Bio written by her friend:   “Sam, 47, has an interesting and diverse background, having Indian and English heritage and growing up between the UK, USA and Middle East.    Over the past few years she has set herself multiple challenges raising money for charity or just doing for fun.    In 2019, Sam set herself 12 challenges:  Cold Water Swimming Championships 10K Winter run Climbing one of the more challenging routes up Snowdon Swimathon (5k swim) Great Northern SwimRun (Lake Windermere) Selkie Henley Classic - night / dawn swim SwimRun Tooting Bec Running a half marathon Not drinking any alcohol for 28 days Marathon run North Downs 50k walk Trekking two marathons in two days through the desert   Unfortunately in late 2020, she was diagnosed with stage four cancer which was a huge blow to her, her family and friends. I certainly thought that would be the end of her adventuring and it felt immensely sad.    However Sam has a remarkable positive energy and outlook on life and has been determined to carry on as normal.    This year, while managing ongoing cancer treatment, she has already completed the Arcticbear swim challenge over winter, the 100km jurassic coast walk challenge, the great north 5km swim in lake Windermere, the lake Windermere trail walk challenge, The Selkie Henley classic 2km upstream swim at dawn, and Henley mile swim (I've probably missed more!).    I have been lucky enough to share some of these adventures with her and have learnt so much along the way.    From learning to enjoy those precious moments in the outdoors or in the water, to persevering even when things seem impossible.    I think a lot of your listeners would benefit from hearing her story, knowing where she has come from, what she is battling today and her vision for the future.”     New episodes of the Tough Girl Podcast go live every Tuesday at 7am UK time - Hit the subscribe button so you don't miss out.    The Tough Girl Podcast is sponsorship and ad free thanks to the monthly financial support of patrons.    Support the mission to increase the amount of female role models in the media. News: Southern California residents have a new ticket discount that they can take advantage of with trips beginning January 3rd, 2022. For as little as $67 per day, guests can purchase a three-day, one-park per day weekday ticket, subject to reservations. The tickets are good through visits through May 26th, 2022 on weekdays only. During this time, the Lunar New Year, DCA Food and Wine Festival, Mickey's Mix Magic, and the return of the nighttime spectaculars will be back at the parks! Guests can also save up to 25% on Disneyland Resort hotels during some of this period. To take advantage of these deals, you can contact our friends over at ConciEARS to get your trip booked. – https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2021/12/disneyland-resort-offers-southern-california-residents-special-3-day-weekday-ticket-prices-for-a-limited-time-with-visits-beginning-jan-3-2022/ Magic Key Holders, mark your calendars! February, 2022 will be Magic Keyholder Celebration Month. Disneyland announced the month long celebration of Key Holders happening in the parks, Downtown Disney, and at home! No specific details have been released on what will be offered in February, but we will keep you posted as news is released. – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2021/12/16/disneyland-magic-key-holders-prepare-to-be-celebrated-for-a-whole-month-next-year/ An unhappy Magic Key Holder has filed a lawsuit against Disney for “deceiving it's most loyal fan base by artificially limiting theme park capacity and blocking passholders with ‘no blockout' annual passes from making reservations.” The lawsuit is a $5 million dollar suit filed on behalf of all Disneyland Magic Key holders claiming that Disney “relegated them to ‘second class' ticket holders by artificially limiting Magic Key reservations and the number of passholders that can visit on any given day.” Disneyland has said that they will “vigorously defend our position as the case proceeds.” – https://www.ocregister.com/2021/12/16/disneyland-passholder-lawsuit-alleges-magic-key-deceptively-advertises-no-blockout-dates/ and https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2021/12/20/disney-responds-to-5-million-magic-key-and-park-reservation-lawsuit/ and https://disneyland.disney.go.com/magic-key-terms-conditions/ When we were in the parks a couple of weeks ago, there were quite a few PhotoPass photographers who were trying to take amazing photos, and control the crowds at the same time. This week, it appears that they have received some help at Sleeping Beauty Castle with rops to direct guests around the optimal PhotoPass photo area. – https://www.micechat.com/310365-disneyland-update-magic-key-lawsuit-zany-maynard-fun-and-ho-ho-ho/ For guests that have been pre-screened for the Disability Access Service or DAS (pronounced DAAHS) now have a new option available in the Disneyland App. Return times can be reserved through the app after the service has been linked to a ticket, making it unncessary to visit