Every leader has had to manage through crisis at some point or another and, with covid, everyone has a fairly recent experience. Kathleen Murphy, SVP at Farnum Center, had to manage through multiple crises during covid. The decision-making process, data needed, and sheer speed of events make crisis management far different from the normal day-to-day. In this episode, with covid as a background, we look at lessons learned from leading through any crisis and what it tells us about being prepared, how to operate in the crisis, and what takeaways exist after.
Mads Qwist runs a consulting company in Denmark sharing this understanding with organizations and leaders. Brooke Wheeldon-Reece is the president and chief executive officer for SPARK Initiative in Tampa, Florida. Cheryl Wilkie is the chief operating officer for Farnum Center in Manchester, New Hampshire. Melissa Palazzo-Hart is COO & managing director at Sid Lee USA in Los Angeles, California. Today you get to hear a panel discussion from the Portland Beyond Limits Business Summit. You will hear stories that demonstrate the impact of this understanding across a variety of organizations, each with a vastly different set of circumstances. Whether it’s creating culture change within a company, turning a company around, or helping a company close its doors, the understanding is the secret weapon that unites these stories of powerful transformation and hope.
In today’s conversation, I speak with Kathleen Murphy. Kathleen was used to showing up in business with high energy, excitement, and enthusiasm. To her, this “intensity” never appeared to be a hindrance to her work, until she was able to take pause and look closer. Through understanding the principles of thought, she now sees that overexcitement is actually the result of a sped up mind, leading to mental distortion. Kathleen points to the indispensable value of neutrality as the source of clarity, fresh insight, higher efficiency, effective leadership, and genuine collaboration. Kathleen Murphy, M.Ed., LADC, is the VP of Substance Abuse Services for Farnum Center, overseeing Farnum’s Outpatient Programs, Medical Detox, and Admissions. Kathleen has been providing treatment to those affected by substance use disorder since 2003. She earned her master’s degree in counseling in 2010 from the University of New Hampshire and is a Licensed Drug and Alcohol Counselor.

In this podcast, we(Eirik and Mara) are fresh of the boat at a 3 day visit at the Farnum center in Manchester,NH. Here is what they do:The Farnum Center help people realize their own inner health by coming to an understanding that every human being has a healthy internal core that is fully accessible to them. Everyone has inner resiliency and the ability to bounce back and overcome adversity when we gain perspective of what gets in the way. Their clients learn about your innate capacity for health, insight, and contentment. You will also learn how accessing a healthier perspective about your life will help you leave your past behind. We will guide you through your journey from the day you enter our program until you are ready to leave. Working as a team, you will reclaim your life from addiction to alcohol and other drugs, and become a happier and more positive person. Now, if that doesn't already convey how awesome this center is, we can vouch that it is! In this episode you will hear us dissect some of the insights we gained around addiction, and how that plays into all other "symptoms" we see in the world right now. What we find especially hopeful about their approach to helping people with addiction is:- They look for the health and wisdom in the person, not for what's wrong. - They teach them about how their mind creates their world, and therefore how they can go beyond the situation and circumstance around them. - They teach them how the mind works in such a way that they don't get put off by bad feelings, and therefore don't need to do the drugs or alcohol to help them deal with it. They are able to deal with it internally, by not being afraid of their experience. We feel like this nuggets are HUMAN nuggets, that any human can see more about, and will help everyone in the world. If we all just saw more of those points, we would live in a different world. We hope you enjoy this first introepisode from the two of us - and as we mention the next ones from Farnum Center will be from the staff and clients themselves!!
Today, human health care is in a critical position. 54% – 65% of all healthcare professionals are currently estimated to burn out due to stress. Current methods to stem the tide of burnout have focused on coping strategies and techniques that deal with stress. Unfortunately, attempting to deal with stress after it occurs increases the day to day workload. Indeed, the tools themselves must be utilized again and again for short-term satisfaction or effects. Not only are stress and burnout optional, they are preventable once we understand where our experience is coming from.See for yourself how:Previous ideas about stress have led to burnout in the helping professionsTo bounce back from adversity and prevent stressTo create a psychological immunity to perceived stressJoin Jeanne Catherine Gray as she hosts Joe Bailey in a show about rediscovering the resilient Self that is already there, whole and indestructable. Have you ever wondered if you just can’t take it anymore; that the stress of helping others is just too much? Do you think stress is inevitable or is it optional? Have you ever wished you could recapture the feelings and passion you once had for helping others? Not only is stress and burnout optional, it is totally preventable once we get the paradigm of where our experience is coming from correct. The Three Principles Single Paradigm is the cure and the prevention of burnout for ourselves. Once we are enlivened by our own innate resilience, it is possible to pass it on to those we are helping. Our example is a beacon of hope for others. Join Jeanne Catherine Gray as she hosts Joe Bailey in a show about rediscovering the resilient Self that is already there, whole and indestructable.
