50 years ago it was the most popular place African Americans on the Eastern Shore could go to hear good music, eat good food and fellowship without fear or violence. It's called Gidden's Do Drop Inn and today is one of the oldest continually owned and operated African American businesses on the Eastern Shore. On the next Another View we broadcast LIVE from the Barrier Island Center and meet the folks behind the Do Drop Inn who keep it going today, including Jane Cabarrus, Owner; Janice Langley, former bartender and now a volunteer; Joan Wilson, whose family provided the juke box which still works today; and singer Black Elvis who has his own corner in this historic hall. Funding provided by the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities.

Our Lisa Godley gives us a closer looka at this talented young singer and his uniques musical style. Singer, Songwriter and Musician Chris English has played the Do Drop Inn for years and loves the Do Drop Inn audience.

The popular performer has played for national television audiences, on the big screen three times and all over the world, but one of his favorite places to play is the Do Drop Inn.

This series of five audio pieces, looks at one of the oldest African American owned businesses on Virginia’s eastern shore. Fifty years ago, it was one of the few safe places blacks could go for good food and entertainment. It was also a hot spot for talented musicians to perform.

Once a popular dance hall, today, the Do Drop Inn also serves as a place for civic meetings, community events, and a base for college students interested in doing community service.

Do Drop Inn Founder Lloyd Giddens made it a point to ensure that everyone who visited the Do Drop Inn felt welcomed.

When the Do Drop Inn opened its doors more than 50 years ago, there weren’t a lot of places where Africans Americans could go and feel safe, but the Do Drop Inn provided just that.

Producer Lisa Godley looks at a historic venue located on Virginia’s Eastern Shore where legendary music was made. The Do-Drop Inn’s 50 year legacy is one of good food, good music, and great fellowship. During its heyday, it hosted musicians such as Delta blues legend Arthur “Big Boy” Crudup.