with a guest relations cast member to make a reservation. – https://www.micechat.com/310365-disneyland-update-magic-key-lawsuit-zany-maynard-fun-and-ho-ho-ho/ Single bobsled riders should take note of this next news item. The single rider line has moved at the Matterhorn from the area where the Lightning Lane return area was, to the right side exit of the attraction, towards the teacups. This should help alleviate at least some of the congestion that can happen where the three lines come together at the entrance. – https://www.micechat.com/310365-disneyland-update-magic-key-lawsuit-zany-maynard-fun-and-ho-ho-ho/ With the opening of the Plaza Point Holiday Shoppe on Main Street, the holiday shop in Fantasyland has been re-themed. The location, now called Merlin's Marvelous Miscellany, received a new sign sporting the new name last week. No information on what will be offered in the shop just yet. – https://www.micechat.com/310365-disneyland-update-magic-key-lawsuit-zany-maynard-fun-and-ho-ho-ho/ The Disney Parks Blog has some festive holiday digital wallpapers available for download. Each design comes in mobile, desktop, and Apple Watch versions for all screen sizes. Designs include Mickey Mouse getting ready to hit the slopes, Mike and Sully playing outside in the snow, Rocket and Groot strung up in lights, and many more. Head on over to the link in our show notes to download the version that best says Happy Holidays for you. – https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2021/12/celebrate-the-holiday-season-with-new-disney-digital-wallpapers/ A new, ecological way to get around the Anaheim Resort District is coming soon. Sage Energy Consulting is working with the Anaheim Transportation Network to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, reduce electricity costs, and charge the new vehicles. Some of the charging stations are solar powered, and work with batteries to store power when the sun is out, and charge the busses when it is a cloudy day, or at night. The goal is to have a 100% electric fleet by 2025. – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2021/12/17/how-your-ride-to-disneyland-will-be-different-in-the-future/ Fans of soccer, or football as it is known everywhere else in the world, now have a place to shop in Downtown Disney. Pele, named after the legendary Brazilian soccer player, opened this last week. The store is themed like a stadium, and offers a variety of soccer gear from global sports brands. Official club and national team jerseys from around the world are also for sale which can be customized with a name and number. – https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2021/12/more-exciting-new-shops-and-experiences-arrive-in-downtown-disney-district-at-disneyland-resort/ Disney+ subscribers have more Disney Insider episodes to catch on the streaming service. This week I invite you to enjoy a slightly condensed audio version of a recent Women's World of Fishing Monday Night Facebook/YouTube Live featuring professional bass angler Stephanie Hemphill-Pellerin.  We understand it can be a challenge on Monday nights to take the time out and sit down with your device or computer and tune-in, so I decided to share with you the great conversation Barbara Harris and I had with this incomparable woman angler. Now you can listen in on your commute to work or to the shopping mall for those last-minute Christmas gifts. Here's the description from the show as summed up by Barbara Harris: We were finally able to catch up with the LBAA Professional Rookie of the Year, Stephanie Hemphill-Pellerin! She is a tough lady to squeeze in because she is always fishing, and when I say that, I am being very serious. For instance, her schedule for next year? She is fishing as an MLF, Central Opens, AND LBAA professional! Aside from actual tournament days, she will be driving, practicing, researching, and in all honesty, the lady does have to sleep at some point! When it comes to catching fish, Stephanie is a threat to everyone she fishes against. She came in 4th overall in Angler of the Year points during her Rookie season with the LBAA and she also came in 34th out of 188 boats in a BFL Wildcard tournament on the boater side. She makes good, solid decisions on the water, and what's even more dangerous than that? She "grades her own paper" at the end of a tournament and identifies the mistakes she made or the little things she could have done to improve her performance. Essentially, Stephanie doesn't "put a tournament behind her." She is always learning and "upping her game." In my opinion, her talent and instincts make her good. However, her work ethic, ability to critique herself, learn, her dedication, desire, drive, and ability to self-motivate are what make her great. One thing is for certain. Stephanie is a Stick on the water that people will be chasing for a long time. She is also a wonderful role model for women in fishing and she is actively advocating for women in the sport both on Social Media and behind the scenes. As long as women of Stephanie's caliber continue to advocate for women, we