It's the biggest operation of its kind in US history, as the state tries to save its coastline which is vanishing at an alarming rate.We travel to the Mississippi River and the city of New Orleans to see how billions of dollars are being spent to fix the rapid land loss. The project to revert the Mississippi to its land-making pathways could restore ecosystems destroyed by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill and create buffers to protect against sea level rise and hurricanes. The Louisiana coastline is disappearing due to human-made and natural factors, such as leveeing the Mississippi for oil and gas infrastructure, erosion, and sea-level rises. And this is having an impact on local wetlands which are eroding, leaving communities vulnerable to storm surges and flooding. Produced and presented by Beth Timmins(Image: Oyster shells painted by members of the community as part of the shorelines project )

Sea otters (Enhydra lutris) once swam along the North Coast of California, but 18th- and 19th-century fur trappers nearly caused the species to go extinct. Statewide, only one remnant population of approximately fifty individuals was left in Big Sur by the 1930s. Today, thanks to concerted efforts, more than 3,000 sea otters call California home from that small initial remaining population. While recovery efforts have increased the overall population, sea otters are still only occupy a narrow belt, roughly from Santa Cruz to Point Conception, of their historic range. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service has studied the feasibility of sea otter reintroduction efforts and is hosting open houses across the North Coast to discuss potential reintroduction. Guests Chanel Hason of the Elakha Alliance and Andrew Johnson of Defenders of Wildlife join the show to discuss the vital role that sea otters play in ocean ecosystems and their work to facilitate sea otter introduction. Want to attend a meeting? Using Oyster Reefs to Protect Shorelines, with Claire Arre

Oysters' Role in Living ShorelinesOysters can serve as an important environmental solution to shoreline restoration. Oyster reefs can provide habitat for hundreds of marine species, improve water quality (as an adult oyster can filter up to fifty gallons of water a day), and protect against erosion and storm surges. Oysters also help stabilize sediments and wave energy, which reduces coastal erosion and the impacts of sea-level rise.  As filter feeders, oysters help remove excess nutrients from the water and maintain healthy water quality. This ecosystem service is especially important with urban and agricultural run-off entering waterways, as oysters filter excess nitrogen, which can help prevent harmful algal blooms. Oyster restoration is important for conservation as well, as within the past two hundred years nearly 85% of global oyster reefs have been lost from over harvesting, wetland loss, human development, pollution, and other anthropogenic factors. Oyster reefs also serve as natural flood control and sea-level rise solutions, and compared to man-made solutions like seawalls and levees, oyster reefs are more cost-effective and less disruptive to the environment. Oyster reef restoration is now being used for coastlines throughout the US, including New York, Moss Landing, and Newport Beach.Orange County Coastkeeper's ApproachOrange County Coastkeeper has led the shoreline restoration in Newport Beach since 2017, re-introducing both native Olympia oysters and native eelgrass. To build a habitats where Oysters could settle in Upper Newport Bay, Coastkeeper and its volunteers hand-sewed over 500 bags, using coconut coir, to transport 40,000 pounds of Pacific oyster shells. Many of the oyster shells were donated by local restaurants. Coconut coir is a natural fiber, allowing Orange County Coastkeeper to avoid introducing any plastics during the restoration process.  Since the initial restoration, CoastKeeper has been monitoring the restored oyster beds yearly and found signs of healthier and more sustainable coastline. The Orange County Coastkeeper has also worked to restore eelgrass in the Upper Newport Bay. Eelgrass is a shallow coastal seagrass and foundational species, as it provides habitat and food for many juvenile fish, lobsters, and shellfish. Eelgrass has been targeted for restoration because it provides many critical ecosystem services from oxygen production and nutrient cycling, to providing “carbon service”  as it absorbs carbon which helps fight ocean acidification. In 2012, Orange County Coastkeeper worked in collaboration with the Department of Fish and Wildlife staff at the Back Bay Science Center to plant 0.3 acres of eelgrass. The goals of their restoration were to increase the diversity or abundance of native species, establish a sustainable eelgrass habitat and restore the economic value of the recreational and commercial fishery in the Bay. The Coastkeeper's efforts have been successful: Upper Newport Bay now has over one acre of eelgrass habitat. Claire Arre is the Orange County Coastkeeper's Marine Restoration Director. In her role, she manages the shoreline restoration program and works to restore the health of Orange County waters. Arre graduated from California State University, Long Beach with a Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology and received her Master of Science degree in BIology from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. In her free time, Claire volunteers at Cabrillo Marine Aquarium as a Whale Watch naturalist. Additional SourcesOysters Could Be a Solution for Our Sea Level Rise WoesReport: Shellfish Reefs at RiskResearchers in Newport optimistic that eelgrass can reduce carbon and acidity in seawater

Over half of New Orleans is below sea level, and it used to be entirely above it. What is happening, how is it impacting the lives of those in Louisiana, and what can be done about it? Tune in for the answers, and learn: Why water levees speed up the rate of organic material decomposition, and why it's problematic Various ways in which land loss and subsidence occurs How trees offer resistance to storm surges Michael Hopkins is Assistant Director of Pontchartrain Conservancy (PC), a nonprofit organization whose aim is promote environmental sustainability and address serious environmental challenges in the Lake Pontchartrain Basin, a 10,000 square mile watershed in Louisiana. Over the past 100 years, more than 2,000 square miles of coastal Louisiana have disappeared, detrimentally impacting the lives of so many. Hopkins is a geologist whose focus at PC has been on coastal monitoring and restoration. Much of his work centers around subsidence, which is the gradual sinking of land. In this region of Louisiana, subsidence contributes significantly to various environmental issues. And while it is a natural process in a delta, the situation is this area is unique because it has been cut off from the Mississippi River, which means there is no source of new sediment to maintain land elevation.   Hopkins explains the details of his work and the restoration strategy at PC, which involves the science of bringing back ridges, marshes, and swamps, as well as a process called sediment diversion to combat land loss.   Press play for the full conversation and learn more at https://scienceforourcoast.org/. Five years ago, the Aage V. Jensen foundation deliberately flooded a piece of drained, coastal land at Gyldensteen on North Funen in Denmark. The dikes were opened in three places, the seawater flowed in and quickly covered a 214 ha area which had previously been agricultural land. Furthermore, a freshwater lake was created of 144 ha. Ever since, biologists from the University of Southern Denmark have followed the return of nature and observed how nutrients, greenhouse gases, flora and fauna in the wetlands have changed and developed ever since. This intentional flooding can be used as a case study to see the effects of sea-level rise.Susan Guldberg is a PhD student in the ecology group in the Biology Department at the University of Southern Denmark.Follow the project at bit.ly/33HlfioGet in touch with the podcast at scienceandbeers@gmail.comSupport the podcast at patreon.com/scienceandbeers See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
