Pack the car! Route 66 turns 100 this year, and the Mother Road is still one weird and wild ride. We're hitting the highway from the California border to the New Mexico high desert, where we'll encounter the feral donkeys who rule the streets of a gold rush boomtown, visit an abandoned zoo with a body count, and climb a 2,000-year-old pueblo with a hidden staircase that outsmarted the Spanish conquistadors. Along the way, journalist and adventurer Will Grant introduces us to the people who populate this legendary road: a Hualapai elder who remembers the highway's golden age, the determined shopkeeper who fought to preserve her town's iconic neon glow, and a young Diné man who grew up at his family's trading post. Together, they share what the centenarian route means to the communities that depend on it—and tap into the powerful hold it still has on the nation's imagination. Whether you long for an epic Western roadtrip or you're just here for the vintage kitsch, this episode will have you reaching for the keys. Where Route 66 takes us: Oatman, Arizona: Stop to cuddle the adorable baby burrows in this old mining town. Kingman, Arizona: Home to the Arizona Route 66 Museum, where Model T's roll in from Chicago and tourists arrive from around the globe. Peach Springs, Arizona: The heart of the Hualapai Nation, where the tribal market is the unofficial town square. Williams, Arizona: Vintage neon signs dot one of the most authentic main streets on the route. Two Guns, Arizona: An abandoned zoo where the murderous owner was mauled by his own mountain lions. Winslow, Arizona: The sandstone canyon where Easy Rider and The Grapes of Wrath were filmed, plus a classic Diné trading post. Acoma Pueblo, New Mexico: Dubbed Sky City, this mesa-top village is the oldest continuously inhabited community in the U.S. Guest: Will Grant Born and raised in Colorado, Will Grant brings a cowboy-philosopher's eye to the landscapes, characters, and histories that make the West unlike anywhere else on earth. After college, he worked as a cowboy and a horse trainer in Colorado, Wyoming, and Texas, where he apprenticed under the legendary horseman Jack Brainard. In 2008, he pivoted to a career in journalism, but he continues to seek out ways to combine horses and storytelling. His 2023 book, The Last Ride of the Pony Express, recounts his 2,000-mile journey along the famed mail route with his horses Chicken Fry and Badger. Other adventures include a 600-mile horse race across Mongolia, an expedition to find gold in Arizona, and two trips to Kyrgyzstan to play kok boru, the most dangerous horseback game on the planet. For Via, Will traded his saddle for a steering wheel to investigate some of the most storied—and strangest—stretches of Route 66. His writing has also appeared in Outside magazine, Bloomberg Businessweek, the Wall Street Journal, and regional publications throughout the West. Will currently lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico, with his partner, Claire Antoszewski, and two dogs, three chickens, and five horses. Via Podcast is a production of AAA Mountain West Group.

On a cold December morning in 1969, a motorist pulled into an all-night Shell station near Glenarm, Illinois, along old Route 66. Inside, the counter was empty. In the storeroom, 18-year-old David Burch Jr. was found dead. What began as a late-night robbery became one of Sangamon County's most haunting murder cases: a young attendant killed on the graveyard shift, a father and son accused of the crime, a death sentence, and an abandoned station left rotting beside the changing highway. This is the story of David Burch, Tuttle's Shell Service Station, and the dark side of America's Mother Road.Check out our new American Hauntings Podcast Network for even more spooky shows.Have a question or comment? John Steinbeck called it “The Mother Road.” Songwriter Bobby Troup said it was where to go to get your kicks. Mickey Mantle swore, “If it hadn't been for Highway 66 I never would have been a Yankee.”The Kitchen Sisters spent the summer of 1984 traveling every inch of this storied highway — “The Main Street of America” — as it was closing, recording just about everything that moved between Chicago and LA and made a series of epic radio documentaries to commemorate the legendary road and what it meant to the nation. If I remember right we paid about $1.20 a gallon as we motored east to west.In the summer of 1985 the road was officially removed from the United States Highway system and NPR's All Things Considered aired our series of stories about the life and history of Route 66 filled with interviews with dozens and dozens of Americans whose lives intersected with The Mother Road, along with field recordings, archival audio, music and sound. As Route 66 turns 100 we dipped into our archive to share these poignant and lively time capsules for your next road trip and your summer listening pleasure. Our narrator is actor David Selby.

