"For you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness will rise, and there will be healing in its wings. You will go out and jump around like calves from the stall" (Malachi 4:2). Amen.Last Sunday afternoon, Matt and I took young Trapper to Casper Mountain to ride our side-by-sides. I'm blessed to have Bluetooth speakers in my side-by-side. So, I had him listening to my eclectic choice of music – Swing, Celtic, Home Free, Tophouse, Bodeans, and so on. One of the first songs that came on was "Sweet Caroline" by Neil Diamond. We both sang loudly to the song, especially the "ba ba ba" and "so good so good" parts. Later, Trapper asked, "Did we just listen to AC/DC followed by Johnny Cash?""Yes. Yes, we did."One of the last songs that Johnny Cash released was a song that reflected his Christianity and his reverence for God's Word. The title of the song is, "When the Man Comes Around." It's a song about Jesus' return on Judgment Day. It is filled with biblical references and pictures that Jesus will return, time is short, and the moment for serious reflection is right now. Here are some of the lyrics:Whoever is unjust, let him be unjust still. Whoever is righteous, let him be righteous still. Whoever is filthy, let him be filthy still. Listen to the words long-written down, When the man comes around. Hear the trumpets, hear the pipers. One hundred million angels singin'. Multitudes are marchin' to the big kettle drum. Voices callin', voices cryin'. Some are born and some are dyin'. It's Alpha and Omega's Kingdom come.Jesus is returning. St. Paul encourages the Christians in Thessalonica with this news. Paul had only been able to stay in Thessalonica for about three weeks before he was chased out of the city by the extreme persecution to the gospel of Christ. The Thessalonian citizens stayed and endured this persecution. Paul encourages them that their faith is growing more and more (2 Thessalonians 1:3), despite – and perhaps because of – this persecution. He writes, "This is evidence of God's righteous verdict that resulted in your being counted worthy of God's kingdom, for which you also suffer" (2 Thessalonians 1:5). How was their persecution evidence of God's righteous verdict?Paul assured the Thessalonians that God loved them, had forgiven them, and would continue to be with them. That was how God judged them. If they had caved in and not gone through the trials and persecutions they were called on to endure, God could not judge them worthy of eternal life. But because they had endured, God's judgment was right, and his judgment would be made public on the Last Day.How about you? Are you being persecuted for your faith in Jesus Christ? At work, at home, at school, in public, on social media? Are you bold and unapologetic about your faith? Do you wear your faith symbolically on your sleeve or physically on your T-shirt? Do people know you're a Christian with every move you make and every word you speak? When you face persecution – which you should because the world hates us because they hate Christ – that is evidence that you, too, are being counted worthy of God's kingdom, for which you suffer.Paul says that God makes a "righteous verdict". There are two things that God will do on Judgment Day because he is just and his verdict is righteous. First, God will judge us as worthy of eternal life because we held to Christ by faith. This verdict is ours, not because of anything we have done, but only because the Holy Spirit brought us to faith and kept us in the one, true faith. The only thing we "did" was not say "no" to this gift of faith. Second, God will punish the enemies of the gospel for all they've done to his chosen people throughout the history of the world. God will undo all the pain that sin inflicts on us, including the pain of persecution.St. Paul then goes on to explain how God's justice will come upon those who oppose his Son and the followers of his Son. "Certainly, it is right for God to repay trouble to those who trouble you, and to give relief to you, who are troubled along with us. When the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his powerful angels, he will exercise vengeance in flaming fire on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. Such people will receive a just penalty: eternal destruction away from the presence of the Lord and from his glorious strength" (2 Thessalonians 1:6-9).Paul says clearly that God will repay trouble to those who trouble you for your Christian faith. Why is God's justice important for Christians to remember as we suffer at the hands of tyrannical governments, demonic despots, unbelievers, pagans, social media bullies, and so on? As individual Christians, we don't take revenge. We follow Paul's advice to the Christians in Rome who were also being persecuted, "Do not take revenge, dear friends, but leave room for