In ‘Resurrection Roots, Servant Life’. Rick explores how Jesus' death and resurrection reshape what it means to live a life of purpose, significance, and service. Rooted in Mark 9:30–37, he teaches that a true Christian life is built on the miraculous foundation of resurrection and expressed through humble servanthood. The resurrection isn't just a belief—it's the root of the Christian life. And the fruit of that life is servant-hearted living. Rather than striving for worldly greatness, Jesus calls us to follow him in humility, service, and supernatural hope. The post Rick Robertson: Resurrection roots, servant life first appeared on Jubilee Church Wirral.

Tim Hughes of Jubilee Church Wirral reflects on spiritual experiences where God feels tangibly present, using a U2 concert moment as an opening illustration. He suggests that all humans long for experiences beyond the material, pointing to the existence of God, specifically the God of the Bible. For you, that might not be U2 playing Where the Streets Have No Name, but it’s likely to be something. Tim talks about how how God meets Moses and Elijah on Mount Sinai and Peter, James, and John on Mount Hermon, revealing his divine glory. All three stories highlight humanity's longing for God, the ways God chooses to reveal Himself, and the ultimate fulfilment of that longing in Jesus Christ. Tim encourages us to seek God's presence above all else, listen to Him, and trust His plans. The post Tim Hughes: When God walks in the room first appeared on Jubilee Church Wirral.

Dave Frodsham of Jubilee Church Wirral on why the resurrection of Jesus demands a personal decision for us today. Dave reiterates the fact that we must decide what we believe about Jesus – is he Lord, liar, or a lunatic? He emphasises that there is strong historical evidence for Jesus' life, death, and resurrection — more reliable than many accepted historical records. If Jesus really rose from the dead, it validates his claims and demands a response. If you want to trust Jesus, salvation isn't about having everything together—it starts with confession, belief, and a decision. Andrew Chu reflects on the trial of Jesus from Mark 14:43 to Mark 15:20, breaking it into four parts to explore how Jesus' identity remains unshaken, even as everything is stripped away from Him—status, followers, reputation, and support.. Andrew talks about how we often talk about our families or our jobs when we first introduce ourselves to people and talk about who we are. But what happens when these things are taken away? Are we still the same person? During the week leading to His crucifixion, Jesus loses everything—respect, voice, position, friends. Yet he remains fully Himself: Rabbi, Prophet, King, and Friend. His identity is not built on what others say or take from Him – and because He held onto who He was, we are now free to find who we are in Him. In ‘A different type of king’, Dave looks at Mark 11: 1-26, when Jesus enters Jerusalem. Jesus enters Jerusalem not on a war horse, but on a young donkey, fulfilling the prophecy in Zechariah 9:9 (Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.) Jesus is powerful, yet humble, fully God but also fully obedient. Unlike arrogant leaders or self-important athletes, Jesus doesn't seek to impress with status—he serves and submits to the Father. Dave challenges us to look at how we see Jesus and how He sees us.• Do we serve Him as King or expect Him to serve our desires?• Do we offer genuine worship or hollow routine?• Jesus seeks authentic hearts, not religious appearance. Jesus is not the king we expect, but the king we need — humble, holy, powerful, and patient. Palm Sunday invites us to see Him clearly and offer not shallow praise, but surrendered hearts. In ‘Peter's Decision’, Rick looks at Peter's declaration that Jesus is the Christ and the implications of truly following Him. He focuses on several themes:  The Identity of Jesus– Peter's recognition of Jesus as the Christ is a pivotal moment in the Gospel of Mark.– “Christ” is not a surname but a title meaning “Anointed One,” referring to the Messiah who had been prophesied about to come and save God's people.– Unlike the popular expectation of a political saviour, Jesus reveals that His mission involves suffering, rejection, and death. The Cost of Discipleship– Jesus rebukes Peter for thinking in human terms rather than God's plan, which includes suffering before glory.– Jesus challenges His followers to take up their cross, deny themselves, and follow Him, even when the path is difficult.– The eternal value of the soul outweighs temporary material gain — “What does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?” Personal Application– Like Peter, each person must decide who Jesus is for them.– True faith is not inherited but must be personally embraced.– The story of Desmond Doss in Hacksaw Ridge illustrates the decision to stand firm in faith despite opposition and difficulty. Finally, Rick emphasises that following Jesus is not about ease or worldly success but about trusting in Him, even through suffering. The call is to make a personal decision to acknowledge Christ and live sacrificially for Him. The post Rick Robertson: Peter's Decision first appeared on Jubilee Church Wirral.

