The Traveling Wilburys are coming! The Traveling Wilburys are coming! Well, actually they're HERE as of October 29th, 1990 and the release of The Traveling Wilburys vol3 -- the highly anticipated follow-up to the super-group's hit debut record. Despite the shift in decade and the fallen Roy Orbison, the project begun by George Harrison had another hit on their hands with this latest release - successful in both album and singles charts alike. Cuts like Wilbury Twist, Last Night and She's My Baby offered a dose of vitality for the genre of rock'n'roll amidst a crowded marketplace of new sounds that would have been largely unrecognizable a scant decade prior. More importantly, this was new George Harrison music in the 1990s...a signal for more on the horizon? Or perhaps a last burst of excitement... Hosted on Acast. Onze tweede gast is Willem Smit. Ready? ELLEN DREW: CLASSIC CINEMA STAR OF THE MONTH (069) Whether playing the sweet girl next door or the world-weary casino boss's moll, ELLEN DREW was an incredibly versatile leading lady who was a major star in the 1940s and 50s. She made a career of playing a wide range of roles in various genres — from Westerns to comedies to dramas to horror movies. She was nicknamed “The Candy Store Cinderella” because she was discovered scooping ice cream in a candy store on Hollywood Boulevard. And who do you think discovered her? You'll be quite surprised to find out. In this week's episode, we discuss our Star of the Month, ELLEN DREW. Joy to the Burg is an annual Christmas album that features holiday selections from local artists to raise money to benefit Central Pennsylvania residents experiencing homelessness. Proceeds from the album will go to street outreach through Christian Churches United. In 2019, Sheldon Jones was concerned about the unhoused people in Harrisburg. As an artist, he had this idea to make a Christmas album and sell it to help the homeless. “And it's just been it has taken off from there. In 2019, when Joy to the Bird first started, it helped open up a winter overnight shelter for women and non-binary individuals. And so, we're super grateful for the legacy of joining the burg and all the artists, “said Nick Mucci, Director of Development for Christian Churches United of the Tri County Area. Since Joy to the Burg’s inception in 2019, there have been over 80 artists that have been on the annual Christmas album. D-Bo!, songwriter and singer, is featured on the album this year. He has a song titled, “Christmas with My Baby.” “I'm just honored to be a part of this this great project and collaborate with so many great musicians in the area that me. I mean, I'm very familiar with most of them. I've seen a lot of them perform live. A lot of them have seen me. And so, you know, to be able to get all together on one thing and just, you know, for a good cause, it's just it's just a dream come true, you know? “said D-Bo!. CLICK here to purchase the album. In this episode, I'm joined by a fellow stepmom to dive deep into the rollercoaster of emotions and challenges we face. We get real about some of the biggest hurdles that can make us question our sanity... and maybe why we didn't just sign up for yoga instead of a blended family. Here's what we covered:Losing Yourself: That feeling when you wake up and realize you've put yourself last for way too long. We talk about how easy it is to get caught up in being everything to everyone—your stepkids, your partner, their ex, and even the dog. (but seriously) We get into how to reclaim your identity without guilt. The Rabbit Hole of the Kids' Past: Admit it. You've gone down the rabbit hole of comparing yourself to your partner's past life. Whether it's obsessing over family vacations you weren't part of or analyzing photos on Facebook, we've all been there. We unpack the emotional exhaustion of living in the past and how to refocus on your present.Your Partner's Past: Speaking of rabbit holes... let's talk about thinking too much about your partner's previous relationship(s). It's a slippery slope to resentment. We chat about how to move forward with confidence instead of constantly comparing yourself to someone who's not in the picture (but somehow feels like they still are).Adding an 'Ours Baby': How adding a baby together changes the dynamics of the family. Spoiler: It's not always as cute as the Instagram photos make it seem. We share tips on how to balance the excitement with the inevitable complexities it brings, from your stepkids' reactions to how your relationship with your partner shifts.Setting Boundaries with the Ex: This one's a doozy. After our wild celebration of Episode 200, we woke up a little hungover ... so the perfect prescription to get us back in the saddle for this Canadian Holiday Weekend is "Double Shot of My Baby's Love"! by Dick Holler & The Holidays. Despite the band name, you gotta wait for the third version for true frat rock shenanigans. The first cover version is a weird swamp-pop duet by Dale & Grace, we'll leave it up to you to decide if it's BDA-worthy. The third and most famous rendition is by The Swingin' Medallions, who turn the song into a raging kegger! Alabama's K-Otics give the Swingin' M's a run for their money with their fuzz-laden interpretation, also from '66. Finally, we go Down Under to uncover the Cockroaches 1987 version, which we try to exterminate with some textbook slams. You'll be walking on a cloud all week after this episode!