will continue to progress in this sport in so many ways! Enjoy! Kenneth L. Kieser has had a long career and successful career as an outdoor communicator. For more than 46 years, he's been writing and sharing stories from the heart covering things like waterfowl hunting, trout fishing, women in fishing and so much more. His work has garnered him multiple awards including being inducted into the Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame as well as the Waterfowlers Hall of Fame. I first met Kenny at the Association of Great Lakes Outdoor Writers conference back in 2018 in Bismark, ND. We got to go fishing together on the Missouri River thanks to Angler Qwest pontoons. On that day, I remember learning so much about his career and his connection to some of the amazing women behind the growth of female competitive bass fishing such as Sugar Ferris and Carol Boykin. We also discuss the work he's done to teach mentally and physically challenged kids to fish.  When he tells a story, you hang onto every word! Enjoy! Need a gift for the angler in your life? If you're like me, you're always hopeful that the time spent out shooting will be rewarding and productive. But sometimes it doesn't work out that way. Sometimes we continue to be distracted or otherwise “out of it” in a manner of speaking. I'm thrilled to have Lori and Brie join me to tackle this topic on this edition of Latitude Photography Podcast, Episode 136 for December 5, 2021 Check out the expanded show notes here: https://latitudephotographypodcast.com/episode/136 Year-End Challenge: Go through your 2021 images and select 10–20 that represent your best efforts of the year. Submit them to the fb group for the show so we can see what you've been up to and so that we can also cheer you on. I'd also love some brief commentary. Tell us how you've GROWN over the last year. That would be amazing. Or tell us your challenges and tell us how you plan to grow this year. Use the Hashtag #TopImages2021 Just a quick note before we jump into the main topic with Lori and Brie… I mention in this conversation about a future episode with Greg Benz. It's actually going to be two weeks from today that it's released, the 19th of December. In this conversation I said “next week” and I just wanted to clear that up. Also, there will be other announcements and what-not afterwards, please stick around for that! And now,,, off to the conversation where we're looking at this notion of speeding up the process of slowing down. Get yourself on the Globetrotter notifications list. https://brentbergherm.com/latitude-photo-school/globetrotter/ Find out more about the Palouse Shoot-n-Print Workshop https://brentbergherm.com/workshops/palouse-shoot-n-print-workshop/ The price is increasing 18% for Latitude Photography School on Jan 2, 2022. Sign up today to lock in current prices. https://brentbergherm.com Main Topic Speeding Up the process of Slowing Down in your photography Setting the stage, what's this all about? Optimizing Opportunities for Creativity -  (Lori) Forecast potential photography events, such as weather, sunrise & sunsets, celestial events, full moon, new moon, Milky Way, etc. Consider things that might be of interest to you, local events, animal migrations, blooming seasons, etc. Put these events on a calendar and set aside time to photograph them in advance.  For weather and celestial events, pre-plan the closest locations you can get to quickly in case an unanticipated event is happening. I use a weather app called Clear to forecast sunrise & sunsets. I use Aurora Pro to forecast Aurora events. The forecast is key to capturing these types of events. Figuring out what works best for you Trying to “get into the zone” of photography Brent's Tips If you've been at something a while… Take a break Great for long post-production sessions Get out and change your scenery-environment It should last at least 20 minutes, I've never seen it work with a shorter time frame, it often takes longer If you're trying to concentrate on the project at hand, the shoot, or in post-production Turn off your notifications on your phone and-or computer Spend some time decompressing, transitioning to the “zone.” If your mind is racing, or constantly distracted, grab a notepad and write down all the things you're thinking about. Use the notetaking feature on your phone if needed. Write it down and get it out of your mind. Clear your mind. If you're doing “car-based shooting” where you don't have to hike much you're at a disadvantage with this process. Be patient. Don't rush it. It feels counterintuitive but it seriously works. Brie's Tips Same as Brent - Just actually SLOW DOWN!!  When we rush it can cause us to make easy mistakes. Rushing can stop us from focusing on the present and being intentional with our photography. We have a greater chance of enjoyment and success when we can be patient. If you find yourself rushing, take a minute to breathe deeply and relax your body. Plan ahead!  Be intentional in how you approach your photography so you can create your experience on purpose. Plan ahead to be patient and focus on the experience.  