Ten years ago, Maggie Rogers was a senior at NYU, scrambling to finish a song for a music production class she was close to failing. The guest critic that week happened to be Pharrell Williams. She played him "Alaska," a track she'd written in about fifteen minutes. It is a bit of folk songwriting crossed with the electronic music she'd fallen for studying abroad. Pharrell told her he'd never heard anything that sounded like it. Someone was filming. The clip went viral, and it launched Maggie into pop stardom. Ten years later, she's released three studio albums, earned a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist, and gone back to school to pick up a master's from Harvard Divinity School, where she studied the spirituality of public gatherings. And in the last few months she's been as visible offstage as on — advocating for free speech in DC, performing for 200,000 people at a protest in Minneapolis alongside Joan Baez, and delivering a haunting performance during the final run of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, which CBS is ending in May. This week host Charlie Harding got to sit down with Maggie live at Chelsea Studios, in front of a room of current NYU students. It's the same school, ten years later, now with Charlie in the professor's chair and Maggie as the visiting artist. It's Thursday, and that means it's time to catch up on politics with The Times-Picayune/New Orleans Advocate's editorial director and columnist, Stephanie Grace. Today, we hear about President Trump's recent endorsement of Rep. Julie Letlow (R-LA), who is running for Sen. Bill Cassidy's seat. Last week, the Supreme Court began to hear oral arguments in Chevron U.S.A. v. Plaquemines Parish. The case could determine the outcome of dozens of lawsuits seeking billions in damages from oil companies that allegedly polluted Louisiana's coastline. The parish argued that the pollution has contributed to Louisiana's land loss crisis. The Times-Picayune/The Advocate's Alex Lubben has been covering this story. He joins us for more.A recent ruling by a 3-judge panel of the U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals could have a far-reaching effect on songwriters, their intellectual property, and music companies. Louisiana songwriter Cyril Vetter reclaimed his total ownership of his 1963 hit “Double Shot of My Baby's Love” when he terminated his contract with Resnik Music Group back in 2022. Copyright laws made it so that he only retained the U.S. rights to the song. But the appeals court ruling struck down that long-time practice. The attorney who represented Vetter, Tim Kappel, joins us to explain what this ruling means for songwriters. —Today's episode of Louisiana Considered was hosted by Bob Pavlovich. #74: What is your baby's behavior at mealtime telling you? Is it possible to spoil a baby by feeding him too much? Can babies even exhibit “bad” behavior? In this episode author, child development and parenting specialist Tina Payne Bryson, PhD is joining me to break it ALL down when it comes to your baby's behavior at mealtimes - diving DEEP into what the science says! Tina is the co-author of well-known parenting books such as The Whole-Brain Child and No Drama Discipline (...aka the BIBLE when my quadruplets were toddlers and I had NO idea how to compassionately discipline!) I love Tina's science-based approach to tackling topics and she's covering a TON of baby behavior in her new book The Bottom Line For Baby. Listen to this episode to learn: 1. Why it's basically impossible to spoil your baby...so don't worry that your doting or your preferred method for starting solid foods is going to spoil your baby. It won't! 2. How to connect and redirect when our babies are playing with or dropping food. Plus Tina also covers how these behaviors change during different stages of infancy. 3. How baby-led weaning helps babies develop “interception” - or the idea of what's going on internally...so they're learning how to recognize & respond to their hunger cues. We're celebrating our 10th anniversary all year by digging in the vaults to re-present classic episodes with fresh commentary. Today, we're revisiting our 2020 conversation with Stax legend David Porter.ABOUT DAVID PORTER Named one of Rolling Stone magazine's “100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time,” Porter is best known for his songwriting partnership with Isaac Hayes that helped define the sound of Memphis's legendary Stax Records. As the first African American staff songwriter at Stax, Porter, along with his partner, wrote and produced songs such as “B-A-B-Y” for Carla Thomas, “Your Good Thing (Is About to End)”—an R&B hit for Mable John that later became a pop and R&B smash for Lou Rawls, and his own recording of “Can't See You When I Want To.” Hayes and Porter are best known, however, for their work with Sam & Dave, including such classic hits as “You Don't Know Like I Know,” “You Got Me Hummin',” “Hold On! I'm Comin'” (which later became a country hit for Waylon Jennings and Jerry Reed), “Soul Man” (which became a hit a second time thanks to the Blues Brothers), “I Thank You” (which was later covered by ZZ Top), and “When Something is Wrong with My Baby” (which was reimagined as a memorable duet between Otis Redding and Carla Thomas, a country hit for Sonny James, and an adult contemporary hit for Linda Ronstadt and Aaron Neville). The list of artists who've covered Porter's songs includes Aretha Franklin, Bruce Springsteen, William Bell, Melissa Ethridge, Bonnie Raitt, Garth Brooks, Etta James, Celine Dion, Wilson Pickett, George Benson, Dusty Springfield, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Staple Singers, Solomon Burke, James Brown, Eric Clapton, B. B. King, Tina Turner, Jackie Wilson, and more. His songs have been used as samples in countless recordings by artists such as Jay-Z, Eminem, Wu-Tang Clan, The Notorious B.I.G., Justin Bieber, Mariah Carey, and others. A highly celebrated giant among celebrated songwriters, Porter was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2005. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company.
