Actress and disability campaigner, Liz Carr, is probably best known for her role as forensic examiner, Clarissa Mullery, in the TV crime drama, Silent Witness. She's also done comedy, theatre and even written a musical, about what she calls ‘assisted suicide'. Last year she fronted the award-winning BBC TV documentary, Better Off Dead, making the case against assisted dying.Born and raised in Merseyside, Liz Carr became seriously ill when she was seven and has used a wheelchair since she was eleven. Whilst studying law at Nottingham University, she got involved in politics, disabled rights and activism. As her public profile grew she became a powerful voice in the debates over assisted dying. As the assisted dying bill returns to the Commons this week, with MPs debating and voting on a series of contentious amendments, Mark Coles speaks to Liz's friends and colleagues about her acting, comedy and campaigning.
Buckle up for a wild ride through Premier League chaos. Man United's transfer saga takes center stage - is Cunha the missing piece or another false dawn? Arsenal faithful, hold your breath. Saka's loyalty hangs by a thread, with silverware the only glue. Liverpool's transfer window feels like Christmas, Easter, and your birthday rolled into one. Meanwhile, Spurs do what Spurs do best: keep us guessing with Postecoglou whispers. Oh, and apparently, one Nations League game is now the be-all and end-all for Ballon d'Or glory. Give us a break.Time to give Bruno Fernandes his due. The Portuguese maestro isn't just carrying the team; he's dragging them kicking and screaming from the jaws of mediocrity. Without him, United might be eyeing Championship fixtures next season. It's a sobering thought for the Red Devils. We're practically salivating over Liverpool's potential new signings. The Reds' midfield overhaul promises fireworks, but will it be enough to reclaim their throne? The beautiful game never fails to entertain, on and off the pitch. From tactical breakdowns to transfer talk, we're covering all bases in this jam-packed episode. Whether you're a die-hard supporter or a casual observer, there's something here to pique your interest and fuel your football debates. For more content, follow @CrushTalksSports | @BrianTalksFootball | @HighKicksSports. Caroline Stanley, Countess of Derby, is an English aristocrat, art historian, and philanthropist. Affectionately known as “Cazzy,” she is married to Edward Stanley, 19th Earl of Derby, and serves as the chatelaine of Knowsley Hall, the ancestral seat of the Stanley family in Merseyside. In this conversation, which also delves into topics ranging from medieval politics to family connections with William Shakespeare, she primarily discusses her edition of the remarkable travel journals of the 14th Earl of Derby, who travelled extensively in North America in 1824-25.
Katie Razzall presents some of the big stories in the media this week, including how the police in Merseyside changed their media strategy after a car ploughed into crowds attending a football victory parade in Liverpool. Rebecca Camber, who is security and crime editor at the Daily Mail and chair of the Crime Reporters Association, explains what is behind the shift.Travel presenter Simon Reeve joins YouTube influencer Alfie Watt, who won Race Across the World last year, to discuss the different media platforms selling the excitement of exploration to a range of audiences. And with news that ITV is to radically trim the air time of two of its long-running shows, Loose Women and Lorraine, presenter Kirstie Allsopp and media analyst Bella Monkcom from Enders Analysis discuss if there is a crisis in Britain's daytime TV sector.Producer: Lisa Jenkinson Assistant Producer: Lucy Wai
What can we say... Sadly, this pod isn't a laugh a minute, although Jemma does manage to squeeze in a little humour when discussing Marina's social algorithm which has taking scrolling to another level of doom. Jemma landed back from a few days away from the news to the harrowing events in Liverpool and the grim state of affairs that saw Merseyside police rush to declare the ethnicity of the suspect, yet seemingly this wasn't enough to placate the usual suspects who seemingly relish any opportunity to weaponize suffering for their own gain. Talk turns to the tragic events in Washington, where two Israelis were gunned down and Netanyahu's response which is a masterclass in gaslighting and responsibility shirking. The ladies discuss how the dehumanisation of Palestinians and devaluing of their lives has become so prevalent and share one powerful explanation by Israeli journalist, Gideon Levy. And while it was only last week that David Lammy declared suspended trade negotiations with Israel, just wait till you see what our UK trade envoy has been up to.
