What if healing isn't about fixing ourselves but about slowing down enough to feel ourselves again? In this deeply grounding and illuminating episode of Fire and Soul, I sit down with my somatics therapist and mentor, Kate Appleton, whose five decades of experience bridge psychology, art, education, and storytelling. Together we explore what it truly means to live an embodied life — one rooted in sensation, relationship, and soul — and how to meet ourselves and each other beyond performance or productivity.Kate shares her wisdom on why healing doesn't mean eliminating discomfort but learning how to be with it differently, and how true transformation happens through safety, trust, and connection. You'll hear personal reflections from my own somatic journey, the science behind how our bodies communicate safety and stress, and how small, practical rituals can reawaken our aliveness. This conversation is for anyone who's ready to slow down, listen deeply, and return to the sacredness of being human. In This Episode, You'll Discover:• What somatics truly means and how it brings us home to our “living wholeness”• How to notice the body's subtle cues and sensations that signal truth and safety• Why leaning back in your chair can rewire your nervous system and deepen connection• How to create healthy boundaries through embodied awareness• The cultural cost of constant consumption and the invitation to return to creation• Simple ways to weave ritual, stillness, and silence into everyday life• How to help the next generation reconnect through values, integrity, and presence• Why slowing down is the most radical act of love and leadership in modern times “When we can feel the edges of our body, we remember where we end and the world begins.” — Kate AppletonResources Mentioned:Learn more about Kate's work: kate-appleton.comExplore Attachment & Somatics Training (next cohort begins February 2026) — use code MICHELLESORRO for $500 off at https://traumaandsomatics.comConsumer to Creator is now open for registration — join the free live immersion at consumertocreator.com Connect with Michelle on Instagram: @michelle.sorro Hosted on Acast. I used to think values were something you discovered once and then lived by forever, like a moral compass that stayed fixed. But I'm starting to wonder if they're more like constellations. They shift a little as you move through different seasons of life. For a long time, I treated my values like a checklist: family, creativity, freedom. Those were the things that mattered. But when they stopped feeling aligned, I felt completely disoriented. Connect with Abagail Instagram All the Links! It wasn't that my morals changed. Rather, it was that my priorities matured. And while that process can feel confusing and uncomfortable, it can also make space for who you're becoming. Sometimes the same value takes a new shape. For instance, freedom might look less like flexibility and more like emotional peace. Today, I'm sharing what it felt like to go through that shift, what helped me slow down and listen, and how I began to see my values in a new light. In this episode, we continue our series on the Garden of Our Hearts and talk about the cultivation of beauty. Beauty has the power to transform, heal, and lift us into communion with God, but it must be cultivated with care and intention. We discuss what it means to co-create with God, slow down and savor little moments, and rediscover beauty in the people closest to us. Even when the world around us feels barren or artificial, the Lord invites us to see beauty with new eyes and let the Holy Spirit reveal His presence in unexpected ways. When have you had an experience with beauty that transformed your heart? What lies and limitations do I believe about my own creativity? How does God want to play with me in the dirt this week? In what ways am I too busy for creativity and beauty? What beauty does the Lord want to show you - both within you and outside of you? Discussion Questions: Have you come across AI art recently? How did you respond to it? In what ways have you limited your own creativity? Who or what inspires you to be more creative? How will you cultivate beauty and express creativity in your life? Quotes to Ponder: "Every expression of true beauty can thus be acknowledged as a path leading to an encounter with the Lord Jesus." -Pope Francis "We must wonder! We must create an environment of wonder! We must create a climate of wonder! This task is closest to the family. . . . Wonder is needed so that beauty might enter into human life, into society and the nation. This beauty is the foundation and the creative moment of the culture. It is impossible to create culture by administrative means. These means can only destroy it. . . . We need to marvel at everything that is found in man." (Saint Pope John Paul II) Scripture for Lectio: "Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, think about these things." What happens when life forces you to stop—and that pause changes everything? Melissa Gonzalez, Principal at MG2 Design and author of "The Purpose Pivot: How Dynamic Leaders Put Vulnerability and Intuition into Action", knows firsthand. A medical crisis made her rethink what success truly means. Once a Wall Street professional turned retail design expert and author of "The Pop-Up Paradigm", Melissa built a thriving business helping brands tell their stories through physical spaces. But when her own defining moment arrived, she found a new story to tell—one about purpose, well-being, and the strength found in vulnerability. In this episode of Leveraging Thought Leadership, Melissa joins