The Champions League final highlighted a growing issue in sports media: more fans are becoming unwilling to pay for content. Despite record-breaking media rights deals, the shift from free-to-air to paywalled access appears to be reducing reach and reshaping audience behaviour. As subscription fatigue and fragmentation increase, questions are emerging around whether the current sports broadcasting model is sustainable. The discussion explores whether the industry needs to rethink pricing, distribution, and how it defines and monetizes its true audience. Key Points:Did moving the Champions League final behind a paywall push fans away? Are paywalls prioritizing short-term revenue at the expense of of long-term audience growth and reach? Is piracy a symptom of pricing and accessibility issues rather than a problem that can be solved through enforcement? If piracy is growing, what does that mean for the actual value of sports media rights? How should sports rethink distribution - free-to-air, subscriptions, or new hybrid models - to better match modern fan behaviour?
Cutting the cord on your print edition is the scariest operational decision you can make as a publisher. Even when the writing is on the wall, and skyrocketing paper, ink, and fulfillment costs are eating your margins alive, the fear of losing legacy subscribers and fleeing advertisers keeps many publishers completely paralyzed. In this episode, Pete sits down with Wally, partner at digital agency 50 Fish, to walk through a real-world case study of a 30-year-old legacy enthusiast publication, Brew Your Own Magazine, that pulled the plug on print and successfully migrated to a 100% digital-only model using Leaky Paywall. They dissect the exact multi-month blueprint used to transition legacy print readers, how they protected their ad revenue by leveraging trackable digital flipbooks, why they had to tear down their old magazine department navigation for a topical SEO architecture, and a brilliant operational hack using Leaky Paywall's Lead-In extension to explode their free registration list.If print overhead is a ticking clock for your business, this episode is your tactical guide to life after paper. What You'll Learn in This EpisodeThe Reality of the Churn: You'll find out what actually happens to your paid subscriber base when you stop printing, how to handle long-term fulfillment liabilities, and why a well-timed, transparent communication plan beats a rushed transition every time. The Print Replica Ad Trap Solved: BYO retained its legacy print advertisers by offering a digital flipbook with clickable, trackable URLs. This satisfied the 20% of readers who still want a magazine layout while giving advertisers modern data analytics.Stop Replicating Print Layouts on the Web: Organizing your website navigation by magazine departments kills your user engagement. Restructuring content into topical buckets drives massive SEO and longer session times. The Lead-In Growth Hack: You will learn the exact strategy 50 Fish uses to identify high-traffic organic search magnets. They hook readers with the first few paragraphs using Leaky Paywall's Lead-In block, then trigger a free registration wall right at a high-suspense subheading. Why Email is Your Real Product: Traditional metered paywalls fail to capture one-and-done organic traffic. Utilizing Leaky Paywall's List Builder to enforce free registrations builds a controlled, algorithmic-proof audience asset.Resources & Links MentionedLearn more about Wally and his team: 50 Fish Digital Agency or email him directly at wally@50fish.comSee the digital transitions in action: Brew Your Own Magazine and WineMaker MagazineDeepen your paywall strategy: Leaky Paywall Tools used in this case study: Leaky Paywall Lead-In Extension and Leaky Paywall List Builder
What happens after a reader signs up for your free registration tier? If you aren't actively nurturing them during the honeymoon period of peak engagement, you are leaving predictable reader revenue on the table. In this episode of the Paywall Podcast, Pete and Tyler break down the anatomy of high-converting email drip campaigns. They contrast two radically different, successful publisher case studies. One niche enthusiast publication dominates with just one perfectly timed email. Another educational publisher leverages an intensive 18-email sequence to drive continuous paid conversions.Whether you cover hyper-local news or serve a deep-niche enthusiast market, you will learn how to stop nagging readers for money. You will discover how to build real trust, leverage your unique voice, and match your email cadence to user intent.Key TakeawaysThe Transactional Goldmine: Your initial account confirmation email boasts an average 70% open rate. If you don't have a subtle, text-based subscription CTA at the bottom, you are missing your most visible touchpoint. The 60-Minute Honeymoon Window: Giving readers an hour to digest your content pays off. One publisher sends a beautiful, high-value welcome email exactly 60 minutes after registration, and it is their highest-converting inbound marketing asset. The Content Bundle Hack: Packaging your best evergreen articles into a free Essentials resource bundle can instantly spike your free registrations. One niche publisher saw a 30% jump using this exact tactic.Local News Playbook: Local publishers should skip aggressive discounts. Instead, focus on introducing your team, highlighting investigative wins, and leaning into your highest-traffic content categories like local food, crime, or politics. The Two Superpowers: You already have the content and the traffic. You just need the confidence to protect your value with a strategic registration wall and a purposeful email sequence.Links & Resources MentionedLeaky PaywallNewsletter GlueCase Studies Referenced: Small Boats Magazine and The Moss ReportTool Highlight: Leaky Paywall Timewall Extension (automatically shifts free content behind the paywall after a set amount of time to create natural urgency)

Kerry's match against Donegal in the first round of the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship in Killarney, is set to be shown on GAA+ on Saturday May 23rd. Treasa spoke to the Irish Examiner GAA Correspondent John Fogarty, who broke the story.
