I talked to Billy about growing up AT camp! He gives us some good behind the scenes insight about how camp came to be, what goes into preparing for a camp season... and more! We also talked about his journey from camper to running all of the behind the scenes, and how there were no bumps in that road! This is a great episode and - as I say in the episode - the camp is in good hands thanks to this next generation!

The Local Lens is a public health podcast going inside one community's experience with the drug epidemic. Everyone in the town of Stanton, KY sees this drug issue differently from each other, either because of their personal lives or professional roles. This show aims to showcase those different perspectives through having honest, in-depth interviews with a new guest each episode. We are joined this week by the detective Billy Rice, a Powell County native who appears to have come full-circle in his character arc. He is a man whose parents drug usage caused him to be raised by others in his family.   He is a poster child of family intervention, claiming to be the prodigy of what happens when people step up when help is needed. Today, the former record-breaking quarterback for the high school football team serves his community as a detective, combatting the issue that shaped his childhood. In this episode, he shares his insight working for the Police Department and gives his opinions on how to best help people. These are our people, using our voices, telling our stories, because no one sees it like we do.Keep up with The Local Lens on Facebook and Instagram. The Local Lens is sponsored by Kentucky Opioid Community Healing (from the Kentucky Rural Health Information Organization) and Powell County CARES (from the Powell County Health Department).

On March 19th at 5:00am Mark McGraw lined up at the start line of the "unofficial" GranGravel 500 Race along with two others. The official race was cancelled due to COVID-19, but that didn't stop these guys from lining up to take on the course, the elements, and potential resupply closures at key points. The forecast called for lots of rain that would make many of the roads unrideable. Despite that Mark still was able to finish in 66 hours (2 days, 18 hours). When he was only 80 miles from the finish I drove out to snap some pictures and cheer him on, by this time he was the last man standing and it was raining. However, I was happy to see that his spirits were high and his legs still pushing strong. I'm bummed that I wasn't able to participate this year, but it was a joy to get to chat with Mark about his race. I learned some things that I hope I get to put into action next year. The GranGravel 500 was created by Billy Rice. It starts and finishes in Bryan, TX (my hometown) and takes you through 500 miles of East Texas gravel, through two National Forest, and by countless country churches and cemeteries. Maybe next year I'll see you at the start line?!

Billy was actually at the Brush Mountain Lodge during some of the speculation, he is also a 6 time vet of the Tour Divide, and has been filmed for Inspired to Ride. The Great Divide Mountain Bike Route (GDMBR) is Adventure Cycling's premier off-pavement cycling route, crisscrossing the Continental Divide north to south. The route starts in Banff, Canada, zigzags along the Continental Divide, climbs over isolated passes and finishes in Antelope Wells at the border of Mexico. In 2011 Billy was sitting on his couch, literally, and watched a documentary covering this extraordinary race. After watching it he decided to do it. Now Billy coaches endurance athletes. His story is proof that you really never know where your fitness journey will take you. Enjoy! *You can learn more about Billy's coaching services on his YouTube channel: Invictus Ultra-Distance Coaching If you are interested in learning more about our programs visit www.boomfitbcs.com.

May 26, 2014 - Billy Rice is the first rider to ride the Tour Divide.....back-to-back. In 2013, he started in Antelope Wells, New Mexico, rode over 2,700 miles north to Banff, Alberta, Canada, and then turned around and rode back to Antelope Wells.   Bikepackers Magazine recently did a written Q & A with Billy (Read it here) in which they shared some information about his history, his riding, and the Tour Divide. Have a read and then listen in to this episode.   This interview is a great look into the man behind the bike, as Billy and Neil dig into what would motivate him and others to take on large challenges such as the Divide.   Related Show Links: Read about Billy Rice on Bikepackers Magazine Bikepackers Magazine Bikepackers Magazine Reviews Contact Bikepackers Magazine Trans Am Bike Race Inspired to Ride Medical Relief Foundation Bikepackers Magazine Social: Facebook Twitter Google+ Instagram
