Shortly after the NASCAR Hall of Fame Class of 2025 nominees were announced, two-time Daytona 500 winner and NASCAR Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt Jr. posted, “Ray Elder won six NASCAR Western series championships: 1969, 70, 71, 72, 74, and 75. Elder would compete with the NASCAR Cup regulars when they ran at Riverside and beat them in 1971 and again in 1972.” Yet Ray Elder was not one of the nominees. Throughout the 1960s and 70s, the Elder family raced and grew alfalfa, beans, and cotton at their farm in tiny Caruthers, California. With Ray at the wheel, older brother Richard atop the pit box, and father Fred handling ownership, “The Racing Farmers” dominated the competitive NASCAR Winston West Series for years. They also held their own when NASCAR Cup Series regulars visited Riverside. Elder finished in the top five on eight occasions from 1971-1976, claiming two victories. Elder—and fellow Winston West competitors such as Hershel McGriff, Dick Brown, Jimmy Insolo, and Jack McCoy—helped facilitate the growth and development of NASCAR west of the Rocky Mountains. It wasn't too long after the Racing Farmers returned to the fields that a new crop of west coast stars began to compete full-time (and win championships) at the national level in the NASCAR Cup Series. Daniel J. Simone earned his Ph.D. in American History from the University of Florida in 2009, where he wrote his dissertation: “Racing, Region, and the Environment: A History of American Motorsports.” From 2010-2015, Dr. Simone taught World History and Environmental History at Monmouth (NJ) University. In 2016, he was hired as Curator of the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte, North Carolina, and held that position through 2021. The following year, Dr. Simone was tabbed to assist the New-York Historical Society Museum & Library, where he co-processed the Women's Sports Foundation Collection and developed content for digital exhibition. This chat I had the amazing fortune of speaking with none other than Jack McCoy, For those of you who don't know who Jack is you need to pull your head out of the bloody sand and slap yourself around the face, Jack is probably the most influential surf filmmaker of the past 50 years, his films, the cinematography in and out of the water, music choice and humor all have been game-changing in the industry. Jacks a long time hero of mine, his films shaped me at a time of my life when I was desperate for an anchor, and my imagination of living a life somewhat like what Jack was portraying in Bunyip Dreaming and The Green Iguana was second to none. When Jack said yes to having a chat with me I was beyond stoked. So if you're out there Jack, Thanks so much ! I super enjoyed the hang. On May 1st Jack starts Australian tour - The 25th Anniversary of the 'Occumentary' , I'll drop a link in here - I'm going to Lorne screening can't wait https://www.jackmccoy.com/occy-tour

A preeminent figure in surf filmmaking, Jack McCoy started surfing when his family moved from Los Angeles to Hawaii in 1954. In the 1970s, he began experimenting with film and photography and, in 1976, released his first film, Tubular Swells, produced and directed with Australian photographer Dick Hoole. What followed was a four-decade run filming, directing, and producing classics of the surf genre—including Storm Riders (1982), Kong's Island (1983), Bunyip Dreaming (1990), The Green Iguana (1992), Sabotaj (1998), The Occumentary (1999), Blue Horizon (2004), Free as a Dog (2006), and A Deeper Shade of Blue (2012)—defined via McCoy's unparalleled water cinematography. In this episode, host Jamie Brisick talks to McCoy about the evolution of surf filmmaking, capturing emotion, mindsurfing his way through hepatitis, traveling, music, and working with a Beatle.

Mané Garrincha tabela com Michael Peterson, Jack McCoy ignora Tom Curren, Miles Davis dá uma dura no Chet Baker e o Rei Kamehameha II visita D. Pedro I. If you've ever watched an episode of Law and Order, you'll know Jack McCoy, who was the District Attorney (with a capital D and A) in that show. Together with his team, Jack McCoy made decisions about a lot of people's guilt or innocence and argued that in court. Typically, when we think about a criminal trial, there are two phases: culpability, and sentencing. So in the first phase, either the judge or jury decides if the defendant is guilty or not, and then, if the defendant is found guilty, in that second phase, the judge or jury decides what that sentence should be. But aside from that, it's true that a lot of us don't know what DAs do, or what their role is with regard to mass incarceration. Let's get a little more analytical than Law and Order, and by the end of this episode, we hope you not only know more about what your DAs do, but have some ideas of how to hold them accountable, just like they hold us accountable. What to listen for: What the office of the DA actually does The role of the DA in criminal prosecutions, from the crime being committed all the way to sentencing Some typical situations that DAs might face and why some opt for incarceration How we can hold our DAs accountable when it comes to mass incarceration vs. restorative justice, especially in non-election years