Route 66, known as “America's Main Street” is not the longest or most-travelled American highway. Fully paved in the 1930s, it became a Depression-era migration route for poor farming families fleeing the Dust Bowl for a new start in California. It's been featured in popular media for decades. Kathleen Franz, lead curator at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History, unpacks more of the road's history. And, the 1973 album “A Grain of Sand: Music for the Struggle of Asians in America” was one of the first recognized musical albums expressing Asian American identity. It's often considered a blend of political statements within a collective art project. Sojin Kim, curator of the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, details the album's legacy.See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for sponsorship and to manage your podcast sponsorship preferences.NPR Privacy Policy

Apple News Today is off for Memorial Day. In place of our usual show, we're bringing you something special: a story from Los Angeles Times staff writer Christopher Reynolds about the epic road trip he took on Route 66 — driving all the way from Chicago to Santa Monica — and the people he met along the way. Narrated by Dan Bittner for Apple News+.
Today's story: Route 66 was created in 1926 as part of America's new national highway system and soon became a symbol of freedom, migration, and adventure. The highway helped farmers transport goods, guided Dust Bowl migrants west to California, and later became famous for family road trips, roadside attractions, and American car culture. As Route 66 celebrates its 100th anniversary, towns along the historic road are honoring its lasting influence on travel and tourism. What does it take to stay creatively productive for five decades? In this episode of Productivity Smarts, host Gerald J. Leonard sits down with Annette LaFortune Murray, storyteller, educator, and Route 66 expert, to unpack the habits and mindset behind five decades of prolific, purposeful creativity. Annette shares how she spent years researching the life of Cyrus Avery, the visionary behind America's most iconic highway, and how that deep dive transformed her approach to writing and productivity. From structuring her peak energy hours (8 to 10 AM) to using the BIC (Butt in Chair) method, Annette reveals how she balances disciplined focus with intentional breaks, field trips, and real world inspiration. She discusses overcoming writer's block by "trying on a new hat," using virtual writing communities on Zoom to combat isolation, and organizing research with visual templates borrowed from award winning authors. Annette also emphasizes the power of mentorship, peer critique, and reading work aloud to sharpen its impact. Her four keys, listen and look, write down the thought, stay happy with your work, and read it aloud, offer a practical framework that writers and creators at any stage can apply immediately. Welcome to Erick, Oklahoma—the "Town of Legends" that packs more history and "cool factor" per square foot than almost anywhere else on the Mother Road. In this episode of The Only in OK Show, we're stopping at the corner of Route 66 and Sheb Wooley Ave to explore the 100th Meridian Museum. Housed in a stunning 1907 bank building, this museum is the guardian of the "## Title: The 100th Meridian Museum: Where the West Begins (and Texas Ends?) Description Welcome to Erick, Oklahoma, the "Town of Legends" that packs a serious punch for its size. Known as the home of Roger Miller (King of the Road) and Sheb Wooley (The Purple People Eater), Erick is a must-visit stop for anyone cruising the Mother Road. In this episode of The Only in OK Show, we explore the 100th Meridian Museum. While many travelers pull off I-40 hoping to find the now-closed Roger Miller Museum, they actually discover something even more fascinating right across the street. What we cover in this episode: The Great Divide: What is the 100th Meridian? We dive into the "line in the sand" that separates the humid East from the arid West and the 166-year-old boundary dispute between Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle. The Historic First National Bank: Housed in a stunning 1907 building on the corner of Route 66 and Sheb Wooley Ave, we look at the quirky architecture (and why the back 20 feet of the building is suspiciously plain). A Steward of Legends: Since the Roger Miller Museum closed, the 100th Meridian Museum has taken over his legacy. We talk about the memorabilia, prehistoric Native American artifacts, and the cowboy trail drive history housed within. The Personal Touch: Meet the storytellers! Volunteers like Curtis and C.R. provide guided tours that bring the "weird and wonderful" history of Erick to life. Pro-Tip: This museum isn't your typical 9-to-5. It is often open by appointment only! Call ahead at 580-799-5054 or 580-526-3221 to ensure you get the full tour. Admission is FREE, but don't forget to leave a donation to help these amazing local volunteers preserve Oklahoma history. After your tour, walk a block down to the Sandhills Curiosity Shop to keep the Erick vibes going! 100th Meridian Museum on Facebook Also discussed: Enid SOS - Rock Creek Entertainment District - Norman, OK - KOCO - Tacoville #OnlyInOK #Route66 #ErickOK #OklahomaHistory #100thMeridian #RogerMiller #KingOfTheRoad #TheMotherRoad #ExploreOklahoma #TravelOK #SmallTownLegends
