Guy talks to Brian O'Keefe about fly fishing around the world, traveling and photography. From Brian: I have had so much fun pretending to call fly fishing photography work, that I still describe this endeavor as a 'hobby out of control'. I sold my first fly fishing photograph when I was 16 years old, and let me tell you, that was a fairly long time ago. Since then, it has been my absolute pleasure to work with some of the finest publishers, magazine and photo editors and graphic artists in the world. I consider the following publishers of fly fishing photography some of the finest, and thank you for using me as a contributor: Field & Stream Magazine, USA Today, The Drake Magazine, Outside Magazine, American Angler Magazine, Orvis, Patagonia, Fly Fisherman Magazine, Outdoor Life Magazine, Catch Magazine, Fly Rod and Reel Magazine, Northwest Flyfishing Magazine, Voyage de Pesch Magazine, Oregon Tourism, Chile Tourism... I could go on and on, especially with the addition of blogs and all the websites for fly fishing lodges, products, travel companies, etc. It has been a good ride and thanks to everyone who has helped me along the way. I am more of a shoot from the hip photographer. I rarely use a tripod and I usually have to put down my fly rod or the oars to organize a shot. My style is basically editorial in nature and natural. I do not use professional models or fancy lighting. If I did, I couldn't call this a hobby out of control. I have a very deep collection of images. From my backyard pond, here in Oregon, to far flung destinations like Alaska, the Bahamas, Chile, Argentina, New Zealand, Tonga, England, Mexico, Belize, Sierra Leone, Christmas Island and many more. Every decent fly fishing photographer has these kinds of lists, also. But, I have a little more time on the water than most. For example, I have made over 50 trips to Alaska and over 30 trips each to the Bahamas and Belize. Let me know what you are looking for, I'll probably have it. Learn more about your ad choices. This week host Jeff Troutman talks with global traveler Jon Covich. Jon Covich has spent the last 25 years immersed in the fly fishing industry and has been one the Pacific Northwest’s tackle reps for the past 20 years. He currently represents Outcast, Thomas & Thomas Fly Rods, and Galvan Reels. In addition to his business as a tackle rep, Jon has traveled to many of the world’s best fly fishing destinations, as both an angler and a professional photographer. Jon is an expert on fishing and travel to Cuba, and works with Fly Water Travel as one of their travel consultants. Photos of his adventures have appeared in Outside Magazine, Grey’s Sporting Journal, Fly Fisherman, Fly Rod & Reel, and Catch Magazine. Jon lives in Seattle Washington with his wife and two sons. Jon first traveled to Cuba in the 1990’s to fish the newly opened Jardines de la Reina. Since then, Jon has been to Cuba more than twenty times, and has fished every important fishing destination on the island multiple times. “I absolutely love the fishing in Cuba, and can’t really think of another place in the world I have been that rivals it. Furthermore, I am fascinated by Cuban life, Cuban culture, and the time warp that exists on this island. On every fishing trip I try to build in several extra days in order to see places most tourists don’t, and to get a better sense of how Cubans live.” Episode Links: Jon@flywatertravel.com https://www.flywatertravel.com/

In this week’s podcast, I interview my old friend Brian O’Keefe, founder of Catch Magazine, on tips for catching warm weather steelhead. Brian is one of the best anglers and teachers around, and I think it’s a particularly helpful interview full of good solid information. Plus it’s always fun to have Brian on the podcast. In the fly box, we talk about “buddy fish”, the utility of stripping baskets, a recommended rod for moving up from trout fishing, plus other short topics.
This week I have a special guest, Brian O'Keefe, who owns the fantastic electronic magazine called Catch Magazine, along with his business partner Todd Moen. Brian has been in the fly fishing business as long as I have, and he's one of the best fly-fishing photographers out there. He's traveled all over the world to photograph some of the most exotic fly fishing locations, as well as plenty of cool places closer to home. We ramble a bit about the old days, but the podcast is mainly about tips for the novice fly-fishing photographer. This podcast is longer than usual so I left out the usual Fly Box section, which will return next week. Lots of good questions these days so I have a good list of topics to cover!
