As food heats up in warmer temperatures, bacteria multiply rapidly. Kansas State University food scientist Karen Blakeslee says keeping food at proper temperatures – indoors and out – is critical in preventing the growth of foodborne bacteria. She discusses keeping food out of the “Danger Zone” and offers tips for reducing the risk of foodborne illness by following four simple steps: clean, separate, cook and chill. Transitioning from winter's cozy layers to spring's sunny miles demands more than just switching your wardrobe—it requires understanding how your body adapts to rising temperatures. This comprehensive guide unpacks the science of heat acclimation, revealing how your body undergoes physiological changes that take 7-14 days to complete, from increasing plasma volume to developing more efficient sweating patterns. For runners facing the classic spring dilemma—training through cold months only to race on unexpectedly hot days—we provide actionable strategies that could save your race. Rather than blindly pushing through heat, learn to pivot with grace: run by effort instead of pace, create tiered race goals, strategically use water stations for both hydration and cooling, and recognize the warning signs of heat-related illness before they become dangerous. The spotlight then shifts to an insider's view of Run Disney's Springtime Surprise weekend through a delightful conversation with Ashley, a Run Disney veteran who completed a "perfect season" of Disney races, and her partner Cole, who's lacing up for his first-ever Disney race experience. Their dynamic reveals both the infectious enthusiasm of experienced runners and the nervous excitement of first-timers stepping up to a 10-miler.Through personal stories, practical advice, and a healthy dose of pixie dust, this episode illuminates how running becomes magical when shared with those we love—whether that's tackling Disney parks together or supporting each other's fitness journeys. By the final mile marker, you'll be equipped with strategies to make your spring running both safer and more joyful.Want to make Spring running your best season yet? What if you could transform your training routine by simply training smarter, not harder? Coach Patrick from Endurance Nation, with over two decades of experience, guides us through the start of the training season with a strategic approach that promises to elevate your fitness journey. As the weather warms up, many athletes are eager to hit the ground running, but Coach Patrick advises against jumping into intense workouts too quickly. Instead, he emphasizes the importance of pacing yourself to avoid burnout and injury. The key is to focus on your "speed to excellence" and to equip yourself with the right knowledge for a successful training season. In our latest episode, Coach Patrick also sheds light on the often-overlooked aspects of training, especially nutrition and strategic planning. For those returning to their routines after a break, understanding and adapting your nutritional needs is crucial. With a well-laid 16-week plan, he details how to ease back into training effectively, assessing both your fitness level and equipment. Plus, the motivational impact of participating in local races or group activities is explored as a strategic way to boost your commitment and enthusiasm. Join us to learn how to navigate your path with intention and achieve not just your goals, but surpass them.

Retired National Weather Service meteorologist Hugh Johnson brings us a reflection on the winter of 2024-25, and his weekly forecast. He notes that this winter was the first one since 1913-14 that the average temperature was below normal each month, and that the Capital Region recently had winds of up to 60 mph, another record-breaker. For the forecast, while temps may reach 40's on Wednesday and 50's on Friday, he says to not put away the snow shovels just yet. Preview for next week: he'll discuss the impact of budget cuts expected for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Produced by Brea Barthel for Hudson Mohawk Magazine.