GAA fans are upset at the confirmation that the All-Ireland football Championship opening round fixture between the sides will be streamed live on GAA+.With a significant amount of games being shown on GAA+ again this summer, what will it mean for fans who don't have a subscription and rely on RTE tv to view the games?Joining Shane to discuss is Daniel Hussey, Sports Presenter and Jamesie O'Connor, former All Ireland winner with Clare.
Most publishers view their email list as a cost center, especially as providers like Mailchimp and HubSpot continue to hike their prices. When a list balloons, the knee-jerk reaction is often to "clean" it by deleting thousands of leads or slashing newsletter frequency to stay under a pricing tier. In this episode, we explain why this "cost-saving" measure is actually a direct hit to your bottom line. We dive into the data behind the Publisher Flywheel, the surge in growth from new list-building tools, and how to protect your database from bots without sacrificing future recurring revenue.Key Topics DiscussedThe "Panic-Delete" Trap: A look at why deleting "unengaged" subscribers can cost you more than you save. We break down the math of how a small monthly savings on email overhead can result in a $15,000 loss in annual subscription revenue. Why Less Frequency Means Fewer Subscriptions: We analyze data from a publisher who cut their newsletter from daily to weekly. The result? A clear drop-off in paid signups. We discuss why your newsletter is the primary "momentum" engine for your paywall. The 5x Growth Factor: An update on the results we're seeing with the new Leaky Paywall List Builder. We discuss why a full-screen takeover on the second article view is outperforming traditional pop-ups and what to do when your list starts growing faster than expected.Implementing a "Sunset Policy": Instead of hitting the delete button, learn how to use re-engagement segments. We discuss the strategy of moving unengaged readers to a "Do Not Send" list to lower your costs while preserving your most valuable marketing asset.Front-End Quality Control: A deep dive into three levels of list defense: Password requirements, silent email verification, and One-Time Passwords (OTP). Learn how to block bots and "junk" emails at the point of entry so your subscriber table stays 100% clean.Links & Resources Mentioned:Leaky PaywallList Builder Email Verification ServiceNewsletter Glue
Most traditional publishers view their email list as a secondary tool, a simple vehicle used to drive traffic back to their website. Dylan Redekop, founder of Growth Currency Media, argues that this mindset is exactly backwards. In this episode, we explore the "creator" approach to publishing, where the email itself is the primary product. We dive into how consistency, strategic growth tactics, and a shift in how we measure engagement can build a more resilient and profitable media business.Key Topics DiscussedThe 100 Issue Challenge Dylan discusses starting his newsletter as a pandemic side project and how committing to 100 consecutive weekly editions served as a "forcing function" to find his niche and build a full-time business. The Power of Co-Registration A look at how publishers can use automated post-subscribe recommendations to grow their lists and generate new revenue streams by partnering with "adjacent" newsletters.Growth Strategies for Niche and Local News Why local publishers should look beyond their direct competitors and partner with community businesses like bakeries or the YMCA to create a "rising tide" for the local ecosystem.Rethinking Your Metrics Why it is time to stop obsessing over inflated open rates and start measuring replies as the ultimate indicator of a truly engaged and loyal reader. The Modern "Letter to the Editor" How to use newsletter replies to gather feedback, conduct simple surveys, and curate high-value content directly from your audience to keep your publication relevant.About Our Guest Dylan Redekop is the founder of Growth Currency Media and the co-host of the Growth in Reverse podcast. A veteran of the newsletter industry, he has worked with major platforms like SparkLoop and helps publishers deep-dive into the strategies used by the world's most successful newsletters.Links & Resources Mentioned:Growth Currency: growthcurrency.netGrowth in Reverse Podcast: Growth in ReverseSpark Loop: sparkloop.appConnect with Dylan Redekop on LinkedIn

