To hardcore fans of Yes, 1983's 90125 was a big departure from their progressive rock sound of the 1970s. But for the MTV generation, it was our first introduction to Yes and the immense talent within the band. Driven by new member Trevor Rabin as the guitarist, sometime lead vocalist & dominant songwriter and former lead singer Trevor Horn as producer, Yes went in a more commercial and pop direction. Anchored by the return of singer Jon Anderson, stalwart Chris Squire on bass, long time drummer Alan White and returning member Tony Kaye on keyboards, they sold more than 3 million copies in the US and were all over MTV thanks to Owner of a Lonely Heart. But what did the progressive rock Yes fans think about 90125? Was it too far a departure from their prog rock roots? Was the guitar too heavy compared to the picking of Steve Howe? UK fans didn't embrace this album like the US fans did and now Yes, led by Steve Howe who was in supergroup Asia during the recording of 90125, don't play songs from this record. Owner of a Lonely Heart hit #1 in the US but ony #28 in the UK and the rest of the videos were seen more in the US than England. We go track by track, review all the videos and talk about the politics and lineup changes that are very much a part of the legacy of Yes as 90125 turns 40 November 11, 2023. This is the first of three episodes in a mini-series looking at questions around the theme of change. The ideas I explore have come from our Haven Theme Kota at the start of September. In this episode of The Gentle Rebel Podcast, we explore the signs and signals that tell us something has changed or something is ready to change. You can download our digital cue cards that will help you navigate a season of change. If the idea of a calm and connected 60-minute call with me sounds helpful, we can focus on an area of life you're looking to integrate or instigate change in a Pick The Lock session. Learn more here. How Do You Know When Change is Knocking At The Door? It doesn't always occur to us that something has, needs to, or could change in our lives. Because of our adaptive skills, we might drift in undesirable directions and accept incremental shifts away from the path we would otherwise choose. Or, in the face of shifting circumstances, it might not occur to us that the habits, behaviours, and choices that were appropriate for the past are no longer serving us. What tells you something HAS changed? When you take time to observe and reflect, what signals tell you something has changed? Changes happen internally, externally, culturally and in our interpersonal relationships. Recognising the signs can give us a better understanding of what our feelings, thoughts, and actions are telling us about the needs beneath them. When we notice our default patterns, we more quickly interpret and understand what they say. Because so often, we find ourselves in that limbo season, feeling overwhelmed, confused, and disconnected. Not realising that it's because we've not noticed something HAS changed or needs to change. The meaning has shifted It feels different The connection is lost I'm doing the same thing but getting different results It has become easy (I have grown/developed the skills) It has become hard (I am no longer able to do what I could before) It has become diluted (what used to seem special is everywhere) What indicates to you that it's time for something to change? When you listen to and observe your mind, body, and spirit, how do they indicate it's time for a change? In the episode I expand on the following: I'm procrastinating I experience a pressing feeling in my head, body, and throat I feel something stirring inside me I keep noticing signs that resonate and reinforce my intuition I wake up in the night worrying I am increasingly restless and bored with my current situation I feel annoyed, grumpy, passive-aggressive, and negative I am lethargic and struggling for motivation I am jumping from one thing to the next without being able to settle I write the same thing in my journal every day I keep making the same mistake without learning from it I feel like I'm just going through the motions I feel disconnected from, disinterested in, and afraid of a future where things continue along this current path I am treading water in limbo - waiting for something to happen I sense a small, calm voice within telling me to do something uncomfortable or scary Pause and Listen Try not to act until you know which state the voice of change is speaking through. Gut instinct and intuition can come from different sources. Ask yourself: Am I currently in a defensive (urgency/panic) or connected (creative/flexible) state? Notice how you finish the sentences, "the world is…and I am…" (in a defensive state you will see words that indicate a sense of threat and scarcity e.g. the world is hostile and I am lost or the world is demanding and I am getting left behind). This is helpful idea from Deb Dana's book, Anchored. Find a cue (e.g. a favourite song, memory, or image) that helps you move into connection and safety in relation to your capacity to navigate change within your spirit of possibility, curiosity, and creativity. Now,
“Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.”Matthew 6:9-13 This is the last day of the Psalm 119 podcasts!!! Thank you for the journey ladies. "I may be wrong but I think nothing needs so much effort as prayer to God. If anyone wants to pray, the demons try to interrupt the prayer, for they know that prayer is the only thing that hinders them. A recent Photoyoga exercise sparked a fascinating Haven discussion about taking up space in the world and how uncomfortable some of us find it at times. If you ever feel bad about "being a burden", "holding people back", or "drawing too much attention", this episode of The Gentle Rebel Podcast is for you. In our June Open Kota session, Tuula encouraged us to capture our inner critic with a name and photograph and to think about the story it tells us and the words it uses. I discovered one of mine is called Rod and has a distinctive moustache. He pops into my head and tells me to play small, keep the noise down, and avoid attracting attention. You can see him in this video if you're interested... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aMa0gE_XKIk& The Moustache Experiment In this episode, I talk about an unanticipated experiment following the exercise. In an act of gentle rebellion, I refused to cede to Rod's demand and shave his (my) moustache off. Instead, I made it more pronounced and allowed it to take up space on my face until I was no longer self-conscious about it. High Sensitivity and Taking Up Space We explored several reasons why introverted and sensitive people might find it challenging to take up space in the world. I share some of these in the episode and consider the influence of society and culture on how we feel about this. Taking Up Space in Conversations We considered how, for sensitive people, the fear of being too intense or too much for other people can lead us to stay quiet when, inside, we're bursting with stuff to talk about. Maybe you're met with a blank look, or you've been told "not to be weird" or "don't worry about that stuff" when sharing things you can get lost chatting about. How do you find people to take up this kind of space with? Asking For Help We are less likely to ask for help when we fear being a burden. But as we discussed, asking for help doesn't always feel that way for the other person. Sometimes, it's in everyone's interest and longing for us to take up space and ask for help. When we are reluctant to ask for help, we might unnecessarily deprive ourselves of information and connection and deny the potential helper from doing something they would love to be part of. Physical Space and Belonging At the end of the episode, I share a recent story of an encounter with an angry guy in a field. It didn't feel great, but it sparked another impromptu inner experiment that I was glad to have the opportunity to try. Not least because I could put theories from Deb Dana's Anchored to the test. I had been reading it that morning, so it was fresh in my mind and helped enormously. Does Any Of This Sound Familiar? Did anything in this episode resonate with you? Are there particular aspects of taking up space that you feel bad about? Come and take up space by dropping a message or leaving a comment below. I would love to hear from you. Seriously! Join Us in The Haven If you would like to be part of our lovely Haven hive and explore these topics alongside some kindred spirits, I would love to invite you to join us in The Haven. It's free for the first seven days so that you can get a feel for it without risk.