Greetings All You Young Jazz Lovers! Another episode of the best damn Jazz music podcast on the internet has dropped, and this episode has drawn its inspiration from the world of film. A cinema masterpiece entitled "Sinners" hit theaters back in April of this year and ever since I can't seem to quench my desire for the blues (I also avoid the sunlight...strange). It's as if I have been seduced and placed under a spell! I wonder, is there such a thing as a Blues Vampire? If so...one must have bit me when I attended the Keb' Mo - Taj Mahal concert in June. Well, in any case... here it is y'all a bit of that voodoo that the Blues do so well. Enjoy! Brian "Katzpheno" Phoenix featuring: Abbey Lincoln - The Music Is The Magic (2007) Mike Stern - Coupe De Ville (2009) Warren Wolf - Frankie & Johnny (2013) Herlin Riley - Wang, Dang, Doodle (2019) Charlie Hunter - We Don't Nobody Nobody Sent ( 2016) Jimmy Greene - No Words (2020) Randy Crawford & Joe Sample - Everyday I Have The Blues (2012) Charlie Haden, Paul Motain & Geri Allen - Blues In Motain (1987) Billy Cobham - Red Baron (1973) Allen Toussaint - Singin' The Blues (2009) Mack Avenue Superband - Test Of Time (2015) Joe Williams & Marlena Shaw - Is You Is Or Is You Ain't My Baby (1989)

The Traveling Wilburys are coming! The Traveling Wilburys are coming! Well, actually they're HERE as of October 29th, 1990 and the release of The Traveling Wilburys vol3 -- the highly anticipated follow-up to the super-group's hit debut record. Despite the shift in decade and the fallen Roy Orbison, the project begun by George Harrison had another hit on their hands with this latest release - successful in both album and singles charts alike. Cuts like Wilbury Twist, Last Night and She's My Baby offered a dose of vitality for the genre of rock'n'roll amidst a crowded marketplace of new sounds that would have been largely unrecognizable a scant decade prior. More importantly, this was new George Harrison music in the 1990s...a signal for more on the horizon? Or perhaps a last burst of excitement... Hosted on Acast. ELLEN DREW: CLASSIC CINEMA STAR OF THE MONTH (069) Whether playing the sweet girl next door or the world-weary casino boss's moll, ELLEN DREW was an incredibly versatile leading lady who was a major star in the 1940s and 50s. She made a career of playing a wide range of roles in various genres — from Westerns to comedies to dramas to horror movies. In this solo episode, I share how I've been feeling nine months postpartum and why I'm much more free in mothering right now. I talk about why I believe we get what we can handle, the importance of celebrating growth moments as parents, and why my recent spontaneous trip to the beach while solo parenting was a big one for me. I also discuss my spiral anxiety around sleep, the struggle of my mouth keeping up with my ADHD brain, and finishing seasons 3-8 of Summer House. Finally, I talk about the upcoming AMA and voicemail episodes on the podcast and I respond to our first listener voicemail about timing, starting new careers, and having babies.Key Takeaway / Points:How I feel now nine months postpartumOn feeling much more free with mothering right nowOn getting what you can handleOn celebrating growth moments as a parentOn my spiral anxiety around sleepOn my mouth keeping up with my ADHD brainOn finishing seasons 3-8 of Summer HouseOn upcoming AMA and voicemail episodes Answering our first listener voicemail question, on timing, starting new careers, and having babiesFind the To Be Magnetic course hereListen to the Singing to My Baby playlist hereFind my Substack on spiral anxiety around sleep hereFind my Voicemail/AMA link hereThis episode may contain paid endorsements and advertisements for products and services.
