Jeffrey Holland is probably best known for playing Spike in Hi-De-Hi!, also the stuffy footman James Twelvetrees in You Rang M'Lord? and as Mr. Parkin the Stationmaster in Oh, Dr. Beeching! When I heard that a campervan park is going to be up and running in central Christchurch, near Latimer Square —possibly in time for this summer— my first thought was that I'm glad I haven't spent more than $500,000 buying an apartment around there. Not even the developer's reassurances that campervan people aren't “yahoo types” made me feel any more excited about it. In fact, I think it's the last place we want to see something like this. And I'm pointing the finger squarely at the council for giving this development resource consent. Because just after I saw at the weekend that the council has failed to achieve its target of having 20,000 people living in the central city by this year, it's gone and given out consent for a campervan park. It's not as if people who have bought apartments in the city aren't having enough trouble as it is, finding more and more of the apartments around them being hired out as Airbnb accommodation. If someone's moved into the centre of town on the sell-job that they're going to be living in this community of people all wanting to embrace the downtown lifestyle - they're going to be feeling somewhat short changed, aren't they? Especially people living near Lattier Square who are finding out today that there's going to be a campervan park next door or down the road. So the gist is the Christchurch City Council has given consent for this park with space for up to 25 campervans on Gloucester Street – where the Stonehurst Hotel used to be. That came down after the earthquakes, there was also a hostel there and a small campground back in the day. The thing is though, that was then, and this is now. And since the earthquakes, there's been this big effort to get more people living in the centre of town. The council set itself the target of having 20,000 people living in the CBD by this year. We found out over the weekend that hasn't happened, and it's pushed out the deadline another four years to 2028. In the meantime, it's giving the green light for this thing - where people will be able to take their campervans and stay for up to four weeks. My opposition to it is based on a couple of things. The first one is gut instinct or gut reaction. I just don't buy this idea that just because you drive a campervan, it doesn't mean you're not going to be a pain in the backside to someone at some point. Just because you're a member of the motorhome association, it's not going to make you any less self-entitled when you cruise into town. And, despite what the developer behind this project is saying today, there is no guarantee that someone driving a campervan is going to give two hoots about the people living there. So that's my gut instinct telling me it's a bad idea. The other reason I'm opposed to it is that it flies completely in the face of what the council's supposed to be hellbent on achieving for Christchurch. It wants people living in the centre of town. It wants people opening their eyes and realising that the quarter acre section isn't the be-all and end-all, and that you can have a pretty decent life living in an apartment and making the most of what the central city has to offer. And a campervan park is completely at odds with the vision it's been trying to sell since the quakes. Talk about left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Episode 73: Comedy tonight! And comedy back then, particularly 26 April 1923... It's a royal wedding so the BBC celebrate in style, with a gala concert, sponsored by Harrods (yes, sponsorship on the BBC!), given by The Co-Optimists, the legendary interwar comedy troupe. The cast includes Stanley Holloway (later of My Fair Lady) and, weirdly, the ex of the prince getting married. Whoops. We also explore a landmark pre-BBC broadcast by The Co-Optimists, in the summer of 1921. It's London's first broadcast, and pretty much the only legal broadcast of 1921. We'll explain why, and you'll hear them in full flow. Plus, for those who prefer their comedy more recent, we've got comedy writers James Cary and Simon Dunn, as well as Hi-De-Hi's Jeffrey Holland, telling us about later BBC comedy from The Goons to Bottom, via Steptoe, Dad's Army and Roy Clarke's ovens. It's a lot to pack in, so it's a longer episode than we usually go for, but we trust you'll be entertained, or at least informed about being entertained, or educated about being informed about being entertained...   