God's wrath. For it is written, 'vengeance is mine; I will repay,' says the Lord" (Romans 12:19-20).The Lord Jesus will bring his righteous wrath upon those who persecuted his people. We leave room for God's vengeance. Until then, we turn the other cheek (Matthew 5:39); forgive 70 times 7 (Matthew 18:22); pray for those who persecute us (Matthew 5:44); live as Christian salt to season a decaying world; and live as light in the pagan darkness (Matthew 5:13-16). God will bring trouble on those who trouble us. But we cannot be weak Christians, either. We put on the gospel armor, and we take the fight to the devil and his followers. Every day, I am sharing images on social media reminding Christians that we are in a war. Christ has called us to be his warriors, Christian soldiers, marching off to war, with the blood of Jesus going on before. This is a war Christ has already won for us. But it's one where we'll get hurt and bloodied in. We're going to be in trouble! What kind of trouble will those who trouble us receive? "Vengeance in flaming fire." Malachi describes this vengeance in a similar way: "The day is coming, burning like a blast furnace. All the arrogant and every evildoer will be stubble. The day that is coming will set them on fire, says the Lord of Armies, a day that will not leave behind a root or branch for them" (Malachi 4:1). "Eternal destruction." That seems like a contradiction, for how can destruction be everlasting? But there's no other way to describe the endless pain and torment there. "Away from the presence of the Lord." The worst part about God's justice is that unbelievers will be removed from God's presence. They will be outside, unwanted, and uncomforted.American culture has attempted to neuter God by taking away his justice. They imagine he's a divine grandfather sitting in heaven handing out candy and sweets to those on earth. He looks the other way when people sin. He tolerates all kinds of false religions. Society has attempted to emasculate God by emptying him of his authority. They have mutilated the God of the Bible by removing his wrath and only emphasizing his mercy. When the wrath of God is removed, then the central act in all human history has been emptied of its power and meaning. If God is not all that angry with sinners, then Christianity is nothing more than feeble moralism where we urge people to be a little nicer to each other. If Christ's death did not pay the terrible price for a world of human sin, then his death was nothing but a pathetic and weak act that can do nothing to change our lives. If Christ did not bear in his sacred body the wrath and punishment we deserve, then we are still in our sins and will endure God's wrath and punishment on the Last Day.The Bible balances the wrath of God with the mercy of God. If people accept God's mercy through Christ Jesus, they escape his wrath. However, if people refuse to receive the mercy of God for Christ's sake, then they will receive the wrath of God coming from the Lord Jesus in blazing fire.Take the time to bow your head and confess to God your sin of taking God's wrath upon your sin lightly.Private confession. Are you a Christian? Have you received and believe in Christ's mercy? Has God counted you worthy of his kingdom because of your faith in his Son?If you answered "yes" to those questions, then Judgment Day has already taken place for you. It took place when the ever-living Son of God hung dead on the cross. It took place when the guilty verdict was placed on him. When God the Father poured out his wrath on his Son. When God declared his righteous verdict of guilty upon Jesus. When the Father forsook, turned his back on, and abandoned his only begotten Son. When the punishment for humanity's rebellion was placed upon the thorn-crowned head, the scourged back, and the nailed hands and feet of Jesus Christ. All the judgment of God against humanity's sin took place on that one day, in that one place, on that One Man. On the cross. In the tomb. Under God's wrath. Your Servant took your place. Your King took your place. Your God took your place – as your Substitute – to set you free. And you are free. It is finished! God's judgment has been endured by Jesus so that you as Christians might receive God's pardon and forgiveness. God's wrath was poured out in history's past instead of being poured out in our eternal future. This verdict of freedom and this pronouncement of forgiveness is what you need to hear in church every week. For every week, as we gather in church, we have a small dress rehearsal for Judgment Day. Every week in worship is like a little Judgment Day as the King comes to us and tells us his judgment. He announces in the absolution, "I have forgiven your sins by my sacrifice." He reveals, "You are mine," every time we see the pastor make the sign of the cross reminding us of the cross