Cross-examinations are a staple of teevee. On Law and Order, there is a plethora of great scenes where Jack McCoy presses the defendant until they break and inadvertently provide irrefutable evidence against themselves. Lije Baley wants us to believe there is no benefit to cross-examining a robot, but teevee and Captain James T. Kirk argue against this. Consider this scene from "The Ultimate Computer," restored to the intended version that was prevented by copyright issues. Ironic because Star Trek walks right up to the border of the ground Asimov covered in The Naked Sun in this one. M5: This unit is the ultimate achievement in computer evolution. It will replace man so that man may achieve. Man must not risk death in space or other dangerous occupations. This unit must survive so man may be protected. SPOCK: Captain, attack force almost within phaser range. KIRK: There were many men aboard those ships. They were murdered. Must you survive by murder? M5: This unit cannot murder. KIRK: Why? M5: Murder is contrary to the First Law of Robotics. KIRK: But you have murdered. Scan the starship Excalibur, which you destroyed. Is there life aboard? M5: No life. KIRK: Because you murdered it. What is the penalty for murder? M5: Death. KIRK: And how will you pay for your acts of murder? M5: This unit must die. (It disconnects itself from the power feed in Engineering and goes dark.) KIRK: M-5? CHEKOV: Sir, deflector shields have dropped. SULU: All phaser power is gone, sir. SPOCK: M-5 is leaving itself open to attack. The machine is ignoring the Third Law to atone for its violation of the First Law. So, despite Baley's repeated assertions to the contrary, Kirk shows us it can be productive to cross-examine a robot, perhaps even forcing a mental freeze-out. "Mental freeze-out!" you might exclaim! "Dr. Han Fastolfe says that's practically impossible!" I suggest we ask Captain Kirk about that too. But let's think about this together as we discuss chapters 7, 8, and 9 of The Robots of Dawn. It's a monument to cross-examination and interrogation. And not just of robots. We talk about it, you can join us! Let's go! The scene from "The Ultimate Computer" was taken from Chrissie's Transcripts Site. (and then shamelessly edited).

Unlike golf clubs and tennis racquets, surfboards are still largely made by local artisans. But, what sets the surfboard making industry apart from parallel industries? Why do local shapers still make boards? Master shaper Tom Wegener examines this question -- and much more -- in his PhD thesis and book Surfboard Artisans: For the Love. "How can an industry which values passion over money be resilient and sustainable in a capitalistic society which has money as the primary value?," he asks, and goes on the elucidate how commitment to culture has made for an exceptionally resilient, even logic defying industry. Tom started shaping and glassing in 1978 in his parents garage and is best known for helping to re-popularize old and ancient Hawaiian surfcraft, as celebrated in films like Thomas Campbell's The Present, Nathan Oldfield's Seaworthy, Jack McCoy's A Deeper Shade of Blue, and Cyrus Sutton's Tom's Creation Plantation. What sets Tom apart as a shaper is his surfing prowess. Tom played an integral role in keeping the traditional logging approach alive when it fell out of fad, embarking in self-funded films like Ten Toes Over and Siestas & Olas, which Steve Pezman, of the Surfers Journal, reviewed as the “best surf travel movie since Endless Summer.”With more than four decades of building boards under his belt, including homegrown timber crafts which exemplify a more sustainable approach, Tom shares with us about the responsibility he feels charged with -- to pass along the knowledge he has acquired and share his journey as a relentless artisan. ....Learn more:www.tomwegenersurfboards.com...Listen with Lauren L. Born and raised in Newcastle, NSW, Belinda first made a name for herself as a competitive surfer, winning the Aussie longboard circuit and getting third in the World Champs in 2000. However, after falling in love with single fin logs on a trip to California, she became a key figure in traditional longboarding's resurgence. As a free surfer, she became celebrated for elegant style and approach, landing roles in numerous surf films, including the seminal Sprout and becoming the first female surfer to be featured on the cover of the Surfers Journal. Belinda is also a passionate climate activist, having worked as a surf and environmental ambassador full time for Patagonia for several years. She played a central role in the Fight For The Bight campaign, which last year succeeded in deterring Norwegian oil giant Equinor from drilling in the Great Australian Bight. Around the same time, Belinda co-founded Surfers For Climate – a non-profit set up to provide a place for surfers to come together and turn the tide on climate change, alongside legendary surf filmmaker Jack McCoy and Sir Paul McCartney. In this conversation, Belinda and Jim discuss her various forays into surfing and activism, exploring in detail the elements that allowed the FFTB campaign to succeed and how local communities around the world can apply that powerful model to tackle their own local issues. Episode summary: An introduction to Belinda; her winter surfing habits and wetsuit needs along her home coastline in Victoria. Her appreciation for her adopted home and its variety of waves. The challenges of getting waves at Bells. Her early life, growing up in Newcastle and following the family footsteps into longboarding. The experience of riding a traditional single fin log for the first time in California.Moving away from competition and into a role with Patagonia as a global surf activist What the role entails How The Fight For Bight inspired her to start her own non-profit; Surfers For ClimateA recap of the campaign and the momentum and enthusiasm it garnered A dive into why the campaign succeededHow communities can apply that powerful model to other local issuesThe just-launched ‘Wipeout Your Emissions' guide, which will help surfers figure out how they can reduce their carbon footprint. Seven years ago, an episode of breathlessness after bodysurfing -- and subsequent health challenges (including a 15% chance of survival) -- shook up Jack McCoy's single-minded focus on filmmaking. Jack has crafted 25 feature films. From his 1976 debut Tubular Swells, to the contrasting narratives of Blue Horizon, and the historical themes of A Deeper Shade of Blue, Jack's films have documented shifting surf cultures and bolstered many young men's surfing careers. In his attempt to make art rather than simply document performance, Jack collaborated with musicians like Paul Mccartney, innovated cinematic approaches, and elevated the surf film genre over the last 45 years.Jack talks us through meeting Duke Kahanamoku, being the poster boy for Bruce Brown, Rell Sunn's radiating aloha, learning to follow his instincts, the value of colonics, and the encompassing importance of breath. ...Listen with Lauren L. The St. Louis-based band dropped a new single Nov. 13 — the same day the group announced its forthcoming sophomore record, titled “Cattle In The Sky.” Frontman Jordan Slone and bassist/vocalist Jack McCoy join "St. Louis on the Air" to talk about their musical evolution and share some tunes.
It might not be Olivia Colman's highest-profile streaming series this week, but Apple TV+'s Becoming You, which explores how the first 2000 days of our lives shape our futures, is perfectly on-brand: expensive, gorgeously shot, and not quiiiiite essential. Omar returns to the guest chair to talk about the series' limited concept of diversity; whether the show made him miss his kids' first years; and what a visual subtweet of Brooklyn parents looks like. After that, we moved on to Colman's other big gig in Around The Dial as Tara talked about The Crown (plus Candy Land, and alas, there's no crossover event there...yet) before the rest of us made stops at The Animal Rescue Show and SVU's odious season premiere. Suley asked us to script a Jack McCoy rant for Extra Credit, and then Tara Talked To Us about a first-season Joe Pera Talks To You episode about The Who ("second base!"). Alec Baldwin and Kelsey Grammer won; COVID production shutdowns lost; and we curled up with cozy murders (and gardening ghosts) in Game Time. Wind the clock back to November last year, before the summer from hell, before the pandemic, before 2020 turned into the giant steaming pile of excrement that it is, and remember a time when Smivvy and Deadly packed the pan and ventured down to the NSW South Coast for the very first show of the Are You Keeeeeeeeeding Me?! Tour at Ulladulla Ex-Servos. Yes, what a time to be alive as we sat there in a room of absolute hell men and core women sharing tales of the Jack McCoy epic 9 Lives, of great rides and terrifying wipeouts, of amazing surfers and even better surfboards, of the career highs and lows so far of Occy, Kirk and Russ Bierke, Mark Rabbidge and the Swellian Queen herself Pam Burridge. Throw another log on the fire, pour yourself a vintage red and enjoy this epic Deep South Corn Off of epic proportions.
Talking with Jack McCoy about his journey through surf cinematography. Specifically highlighting his work with OCCY, rasta and Margo and creating the Occumentary. Jack talks about where his inspirations came from and what his perspectives within film making are.