It took Merseyside police less than two hours to release information about the suspect who'd been arrested in the Liverpool parade crash which injured close to 50 people. The force told the public that it was a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area who had been detained. Right wing commentators and conspiracy theorists had already started speculating about the potential ethnicity and the motives behind the man alleged to have been involved. So was it sensible policing aimed at quelling the misinformation? Or did the decision reveal just how close we are to unrest - like we saw in Southport - spook the police into revealing more than they normally would? LBC's crime correspondent Andy Hughes assesses the mood within the police.Later, what if that much heralded "unprecedented" second state visit for Donald Trump never happened? Jon has heard that in Palace circles, there's an increasing suspicion that the carpet might not be rolled out for POTUS after all....The News Agents is brought to you by HSBC UK - https://www.hsbc.co.uk/

Join Jim Boardman and Jay Reid as they soak in the incredible atmosphere enveloping the city of Liverpool ahead of a monumental Bank Holiday weekend. The city is buzzing with events, from Radio One's Big Weekend to cruise liners docking, but most important of all it's the final game of the season - a formality to go through before that long-awaited trophy lift, ahead of the victory parade through the city's streets on Monday. For Jay, that trophy lift is an especially poignant moment; it's the first time in his lifetime he'll witness Liverpool lift the league trophy at Anfield – a ticket he wouldn't sell for any price. It's the first time the Reds have lifted the league trophy in front of fans at Anfield for 35 years, so a large chunk of the Liverpool support are in the same boat. Two of the greatest centre-backs in football history will be on the pitch as the trophy gets lifted, with true club legend Alan Hansen set to present the trophy to future club legend Virgil Van Dijk, adding to the symbolism of the occasion. Jurgen Klopp will be there too, keeping to his promise of coming back but not in a way that would interfere with the work of Arne Slot. No surprise he's there; he's as big a fan as any of us, and every fan wants to be there. If only - but Anfield, as big as it now is, can't possibly contain every Red who wants to be there on Sunday. In fact, if estimates of how many people are heading into the city for the weekend are true, 16 Anfields wouldn't be enough. No problem though; the city is ready to showcase its unique, welcoming spirit and show how it throws a party, as the Reds' heroes show that trophy off from the top of a bus! The last match itself sees Liverpool host Crystal Palace. With both teams in a celebratory mood (Palace fresh from their own FA Cup triumph), Jay and Jim are wondering if it's even worth bothering with the footy itself. Jim and Jay reflect on a season where Liverpool exceeded expectations to clinch that title, but with transfer windows set to open, work needs to be done to ensure new expectations are met. No Red expected Slot to be so successful so soon - but all Reds want more of the same. The hosts briefly discuss some of the transfer rumours swirling around potential incomings like Frimpong and Kerkez, and possible departures including the respected Joe Gomez and potentially Darwin Nunez. Since the show was recorded, rumours about Florian Wirtz leaving Germany for Merseyside have gathered pace, but until he's had his photo holding up his new shirt, Jay and Jim are assuming nothing. There's also discussion on manager Arne Slot's latest press conference, particularly his comments on Trent Alexander-Arnold's training and defensive application, and how the media has portrayed this. The hosts touch on how Trent might be received and the importance of focusing on the collective celebration. What advice would the hosts give Arne, if he asked, on how to handle this last bit with Trent? As for that victory parade, the hosts offer some tips for fans wanting to catch a glimpse of the champions. It's a time to savour the moment, celebrate a hard-won title, and look forward to what the future holds for the Reds. As always, there's plenty to laugh about from across the park, although you aren't likely to find any of them there as the A55 clogs up under the weight of a blue-tinged exodus to North Wales. Sunday will also mark the final match for George Sephton, the iconic 'Voice of Anfield'. His voice has boomed around Anfield for decades, since the days the Reds were winning titles almost every season. He really is and has been part of Anfield - he's been there for the good times and the bad, and it really won't be the same without him. Thanks for everything, George, from all of us. He took us way back to his childhood in Merseyside, where the magic of the 60s and the ever-present soundtrack of The Beatles became deeply ingrained. It wasn't a distraction from anything, but more of an exploration of that incredible era's creativity and optimistic spirit. Imagine growing up a stone's throw from the Tower Ballroom where The Beatles and The Rolling Stones were tearing it up!Greg shared how his deep dives into artists like Bowie and Dylan fueled his passion for understanding the evolution of music. This meticulous approach would later come into play in unexpected ways. Then, we took a turn into the vibrant world of early UK street dance with Broken Glass. Greg recounted how a chance encounter with Kermit (later of the Rap Assassins and Black Grape) led to managing this groundbreaking breakdancing crew. Their "street tour" of the Northwest sounds legendary, breaking down barriers and even sparking connections across racial lines in a time when such interactions were less common in some areas. He fondly remembers seeing young white and black kids connecting over the music and dance – a real moment of positive social impact. The conversation then shifted to the emergence of the Ruthless Rap Assassins. Greg vividly described the raw energy and unique attitude of their early tapes, particularly the track "We Don't Care." Their originality and unexpected humor immediately grabbed him, leading to him taking on management and production duties. He walked us through their journey, from getting studio time to eventually signing with EMI – a "mad" move for such an uncompromising act.The story of their time with EMI is a rollercoaster, from creative freedom with their first album ("Sample City" with its insane sample layering – think Hendrix, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ringo Starr, Happy Mondays, and even Sergeant Pepper!) to the clash with the main marketing department who, fresh off the success of MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice, didn't...
