In a recent episode of The Valley Today, host Janet Michael welcomes Elise Stine Dolinar, the driving force behind Bright Futures Frederick/Winchester. Their conversation, happening against the backdrop of the annual "Camping for Hunger" week, delves into the heart of a community initiative that goes far beyond simply filling backpacks with food. Bright Futures, as Elise passionately explains, is dedicated to ensuring that every student—regardless of circumstance—has access to the essentials they need to succeed in school and in life. The Weekend Food Pack Program: Logistics and Love At the core of Bright Futures' efforts is the weekend food pack program. Each week, volunteers assemble over a thousand bags of shelf-stable, allergy-conscious food items. These bags are discreetly placed in students' backpacks, ensuring that children who might otherwise go hungry have enough to eat until school resumes. Elise describes the logistical ballet required to coordinate donations, manage inventory, and accommodate special dietary needs. The program's success hinges on the generosity of local donors and the tireless work of school staff and volunteers. Beyond Hunger: Clothing, Hygiene, and Dignity However, Bright Futures' mission doesn't stop at food. Elise and her team respond to a wide range of student needs, from winter coats and shoes to hygiene products and even sleeping bags for homeless youth. The organization works closely with school counselors, who act as the eyes and ears on the ground, identifying students in need and maintaining their privacy. This system ensures that help is delivered quickly and discreetly, preserving the dignity of every child. Community Collaboration: Volunteers and Donors Step Up Transitioning from logistics to community impact, Janet and Elise highlight the crucial role of volunteers and donors. Whether it's a church group packing food bags, individuals donating new coats or clearing out store shelves during sales, the community's involvement is the lifeblood of Bright Futures. Elise shares stories of last-minute shopping trips for shoes and the creative ways the team stretches every dollar, often leveraging partnerships with organizations like the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank to maximize the impact of cash donations. Facing Challenges: Holidays, Snow Days, and the Unexpected The conversation also addresses the unique challenges posed by school breaks and unexpected closures. Elise explains how Bright Futures prepares special food boxes for holidays and adapts quickly when snow days disrupt their carefully planned schedules. Flexibility and foresight are essential, as is the unwavering commitment to never turn away a child in need. Empowering Students and Staff As the conversation wraps up, Elise emphasizes the importance of empowering both students and school staff. In-school food pantries allow older students to access food independently, while donations help relieve the financial burden on teachers and counselors who often dip into their own pockets to help students. The organization's work, Elise notes, is only possible thanks to the "angels in the schools" and the broader community that believes in supporting every child. A Call to Action Ultimately, this conversation shines a light on the power of community action. Bright Futures stands as a testament to what can be achieved when people come together with compassion, creativity, and a shared vision. As Janet and Elise urge, whether through donations, volunteering, or simply spreading the word, everyone has a role to play in ensuring that no child is left behind. In part three of our Disrupt Education x YouScience series, we move from “here's the problem” and “here's the system” to “here's the proof.”Peter Hostrawser and Alli Dahl sit down with leaders using YouScience at scale — including voices from the Montgomery County ESC in Ohio — to show what happens when aptitude data actually gets used in classrooms, counseling offices, and community workforce pipelines. This episode is about the human side of career-connected learning: students standing taller in the hallway, parents realizing “my kid can actually do this,” districts reshaping course offerings, and employers investing because the talent is finally visible. What you'll hear:- How aptitude-driven guidance is changing student confidence — not just schedules- Real wins from Ohio's Montgomery County ESC- Why employers in the Dayton region pushed for YouScience after seeing the workforce potential- How career navigators are closing the opportunity gap, not just the “talent gap”- Why data only matters when it leads to a better story for a student, a family, or a communityThis episode makes the case: aptitude-based discovery isn't theory — it works when adults build the infrastructure around it.Listen + share with your superintendent, your counselor, and your chamber. Around the globe, and here in the United States, energy markets face huge uncertainties. They include everything from rising geopolitical