In Approaching Jesus, Dave  looks at Mark 7: 24-37. Dave discusses two encounters Jesus had with Gentiles: 1. The Syrophoenician Woman – A desperate mother begs Jesus to heal her demon-possessed daughter. Jesus initially responds with a parable comparing Gentiles to dogs, emphasising that His mission is first to the Jews. However, the woman humbly acknowledges this but persists, demonstrating great faith. Jesus rewards her faith by healing her daughter.2. The Deaf and Mute Man – Jesus heals a man by using physical gestures, showing sensitivity to his condition. After healing him, Jesus instructs people to keep quiet, but they eagerly spread the news. Dave emphasises how, like the Syrophoenician woman, we should persist in seeking Jesus, trusting in His goodness. Though Jesus' mission began with Israel, His mercy extends to all who believe. He meets people where they are, serving their needs with love. The post Dave Frodsham: Approaching Jesus first appeared on Jubilee Church Wirral.

In this ‘In Conversation' event, Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester and Steve Rotheram, Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, discuss their new book, Head North, which sets out a vision for a more balanced and inclusive future for the UK. Drawing on their experiences in Westminster and local government, the Mayors reflect on the challenges of centralised decision-making, the impact of devolution, and the shortcomings of successive ‘levelling up' policies. With reference to their ten-point plan for reform, the discussion explores how shifting power away from Westminster could contribute to a more equitable distribution of opportunity and prosperity across the UK. Abouts the Speakers: Andy Burnham was first elected as Mayor of Greater Manchester in May 2017, re-elected for a second term in May 2021, and again for a third term in May 2024. Mr Burham's priorities for his third term include continuing to build a London-style integrated transport system, ending the housing crisis by 2038, offering a new technical education pathway as an alternative to university, and creating a new Live Well service. Before being elected Mayor of Greater Manchester, Mr Burnham was MP for Leigh from 2001. In government, he has held Ministerial positions at the Home Office, Department of Health and the Treasury. In 2008, he became Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, before returning to Health as Secretary of State in 2009. In opposition, Andy has served as Shadow Education Secretary, Shadow Health Secretary, and Shadow Home Secretary. Steve Rotheram began his political career when he was elected to serve as a councillor in 2002, representing Fazakerley ward on Liverpool City Council and held the ceremonial title of Lord Mayor of Liverpool through the city's European Capital of Culture year in 2008. In 2010, he was elected as the Member of Parliament for the Liverpool Walton constituency. While in Westminster, he led campaigns for justice for the Hillsborough families; in support of blacklisted workers; for compensation for those suffering from mesothelioma and asbestosis; and to change the law on the use of old tyres on buses and coaches. In 2017, Mr Rotheram was elected as the first ever Liverpool City Region Mayor, representing 1.6m people across the boroughs of Halton, Knowsley, Liverpool, Sefton, St Helens and the Wirral and was subsequently re-elected in 2021. In 2024, he was elected for a third term as Mayor. Mayor Rotheram has pledged to return to council housebuilding at scale, to increase foreign direct investment (FDI) into the region, to build three new train stations, and to launch a free pilot of artificial intelligence (AI) in local schools. He has also revised the region's net zero target to 2035 – the most ambitious target for a city region in the country.

In Working with a generous God, Rick considers the gospel of Mark, chapter 6 verses 30 to 44. This is the famous passage describing when Jesus miraculously provides for the crowd – ‘the feeding of the 5000’. In the message, Rick covers five key themes. God's generosity – The miracle demonstrates that God not only provides but does so abundantly, as seen in the leftover baskets of food. Faith in Action – The disciples doubted at first, but Jesus involved them in the miracle by asking them to distribute the food. Hardness of Heart – The disciples failed to grasp the full significance of Jesus' provision, as later shown when they struggled during a storm and did not connect it with the previous miracle (Mark 6:50-52). Practical Application – Rick encourages us to trust in God's provision, step out in faith with what they have, and develop a heart that expects God’s generosity in daily life. Modern Examples – Rick references George Müller, a Christian evangelist known for his faith-based provision for orphans, emphasizing the power of specific prayers and trusting in God's provision. Questions to consider How does the feeding of the 5,000 reveal God’s generosity, and how does this challenge the way we trust in His provision today? The disciples focused on what they lacked, while Jesus asked them to bring what they had. How can we shift our mindset from scarcity to faith in God's abundance? Jesus chose to partner with the disciples in this miracle rather than acting alone. What does this tell us about the way God works in our lives and ministries?  In John 6:32-35, 40 – Jesus points beyond physical provision to Himself as the Bread of Life. How can we grow in relying on Jesus for spiritual nourishment rather than just seeking solutions to our immediate needs? https://jubileechurchwirral.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Rick-Robertson-Working-with-a-generous-God.mp3 The post Rick Robertson: Working with a generous God first appeared on Jubilee Church Wirral.

