And we talk about what this all means for the 2026 midterms! And...our guest today in our seemingly never-ending quest to interview every viable democratic candidate for a major race in Colorado, friend of the pod Jeff Bridges joins us once more to explain his campaign for State Treasurer and his love for "T-pools."That's it for this episode! Raleigh Mayor Janet Cowell's political career has taken her from Raleigh City Council, to the North Carolina Senate, to serving as State Treasurer, and now back to leading the Capital City. Janet reflects on her time in the Senate — including her decision to hold out on the state lottery vote as one of the “Lottery Five,” a group of Democrats who initially opposed the measure — and how that experience shaped her independence and leadership style. She also discusses her vision for Raleigh's future, from sustainable growth and smart financial management to the ambitious effort to attract a Major League Baseball team to the City of Oaks. Plus, Skye and Brian break down an extraordinary week in #ncpol: a sharp Senate press release aimed at House leadership, a school system facing scrutiny, the latest congressional maps lawsuit, how the federal government shutdown is affecting the state, and the political community mourning two recent deaths in North Carolina politics. John Mikos joins Nick in Studio 809 to talk about his campaign for Colorado State Treasurer. What is a state treasurer? Well, they watch over the money the state collects before it goes out to whatever the state needs to pay for. And that's a complicated thing because there's billions of dollars in there and the state definitely wants to take the best advantage those moneys as they arrive and before they depart. John can definitely explain it a lot better than I can.Oh, and there's a point where an excited John starts shifting to the right of the view port and Producer Dave has to have him shift back, which I've kept in here for funsies.Follow BNLO on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok!0:00 Splash/Sponsor/Intro0:31 Greetings and Monologue4:27 Ad Break3:12 Introducing John Mikos/Is Colorado a Rectangle?5:27 John is Running for Colorado State Treasurer!7:05 What the Heck does a State Treasurer do?11:39 So Where is Our Money at?13:13 Impactful Investment20:13 The Treasury is Not a Scrooge McDuck Vault21:13 Investing in the Community24:29 Building the Public Bank(s)30:52 Starting Small 35:18 John's Experience and Vision42:50 Getting the Regional Buy-In51:31 Road Tripping for Treasury58:05 It's Time to Talk About TABOR Again1:04:57 Interview Closeout1:06:43 Soapbox - The Charlie Kirk proclamation1:24:01 Credits

I'm willing to bet that most Oregonians don't know who our State Treasurer is, much less what the State Treasury does. But we should. The office of State Treasurer, currently Elizabeth Steiner by the way, is a powerful position, and invests a huge amount of public money. How that money is invested matters, and it really matters that our public dollars and pension funds are deeply invested in the fossil fuel industry. The statewide coalition Divest Oregon has been calling out the treasury's dirty investments for several years now, and they've also put out policy proposals, research, and legislation to shift our investments to help foster a clean energy economy.I'm delighted to talk with two of their members today about the work they do, how it affects all Oregonians, and how to help.As always, Coast Range Radio is free on all podcast apps, which is a great way to share this episode. Hosts: Taylor Morgan and Erin Rider One legislative bill we never dug into on Inside Sources dealt with gold and silver. House Bill 306 -- sponsored by Rep. It instructs the State Treasurer's office to do several things relating to this change, so we wanted to dig into that more. Utah State Treasurer Marlo Oaks joins Inside Sources to share his thoughts.