SHOWNOTES: Simon Dunn's books include Proctology: A Bottom Examination. James Cary's books include The Gospel According to a Sitcom Writer. Paul Kerensa's books include Hark! The Biography of Christmas - also available as an audiobook. In this podcast episode, we review the very final original content from the AYBS Universe. :( Your two podcast hosts had a lovely chat with Brian Slade, author “Simon Cadell: The Authorised Biography”, the beloved Hi-De-Hi actor. We received a delightful voicemail from the “Keeping Up Appearances: The Luxury Podcast” with chums of the pod William Hanson (from the “I Sexted My Boss” podcast) and Jonathan Vernon-Smith from the BBC “The JVS Show” programme. The staff has finally turned on Mr. Rumbold's managerial role. “Fanny Adams” is a phrase that translates to “fuck all” but points to a very tragic news event which was popularized by the English Navy regarding an 8 year old girl in 1867. What if there -was- a 3rd season of Grace & Favour/AYBS? We learn about the fate of Mrs. Rumbold. Mr. Molturd randomly announces that the lads from the pub have challenged the staff with a darts match! We try to explain how darts is played (visualize a pizza). Find old episodes of “Bullseye” on YouTube, the Darts Game Show from 1980s' UK! Sheep are being sold to the estate next-door. Mr. Humphries is proud of his Australian hat (sent from his penpal). Capt. Peacock's mysterious bite marks that Miss. Lovelock somehow is privy to. Enter the 1928 Daimler sedan. What is a “tax disc”? Percy the local police officer and Molturd's bribe. And the super cute freeze-frame of Billy Burden in this scene with a great big smile. The Vine Tree Pub was where the exterior shots of the episode were filmed in Norton, England. It's still open today and is a 14 minute drive away from Chavenage House (“Millstone Manor”). Apple orchards in the West Country of England generates excess apples which are then crafted into “scrumpy”- a high-octane alcohol. A quick history of why we call the graphite in pencils “lead”. Mavis can handle her scrumpy and “is just getting started”! Paul Humpoletz player Henry Heathcliff, Malcom's father. Mr. Brandon finally stumps Mr. Jeff: Paul Humpoletz also played one of the thieves in the “The Hold Up” from the original series 10: episode 3! And her past catches up with her again from Tiverton. A shoving match starts up; Rumbold and Henry step outside! Both men are posturing until Slocombe finally smashes Henry with her handbag. Dressed all in black, the staff try to sneak onto the neighbouring estate to spirit away the sheep. Mr. Humphries accepts Slocombe's cold cream! Marketing made men think cold cream was only for young women. Humphries tries to bribe a terrier dog with the tandoori chicken (which no one likes, including the dog). And the sheep find their way back to Millstone Manor! Happy ending! And the final lines of Grace & Favour: Peacock: “A large drink and a hot bath.” Slocombe: “Now that's real leadership that is”. Superfan John-Brian Hopkins on Twitter shared that the terrier in this episode was Wendy Richard's dog named “Shirley Brahams”. The terrier gets the final credit of the series! Have a listen here (https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2qeMec3m9AN6h0SDAtVjvA)! General Random Observations from the Week A young Jonno (pictured left below in a striking James Bond T-shirt) never did get the autograph of Ruth Madoc from Hi-De-Hi in the early 1980s in Bournemouth.....the one that got away! Little did Ruth know then the future stardom and fame that awaited that youngster on the global Podcast stage! NEW PODCAST THEME - INTRODUCING...Word Play at the Table! Elt invites Jonno to take part in a new word-based public consultation and community engagement game. Will it make the cut through to the final release? This week's words/phrases ARE: Root & Branch Mind Games Level Up Emerging Trends & Themes in Online Public Consultation and Community Engagement Jonno & Elt reflect on the GovTech summit which ran online yesterday. There is now a really clearly defined HUNGER for online participation and inclusion, this IS the moment! Plan for the long term, invest in technology! Invest in it now! Mug Awards of the Week In this new feature, Jonno will send out two mugs each week from the massive stash of Bang the Table merch he found in his cupboard. One is attributed to a perceived failure, one an overwhelming positive award! This week's mug winners and losers are; 1) Mug Loser: Matt Hancock, for turning up late to the GovTech Summit mainstage then straightening his tie as if the computer screen was a mirror. 