States with the worst pension fund shortfalls include Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Kentucky, and New Jersey which have less than half of the assets needed to pay promised benefits and another 17 states have less than two-thirds. The extent to which public pensions are underfunded has been obscured by governmental accounting rules, which allow pensions to eliminate their underfunding, no matter how large, simply by investing in risky assets. In fact, investing in riskier assets may allow a pension to raise investment assumptions, but it also increases the probability that existing underfunding will increase. It’s anyone’s guess what will happen if and when a state pension in the United States runs out of money, but it’s indisputable that the amount of money that will be needed to bail out a single failed U.S. state pension will be in the tens of billions. All public pension stakeholders—American taxpayers and pensioners—need to get educated fast as to the causes of coming pension collapses and learn what they can do about it now. Listen as hosts Robert and Kim Kiyosaki and their guests Ted Siedle and Chris Tobe discuss how what’s happening in Kentucky can happen anywhere in the United States. Learn more about your ad choices. This week we welcomed Chris Tobe, candidate for Auditor, to the show. He's a financial veteran who has been active on the pension issue longer than anyone. He talked to us about why he wants to be the Auditor and what his priorities for the pension and other major issues would be if he were to win the election. Before that, Jazmin and Robert talked about the new Democratic Women's Caucus, the movement of the solar net metering bill and abortion bills through the legislature, Jazmin does a "Good Bill/Bad Bill", and Robert has some Quick Hits.
Auditor Mike Harmon talked about transparency in the Auditor’s Office. He also discussed his re-election campaign, claims made in a previous interview by one of his opponents Chris Tobe, the KFC YUM! Center, Kentucky Wired, and more. Listen to his call here…
Chris Tobe, CFA talked about his run to replace Mike Harmon as Auditor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky and his goals if elected. He discussed lack of transparency in pension funds, the long process to fix the pension deficit, and his book “Kentucky Fried Pensions”. Listen to Chris’ call here…
Chris Tobe's journey as the author of "Kentucky Fried Pensions" is the first public SEC whistleblower which attempted to use the new Dodd-Frank law to clean up the culture of cover-up and corruption in Kentucky Pensions. It explores the national links between corruption in investments via placement agents and corruption in underfunding that plague states like Illinois and Kentucky. Kentucky Fried Pensions explores the Kentucky Employee Retirement System (KERS) for State Workers as the worst funded state plan in the country (worse than any single IL plan) and how others can learn from its current death spiral. The book looks into the lack of transparency as evidenced by no disclosure of holdings in SAC Capital buried in a Blackstone fund for nearly a year after the scandal broke. It connects a placement agent network to New Mexico, California (CALPERS) Illinois, New York, Connecticut and Rhode Island. The book has received glowing reviews in Forbes and Public Sector Inc. and has made the non-fiction bestseller list in Kentucky This new and expanded 2nd Edition provides updated coverage of Kentucky's ongoing pension funding crises and provides comparison with those of Detroit and Rhode Island. Be sure to watch the PBS Special "The Pension Gamble" which aired in October 2018, where Tobe and other experts reveal the massive eventual meltdown in public pensions in places like Kentucky, Illinois, New Jersey, Conneticut and more.