Bill Sherman to explore how life's disruptions can fuel transformation. She shares her evolution from building pop-up experiences for brands to helping leaders embrace intuition, pause with purpose, and redefine balance. Through dozens of interviews with women leaders, Melissa uncovered a truth many resist—taking time to pause isn't weakness; it's wisdom. Melissa also discusses the art of integrating her message of purpose into her business world. She reveals how partnerships with brands like Nordstrom, Simon G. Fine Jewelry, and Crate & Barrel amplified her book's message through events and collaborations that celebrate defining moments. Her story is a masterclass in aligning personal growth, thought leadership, and business strategy—without losing authenticity. From managing the emotional and physical toll of overachievement to embracing JOMO (the joy of missing out), Melissa's journey offers a reminder: the most powerful pivots often happen when you stop chasing and start listening. Three Key Takeaways: • Pause is Power – Taking time to slow down, reflect, and prioritize well-being isn't a weakness—it's a strategic strength. Melissa's personal experience taught her that real success comes from making intentional choices rooted in impact, not busyness. • Authentic Integration Fuels Influence – Thought leadership grows when your personal mission aligns with your professional platform. Melissa leveraged her network, brand partnerships, and events to bring The Purpose Pivot to life—blending purpose-driven storytelling with business acumen. • Vulnerability Creates Connection – Sharing personal defining moments invites others to reflect on their own. Through candid storytelling and interviews, Melissa shows that embracing vulnerability deepens relationships, inspires trust, and sparks meaningful change. If Melissa Gonzalez's story inspired you to rethink success, balance, and the power of the pause, don't stop there. Check out The Non-Linear Thought Leadership episode with Elizabeth McCourt. Both conversations explore how vulnerability, authenticity, and unexpected turns can become catalysts for growth. Melissa's journey shows how a defining moment can reshape purpose. Elizabeth's episode builds on that idea—revealing how non-linear paths, reinvention, and resilience fuel thought leadership. Listen to both, and you'll walk away ready to embrace uncertainty, lead with heart, and turn every pivot into possibility. Listen next: The Non-Linear Thought Leadership | Elizabeth McCourt
How do we discover what is life-giving in us? And how do we find and name that which is destructive and nullifying in us? And might we attend to the never-ending process of discerning with maturity and nuance which is which without falling into simplistic ways of looking, so we can bring ourselves to the complexity of our lives and one another with integrity and care? And what might we trust, and lean upon, to help us do this well? This week's conversation is hosted, as always, by Lizzie Winn and Justin Wise of Thirdspace. Episode Overview 00:00 Introduction and Context of the Conversation 02:57 Our Source for This Week, by Nick Cave 06:05 The Nature of Evil and Human Complexity 08:41 The Inherent Potential for Goodness in Humanity 12:00 The Cosmic Disposition Towards Goodness 14:47 The Duality of Good and Evil in Human Experience 17:45 The Responsibility of Attending to Sorrow 20:46 The Choice to Cultivate Goodness 24:05 The Power of Intentional Living 26:41 The Complexity of Human Relationships 30:01 The Importance of Slowing Down and Reflecting 33:01 Conclusion and Reflection on the Conversation Woven Into Everything I am inclined to believe in a form of intelligence within the universe, as I hold that consciousness or ‘intelligence' exists throughout everything, that it goes all the way down to the fundamental atomic matter of things. This force, woven into everything - both living and non-living - is inherently good. If we choose, we could call this force God. I view this power as a kind of cosmic disposition that grows, understands, and empathises with us - suffers with us, you might say - and that humans are ‘fractal', as Cormac so beautifully puts it, exemplars or metaphors of the melancholic nature of this God-soaked universe. I believe that evil exists not only within the human heart but also as an external energy separate from us, moving through the world - a nullifying, destructive potency - 'going to and fro in the earth and walking up and down in it'. We can see it, if we choose, all around us. Yet, we can act as the remedy to this existential predicament by directing our efforts towards the world's flourishing and away from its destruction, in whatever way we can. It is our duty to attend to the sorrow of the universe - the sorrow of God. Photographer and visual storyteller Ilan Sánchez captures more than moments — he captures meaning. Through analog film photography, street portraits, and honest connection, his work explores how slowing down helps us truly see people, not just pass by them. From Mexico City to Oaxaca, Ilan builds community through art that gives back instead of taking, documenting culture, identity, and everyday life with intention. Born and raised in Oaxaca, he offers a rare local perspective on how the city's sudden global spotlight — from mezcal to design and tourism — is reshaping its creative and cultural landscape. This conversation dives deep into street photography, creative process, authenticity, and the future of art in a world that moves too fast.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/globetrotters-podcast--5023679/support.

They are both used to moving fast and taking on big challenges, but the Camino offers them something different: a chance to slow down, be present, and savor the shared experience of walking this ancient pilgrimage path. READY TO BRING HOME YOUR CAMINO EXPERIENCE? Registration in our new pilgrim community, La Terraza, opens on Tuesday, November 4 for anyone who has already walked one of the Camino routes. The La Terraza community takes your Camino experience to the next level, with targeted audio sessions that walk you through the transition back home and numerous opportunities to connect with other pilgrims who share the awe and wonder of making this pilgrimage. IS 2026 YOUR YEAR TO WALK THE CAMINO? I have ONE spot left in my September 2026 Camino Experience group. Let's get started together: https://thecaminoexperience.com/walk-with-me/ (The May 2026 group is full.) #youonthecamino #caminodesantiago #firsttimepilgrim #thecaminoexperience #caminopodcast

In this episode, we talk about what it means to weather the storms of life well. Everyone experiences difficult moments throughout their lives and these storms come in all shapes and sizes. In each one, we have the opportunity to respond from a place of truth and peace instead of fear. We share practical ways we've learned to weather the storms in our own lives, from simplifying life to immersing ourselves in Scripture. We also explore how pain, though difficult, can lead us into deeper healing and communion with God. No matter what you're facing, you are not alone—He is near, and so are we. Burnout recovery starts with slowing down. In this episode, Julie Holly reveals why stillness isn't weakness — it's strategy. Through Identity-Level Recalibration, learn to rest without fear, trust divine timing, and let peace lead your progress. For many high-capacity humans, rest feels like a threat. After years of achievement, the moment things quiet down, the mind panics — “Am I falling behind?” In this powerful episode of The Recalibration, Julie Holly explores the truth that burnout recovery and lasting clarity come not from speed, but from stillness.Drawing from the incubation effect — the neuroscience principle that insight surfaces when the mind rests — Julie explains why your brain can't access creativity when your nervous system is in survival mode. Through Identity-Level Recalibration (ILR), she shows how to rewire your biology to interpret rest as safety, not failure. You'll also hear from music producer Rick Rubin, whose creative genius is rooted in radical stillness and subtraction. His process illustrates a vital truth: You don't need to add more to become more — you need to become true.Whether you're navigating burnout recovery, decision fatigue, or spiritual exhaustion, this episode offers an identity-rooted invitation to step off the hamster wheel of performance and into peace that produces clarity.Julie weaves together neuroscience, psychology, and faith — reminding you that stillness isn't stagnation; it's sacred strategy. Because when your identity is anchored in who you are, not what you do, you stop striving for momentum and start living from peace.Micro Recalibration:

In this powerful episode, we challenge the modern myth that “good parenting” means self-sacrifice at all costs. Instead, we explore what it really takes to show up strong for your family — starting with how you lead yourself. From the societal pressure to “do it all” to the quiet burnout no one talks about, we unpack how ignoring your own needs doesn't make you a better parent — it makes it harder to be the present, grounded leader your kids actually need. We redefine self-care as self-leadership and break down the mindset shifts, personal responsibility, and daily actions that help you parent from a place of strength — not survival. If you've ever felt guilty for wanting more time, more space, or more growth… this conversation will give you permission to take it — and a plan to model a healthier path for your family. Because your kids don't need a perfect parent. They need one who's fully alive. In this episode, we explore the gift of tears and the importance of allowing ourselves to cry. We reflect on our experiences with crying and talk about how tears, especially in painful moments, can be a powerful expression of surrender, lament, and hope when offered to God. With the help of the Holy Spirit, our sensitivity and capacity to cry reflect the way we were beautifully created to respond to what breaks God's heart. We discuss the vulnerability of crying, the pain of resisting it, and how Jesus crying out on the cross reveals the value of our own cries. Whether you're too tired to cry, afraid to show need, or already feel safe expressing emotion, we invite you to see crying as an act of worship and intercession. In our sorrow, God meets us with love, truth, and the hope that He can actually do something with our pain. What would it look like for me to cry well? Where has my heart been repressed? Where do I need to cry out? Discussion Questions: How did Pope Leo's words change your perspective on crying? How are you tempted to give in to cynicism? In what ways are you self-reliant in this season of life? How can you be an empathetic witness to someone crying out in their life? Quote to Ponder: “Finally, she asks God to give her a gift of tears to draw his mercy down upon the world, and especially upon his church. In one of her visions, Catherine records having been told by God: “If you open your mind's eye you will see that the Holy Spirit weeps in the person of every one of my servants who offers me the fragrance of holy desire and constant humble prayer.” (St. Catherine of Sienna, The Dialogue Study Edition) “We are accustomed to thinking of crying out as something disorderly, to be repressed. The Gospel confers an immense value to our cry, reminding us that it can be an invocation, a protest, a desire, a surrender. It can even be the extreme form of prayer, when there are no words left. In that cry, Jesus gave all that he had left: all his love, all his hope.” (General Audience, September 10, 2025, Pope Leo XIV) Scripture for Lectio: “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” (Psalm 22:1) Sponsor - Beata Home: This episode is sponsored by Beata Home, a boutique-style print shop founded by Katie, a wife and mom of four.
