What is "Ancient Media Culture"?

In the 1st century, very few people "read" the Hebrew scriptures. Instead, they were "heard" — read aloud (or performed) in the synagogue and other spaces. In this episode, Catrin Williams joins Helen and Dave to discuss "ancient media culture," the different ways that people consumed biblical texts in the time of Jesus, and how literacy, orality and "aurality" were in constant conversation. If you're curious, here's the mysterious Greek/Hebrew amulet that was found near Caernarvon fort in Wales. Catrin will get to the bottom of it. The ‘Tank, Medium Gun, FV221’, otherwise known as ‘Caernarvon’, appeared in the early 1950s and was a mating of an FV200 series chassis and the turret of an Mk. III Centurion. It was designed as an interim vehicle to fill the gap while Britain’s first Heavy Gun Tank, the FV214 Conqueror, was in the final stages of development. Decades later, in 2018, and despite the real FV221 Caernarvon already being present, the popular online game World of Tanks (WoT) - published and developed by Wargaming (WG) - was looking for a new premium tank (a vehicle bought with real money that provides special in-game benefits) to add to the British ‘tech tree’. The result was a ghastly blend of 4 separate parts (engine, turret, armor plates and hull), all to create a fake tank with a double fake name. It is known in-game as the Caernarvon ‘Action X’. While all of the constituent parts used to make this tank did exist in one form or another, they were never put together in this way. Article: https://tanks-encyclopedia.com/coldwa... ..and to the 7th track on my album…”Tribute to Ricky Nelson”….I’ve always been a huge fan of the guy..preferred him to Elvis in the 50’s…so I thought he deserved a place on my CD….it tells of how his love songs brought us all through the dark times after just being chucked by the love of your life…sit in a dark room with your Dansette and put on “Lonesome Town”…problem solved. the weather here has been very hot…great for sailing and all outdoor activities…EXCEPT for the poor pensioners….this country has to be top of the charts for moaners…a few weeks back it was too cold and the poor pensioners needed looking after (The one’s who aren’t cruising round the Medi that is)…now they are too HOT and need looking after…in case they de-hydrate…next thing will be the droughts…what does it take to make some people happy…beats me. ..The Open Golf Tournament is upon us…..and Hoylake is buzzing…I decided to go out in my kayak on Thursday and row on the Dee alongside the Royal Liverpool in the hope of getting on the tele….but to no avail…it’s the only way I’ll ever appear at the Open….I don’t quite get the attraction of watching live golf when it is so much better on the tele…anyway it looks like being a big success. Have you been watching?...some great shots of Hoylake from the air….but I wish they would stop calling it THE Wirral…..it’s WIRRAL!! .We went over to Liverpool in the week to buy some electrical stuff from Maplins…the service was superb and the guy who served us was a scream…amongst the stuff we bought an extending window scraper for a fiver…as it was so long they offered to deliver it FREE…it arrived NEXT DAY…I have written to Maplins and thanked them for great service which I didn’t think existed anymore. .On a similar subject we went to Wetherspoons in Caernarvon and had two delicious mixed grills…AND a bottle of quality wine…all for 15 quid….it’s hard to believe the value of the place…and it’s less than two quid a pint!!!....I’m a fussy eater but I can’t fault Wetherspoons…this is the reason they are always full and all the other places are empty….wonderful.

We both watched the documentary on Agnetha Falskog (the ABBA blonde)….for 63 she still looks good…….however we were a bit disappointed …didn’t tell us anything we didn’t already know…she never even mentioned Anafrid so all in all it was a bit of a damp squib…she has got a new solo album out and …she has done a duet with Gary Barlowe who suggested they do the song live at some stage…. Also there was a documentary on the history of The Eagles…very interesting…they never quite hit it off at any stage but the music was great…groups?...….it’s the constant pressure that gets through to you which is what audiences don’t see. Another light aircraft has crash landed in the midlands…fortunately there were no fatalities….one hit some trees at Caernarvon airport a few weeks back…it was hired from Blackpool and the hire company said it must have been pilot error because that particular plane had done over a MILLION miles without any problems…and has been regularly serviced…I know nothing about planes but I don’t think I’d get in a CAR with a million miles on the clock……..and those electric cigarettes may be taken off the market…because they could be regarded as medicinal….ciggy companies losing a bit of money then?...I thought the government were trying to get people off cigarettes?...which is what these things are supposed to do….maybe I’m wrong. Blurred Lines .... which is top of the charts…and the dodgy lyrics… finally….Status Quo are back on tour…and they have made a film….…they are pop royalty…..Rick Parfitts said he took some steroids to combat a skin infection and his hair suddenly started to fall out…

This cover was performed by Walt McClement on banjo and Mary Go Round (the one time holder of the world record for spinning the most hoola hoops at once: 76 if my memory serves me correctly) on accordion and vocals. The song All the Pretty Horses is about the and the Army Corps of Engineers decision to dynamite the levee at Caernarvon, Louisiana to save New Orleans. The breach caused a flood that displaced thousands and was later deemed unnecessary. Check out the book   I recorded this late one evening in the upstairs of Mimi’s in the Marigny in New Orleans.