We begin the week in Iowa with Guitar David Bonham and his version of some cover tunes. Hear For What It's Worth, Talk to My Baby, Something and Taxi here on the Music Of America Podcast

She mentions, “everybody kept telling me I was crazy, but when people tell you that, it's probably because you're really up to something.” She describes the depth of sacrifice you have to make to pursue your passion, but “if you really want something, you should just go for it.”At an early age, Anabel's primary school teacher noticed her powerful singing voice and pointed it out to her mother. Anabel shares that her family helped cultivate a path for her to explore her musical talents through concerts and performances throughout childhood. It wasn't until later when Anabel was fully invested in her dream, and the weight and reality of telling her mother, "No, Mom, I'm not gonna be a doctor; I'm gonna be a singer," truly sank in.When reality hit, it took her family some time to accept her decision. Although they initially joined the chorus of “you're crazy for moving out of the country—and to NYC, no less,” they still show their support. Moving to the U.S. was no easy feat, which involves more than just cultural adjustment. Despite visa challenges and navigating how to work legitimately on her music and with management teams, Anabel remained undeterred and kept pushing forward. When asked to elaborate further on the challenges of breaking into the NYC music scene, she mentions having to create a name for yourself. It wasn't just about adapting to a new culture; it was also trying to to keep up with the fast-pace lifestyle of New York City. With everything moving so quickly, you have to figure out your impact in a city full of hustle. Part of making her mark in NYC involved collaborating with artists like Bronx rapper Capella Gray, which gave her a platform to blend R&B, Hip Hop, and Afrobeat influences with her Spanish lyrics. This fusion of genres, driven by her cultural and musical background, creates a truly distinct sound. She also shared the realization of feeling like she was in it and really forging a path when she collaborated with Quimico Ultra Mega, a well-known Dominican rapper. Much of the collaborative and nomadic artistry of her pathway has helped propel her creations and develop the uniqueness of her sound. As she continues to explore her sound and open her heart, you can expect to hear the tenderness and fierceness of her love in her upcoming single "My Baby.”“Through thick and thin, you're always gonna be my baby,” she shares about the message behind the track. While the song focuses on the good times and reveling in the best parts of being in love, it also casts the importance of being truly in it with someone, no matter the trials and tribulations. Love can be complicated, but it's worth the twists, turns, and growth. The upbeat nature of the song and pop influences make it perfect music to celebrate the sweetness of being in love. When asked what her favorite part of making this track was, she mentioned the opportunity for her to step out of her comfort zone and hit a new range of notes. She joked, “I will be the one to complain about something, while I'm doing it, but I'm still getting it done even though it's hard.” She described the moment of realization— “Oh, I got this” when listening back over her recording and feeling the triumph of accomplishing something challenging and new. Between catchy and heart-stirring melodies, a new range of notes, and a fresh take on love, you can expect to hear “My Baby” on September 13th on all streaming platforms. In this solo episode, I share how I've been feeling nine months postpartum and why I'm much more free in mothering right now. I talk about why I believe we get what we can handle, the importance of celebrating growth moments as parents, and why my recent spontaneous trip to the beach while solo parenting was a big one for me. I also discuss my spiral anxiety around sleep, the struggle of my mouth keeping up with my ADHD brain, and finishing seasons 3-8 of Summer House. Finally, I talk about the upcoming AMA and voicemail episodes on the podcast and I respond to our first listener voicemail about timing, starting new careers, and having babies.Key Takeaway / Points:How I feel now nine months postpartumOn feeling much more free with mothering right nowOn getting what you can handleOn celebrating growth moments as a parentOn my spiral anxiety around sleepOn my mouth keeping up with my ADHD brainOn finishing seasons 3-8 of Summer HouseOn upcoming AMA and voicemail episodes Answering our first listener voicemail question, on timing, starting new careers, and having babiesFind the To Be Magnetic course hereListen to the Singing to My Baby playlist hereFind my Substack on spiral anxiety around sleep hereFind my Voicemail/AMA link hereThis episode may contain paid endorsements and advertisements for products and services.
