I'm super pumped about this episode because you get to hear from an angler who ditched forward facing sonar, but still managed to rise to the top of competitive bass fishing. Dustin Smith placed second in Rookie of the Year and fifth in Angler of the Year on the Tackle Warehouse Invitational circuit in 2025 without ever staring at a screen shaking a jighead minnow. In fact, Dustin doesn't own a unit with live sonar. Hell, even his trolling motor ain't the latest and greatest. You see, Dustin's super power has nothing to do with technology, but everything to do with his unbridled passion for catching bass in shallow water. But there's SO MUCH MORE!Sit back, crack open a cold one, and relax. You're among friends. This isn't another fishing podcast. Anytime you're fishing it's all good! Has been my motto and tagline since day one. In fishing, you also need to be trying new ideas on and off the water. My courses and communities also subscribe to that mindset. So, I finally found a home for an idea that I had back in 2020 during Covid-19 when I launched The Good Karma Rigging Crew and the Good Karma Sportfishing App. During the years of when the App was in good use, we learned it was a lot to add various features. At the same time, more ready-made apps hit the market. The nature of innovatio. So I side-lined the idea I had to create a online fishing community with a credit based system. When we started Good Karma Sportfishing on Patreon in December of 2024. We had an open mind and took it one step at a time. Now, coming up close to a year, it's a great platform and it could house the idea. Welcome into the Good Karma Sportfishing and Educational Programs World: THE Leader's Edge. It's a FREE part of being in our Patreon Group and is open to recreational anglers no matter where you fish- location or boat/bridge/kayak/river/lake. Send us a textIn our Last Podcast Of Season 6 The team visits Iron Fish Distillery in Thompsonville, Michigan, where they explore the nine-year-old farm-based operation producing grain-to-glass whiskey with locally grown ingredients including their signature hazelnut rye.• Iron Fish grows over 80 acres of hazelnut rye, having recently harvested 100,000 pounds for their whiskey production• Started by sourcing MGP whiskey with unique barrel finishing while waiting for their own distillate to mature• Mad Angler series represents their premium line featuring 100% house-distilled whiskey aged six years• Brand draws inspiration from local author Michael Delp and the fishing culture of Northern Michigan• Tasting includes their 95% rye whiskey, four-grain bourbon, and experimental offerings like their Manifesto series• Distillery balances traditional methods with innovation, creating unique flavor profiles in their limited releases• Iron Fish's motto "returning spirit to its origin" parallels steelhead trout returning to the Betsy River with bringing whiskey back to its farm roots• Their small-batch blending program showcases the importance of finding the perfect proof point for each expressionFind Iron Fish Distillery's products on shelves throughout Michigan or visit their tasting room to experience their full lineup including exclusive releases.Down a dirt road in Thompsonville, Michigan, something special is happening at Iron Fish Distillery. This nine-year-old farm-based operation has emerged as a beacon of craft distilling excellence in the Great Lakes region, creating whiskeys that honor local agricultural traditions while pushing creative boundaries. The distillery's story mirrors the lifecycle of the steelhead trout that swim in the nearby Betsy River—the namesake "iron fish" that return to their birthplace after journeying through Lake Michigan. Similarly, Iron Fish represents a return of spirits to their agricultural origins, where grain and water transform into something greater than the sum of their parts.During our visit, we explored their impressive 80-acre operation where they've just harvested over 100,000 pounds of hazelnut rye destined for their whiskey. Their strategic approach to growth—sourcing quality MGP whiskey for creative barrel finishing while patiently waiting for their own distillate to mature—has positioned them for long-term success rather than rushing immature product to market. The Mad Angler series stands as their premium offering, featuring 100% house-distilled spirits aged six years. Drawing inspiration from local author Michael Delp, these bottles literally emboss the connection between fishing culture and whiskey appreciation. The 95% rye whiskey delivers balanced spearmint and chocolate notes without overwhelming dill characteristics, while their four-grain bourbon offers exceptional complexity at 94 proof. Most impressive is their experimental Manifesto series, which grants blender Isaac complete creative freedom to work with any barrel on the property, resulting in truly distinctive expressions. What makes Iron Fish exceptional isn't just the quality of their spirits but their holistic approach to the craft. From their barrel selection process—working with both local cooper Joe Smith and premium Napa Valley suppliers—to their careful consideration of proof points, every decision serves the spirit rather than Add for SOFL If You Have GohstsSupport the showhttps://www.scotchybourbonboys.com The Scotchy bourbon Boys are #3 in Feedspots Top 60 whiskey podcasts in the world https://podcast.feedspot.com/whiskey_podcasts/

Mike Ward [46:32], owner of Adipose Boat Works, recently tied Del Brown's lifetime permit count with 513 permit caught on a fly rod. On a bamboo fly rod! Now Mike would be the first one to say he may not be the world's best permit angler, but he has put in the time and energy to catch more than anyone else in history. And along the way he's learned some tips that we could all benefit from. I asked Mike to share his tips with us and he happily agreed. And, yes, Mike has also been skunked for days at a time when chasing permit so it happens to all of us. In the Fly Box this week, we introduce a new theme song and have some of the best questions of the year, including: I saw a couple cutthroats in a high lake spawning in August and none of the fish were rising, despite plenty of insects on the water. Would one spawning pair cause to whole lake to shut down like this? What are some tips for casts to use on small brushy streams? What are some tips for getting into saltwater fly fishing after a lifetime of trout fishing? What advice would you give to a young fly angler who wants to make a living in the fly-fishing world? Can you summarize when you might use a particular type of thread in fly tying? What can I do to prevent my fly line loop from cracking when I attach a leader directly to the loop with a clinch knot? Has your view of rod length for small streams changed over time? If I find a great pool on a small stream, how long should I rest it before going back? A week? A month? Next year? I have had some broken hooks from commercial fly patterns yet on my own flies they never do this. Are commercial flies tied on lesser quality hooks? And why do some hooks bend while others break? Do you recommend magnifiers for tying on small flies? My eye doctor says my close vision is fine but I still have problems. Should I replace my nylon tippet every year? Do fly shops make sure they rotate their tippet material so I don't buy older tippet?

This was a light hearted sample of something I am going to dive deeper on in the future. Enjoy the "gentlemens chat"!
On today's show, I try to build my dream 5-rod arsenal, with a pretty hefty budget of $3,000. So for 5 rods and 5 reels, that gives us a $299 average for each, which was a ton of fun! We also have a quick update on an Elite Series angler battling scary health situation, another one of the legends retires, and we tackle choosing the right kayak length. Our destination is the massive Upper Columbia River in southeastern British Columbia, with football-field-sized back eddies, hydraulics that'll flip drift boats, and rainbow trout that'll bend your rod like a bonefish. Joining me is veteran guide, Kelly Laatsch, general manager of St. Mary's Angler, Cranbrook, BC, who's spent three decades mastering these waters. Today, Kelly opens his playbook, sharing secrets on fly fishing extreme hydraulics, why a single-fly rigs is a good strategy, and pointers on guiding men vs women. We'll also touch on BC's legendary Elk, St. Mary, and Skookumchuck rivers, plus Argentina's trout paradise. Stick around for a wild story of 400-pound sturgeon—and an unforgettable first date. However, Kyle's season just came to a screeching halt all because of a tick bite that enlarged his heart, ended his season and left him happy that he is not dead.