For the final episode in our Anthropy special series, we speak with Paul Nowak, General Secretary of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), representing 48 unions and 5.5 million workers across every sector of the UK economy. Paul shares a powerful perspective on ensuring a just transition to a sustainable economy, drawing on his personal experience growing up in Merseyside during the industrial changes of the 1980s and 1990s. He discusses the importance of bringing workers to the table when planning for sustainability transitions, the role public services can play in reducing emissions, and why skills development is crucial to sustainable economic transformation. Paul argues that without fairness at the heart of the transition, we risk having no transition at all.
Today we're joined Merseyside's very own, Crawlers, an incredible band that you will no doubt have seen playing sold out shows and festivals all across the world and who's music has captured the hearts and minds of a generation. While you might already know that they're signed to Polydor Records and no strangers to sharing stages with bands like My Chemical Romance and Jane's Addiction, it might come as a surprise as to how much Retro Gaming has played an important part in their lives growing up, and how it continues to provide inspiration both on and off the tour bus.I sat down with Holly, Liv, and Harry to talk about all things Zelda, speedrunning classic resident evil games, taking Pokémon Nuzlocking rules to the next level, how video game music influences the writing process, and much more.
Fáilte ar ais chuig eagrán nua de Ar An Lá Seo ar an 12ú lá de mí Bealtaine, liomsa Lauren Ní Loingsigh. I 1978 tháinig nuacht amach nach raibh in ainm a bheith amach chuig an phobail ón rialtas faoi chás á fhiosrú ag na Gardaí. I 2000 bhí an Bank of Ireland ag pleanáil chun 40 áis a dhúnadh ach ní dúirt siad aon rud faoi aon phost. I 1989 bhí treocht ann chun post a thabhairt chuig daoine óga le pá níos lú nó post páirtaimseartha a thabhairt dóibh mar go raibh siad ag iarradh obair. I 2000 bhí an corp de Damien Monahan ag teacht isteach chuig aerfort na Sionainne do sheirbhís sochraide ina baile Inis don deireadh seachtain. Sin Britney Spears le Oops! I Did It Again – an t-amhrán is mó ar an lá seo I 2000. Ag lean ar aghaidh le nuacht cheoil ar an lá seo I 1968 bhí Brian Jones le The Rolling Stones don uair dheireanach nuair a chan siad ag ceolchoirm New Musical Express Poll Winners sa Bhreatain. Bháigh é nuair a bhí drugaí agus alcól ina chóras nuair a chuaigh sé I gcóir snámh I mí Iúil 1969. Fuair sé bás ag aois 27. I 2000 ghoid daoine na geataí den Strawberry Fields sainchomhartha ó amhrán ó The Beatles. Fuair siad na geataí ag mangaire dramh-mhiotal sa Learpholl cúpla lá tar éis. Agus ar deireadh breithlá daoine cáiliúla ar an lá seo rugadh Tony Hawk I Meiriceá I 1968 agus rugadh aisteoir Rami Malek I Meiriceá ar an lá seo I 1981 agus seo chuid de na rudaí a rinne sé. Beidh mé ar ais libh amárach le heagrán nua de Ar An Lá Seo. Welcome back to another edition of Ar An Lá Seo on the 12th of May, with me Lauren Ní Loingsigh 1978: Leakage of highly confidential Government papers were to lead to a major garda investigation. 2000: Bank of Ireland was planning to close up 40 branches but was not saying what this wouldve meant in terms of jobs. 1989: There was a growing trend among employers to offer low wage or temporary employment to a large pool of young people who were desperately seeking work. 2000: The body of dutch murder victim, Damien Monahan was to arrive in shannon airport this afternoon for a funeral service in his native Ennis at the weekend. That was Britney Spears with Oops! I Did It Again – the biggest song on this day in 2000. Onto music news on this day In 1968 Brian Jones made his final live appearance with The Rolling Stones when they appeared at the New Musical Express Poll Winners Concert at the Empire Pool, Wembley, England. Jones drowned while under the influence of drugs and alcohol after taking a midnight swim in his pool, on 3rd July 1969 aged 27. 2000 Thieves stole the gates to Strawberry Fields the Merseyside landmark immortalised by The Beatles song. The 10' high iron gates were later found at local scrap metal dealers in Liverpool. And finally celebrity birthdays on this day – Tony Hawk was born in America in 1968 and actor Rami Malek was born in America on this day in 1981 and this is some of the stuff he has done I'll be back with you tomorrow with another edition of Ar An Lá Seo.