Talking Trek is back live with special guest Jason Vneck for a big community episode covering STFC's latest updates, the return of Vengeance Is Mine, Borg Sphere reactions, and the increasingly spicy conversation around Alliance Tournaments. The show starts with some classic live-show chaos as DJz and Griffin return from Idaho with stories, jokes, and one truly unhinged Ghost energy haul before settling into a fun and thoughtful conversation with Jason about content creation, Twitch growth, podcast milestones, and how communities form around Star Trek Fleet Command. From there, the episode dives into the game itself: Borg Sphere impressions, ship utility, artifacts, store issues, officer value, and how newer content is landing with players across different ops ranges. There is also some great Star Trek lore discussion mixed in, especially around the Borg, First Contact, and Voyager. The second half of the show is a deep dive into the future of Alliance Tournaments, including the announced sunset of alliance rerolls, the broader in-game economy, free-to-play strategy, tournament balance, Temporal Disruptors, and whether STFC is heading toward a full tournament refresh. If you enjoy long-form STFC discussion with community perspective, game analysis, and a little live-show gremlin energy, this is a great episode to catch. #StarTrekFleetCommand #STFC #TalkingTrek #StarTrek #BorgSphere #AllianceTournaments #JasonVneck 00:59 Live show kickoff and server sound-off 03:48 Jason Vneck joins the stage and the show setup begins 05:46 Idaho travel stories, Ghost energy loot, and airport suitcase chaos 12:26 Griffin and Jason discover a wild Fry's Electronics connection 14:16 Twitch Partner Plus talk and community support update 17:54 Talking Trek celebrates episode #600 hitting the podcast feed 24:30 Jason shares when he started playing STFC and his server history 25:58 Mid-ops discussion and ideas for helping newer players on older servers 30:23 First impressions of the Borg Sphere and mixed player reactions 33:23 Borg Cube utility, Sphere grind, and how players adapted to the new ship 40:02 Store navigation headaches and bounty pack talk 48:01 Borg fandom chat, First Contact callbacks, and Voyager changing the Borg 56:30 Alliance Tournaments announcement and the end of alliance rerolls 01:06:20 DJs breaks down the in-game economy and why tournament changes may be coming 01:13:41 Temporal Disruptors, material spending, and the debate over “broken” scoring 01:20:23 Could Alliance Tournaments become bigger, newer, and more rewarding? 01:36:54 Maverick tasks defended as some of the best recent content in STFC 02:05:10 What is actually breaking tournaments, and what players may not want to lose 02:22:38 Ops progression vs. lower-level support in tournament design 02:37:53 Paywall versus slow grind: defining the difference in modern STFC 02:49:20 Final thoughts from Jason Vneck and community sendoff 02:50:43 Bonus LEGO Enterprise stream plug and closing sign-off
Turns out the reports that Honda paywalled the garage door opener recently were incorrect - and were merely a misunderstanding of how one gets a remote garage door opener on a Honda these days (it's a dealer-installed option). https://www.lehtoslaw.com

This week, Adrian and Moira are both traveling -- Adrian is finishing work on the newly titled Project 1933: Fascism Then and Now (available for preorder now). So, back by popular (?) demand (?), it's another Richard Wagner-focused episode of In Bed with the Right. Wagner's final opera, 1882's Parsifal, draws on the grail legends, various philosophers, Wagner's own aging process, and whatever the 19th century version of Buddhism for Dummies was. Come for the male suffering, stay for the syphilis-metaphors, the Best Little Whorehouse in Grailland, and the final split in the bromance known as Nietzgner (probably? We're talking about Nietzsche and Wagner).
