac's story is fundamentally about trauma, not violencePearlman's biggest revelation wasn't about gang culture or rap feuds—it was about the crushing weight of intergenerational trauma. Watching his hero mother, former Black Panther Afeni Shakur, descend into crack addiction left Tupac with wounds that shaped everything. “The trauma of having your hero become this thing that's unrecognizable and zombie-like,” Pearlman explains, is what people miss when they romanticize Afeni as simply a “goddess” or reduce Tupac to a “son of a Black Panther.”2. Tupac was a theater kid before he was a gangster rapperBefore Marin City's crack epidemic and Death Row Records, Tupac Shakur was studying at the Baltimore School of the Arts—writing poetry, dancing, and dreaming of acting. He was “this free spirit who lived this beautiful, beautiful life,” Pearlman says. That artistic foundation—not the tough-guy persona—was his authentic self. Actor Jim Belushi told Pearlman that Tupac was on the verge of becoming an Academy Award–winning actor. The gangster image that Death Row demanded wasn't who he wanted to be.3. The book is sad—and that surprised everyone, including Pearlman“I didn't expect this to be a sad book,” Pearlman admits. But every proofreader who read it said the same thing: “God, this book is so sad.” Tupac died young, nearly broke, used by powerful people, and alone in many ways—desperate to be understood and accepted. “Life kind of gobbled him up,” Pearlman says. The mythology of Tupac as an invincible icon obscures the heartbreaking reality of a 25-year-old carrying impossible weight.4. Writing about Tupac as a white suburban sportswriter required radical humilityPearlman acknowledges the cultural distance he had to cross: “It's a weird situation being a white guy who grew up in middle-class rural America writing about Tupac... I never experienced that level of trauma.” His approach wasn't to claim expertise but to listen deeply and interview exhaustively. Along the way, he gained an unexpected education in Southern California gang culture—discovering that many former gang members and drug dealers “are wonderful guys” who “just had different journeys.”5. Tupac would be “absolutely furious” about Trump's America—and probably arrestedWhen asked what Tupac would think of today's political climate, Pearlman doesn't hesitate: “I think 25-year-old Tupac would be horrified, but not surprised.” More specifically, “I can't imagine Tupac Shakur of any age just sitting back” while ICE agents grab people in unmarked vehicles. “I think he'd be 100% getting arrested at ICE roundups,” Pearlman says. As for Biden or Harris? Tupac would probably see them as “corporate shills who don't stand up enough for the people.”Keen On America is a reader-supported publication.