that was placed over our hearts and heads at our baptism – the date when we became God's. In the Scripture lessons, sermons, and hymns Jesus declares, "I will either be your unrelenting Judge or your all-merciful Savior." When we taste his body and drink his blood in the Lord's Supper he proclaims, "I am giving myself to you."You will suffer for believing all this. The theme from the Scripture readings today is don't despair. God declares over and over again that there will come a time when those who have rebelled against him and brought trouble to his people will themselves have trouble, and God's believers will have relief. God will carry out his justice. We Christians may suffer temporally here on earth at the hands of unbelievers for our faith, but the unbelievers will suffer eternally in hell at the hands of a just God for their lack of faith. "Such people will receive a just penalty: eternal destruction away from the presence of the Lord and from his glorious strength, on that day when he comes to be glorified among his saints, and to be marveled at among all those who have believed, because our testimony to you was believed" (2 Thessalonians 1:9-10).Because of God's wrath there will be justice. And relief. What is the relief that all Christians are looking forward to? Eternal life in heaven where we'll be marveling at our Christ.Failing to recognize God's wrath can effectively trivialize God's power. Singing about God's wrath upon sinners serves as a direct reminder of God's mercy to forgiven sinners. That's why we sang of God's wrath and relief that comes on Judgment Day. Songs like "Great God, What Do I See and Hear," "The Day is Surely Drawing Near," and "Day of Wrath, Oh, Day of Mourning." Or even country songs like, "When the Man Comes Around."Last Sunday evening, I texted Ashley, Trapper's mom. I asked if Trapper enjoyed the ride. She said he did. I then wrote, "Great! I don't fault him if he said, 'I'll go with Pastor again. Just don't let him sing anymore!" She assured me he didn't say anything like that. When you suffer for your Christian faith, you might wonder, "Where is God's justice?" Just wait. It's coming. Maybe not now. Maybe not soon. But eventually. Eternally. The final justice will be on the Great Day of Judgment. God's justice will be our relief. Then God will repay trouble on those who trouble you. Amen."You will trample the wicked. They will surely be ashes under the soles of your feet on the day when I take action, says the Lord of Armies" (Malachi 4:3). Amen.View this sermon (with video and/or audio recording) on our website: https://www.casperwels.com/sermons/god-will-repay-trouble-to-those-who-trouble-you/

Bob Merlis ran the Warner Bros. publicity department for much of his 29 years at the label, and he has tales to tell. He recalls his adventures as a Columbia University student presenting concerts by the Byrds and others, as well as his rock journalist stint, his encounter with “supernova” Little Richard and a classic misunderstanding with the Carpenters. Soon he was working with Dion DiMucci, ZZ Top, Debbie Gibson, Talking Heads, Devo, the B-52's, the BoDeans, Madonna, R.E.M. and many others. Which act was the beneficiary of “the cheapest promo in the history of Warner Bros”? Who reacted hostilely to his publicity ideas? Who was especially cool? How did the label vibe change? After Merlis left Warner Brothers, what was Chris Isaak's valuable advice? And what role did late Rolling Stones/Beatles manager Allen Klein play in Merlis's next act?

What the Riff?!?

The industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails is the creation of singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Trent Reznor.  While living in Cleveland in 1987, Reznor worked as an assistant engineer and janitor at Right Track Studios.  He had free access to the studio between bookings, and took inspiration from Prince to play all instruments himself to produce his material.  The name Nine Inch Nails comes from a quote by Al Jourgensen, lead singer of the metal band Ministry - "Listening to Ministry is like having a nine inch nail hammered into your head like a hole."  The debut studio album entitled Pretty Hate Machine was released by TVT Records in October 1989.  It has an industrial synth feel, with dark lyrics driven by angst, despair, and betrayal.  Unlike much of the industrial rock of the time, songs on Pretty Hate Machine feature catchy riffs and hooks, and the song structure employs a traditional verse and chorus approach rather than continually repeating electronics.  The result would prove to be both a commercial and critical success, reaching number 75 on the US album charts.Although Reznor produced and performed all the instrumentation on the album, he soon found himself in need of a touring band, particularly when he was brought in to open for Guns N' Roses on their European Tour.  Many musicians have been brought into the Nine Inch Nails over the years, but Reznor remained the only permanent member until his frequent collaborator, Atticus Ross, was brought in as a member in 2016.Lynch brings us this pioneering industrial rock album for this week's podcast. Head Like a HoleThe opening track to the album was the second and most commercially successful single, reaching number 28 on the US Alternative Airplay charts.   It also took inspiration from the quote from Al Jourgensen of Ministry.  The song is about the control that money has over people and the pain and suffering associated with it.  Terrible LieThis song reflects the anger and despair of a person going through a bad time in their life and blaming it on God.  "(Hey god) why are you doing this to me?  Am I not living up to what I'm supposed to be?  Why am I seething with this animosity?  (Hey god) I think you owe me a great big apology."SinWhen we give in to our darker impulses, perhaps driven by desire or betrayal, we can find ourselves in a spiral of self-destruction and sabotage.  The song is about the pain and destructiveness that can lurk below the surface.Down In ItThis is the debut single from the album.  During the making of the video, a camera attached to a weather balloon became detached and flew 200 miles away.  When found in a farmer's field the FBI was called in to investigate what appeared to be a gang or cult slaying of Reznor. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the motion picture "Christmas Vacation 3" The success of "Christmas Vacation" inspired a number of sequels. STAFF PICKS:Higher Ground by the Red Hot Chili PeppersRob's staff pick is  a cover of a song Stevie Wonder originally released in 1973.  While the original went to number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100, the energetic remake by the Red Hot Chili Peppers also achieved commercial success, reaching number 26 on the US Mainstream Rock chart.  It was the first RHCP song to chart.Bad Love by Eric ClaptonBruce brings us the second single from Clapton's eleventh solo studio album.  This is a comeback album, as Clapton had recently become sober after dealing with alcoholism.  It hit number 16 on the Billboard 200 albums chart.  This song features Phil Collins on percussion and backing vocals.  and would be awarded the Grammy for Best male Rock Vocal Performance in 1990. Good Work by the BoDeansWayne features a rockabilly party song from a Wisconsin group.  The BoDeans have been called roots rock, heartland rock, and alternative, but their retro 50's sound and driving live performance makes them a great band to see.  They performed extensively with U2 on The Joshua Tree tour, and remain popular in the US Midwest. The Last Worthless Evening by Don HenleyLynch closes out the staff picks with a hit from Henley's album "The End of the Innocence" that went to number 21 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.  The lyrics are a plea from an ex to just move on.   INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Pacific 202 by 808 StateThis Manchester electronic music group takes its name from the Roland TR 808 drum machine.

We fix our gaze upon another of the legendary record labels of the O3L era, Slash Records. Slash was formed in Los Angeles in 1978 by the late Bob Biggs. Over the course of its 22 year run as an active label, Slash released slew of classics by the likes of The Germs, X, Violent Femmes, Fear, The Blasters, Los Lobos, Rank and File, The Del Fuegos, The Gun Club, Dream Syndicate, Misfits, Robyn Hitchcock, Burning Spear, BoDeans, Faith No More, Failure, Green On Red, Grant Lee Buffalo, L7, The Chills, Rammstein, Soul Coughing, The Verlaines, and more. Boasting such an eclectic and iconic roster, how are we possibly going to pick our Top 5 songs from the label? We'd better call in the reinforcement! We'll take "Great O3L Third Lads" for $1,000, Alex. "This talented singer/songwriter just released his highly anticipated brand new album, Mug, on one of the best modern indie labels, Big Stir Records." "Who is Dolph Chaney?" Yes, this week's Third Lad is rockin' Chicagoland indie-pop singer/songwriter/guitarist Dolph Chaney, and you'll be seeing his "mug" all over in the near future, because his new album is pretty dang special. It's full of memorable melodies, indelible hooks, witty, intelligent lyrics, and playful production. Mug continues Dolph's evolution from '90s lo-fi troubadour to widescreen guitar pop auteur. Get it now at https://bigstirrecords.com/dolph-chaney. We go in depth with Dolph on his wonderful new album, critical cats, recording career, songwriting process, alliance with Big Stir and producer Nick Bertling, 2016 Jeopardy! appearance, and Mug merchandising (from mugs to...thongs??). Leaning Toward Wisdom
Are Your Muses Too Unreliable?