What happens when a 50-year-old brand built on whistleblowing and independent journalism has to master digital subscriptions? For Ben Moss, CEO of The Moss Report and Publisher of the Townsend Letter, the answer was trading a "leaky" paywall for a high-value "Essentials" strategy. In this episode of the Paywall Podcast powered by Leaky Paywall, Ben joins Pete to discuss how he modernized two legendary niche publications without losing the "Trust Moat" his father built over half a century. They dive deep into the mechanics of the digital transition, including:The "Essentials" Strategy: How Ben replaced a standard metered paywall with a curated "Starter Pack" of 20 high-value articles—and why it triggered a 30% spike in free registrations. The Power of the Automated Drip: A look at the 18-email onboarding sequence that nurtures new readers from "casual visitor" to "mission-driven subscriber."Consolidating the Tech Stack: Why Ben moved away from "Frankenstein" setups (like Mailchimp) to an integrated Flow Letter and Leaky Paywall dashboard to save time and reduce technical debt.Acquiring a Legacy: The reality of taking over the 40-year-old Townsend Letter, moving it from a declining print-and-ad model to a 100% digital, reader-supported platform. The "Patreon" Mindset: Why authenticity and a whistleblowing legacy are the ultimate competitive advantages in an AI-driven world where "information is cheap, but trust is expensive."If you are a niche publisher wondering how to turn a loyal "analog" audience into a thriving digital community, this episode is a blueprint for building a brand that readers don't just read, they fund.
What if the most expensive moment in your customer acquisition funnel is also your most ignored opportunity?Agility requires seeing a user's “no” not as a final endpoint, but as a data point that signals a need for a different path. It demands that we pivot in real-time to offer alternative forms of value, rather than simply writing off the investment and the relationship.Today, we're going to talk about one of the biggest blind spots in the subscription economy: the paywall. For most apps, this is a binary, all-or-nothing moment where up to 95% of hard-won users say "no" and are effectively treated as a lost cause. We'll explore why that moment of decline isn't the end of the customer journey, but potentially the most valuable opportunity to build a different kind of relationship and unlock new revenue. To help me discuss this topic, I'd like to welcome Michael Gants, Founder and CEO at Encore. About Michael Gants Michael Gants is the Founder and CEO of Encore, an iOS SDK that helps subscription apps monetize the 90–95% of users who decline the initial paywall.Michael studied economics at Harvard College, where he graduated as a John Harvard Scholar, and later earned his MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business. In this episode, we're diving into the "hellscape" (as we like to call it) of Google's AI Overviews and the rise of zero-click searches. While Google is celebrating record search revenue, publishers are seeing traffic drops of up to 38% as AI "sucks up" content and keeps readers from ever hitting your site.We break down a real-world case study of The Fisherman, a niche publisher that successfully pivoted by tightening their walls and leaning into their true superpowers: Content and Audience

Most AI photo apps try to do everything, and end up blending in.In this video, Steve P. Young breaks down how Photo Revive AI scaled to over $500K/month by doing the opposite: niching down first, then expanding later.Instead of launching as “another AI image generator,” this app positioned itself around photo restoration and revival and used smart ASO, onboarding, and paywall strategies to win in a brutally competitive market. You'll learn:✅ Why niching down beats competing in red-hot AI categories✅ How Photo Revive AI generates ~$500K/month (verified across multiple tools)✅ The exact onboarding and paywall flow driving conversions✅ How credit-based pricing controls AI costs and boosts revenue✅ Why distribution matters more than features or UISteve walks through:• Real revenue estimates from Sensor Tower, AppFigures, and AppMagic• The full user journey from install → upgrade• Paywall tactics most founders overlook• How to start a niche, win early traction, and expand laterIf you're building:
