Inspired by the true story. Included in the Prize-Winning Literary Fiction Series from LaPuerta Books and MediaIn 1945, Milton Reynolds introduced the ballpoint to the United States and triggered the biggest single-day shopping riot in history at Gimbels in Manhattan.The Reynolds International Pen Company made $5 million in eight weeks during the first non-wartime Christmas season. Thereafter, increasing competition from established companies such as Eversharp triggered several years of the "Pen Wars."

Y su nacimiento está íntimamente ligado con la propia invención del bolígrafo. Con la invención, o con su patente, porque el origen del bolígrafo, que luego BIC popularizó, es polémico y confuso.Hay que remontarse a finales de siglo XIX, cuando John Loud, un curtidor de pieles norteamericano, patentó un invento que consistía en un tubo de tinta con una bola en un extremo para escribir, y dos adicionales de apoyo, para que no se atascase. Era muy rudimentario, pensado sobre todo para marcar superficies ásperas, como madera, piel, papel rugoso... Era muy difícil de fabricar, y Loud nunca llegó a comercializarlo, por lo que la patente caducó sin llegar a trascender demasiado.En las siguientes décadas, siguiendo esta misma estructura de bolas, se presentaron numerosas patentes en diversos lugares de todo el mundo, pero ninguna cuajó ni alcanzó el éxito. Pasó bastante tiempo, hasta los años 30 del pasado siglo, para que alguien lograra desarrollar la idea con éxito. Fue obra del húngaro Laszlo Jozsef Biro, aunque el proceso no fue fácil. Era un auténtico inventor en serie, con más de 30 patentes registradas en su vida. Era zurdo, y estaba cansado de escribir a pluma, porque se manchaba con la tinta mientras iba redactando. Por lo que desarrolló un instrumento de escritura con la bola en el extremo del cilintro para la tinta. La gran diferencia con el diseño de Loud es que el conducto era de muy poco diámetro, lo que facilitaba la capilaridad de la tinta. Además, junto con su hermano, químico, desarrollaron una tinta muy viscosa que evitaba los derrames y la evaporación, y que además se secaba rápidamente.La idea, pese a todo, no logró arrancar en un principio. El diseño no convenció ni a fabricantes ni a la banca, que debía financiar el desarrollo. La casualidad hizo que en un viaje de trabajo, porque Biro también era periodista, se encontrase con el expresidente de Argentina, Agustín Justo, al que sí que impresionó su invento. Tanto que les invitó a irse a su país, para montar allí una fábrica.Los hermanos en un primer momento rechazaron la idea, porque consideraban que no se les había perdido nada allí. Pero siendo judíos, y con el nazismo expandiéndose por Europa, se lo pensaron mejor y allá que se fueron para Argentina. En el viaje les acompañó su socio y financiero habitual, Johann Georg Meyne.Ya en Argentina hacen dos cosas: castellanizan sus nombres, convirtiéndose en Ladislao José Biro, Jorge Biro y Juan Jorge Meyne; y fundan la empresas Biro-Mayne-Biro. En 1943 patentan su invento, al que llaman birome, que es como sigue conociéndose al bolígrafo en muchos países sudamericanos.Poco después, vendió los derechos para Estados Unidos a las compañías Eversharp y Eberhard Faber, por 2 millones de dólares. Se convirtió en un éxito de ventas en Norteamérica. Pero el gran salto llegó en 1951. Aquel año, le vendieron los derechos de comercialización en Europa a Marcel Bich y Édouard Buffard. Estos dos empresarios franceses habían fundado en 1944 una empresa llamada Societe PPA, dedicada a los instrumentos de escritura. Bich mejora el diseño de Biro, solucionando dos problemas: el exceso de manchas que generaba y el rápido secado de la tinta. En 1953 empiezan a comercializarlo, bajo la marca BIC. Y nace la leyenda: se convirtió en la herramienta de escritura con tinta más popular.

The series was heard on the Mutual Radio Network from January 11 to December 26, 1952, and it was syndicated from 1949 to 1952 with Pat McGeehan as Eddie Jordan. Bea Benaderet and Elvia Allman portrayed Mrs. Kennedy. The supporting cast included Averback, Conreid, Leeds, McGovern, Lurene Tuttle, Ben Wright, Sandra Gould, and Jeffrey Silver. Harry Zimmerman led the orchestra with John Easton and Jack McCoy announcing. The show popularized the 1940s catch phrase, "Likewise, I'm sure."