2) Mug WINNER! The North West Regional Flood and Coastal Committee for launching a great new site in EngagementHQ. Hurrah! Project Launches of the Week in EngagementHQ Elt is really enthused by the launch of the Preston & South Ribble Flood Management Scheme (https://nwfrm.uk.engagementhq.com/), in particular the highly visual scheme overview page which you can see by clicking here (https://nwfrm.uk.engagementhq.com/preston-and-south-ribble-flood-risk-management-scheme). Jonno is really excited by US based McCandless & Me's Backyard Chickens Zoning Amendment project, here. He is even MORE impressed by US Marketing colleague Christie Cutter's natural ability to squeeze FOUR chicken related jokes into a single sentence whilst describing it. Another Bang the Table comedy superstar is born??? Stats of the Week 67% - This represents the number of people polled in the North who aren't confident about the UK Government's pledge to "Level Up" in the North over the next 4-5 years. Meldrew Moments Jonno has reasons (at LEAST 3) to be grumpy this week; 1) Lack of public consultation on cycling and footpaths. 2) Reading glasses: He owns 20 pairs so as to never be without a pair to hand, but can't find ANY of them. 3) Citizen's Assemblies. #DelibWave He is however very excited about (https://www.involve.org.uk/resources/methods) Involve's Toolkit of Participatory Methods which addresses the third point. Elt is grumpy about trolling, not just on Twitter and Facebook (other social media platforms ARE available) but extending into virtual conferences, with people taking personal agendas into online meetings and trolling guest speakers, which limits participation by other guests who are put off by it.

We'll be having regular (hopefully more than weekly) live watch-alongs, followed by a podcast with experts, thought leaders and interesting people to discuss not just the subject of the film, but the themes it covers and the ideas it brings forward.

My publisher in the seventies was called Mingard Music and it is where I befriended Angie McCartney (Paul’s stepmum) and her daughter Ruth…when they went to the States they suggested I go it alone which I did…I built an 8 track studio in my attic and paid for it by doing demos for people…I advertised in a national mag and ended up doing 200 demos….some of them were horrendous with customers simply singing the song in the bath etc..and I had to put it into shape….I was always helpful…one guy sent me a song to do called “My Old Man’s A Policeman” to the tune of My Old Man’s A Dustman….I told him I would alter a few chord progressions so he didn’t get sues and suggested he call it “Top Of The Cops”…which he did…it was still horrendous. Got a call from a guy who works on The One Show asking if they could use a small section of my YouTube song about Una Stubbs….as she was a guest on the show…I naturally agreed and they used a small section of the chorus when she was introduced….was somewhat hidden by the applause for her but hey nice one eh? I wrote this song many years ago and actually got a record deal from a major record company….which didn’t materialise so I recently re-recorded it and put it on YouTube and on one of my quirky albums…I also sent her a copy and she phoned me up and thanked me…a national treasure indeed… I have been watching repeats of the original Hi-De-Hi series and can’t believe how good it was…it’s hilarious….the wonderful cast and classic scripts…absolutely brilliant…unlike “Benidorm” which has totally lost it’s way…thank goodness it’s finished…a 5 year old could write a better script…and by co-incidence Ruth Madoc was in the last episode…talk about one extreme to the other…let’s hope that’s the last we see of it…total waste of air time. I had to smile at the news of the daughter of the Korean Airline boss stopping the plane because she didn’t like the way they served the nuts….I think she is one herself….she made the pilot back up and told the purser to get off the plane…she’s now in jail under the anti terrorist laws…you couldn’t write this…they should have included it in Benidorm….might have got a laugh for a change. There was a slight slip up on the tele recently….it involved a scam which set up Bradley Walsh…the idea was to book him for a talk and secretly set him up…the guy said Bradley wasn’t too happy as he thought he was going to get 10 grand….TEN GRAND!!!...for a TALK!!!!....Bradley Walsh!!!...this is the problem these days…anyone who pays out that sort of money wants a reality check…it’s scandalous….I remember back in the day we put a charity show on at a local theatre for sick kids…the top of the bill let us down so we rang up a well known comic….who agreed to step in….