Dave looks at Mark 7: 1-23. He talks about how, during the COVID-19 pandemic, handwashing became a significant practice, with people learning proper techniques, such as washing for 20 seconds or using hand sanitiser. While initially seen as an imposed rule, it was ultimately beneficial for public health. Mark 7 is an account of a time when the Pharisees criticised Jesus' disciples for not washing their hands before eating – but not because they were concerned about hygiene; the Pharisees’ concern was about religious tradition rather than true obedience to God. Jesus calls them hypocrites, quoting Isaiah, and pointing out that they prioritise human traditions over God’s commandments. External rituals do not make a person pure or impure; rather, it is what comes from the heart—evil thoughts and actions—that truly defile someone. This teaching shifts the focus from outward religious practices to inner transformation and righteousness. Dave challenges us to consider whether we are following religious traditions or truly seeking God with sincere hearts. Righteousness is not about rituals but about integrity, humility, and love for God and others. https://jubileechurchwirral.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Dave-Frodsham-Lip-service.mp3 The post Dave Frodsham: Lip service first appeared on Jubilee Church Wirral.

In episode 29, Johnny talks to Dave Wain, one of the last bastions of the video rental industry. Dave runs Snips Movies, one of the UK's last video stores. The shop, situated in the Wirral near Liverpool, boasts an impressive selection of over 15,000 movies, all available to rent for the great price of 3 for £5. The depth of the range available is eye-watering and is just the tonic against the dull, predictable and limited selections available on the popular streaming services. Johnny's talk with Dave covers the trials and tribulations of running a video rental store in the 21st century, an enterprise that's going from strength to strength with an ever-changing profile of appreciative customers. They also discuss the directors Joe Dante, Quentin Tarantino and William Friedkin, and they lift the lid on Orson Welles editing lesbian shower sequences for porn films in his spare time... Episode 47: Avril Devaney MBEAvril Devaney MBE was born in Lancashire and always knew as a child that she wanted to work with people, especially those who tended to be marginalised. She initially embarked on a pre social work course but applied for mental health nurse training after doing a placement on a mental health ward and realising that, in mental health care, your biggest clinical intervention is your relationship with the person you are caring for. She qualified in 1986 and worked her way up to a community sisters post where she was instrumental in developing the first community based drug and alcohol services. In 1999 she received the Queen's Nursing Institute Award for Innovation after establishing a mental health nursing service in police custody suites. In 2000 she was named as one of the top 100 nurses to mark the Queen Mother's 100th birthday. In 2001 she moved to North Wales and began to work in Cheshire and Wirral. By 2003 Avril had been appointed to the role of Director Of Nursing where she continued to innovate and find ways to help people live their fullest lives. In 2005 she met her future husband, Jim on a scuba diving holiday in the challenging waters of Scapa Flow in Scotland. They married and had their son Jamie in 2007 when Avril was 42. Avril also completed her MSC in Health and Social Care that same year.Avril established a link with a mental health ward in South West Uganda in 20010. Sadly Jamie died after a short illness during a family holiday and fundraising trip to Uganda in 2011. Determined to find the meaning in this terrible loss Avril and Jim, along with close friends and colleagues, established a charity in Jamie's memory that went from working with one hospital in 2011 to 25 hospitals by 2023 and has been instrumental in helping to shape and develop mental health care across Uganda - touching countless lives. In 2015 Avril and Jim adopted two boys, Alex and Daniel. Avril received an MBE in the Queen's New Year Honours 2016 for services to Mental Health Nursing after leading projects to challenge stigma and to establish the first smoke free hospital trust in England- helping to change attitudes and extending the lives of people with mental illness. Avril contributed to several national nursing initiatives and received the Chief Nursing Officer's Gold award in 2019. Avril retired aged 55 to spend more time with Alex and Daniel. She is now a full time mum, wife and jam maker. #HYGYSTPOD #haveyougotyoursh*ttogether #HYGYST #caitlinoryan #AvrilDevaneyMBEHave You Got Your Sh*t Together? with Caitlin O'Ryan, is a podcast that celebrates not having your sh*t together!