Abdoulaye Doucouré joins Ben Foster and Tom Ochoa on the Fozcast to chat through a huge career that's taken him from Ligue 1 to the Premier League via Watford and now Everton. The boys talk about his experience under managers like Sean Dyche, Carlo Ancelotti and David Moyes, surviving relegation battles, and THAT moment in the Merseyside derby that ended in a HUGE scrap! But the big question... is Doucouré staying at Everton? He opens up on his current contract situation and what might come next
Dave Watson, Everton's most-recent trophy-winning captain, is Chris Beesley's latest guest on Goodison Park: My Home. The centre-half was the Blues' skipper when they defeated Sir Alex Ferguson's Manchester United side 1-0 in the 1995 FA Cup final and recalls an incredible story about what happened to the famous silverware that night after the Wembley victory. Scouser Watson, who grew up on Boundary Street, close to the new Everton Stadium, started his professional career across Stanley Park with Liverpool – for whom his brother Alex later played – but never made a first team appearance before joining Norwich City in 1980. While with the Canaries, he made his England debut, winning his first of 12 caps for the Three Lions, in a 2-0 win over Brazil in the Maracana Stadium before lifting the League Cup the following year. He returned to his home city in 1986 when Howard Kendall snapped him up for Everton for a then club record £900,000 fee and was part of their last League Championship-winning side in his first season at Goodison Park. Now 63, Watson made 528 appearances for the Blues – the third highest in history behind Neville Southall (751) and Brian Labone (534) – and also had a stint as caretaker manager in 1997 following Joe Royle's exit before having a season in charge of Tranmere Rovers in 2001/02 to serve all three of Merseyside's professional football clubs. Trevor Steven, the player who scored the goal that produced arguably the loudest roar in the Grand Old Lady's history, is Chris Beesley's latest guest on Goodison Park: My Home. Steven netted the goal that clinched Everton's place in the 1985 European Cup-Winners' Cup final when he sealed the 3-1 win over Bayern Munich in what is widely regarded as Goodison Park's greatest-ever night. Born in Berwick-upon-Tweed, Steven recalls his early football memories, growing up close to England's border with Scotland, before getting his big break in the professional ranks at Burnley, where he played alongside a previous Goodison Park: My Home guest Martin Dobson. Having been snapped up by fellow North Easterner Howard Kendall for £300,000 in 1983, Steven's first season on Merseyside finished with him delivering the cross for Andy Gray's goal to clinch the 2-0 victory over Watford in the FA Cup final. The following season, the midfielder was part of Everton's most-successful side with a memorable goal at Tottenham Hotspur in the title run-in as well as scoring both in the semi-final second leg and final in Europe. Steven then went on to become top scorer in a second Blues' League Championship-winning side in 1987 before departing Goodison after the 1989 FA Cup final. Now 61, Steven, who in 1991 commanded the joint-highest fee for a British player at the time when he moved from Rangers to Marseille for £5.5million, also delivers an important message about how through his work with charity Mindflow, he is trying to use football to help improve mental health in the construction industry. Billi (@SGPSoccer) breaks down the Matchday 30 slate, which will see leaders Liverpool host Everton in the Merseyside Derby on Wednesday, while Chelsea and Tottenham resume their bitter London rivalry at Stamford Bridge on Thursday. Liverpool were being talked about as potential quadruple winners under two months ago, but in that time they have seen themselves eliminated from the FA Cup and the Champions League, swiftly followed by a shock defeat at Wembley in the League Cup final before the international break. Liverpool supporters will be hoping that the international break time has given them time to reset and regroup, and a triumph in the Merseyside derby would provide them a welcome boost in confidence as they canter towards the Premier League title.