I do this all the time and it works! Lori's Tips Allocate time for photography in advance… create a large block of time Mute your cell phone, don't post on social media during photo trips, only afterwards.  Upon arrival at your site, take time to get plugged into the environment. Use as many of your senses as you can to explore your surroundings. Sight… Look around and scan for interesting things, both large & small. Listen… Can you hear wind in the trees, nearby streams, birds, bugs, etc. Touch… Feel the breeze on your skin, the texture of rocks, trees, etc. Breathe Deeply… Pull fresh air deep into your lungs. Plants, flowers, and even animals often give off aromas that can make you aware of their presence. Let yourself be fully absorbed into the nature experience. Imagine yourself as a part of the environment, not just an observer of the environment. Be inquisitive… Seek out some of the things you learned from using your senses.    Announcements, Resources, and Links If you enjoyed this episode of Latitude Photography Podcast, I invite you to consider going further with your photography experience. Rosemary in her own words, talking about Nellie Bly and her record breaking race around the world:   “Crusading journalist Nellie Bly jumped off the page at me. She appeared as I was researching Victorian women adventurers… and she wouldn't go away.  The more I got to know her, the more I was intrigued by this spirited woman who wouldn't take no for an answer despite living in a world where women ‘knew their place.'     Nellie knew her place alright, smack dab on the front page of the world's newspapers.   She pioneered investigative journalism and paved the way for female reporters like me. Nellie's crusades in print brought about huge reforms in women's asylums, sweatshops and prisons.   2015 marked the 125th anniversary of her best known adventure — circling the globe in a record-breaking 72 days. In celebration of the remarkable Nellie Bly and her amazing journey, I followed in her footsteps around the world.   Now there is a book chronicling our two journeys: Following Nellie Bly: Her Record-Breaking Race Around the World.     My aim is to put Nellie 'back on the map' as an inspiration for adventure, and a reminder that (as Nellie said) "'nothing is impossible if one applies a certain amount of energy in the right direction.”   New episodes of the Tough Girl Podcast go live every Tuesday at 7am UK time. What can we learn that's relatable from a modern day action man, who trained as a marine commando and sniper, who runs into active volcanoes, risks his life interviewing Mexican Narcos, survived Ebola and broke the Guiness World record for rowing across the Atlantic Ocean?Well it turns out quite an incredible amount!Aldo Kane is an Adventurer, Explorer, a Fellow at the Royal Geographic Society, Producer, Author & TV Presenter with a penchant for the world's most dangerous, extreme and remote locations. Aldo was recently the on-screen Expedition Leader for National Geographic's latest flag-ship feature length Natural History series One Strange Rock, hosted by Hollywood star, Will Smith. This saw Aldo lead a prominent American Scientist deep inside one of Africa's most dangerous volcanoes whilst it was erupting and the description of this in his book “Lessons on the Edge” is absolutely riveting! Over the last 7 years Aldo has worked on many ground-breaking (and as he describes them “fairly tasty”) TV shows! He's been held at gunpoint, charged by black Rhino, abseiled into an active volcano, escaped Ebola and dived on Captain Kidd's pirate ship, and that's just the last year or two. Aldo has appeared with Hollywood A-Listers like Tom Hardy, Adrien Brody & Henry Cavill in some of the most extreme environments on earth. We talk about so many themes today:Mental fitnessCompartmentalisingFlow statesConsistency over Skill as the secret to successStoicismGroundingA bit of background if you haven't seen him on one of his many TV shows. Aldo joined the Royal Marine Commandos at the age of just 16 and went on to become one of the youngest Elite Commando Reconnaissance Snipers in the UK armed forces. No mean feat with the hardest, and longest infantry training in the world. Aldo saw active military service from Northern Ireland to the Middle East and became a survival expert in many environments. As you will hear today, he's probably one of the humblest and nicest people I've ever had the pleasure of interviewing. Calm, collected, jovial, chatty and altogether ‘grounded', as I would describe it. I could have chatted to him easily for hours, but instead I recommend you either read or listen to his book “Lessons from the Edge” that you can find in all good bookstores. A fantastic book for Christmas, it is perfect escapism. Just a bit of warning, the language is a bit salty on this episode. So just take care if any kids are listening in. And remember check out thedoctorskitchen.com newsletter where I share weekly mindset tips, many of which Aldo puts into practice when he's in extreme environments, such as breathwork and reframing.