(as he obviously had nothing else on with the very short notice)…all the groups and dancers did it for nothing…this guy…who gave a third rate 30 minutes…wanted 1500 quid…personally I wouldn’t have paid him 15 pence….greedy greedy. There’s a big hoohah at the moment concerning the Chelsea fans who kept stopping this black guy from getting on the train in Paris….of course the press are straight in…it’s RACISM…and the guy has come up with the usual ”It’s because I’m black…etc”……

..and to the 7th track on my album…”Tribute to Ricky Nelson”….I’ve always been a huge fan of the guy..preferred him to Elvis in the 50’s…so I thought he deserved a place on my CD….it tells of how his love songs brought us all through the dark times after just being chucked by the love of your life…sit in a dark room with your Dansette and put on “Lonesome Town”…problem solved. the weather here has been very hot…great for sailing and all outdoor activities…EXCEPT for the poor pensioners….this country has to be top of the charts for moaners…a few weeks back it was too cold and the poor pensioners needed looking after (The one’s who aren’t cruising round the Medi that is)…now they are too HOT and need looking after…in case they de-hydrate…next thing will be the droughts…what does it take to make some people happy…beats me. ..The Open Golf Tournament is upon us…..and Hoylake is buzzing…I decided to go out in my kayak on Thursday and row on the Dee alongside the Royal Liverpool in the hope of getting on the tele….but to no avail…it’s the only way I’ll ever appear at the Open….I don’t quite get the attraction of watching live golf when it is so much better on the tele…anyway it looks like being a big success. Have you been watching?...some great shots of Hoylake from the air….but I wish they would stop calling it THE Wirral…..it’s WIRRAL!! .We went over to Liverpool in the week to buy some electrical stuff from Maplins…the service was superb and the guy who served us was a scream…amongst the stuff we bought an extending window scraper for a fiver…as it was so long they offered to deliver it FREE…it arrived NEXT DAY…I have written to Maplins and thanked them for great service which I didn’t think existed anymore. .On a similar subject we went to Wetherspoons in Caernarvon and had two delicious mixed grills…AND a bottle of quality wine…all for 15 quid….it’s hard to believe the value of the place…and it’s less than two quid a pint!!!....I’m a fussy eater but I can’t fault Wetherspoons…this is the reason they are always full and all the other places are empty….wonderful.

..and to the 7th track on my album…”Tribute to Ricky Nelson”….I’ve always been a huge fan of the guy..preferred him to Elvis in the 50’s…so I thought he deserved a place on my CD….it tells of how his love songs brought us all through the dark times after just being chucked by the love of your life…sit in a dark room with your Dansette and put on “Lonesome Town”…problem solved. the weather here has been very hot…great for sailing and all outdoor activities…EXCEPT for the poor pensioners….this country has to be top of the charts for moaners…a few weeks back it was too cold and the poor pensioners needed looking after (The one’s who aren’t cruising round the Medi that is)…now they are too HOT and need looking after…in case they de-hydrate…next thing will be the droughts…what does it take to make some people happy…beats me. ..The Open Golf Tournament is upon us…..and Hoylake is buzzing…I decided to go out in my kayak on Thursday and row on the Dee alongside the Royal Liverpool in the hope of getting on the tele….but to no avail…it’s the only way I’ll ever appear at the Open….I don’t quite get the attraction of watching live golf when it is so much better on the tele…anyway it looks like being a big success.

Iain Coyle surfs the feelgood factor, but still gets shirty with Ashley 'The Oracle' Blaker while admiring Simon from Blue look-a-like, Stephen Yemoh. This week they discuss the definition of 'short term', cats in recycling bins, the Harlem Globetrotters and the last game against the Billionaire's Boys Club.