Hosts: Taylor Morgan and Erin Rider Drama between DOJ, President Trump, and federal judge continues The drama continues this afternoon between the Department of Justice and President Trump, and a U.S. District judge requesting information about deportation flights. You'll recall that the president called for that judge's impeachment, but the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court refuses to even go down that path. Today, the Justice Department chastised the judge’s demand for more information. We begin Inside Sources with a discussion on the latest developments. National Democrats holding town halls in Republican districts Recent Congressional Republican town halls have been quite lively and loud, with protestors and angry constituents voicing frustrations over several things President Trump and Congress are doing. It's prompted urging from Congressional GOP leaders to stop holding town halls for a while. Now, Democrats see this as an opportunity to swoop in and make headway in these conservative districts. Explicit bans on segregated facilities removed from federal contracts More effects of President Trump's push to eliminate diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts within the federal government today. Now, contractors who work with the government are no longer explicitly prohibited from having segregated restaurants, waiting rooms, and drinking fountains. Is this a big deal or a complete nonissue? The Inside Sources hosts break it down. Washington D.C. facing budget issues due to Congress With all the talk of the federal budget the past few weeks, there's one piece missing... and you may not have even noticed it: Washington D.C. They actually need Congress to approve their budget, and the GOP spending bill that passed last week will require the city to cut $1 Billion of the budget... in the middle of the fiscal year. Erin Rider and Taylor Morgan discuss the uniqueness of D.C.’s relationship with the rest of the country. Pres. Trump, Pres. Zelenskyy hold talks following explosive conversation last month Following the explosive meeting between President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in February, there was a lot of hesitation and worry about the future of a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia. But following today's call between the two -- as well as yesterday's conversation between Trump and Russian President Putin -- things are looking a bit better. The Inside Sources hosts describe how they’re feeling better about the situation. On the Hill 2025: Legislation on the Great Salt Lake – what passed and what failed? A pink-colored payphone is popping up around Salt Lake City, allowing people to hear memories of the Great Salt Lake and share their own stories and memories too. The "Great Salt Lake Hopeline" is a public art project designed to bring additional awareness to preservation efforts for the lake. Awareness is great, but what about action? Inside Sources discusses some of the recent legislation regarding the Great Salt Lake. On the Hill 2025: State may pay vendors in silver and gold One legislative bill we never dug into on Inside Sources dealt with gold and silver. House Bill 306 -- sponsored by Rep. Ken Ivory -- would allow the state of Utah to pay vendors in actual gold or silver. It instructs the State Treasurer's office to do several things relating to this change, so we wanted to dig into that more. Utah State Treasurer Marlo Oaks joins Inside Sources to share his thoughts. Additional files released relating to JFK’s assassination Did Lee Harvey Oswald actually shoot and kill President John F. Kennedy? Was the CIA involved? Was it the Soviets? Or was it really aliens? Conspiracies surrounding the former president's death have percolated for more than 60 years. Now, the government is releasing thousands of documents about the assassination – documents which have never been seen by the American public.

What does it take to lead with purpose and create meaningful impact in your community? Is it resilience, creativity, or perhaps the ability to connect with others in unexpected ways?In the latest episode of Outside Insights, I sat down with Colleen Davis, Delaware's State Treasurer, to uncover her journey from a small-town childhood to managing billions in state investments. Colleen's path is anything but conventional—spanning neurosurgery, finance, and public service—and it's packed with lessons on leadership, resilience, and the power of building connections.I encourage you to listen to the podcast during your next workout, commute, or downtime to explore these key takeaways:1. The Power of ResilienceGrowing up as one of eight children in a family that faced financial hardship, Colleen learned early on how to rebuild from the ground up. Those experiences instilled a boldness and adaptability that have shaped her approach to life and leadership."You can lose everything materially and still rebuild—you just need the right people and mindset around you." Her story is a reminder that setbacks don't define you—your response to them does.2. Leadership Rooted in ConnectionAs State Treasurer, Colleen oversees $11.2 billion in investments and serves on 33 boards, all while championing innovative programs like Delaware Earns, a retirement savings plan for workers without employer-sponsored options. But what sets her apart is her ability to connect people and solve problems through relationships. "Sometimes, the most impactful solutions come from simply knowing who to call and bringing the right people together."Her approach highlights how collaboration and creativity can lead to impactful outcomes.3. Breaking Barriers to Build BridgesIn high school, Colleen took on a leadership role early, petitioning to create her school's first girls' soccer team—a move that not only changed her trajectory but also inspired others."You can do anything boys can do, but sometimes, you just have to do it wearing a shirt." This spirit of determination and advocacy remains a central theme in her career.4. The Importance of Financial InnovationColleen shared insights into her role as a steward of public funds and her efforts to create long-term financial security for Delaware residents. Her team's work on Delaware Earns exemplifies innovation in public service—offering small businesses a free, easy-to-implement retirement savings option for employees."It's about making sure everyone has the tools they need to prepare for the future, no matter where they start." 5. Lessons in Vulnerability and GrowthFrom navigating personal challenges to running for public office, Colleen's story underscores the value of embracing vulnerability and learning from every experience."No experience is wasted, even if it ends in failure—there's always a lesson to take forward." Her career path reminds us that success isn't always linear, but persistence and adaptability make all the difference.