Leaning Toward Wisdom

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 8, 2022 39:44

“Inspiration is the windfall from hard work and focus. Muses are too unreliable to keep on the payroll.” ― Helen Hanson A muse is a person or personified force who is the source of inspiration for a creative artist. I'd modify that definition slightly by saying a muse is any source of inspiration for creativity. Do you have a muse? Have you ever? Through the years of Leaning Toward Wisdom, I've talked about two that have occupied The Yellow Studio from the beginning - for over 22 years. Books. A guitar. Back in July, I started The Great Purge. Around 1,500 books exited The Yellow Studio, donated to the local library where I suspect the majority were sold in an annual sale to raise money for said library. The few I decided to keep - well under 100 titles - were boxed up and safely stored away for the next chapter of The Yellow Studio. By mid-August, whatever muse the books served was gone. Or was it? The books were gone, but any muse - source of inspiration - was far from gone. Sleep and the books were gone, but the inspiration was running wide open. I began to get on an unprecedented recording roll prompted by hours of writing. Feelings, phrases, words, quotes, lyrics, and photographs prompted the chasing of many ideas. I'm not saying any of them are good. You're clicking PLAY so you can decide that. I only know that I had more episode ideas brewing than ever. Usually, I'm working on 4-6 show ideas, half of which never see daylight. About half of them languish and never get fully developed. Suddenly, in the span of about a month I looked and realized I had about twenty drafts going - show ideas that had a title and at least a couple of paragraphs of notes. I began to look at the totality of them to figure out the ones I most wanted to push across the finish line. One idea begets another. It's always worked that way for me. There was no attempt to keep that habit in play though since I already had so many episode ideas to pursue. But it happened anyway. I'd sit here inside The Yellow Studio, headphones on listening to the BoDeans, or Dawes, or The Heavy Heavy, and start noodling on one idea - one draft. And a phrase or lyric would hit me, prompting me to open a new draft where I'd create a title. Just a title. Maybe one sentence to make note of what I was thinking of at the time. Then I'd go back to my original work. "Great! Now instead of finishing one idea, I've created yet another one," I'd think. Never mind. I'd trudge forward trying to finish at least one episode. I leaned into the process. Until I got COVID. My first foray with the virus. I'll forever blame my contracting it on my poor sleep habits, provoked mainly by all the changes I was planning. Changes I desired and changes I was looking forward to - but changes that were putting my mind on a higher octane than it had experienced in some time. My mind wasn't racing so much as it was doing cartwheels. I'm usually a bit more settled than that. But as we both know, we've never been HERE before. We've never been this age, in this place, in these circumstances, trying to do whatever it is we're trying to do. We're all in unchartered water as we enter a new day. Or night. I thought about the muse and my references to my two most-mentioned muses. The biggest muse - the one that required the most space and was the most obvious - was gone. I was no longer surrounded by all the book spines that had surrounded me for years. And I was happy about it. I never experienced the sadness or difficulty that I predicted. Before The Great Purge, I had dreaded it, fearing I'd struggle to decide which books to keep and which would go. However, on the first day of sorting, I found myself fully engaged to see how few I could keep and how many I could part with. I piled the books in the hallway just outside The Yellow Studio. At one end of the hall were the keepers. At the other end were the goers. It quickly became a game to see how small I could make...

Marc Malnati, owner of Lou Malnati's Pizzerias, graduated from Indiana University in 1977, eight months before his father and founder, Lou, died of cancer.  Under Marc's leadership, Malnati's experienced tremendous growth, going from two pizzerias to over 60 throughout the Chicagoland area, along with outposts in Arizona, Indiana and Wisconsin.    Marc believes strongly that culture is the most critical part of a business and has built a relational business model which calls for investing time in the pursuit of personal and professional growth.  As a result, management turnover at Malnati's is only 7% in an industry where the norm is 30%.  In addition, 2020 was the 11th year in a row that Lou Malnati's was named one of the top workplaces by The Chicago Tribune and was named a National Top Workplace as well.    Marc received Chicagoan of the Year award from Chicago Magazine in 1996 for his involvement in the opening of a Lou Malnati's Pizzeria in Chicago's under-resourced Lawndale neighborhood.   He has appeared on many television programs, including The Talk, The Drew Barrymore Show, Steve Harvey, Food Network and defeating Bobby Flay in 2009 on his hit TV show “Throwdown with Bobby Flay” and the “Daily Show with Jon Stewart” for his attention grabbing challenge to Stewart, who criticized Chicago-style deep dish pizza.   Marc and Jeanne, his wife of 40 years, live in Chicago and have three adult children and four grandchildren. In this episode, I sit down with Tessa Torrence Neumann, stepdaughter of Kurt Neumann, lead singer for the band BoDeans to discuss her suffering sexual abuse starting at the age of 9 and lasting for 6 years. Her perpetrator was her parents best friend, business partner, and bandmate who at the time was 40 years old. The negativity surrounding this abuse for Tessa carried over to other areas of her life where she became addicted to heroin at the age of 12.In this talk we not only learn about her experience with the grooming process, but discuss how other people connected to the victim are groomed as well.In addition, Tessa explains to us the misconception that abuse only happens in places with addiction, poverty, and low income families present. For her, she grew up living a normal life where her mother protected her and they lived in a neighborhood where you would never suspect anything like this was going on.To wrap up the interview, we gain perspective into Tessa's strength in speaking up about these issues and the threats and intimidation that came from that decision. But, we then are able to see how her strength paid off to bring her to where she is now. And that is having a happy family with a great husband and two kids, where she is devoted to them, her music, and the Strong Podcast which allows others to speak up about the injustices surrounding these issues.