tensions to a wave of new liquefied natural gas supply, and from concentrated critical mineral supply chains to growing demand for electricity. These uncertainties are reflected by the International Energy Agency in this year's World Energy Outlook, which explores a range of possible energy futures — particularly around oil and gas demand. So how have energy policies at the country level, growing economic warfare, and rising prices impacted the IEA's outlook? How should we understand the role of energy security and geopolitical risk? Here in the US, how have energy policy shifts impacted the outlook? And what role do the transition to electric mobility and the pace of energy innovation play? This week, Jason Bordoff talks to Tim Gould about this year's World Energy Outlook, the IEA's flagship annual report. It projects a world with as much as 3 degrees of warming by 2100, under current policies, or with as little as 1.5 degrees of warming by 2100 if global energy systems quickly decarbonize. Tim is the International Energy Agency's chief energy economist. As part of this role, he co-leads the World Energy Outlook. Tim joined the IEA in 2008 as a specialist on Russian and Caspian energy. Before joining the agency, Tim worked on European and Eurasian energy issues in Brussels. Credits: Hosted by Jason Bordoff and Bill Loveless. Jason and Ashley welcome back Chris Smaje to discuss his new book, “Finding Lights in a Dark Age,” now available for purchase. Chris is a returning guest who first appeared on the podcast to discuss his influential book “Small Farm Future,” which helped shape many of the show's conversations about agricultural futures and sustainability. He returned previously to discuss “Say No to a Farm-Free Future,” his critique of George Monbiot and proponents of lab-grown food alternatives. In this episode, Chris discusses his third book, which assumes a transition to a lower energy future and explores practical approaches to living well despite new challenges. The conversation covers his solar system model of political organization, distributism and Catholic social teaching, the complexities of managing commons and collective resources, lessons learned from running his own farm, and the potential for relocalization of food systems and community structures.Chris draws on his experiences managing a small farm with a community of people, including challenges with woodland commons, cooperative work arrangements, and the practical realities of collective decision-making. The discussion explores demographic challenges, migration patterns, the role of family and household economies, and the distinction between romanticized visions of agrarian life and the nuanced, practical arrangements required to make local systems function effectively. The book argues for a more distributed, locally-oriented approach to politics and economics, moving away from centralized state power toward bottom-up community organization. Chris explores how people might navigate the breakdown of high-energy modernity by developing local autonomy, access to land, and new forms of community organization that balance individual agency with collective needs. The conversation ends with reflections on what flourishing might look like in a post-abundance future and why the so-called Dark Ages may not have been dark for everyone.

The Financial Therapy Podcast - It's Not Just About The Money
What happens when belonging is tied to your bank account? This piece shows how cult-like religious environments turn “sacrificial giving” into financial control, leaving money scripts like “If I don't give, I'll be rejected.” Through client stories—including retirees pressured to keep giving—it highlights how loss of community magnifies money fears. Reframing generosity beyond dollars helps protect well-being while honoring values. The takeaway: healing means separating faith from finances with compassion so choices come from true values, not obligation. #MoneyAndBelonging #FinancialBoundaries #MoneyScripts #FaithAndFinance #HealthyGenerosity #FinancialWellness #MoneyHealing #FinancialEmpowerment #MoneyFreedom #ValuesBasedGiving #MoneyMindset #FinancialTherapy #HealingWithMoney #MoneyControl #MoneyAndFaith A podcast that blends the nuts and bolts of financial advice with the emotions that drive our money decisions. Markets tested the 50-DMA for the third time since October on Friday—and once again, buyers stepped in to defend support. Futures are pointing higher this morning, but the setup still looks like a weak open for Wall Street. With upside resistance near 6,900, the market remains stuck in a well-defined trading range. The big catalyst this week? Nvidia earnings, which could determine whether this consolidation resolves higher—or if we're watching the early stages of a topping process. Short-term signals remain on a sell, and relative strength is cooling. But bullish year-end factors like corporate buybacks, momentum chasing, and neutral professional sentiment continue to provide a floor.