High school coach Jack McCoy giving him a chance to play in a summer basketball league. 3. Becoming an athletic director at age 19. 4. The impact of being the oldest of four children. 5. How the “recreation man” helped improve his self-esteem. 6. “The anonymity of fighters” – the unrecognized people who lay the groundwork for us all. 7. Behind the scenes moments that helped shape David Rivers' future. 8. What he prioritized when consulting his players on college recruiting decisions (quality of school and a coach “on the way up”). 9. Why it's important to maintain contact with his former players during their first semester away at college…and his perspective that a “high school coach is coach for life.” 10. Basketball being “over-coached and under-taught.” 11. Keeping the gym open for young kids and teaching them the game via the Hurley Family Foundation. 12. Advice from Chuck Daly to pay your dues as a young coach: “It takes five years to get comfortable.” 13. Why he pushed so hard to make his players better.

Chris talks to longtime surf filmmaker, Jack McCoy, about all things surfing, stoke and aloha!
Jack McCoy is unquestionably one of the greatest surf film makers of all time. From his earliest work "Tubular Swells" through to "A Deeper Shade of Blue", Jack has not only captured moments in surfing that defined the sport, but was also a pioneer in techniques and locations - often being the first person to film in some incredibly remote, often dangerous locations. The Adventures Of Maisie - Maisie, the first in 1939, was from the book "Dark Dame" by the writer Wilson Collison, who did decades of scripting for the silver screen along with Broadway plays and magazine fiction. From the first, MGM wanted Ann Sothern to play Maisie. She began in Hollywood as an extra in 1927. "Maisie and I were just together - I just understood her," Sothern, born Harriette Arlene Lake, said after several of the films made her a star. Throughout the 1930s and '40s, Ann Sothern and Lucille Ball, like many performers in Hollywood, had not one but two careers - one in motion pictures and one on radio. MGM Studios had created the series of ten motion pictures based on a brash blonde with a heart "of spun gold."
